PSXE Poll Update: Final Fantasy Isn't Lagging, It's Dead
Woah. Despite all the criticism floating around the Internet concerning Final Fantasy, we didn't realize favor had fallen so far so damn fast...
When we wanted to gauge reader interest for Final Fantasy XIII-2, we learned that some are really looking forward to the highly anticipated sequel. But the majority simply said they aren't interested at all; in fact, the franchise is dead. It's just no longer the series the veteran fans have known and loved, so no matter what Square Enix delivers with FFXIII-2, a lot of people are going to be skeptical or just plain annoyed. That's unfortunate. But at the same time, we can't say this hate is entirely undeserved, as the franchise in question has switched gears this generation, and hardcore role-playing fans have been disappointed.
Maybe the high-definition overhaul of Final Fantasy X will help to restore some faith in Square-Enix. But as for new entries go... Oh well, let's move on to some real RPGs: Dark Souls and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Oh, and let's toss in the recently released White Knight Chronicles 2, just because it absolutely qualifies as a solid, engrossing role-playing experience. Which of these three do you expect to take up most of your time? Even if you plan on playing them all, which title gets the nod for the top priority slot?

Graphics look soo crisp, clean, and the cinemas are so real I cant believe it. Then it cuts into gameplay where they are talking....looks almost as good as the cinema! It shows the command bar at the bottom left (kinda like KH) an its in english...I have a feeling this is going to come out sooner then most think. This game will bring you back to FF, make you believe again...even if its kinda KH style and its not your fav. kinda (hack an slash) gameplay.
I love old school FF's and turn base is where i started off...but give the new FF's a shot. Its like with having cell phones or even smart phones now adays! If you dont adapt to what they are serving you get left behind and some dont care for the upgrade in any technology or games which is fine, but i see so much crap on how everyone misses the turn base. Put in FF III - IX then if you dont get what u want. Enough complaining

As for a 2nd, skyrim while be eating my time up too.
And not to mention I have a huge backlog of other rpgs; demons souls, two worlds 2, .hack's, kh1, and a few others.
And then other games like dead island, w@w, and some ps1 classics.
Ahh, god I need a time machine to stop the flow of time so I can get some GD gaming done.

I am looking forward to Versus XIII, Type-0, and the possibility of a console Kingdom Hearts. Hell, I'd even be interested in the PS3 release of FF XIV. I just have no interest in playing the sequel to a game I felt was a chore to get through, and that had a battle system I hated. Count that with the turn-over rate between this and the original and the possibility of them doing anything significant to my major issues with outright gameplay is virtually non-existent. I'm sure I'll buy another FF game someday... I'm just not getting fooled again by brand recognition.

I cant understand is it nessasary for a game like skyrim that will have over 100-200 hours of gameplay to have DLC? Since it was announced a year ago then have it exclusive (timed) on the 360 like an elaborate sceam to get extra millions from microsoft and while nickel and diming gamers? I mean i cant blame them but comon lol.

Out of those mentioned I thinl Skyrim tops it. I enjoyed Fallout 3 as I could pretty much set the game pace and didn't feel I was forced to get flustered and irate. I'm hoping for the same with Skyrim.
I'm staying clear of dark souls because I do not want to get stressed playing games.
WKC I might pick up when it's cheaper.

PSX Extreme is Final Fantasy haters site.
Just come out of the closet and state it clearly on your site once and for all.
I'm not putting anyone down for their likes or dislikes, but it's the incessant and roundabout way you guys are doing it that's really annoying. And they way you people just never let up about how the series is crap and all. Seriously.... yes for the billionth time, FF sucks now. We know already. Can we move on? And for the record, FF (like everything alive)will evolve and change, maybe not to your liking, but many others will love it. Life goes on, things change. DEAL with it.

@Ayane
You act as if there is no middle ground between hater and lover. I mean, it's not like you even bothered to see what the feeling across the industry is just to see how that compares to what the FF fans of this site are feeling.
I mean, seriously... it wouldn't take you any longer than 1 minute to look up a couple metacritic scores... and see... that across the board, FFXIII scores, on average, a FULL POINT out of 10 possible LOWER than a long list of top notch FF's.
So it's not like the decline in quality is imagined by so called, "haters". Critics overwhelmingly consider it 10 points lower than it is capable of, as well!
To top it off, 8.3 averages are typically decent games. And everyone on this site, including the editor, -CONTINUALLY- states that in and of itself, it's a good game, but not a great FF. And that's completely fair. It's no system seller, though, like nearly -ALL- past FF's were. FF7 could sell PS1's, and FF10 could sell PS2's. Even if FFXIII was an exclusive, it isn't good enough to move systems.
There's a multitude of reasons for FFXIII scoring lower in critic scores and fan's hearts. It certainly isn't production values... sound and visuals are top notch, for sure. It must be something about the game itself... hmm... I wonder if it's because the gameplay is not anything to write home about...
No... if you ask me, the haters will always exist no matter the quality. But the people who have fallen in love with the franchise -NEED- to voice their displeasure when quality dips in their beloved product line. That's consumerism 101. It's Business 101. Your faithful consumers need to be acknowledged to ensure consistent quality.
No... if we bend over and take it straight down the kill tubes, we're doing the franchise a disservice in return for it's loyalty over the years. Like any good relationship, we need to communicate our likes and dislikes.
So... Ben with all the varity of articles, editorials, and news items... the fans here constantly voicing what we think....
Haters?
Not a chance in hell, buddy.
We're the ones that care the most. And if you ask me, we're showing it.

