Video Unlimited Preview Arrives For PlayStation Store
Hey look, another incentive to be a PlayStation Plus subscriber. But then again, maybe you're just willing to wait.
Today, Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) and Sony Network Entertainment (SNEI) have announced that the new Video Unlimited preview application is now available on the PlayStation Store in the US and Canada.
Plus users will be able to download the feature and "experience a new, intuitive way to navigate and discover video content on PS3." Not only does the application have the same content found in the existing Store video delivery service, the app also boasts "endless related search results via a whole new way to discover content for purchase or rent." While Plus members have access now, all PSN users will be able to sample the Video Unlimited preview app on October 11. It's free to download for everyone, so why not give it a try?
Now, about that cross-game chat feature we've been talking about for oh, let's see, years...?

The PS3 doesn;t have cross game chat because it was not implemented in the beginning. Had Cross game chat been one of the priorities earlier in the life of the PS3 it could have been added. However, it was not. Over time Sony has reduced the memory footprint of the OS and given more features at the same time. However Cross game chat is a significant function and would require sufficient memory to implement that either the amount of memory the resident OS uses would increase, or other functionality would have to be dropped. Since you can't take back the memory you've given to devs to use and you can't yank functionality that's already in the OS and used in games, you can't add cross game chat.
That's got nothing to do with the PS3 being powerful enough, and everything to do with Cross game chat not being a huge priority (rightly so) for Sony. This insistence on Cross game chat is largely a North American market phenomenon, and in reality a really small feature in any case.

Or they could just get all their francises to implement a global chat, but then it would only work on new games.
Either way its a feature I never used once on the 360 and would probably never use if it came to the ps3

Still all that said, I'm not sure why people are so set on this feature. If the game you are playing let's you chat with your friends in game, I don't see why anything else is required. As many people have commented before, it's incredibly distracting to have someone yammering in your ear about the game they are playing if you are playing something else.

Take the game Hustle Kings. You can be playing a game and have a small window open up and Video Chat with a friend as you play pool. I wonder if the program used to enable this feature can be tweaked to connect to other games. Essentially giving many users what they have been screaming for all these years. Add that program script to other games and allow them to connect and viola! I know, it sounds good in theory but oh.. If it were only that simple.
I do not need this feature myself but I do understand that this is a big part of why Xboxers have a hard time transitioning to PS3. It is essentially a phone and social connection. It gives the Xbox a pulse. Some call the PS3 the silent system. It would not hurt to include it but I expect this to happen on PS4. It had already begun with VITA.
