Call Of Duty Sucks Up Lots Of Money And Long Hours

Several studios are working on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. But do you know how many resources are employed to keep the franchise going year after year? Any idea?

You have to check out a recent article at VentureBeat to learn more. Currently, there are over 500 people spanning four or five different studios; it's not so simple as the tag-team approach by Infinity Ward and Treyarch. But don't think Activision is the only big publisher shelling out the bucks and putting in the time; Ubisoft had 400 individuals cranking on Assassin's Creed II.

"It takes a village," they say. Well, that's probably true. Huge games require huge budgets and large amounts of money and manpower. The question is whether or not gamers will say Call of Duty is indicative of all the effort; the fans will quickly say, "hell yeah, it's worth it," while the skeptics may have another answer. Either way, you have to respect so many people working on one particular project.

Demand in production growth at least leads more openings for anyone who wishes to pursue a career in video games. However in a way so much communication and a much larger team could disfigure any universal ideas in the field.

...naah, Assassin's Creed has an awesome concept. Bobby Kotick encourages fascicm in the work area =P.

Wow, with all those people you'd think they could put out something better than a game that's 5 years behind in tech.

5 yrs behind in tech?!? Not really. With all the money they make, lack of progrssion is a valid point. But I'm not going to lie, out of all FPS's today...CoD has some of the best and accurate controls even if they are arcady.

Clearly I didn't state the controls as a technical advancement...you read it that way. Still...their controls are better than any other FPS available. One could even claim their tech is ahead of the rest...good controls and 60fps. Do I believe this...honestly I could care less, but the CoD hate on the website is ridiculous.

The tech argument is kind of weak because KZ3's tech wasn't anything special outside of its graphics. If anything, KZ3 tries to play like CoD.

500 people? Most of them must be sleeping on the job 80% of the time because it sure doesn't translate into the quality of the game...

Well, I like that the market is fertile. Especially seeing I want to work in it.
It is crazy that so many people work so hard for so long on a project and the game is over and done so fast. I turn it on, get my kicks for 5-6 hours. I pop the disc out, place it in the case and drop it off at a Red Box, never to be played again. Oh well, that's already the story of the life of MW3 for me.

I think it would be more satisfying to know somebody spent 100 hours with your work.

everyone new that, they already have 3 studios working on MW3 as it is!
though when your ranking in this amount of money you can afford to go a little overboard.
i wish raven software could defect from antivision and get a new publisher preferably THQ.
there such a good studio they have done some truly amazing games!
there too good for antivision!

It seems to me like the more people that are working on a project, the less interesting it becomes. It becomes more about hitting project goals and expectations, rather than innovating and being creative.

Assassin's Creed II was mentioned, and I honestly found it to be one of the most formulaic and uninteresting productions I've played in recent memory. There was nothing noteworthy about it, other than its meeting certain technical achievements. After AC2 I wanted to have no further involvement with that franchise. (AC1 would have done the same for me, actually, but I already owned both by the time I started playing)
