Infinity Ward Talks About Call Of Duty's Unprecedented Rise

One day, you produce a relatively popular series that falls a little shy of competing with the biggest of the big. And then the next day, you are the biggest of the big. You redefine biggest of the big.

And you know, that isn't the easiest transition to make. Infinity Ward's Mark Rubin has been with the studio since Call of Duty 2, and has watched the franchise become the record-breaking phenomenon it is now. In a recent Guardian interview, Rubin spoke about this huge uprising, and the fact that CoD4 (the title that undoubtedly began the worldwide domination) benefited from gaming becoming more mainstream:

"When Call of Duty 2 came out it was a really successful game, but its success was in the vicinity of other games. But then CoD 4 was released and it was so huge. I think what happened was, it arrived at that point at which gaming became a more culturally acceptable thing. We had celebrities going on chat shows, talking about how much they played; suddenly everyone was talking about games. It started this snowball. It socialised gaming, suddenly it wasn't just the thing that guys do in their mum and dad's basement!"

He went on to say that after Modern Warfare 2 erupted, entertainment records were shattered. And although it may sound a little weird, the more popular CoD became, the more stress the developers felt to live up to expectations. "We're not reaping the benefits from it as much as some people think we are," Rubin said. Yeah, well, we're fairly certain Activision is "reaping the benefits."

Also, he spoke about how Infinity Ward's focus for CoD has always been "fun," and not necessarily blowing everyone away with immensely fine-tuned graphics. Said Rubin:

"Our philosophy in game design is all about fun. We don't make tech demos, we don't look for the latest buzzword graphics elements, like… I don't know… fullscreen ambient occlusion. We're not like, we have to put that on the box – we don't think that way. There are games I play that are graphically beautiful and that's why I play them, but there are games like ours that are just fun. That's what we concentrate on. Everything is geared around making the game more fun."

That's the sort of philosophy we appreciate, and we fully expect a fun game to arrive on November 8. Don't you?

I 100% agree with that philosophy. Absolutely. I will always take a fun game over a sorta-fun game with incredible production values. ALWAYS.

But you know what I don't find fun? Quick scope glitching... my party getting separated all the time... games ending prematurely due to an inability to find a new host... people exploiting flaws by hiding inside walls or rocks...

.... yeah....

Mr. Rubin... I don't need top notch graphics from you. And I want exactly what you say you want to do. But shouldn't a graphically lower scale production be more likely to be air-tight? Can you please, this time around, -fix- the issues that ruin the fun experience? If you do that, I will buy it. I promise. But due to the experiences of MW2 and BOPS, I am waiting to see what the issues are. If a month in those issues are fixed... yeah... I might go back on my word and buy it.

But it had better be fun without the un-fun elements.

Since when is quickscoping a "glitch" its more of a tool and im fine with quickscopers i have a problem with trick shotters.

I have a feeling when I say "quick scope glitching" and when you say "trick shots", we're actually referring to the same thing.

In MW2, sniper rifles suffer from a momentary auto-aim malfunction. We all know MW2 has auto-aim. That's fine. Here's the issue:

When you zoom in with your scope, auto-aim pushes your scope in the general direction of your enemy like it's supposed to. Problem is, there is a moment when what you see on screen is the scope filling your whole screen, JUST before you can look through it. The auto aim is actually right on your target. If you shoot in that window of opportunity, you will ALWAYS hit your target.

In fact, i've seen kill cams where the sniper shot will kill a guy, but you will see it fire while aimed 10-15 feet off target. You'll even see the bullet hit a box or wall or something nowhere near the target. In other words, your bullet will hit anyone on screen despite not being aimed at them.

People sometimes do it while shooting at a building to get people behind walls without knowing where they are.

It's a really dirty exploit. The game has been cheapened now to people sprinting with sniper in hand, and getting into a dog fight with people 5 feet apart quick scoping at each other...

That's what I'm referring to.

No, the quick scope glitch is not present in Black Ops. At least not that I have seen.

Black Ops does have some explosion glitches, though. For example, if placed correctly, you can face a wall, plant a claymore inside the wall, that claymore is invisible to all, and it will blow up a passer by on the other side of the wall, but not on the side it was planted.

Black ops is a little more air-tight, but there are gameplay issues like a delayed hit-detection. Also, the host of a match usually has a noticeable advantage due to a delay in system communication.

In terms of brain dead fun, I would agree. The simplicity and approachable build that makes up COD is great for your average gamer, social gamer and non-gamer.

But I'm a hardcore gamer, and I can easily say that I do not find COD fun. Not in any way. Okay, maybe the single player is smooth and incredibly polished, but the multiplayer is just so darn repetitive, and there is no strategy or teamwork involved anywhere!! You run, you see someone, you shoot, hopefully you kill them first before they kill you. Run around, shoot at sight, rinse, repeat.

I know MW3 will be huge, but quite frankly, I'm over CoD. I think Black Ops will be last CoD... Ever!! Battlefield 3 looks like the smart, hardcore gamer's shooter for people who like to truly earn their kills rather than spray and pray. I sure hope my PC can run Battlefield 3 smoothly.

All online games? What about LBP? or Modnation Racers? If driven, you can go online every day for a year and never play the same map/level twice. ;p

That's just an excuse not to advance and do a cash grab instead, though I don't blame IW I blame Activision.

While I think he's right that it benefited from gaming going more mainstream it also benefited a great deal just by finally being the first game to knock it off with the WWII and let gamers do what they already wanted any way and get involved in wars that were actually taking place on the other side of the world.

I believe that the reason this series skyrocketed was because, A) 360 FPS fanatics went nuts over it, and B) People were sick of WW2 FPS games. CoD4 was and still is amazing to me. Quality-wise, I still think that's the franchise's highest point.

I remember not even paying attention to CoD4 before its release because I though, "Meh, it's just another war/shooting game." I was working in the warehouse at Future Shop on the first day of its release and I took a look at those little tiny screenshots on the back of the packaging and thought it looked awesome. I blind-bought CoD4 that day and loved every second of it.

Then came along World at War and I was back in WW2. No thanks. I bought Modern Warfare 2, but found it very disappointing when comparing it to CoD4. Black Ops was, in my opinion, boring as hell. I'm going to pick up MW3, but just to complete off the trilogy. I'm HOPING it's as good as CoD4, but honestly, my money is on Battlefield 3 for being the best FPS this fall.

I agree it's all about having fun in games. In all honesty, I think the COD fanboys r getting ripped off if they pay retail price + DLC content. Fanboys r sure getting brainwashed.

a freaking men!
thats the exact problem with games these days, there not games there tech demos!
thats exactly why i have not enjoyed GOW3, KZ, infamous 2 and such.
there not games, there freaking tech demos!
look at infamous it was such a simplistic game but i loved it to hell because it was so much fun!
infamous 2 though was all about scale and graphics AKA a tech demo and that totally destroyed it for me.
