August NPD: No Madden, Stats Slide
EA's Madden NFL 12 has already sold a million and a half copies. But it didn't come out in August.
Well, it officially launched August 30, but that can't help the monthly NPD numbers. So for the first time, the new Madden installment doesn't top the software sales chart for August and unfortunately, total industry retail sales fell 23%, from $873.8 million to $669.9 million in the US.
Software fell the furthest (down 37%) and again, the lack of Madden has a drastic impact. On the hardware front, sales were up month-over-month but still down 12% in comparison to August 2010. On the good side, Square Enix's stellar Deus Ex: Human Revolution took the top spot even though it was out for only one week during the month. NCAA Football 12 took the second spot and Call of Duty: Black Ops came in at #3. ...yeah, slow month.
Here's Sony's official reply from SCEA Sr. Director of Corporate Communications, Patrick Seybold:
"Despite inventory constraints at retail during the first half of August, PS3 hardware sales were very strong the last two weeks of the month following the $50 price cut and the new inFAMOUS 2 bundle. The new PS3 price point, combined with PlayStation Move and the industry's strongest lineup of exclusive titles, including Uncharted 3 and Everybody Dance, positions us for an amazing holiday season."
I'm no analyst but here's a prediction: expect numbers to rise over the next few months. Shocker, huh?