You can call us haters all you want. Most of us know the truth and know what Final Fantasy SHOULD BE not what it has turned into. Go have fun with your mediocre excuse for an JRPG and I hope you waste your money on that garbage cash grab that is XIII-2.

I would agree with you Ayane, if you said it probably is about time they "get over it" and just realize that ff as they knew it is gone, and just let it be. But haters? Hardly.

"It's no system seller"
I disagree with you on that. Why would sony bother to make a version 2.0? This hasn't even been done before I think for limited edition consoles(correct me if I'm wrong), but if so not many times at all. One thing I admit though, is that some people do just get them because it is simply a smexy ps3 that usually comes up to date at the time and don't care about the ff brand.
But why would sony even bother making a bunch of high quality limited edition ps3 with a beautiful design if it isn't going to sell? This tells me it is obviously a system seller.
FF 13-2 is a great game, but not just a great ff game for older fans of the series. It sold very well, had good scores, and I believe we all are just seeing new fans bursting in along with this modern/current gen final fantasy.
But for the most part good rant. I see Ayane managed to press a lot of people's button.

They do limited edition PS3's in Japan -ALL THE TIME-. And no matter what the theme is, it always sells out.
It just happened to be a news item on this site for that particular system, and the article was more about why limited edition PS3's are never for sale in EU and NA.
A system seller, by definition, is a game that people want so bad, they will buy the system just to play that game.
Halo is a system seller, for example. People buy XBOX's for the sole reason of wanting to play HALO. At least, they definitely did in the original XBOX generation.

When did something have to be a exclusive to be a system seller? That would be a "exclusive" system seller. If people see a game they like they are going to upgrade to a newer gen system regardless if it is multiplat or exclusive. Hence the broader term system seller and not exclusive system seller.
Like I said, why would sony put effort into it if it isn't going to sell them systems?! Which would mean it is a system seller, but not a exclusive system seller seeing it is being made on xbox. Not every single AAA IP on the ps3 gets this type of treatment especially with a version 2.0! Not even all their exclusives!!!

You just now is the first time I have ever heard the term "exclusive system seller". FFXIII is not a system seller. It just isn't. It's not even a 9.0 meta'd game. FFXIII came out 4 years into the generation. Far too late to be a sole reason for people to upgrade to this generation. 1 among many, at a stretch perhaps, but not a sole reason.
And since it isn't an exclusive, it will never convince someone to opt for any specific system. It just plain is not a system seller... there's really no way around it.
And in Japan, yes. Nearly every limited number special PS3 sells out in the first week. The only exceptions belong to the 1 or 2 systems that are only different by color. Not theme.

edit: Saying that it isn't a 9.0 title doesn't help your argument. sony decided to mass produce a version 2 limited edition console for this thing. Now does EVERY 9.0 title/exclusive system seller get that type of treatment from sony? Heck no! Sony basically said FF is still god at the time being so they get their bad ass LE 2.0. Despite the fact they aren't a 9.0 title, despite the disappointment from a certain group of fans, despite they aren't even a exclusive for us!!!
I just feel a certain group of fans are upset and just want to take shots at it as much as they want because they hate what it has become. But that is one credit you have to give to this IP along with that it was the fastest selling FF game in history. Of course it has several bad things about it, but at least those 2 things you can't take away from it at all.

Dark Souls is an instant buy as I loved Demon's Souls.
And Skyrim will be a rental as soon as I can, but likely not a buy until a complete version comes out.
That being said, I don't think any will take up my time unfortunately, as there is also the Team ICO bundle, and UC3 releasing, among others and my backlog that is simply not being whittled down... Not good, I tells ya. But at the same time, oh so very good.

not which RPG releasing this year do you see soaking up most of your time.

But... yeah... you gotta draw the line somwhere and not list 50 RPG's to choose from in a poll. If you had to pick 3, it makes perfect sense to pick the 3 most current/coming soon.

Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will definitely be taking up so many hours of my life, that I'm not sure that I'll have time to enjoy UC3 to its full extent before I'll be putting Skyrim into my PS3. Well, either way, November's going to be a good month, no matter what.

What, because it's linear? Well, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy, Eternal Sonata, Folklore, etc. are all linear as hell yet they're "real RPGs".
Because it doesn't have the exact same battle system slightly tweaked from the first 10 games? Well, neither does Final Fantasy XII but that's considered a "real RPG".
I mean, it has all the staples of Final Fantasy. Androgynous teenagers off to save the world, chocobos, moogles, protagonist with big sword, great graphics, etc. I just don't get it. But whatever.
Yeah, aside from Final Fantasy Versus XIII (and Final Fantasy Type-O to a less extent), Final Fantasy is pretty much dead to me too. Final Fantasy XIV, Dissidia, Final Fantasy XIII-2, etc.) Square can keep them. Not interested. Just give me Kingdom Hearts III instead.

I agree that Final Fantasy XIII lacks some RPG elements but to say it's not a "true" RPG just seems ridiculous in my opinion since no one can seriously define what a "true RPG" is.

P.S. Anyone played Oblivion on PC then switched to consoles? I'm wondering if the shift will be as jarring as it was for Portal 2.(No, I'm not a huge fan of first-person games on consoles, though Borderlands worked pretty well)
