August NPD: No Madden, Stats Slide

EA's Madden NFL 12 has already sold a million and a half copies. But it didn't come out in August.

Well, it officially launched August 30, but that can't help the monthly NPD numbers. So for the first time, the new Madden installment doesn't top the software sales chart for August and unfortunately, total industry retail sales fell 23%, from $873.8 million to $669.9 million in the US.

Software fell the furthest (down 37%) and again, the lack of Madden has a drastic impact. On the hardware front, sales were up month-over-month but still down 12% in comparison to August 2010. On the good side, Square Enix's stellar Deus Ex: Human Revolution took the top spot even though it was out for only one week during the month. NCAA Football 12 took the second spot and Call of Duty: Black Ops came in at #3. ...yeah, slow month.

Here's Sony's official reply from SCEA Sr. Director of Corporate Communications, Patrick Seybold:

"Despite inventory constraints at retail during the first half of August, PS3 hardware sales were very strong the last two weeks of the month following the $50 price cut and the new inFAMOUS 2 bundle. The new PS3 price point, combined with PlayStation Move and the industry's strongest lineup of exclusive titles, including Uncharted 3 and Everybody Dance, positions us for an amazing holiday season."

I'm no analyst but here's a prediction: expect numbers to rise over the next few months. Shocker, huh?

I spent $500 on games/hardware during August. I did my part and I'm currently enjoying Nier.

I'm not excited about football this year, my team sucks.

I predict a lot of broke gamers after xmas. Gamers will have to be selective if they want a Vita later.

Ya...I miss Favre being on your team. The 09 season was one of the most enjoyable NFL seasons for me thanks to the Vikings and Colts. Now I'm back to enjoying teams I hate losing. GAWD I hate the Bears.

I hate the Saints, they stole the Superbowl from us.

And the Falcons, they stole it too.

i love football. my team the colts are just lost peyton manning becuase of a 2nd neck surgery. cervical fusion. i am bracing for rough seanson with collins at the healm. oh well, at least i lived to see my team win a superbowl in 2007. the 2006 afc champioship game is one the greatest games i have ever seen. the colts rallied from an 18 pt halftime deficit to defeast the patriots in the last 1 minute and half of the game. manning carved up ne in the second half and vanquished the evil patriots. it erased all the painful memories of painful playoff losses to patriots. we went on to easily defeat rex grossman and the bears in the sb. god, i miss tony dungy. i really dislike our deer in the headlights coach"onside kick"caldwell. that man can acoount for at least 3 losses. one of them being a sb.

I'm really looking forward to this season. My Steelers are getting a little long in the tooth by NFL standards particularly on defense but if all the key players such as Polamalu can stay healthy they have as good a shot as any team to win it all this year.

look at the sales decline. july was the worst month for gaming in 5 yrs. $50 proce cut still didn't put sony on top. looks like we need a new round of consoles to get sales up again.

Well, to be fair, the summer games sucked, except for a few titles. Why is Black Ops at #3? Were people that desperate to buy a game?
