Yamauchi: GT5 "Spec 2.0" Update Coming Soon

Gran Turismo 5 is all about fine-tuning. Polyphony Digital understands that better than anyone.

Series creator Kazunori Yamauchi has revealed on his Twitter page that the "Spec 2.0" update is coming our way soon. It should be here in less than a month (by the third week of October) and although we aren't aware of the details, we know more downloadable content will drop the week after the update. Yamauchi simply gave us this:

"GT fans, thanks for waiting… The GT5 Spec 2.0 update is coming the 3rd week of October, with DLC following a week later."

Okay, so what do you want to see arrive with this update? Do you have any lingering issues with the game? Thus far, GT5 has shipped 6.37 million units, which is pretty damn impressive considering it's only available on one platform. There are a lot of interested drivers out there, and Yamauchi has said in the past that his team will continue to support the critically acclaimed title. And that's exactly what they're gonna do.

Now, how's about GT6 for the PS4?

Let's see, from what I remember from the top of my head, in GT5 Spec II from I, we had a bunch more cars, a track, new modes, more tuning option, and slight physics changes (or was it engine sound?).

Then again, we can't get too excited because from Spec II to III, the change wasn't as dramatic. So let's just hope for the best and not jump to conclusions just yet to be on the safe side. What I want to know is which features/content we'll get for the update (free), and which for the DLC, which I assume will be paid.

please please, more American and German musle...plz. More Benzs, more Fords, some Pontiacs, more BMW's or premium versions at least...and updated rooster of great cars, more recent cars, etc. I love GT5 so new cars and tracks would be great. Also a Premium Bugatti...come on, some Zonda's....come on...lol

I agree, I think there should be more variety of premium vehicles such as: Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Bentley, Mybach, Rolls Royce, Vector, Porsche. I don't really need the 7 variations of the same mediocre cars. Just my opinion!

Yes yes, more Ameirican muscle. I mean they have alot of muscle cars, but most are standard and don't include enough Pontiacs, Fords, etc. Forza 4 has this game killed right now in car selection.

To be fair, PD is a Japanese development team, with no outside sources (that and a not so big 150 man team). That's probably why so many of the cars are Japanese. They do try to get as much American appeal like muscle cars as possible, but I don't think they can be a scale to that of Forza's. For every new American model, Turn 10 can easily go to the real thing and model it. For PD to get all the Pontiacs and muscle car, they're gonna have to get a decent length vacation to the U.S!

I don't because i have way too many other games to play at the moment. But its a time killer, i don't even notice the time when i played. This coming from someone new to racing sims and gran turismo(used the driving force GT).

Do I play GT5? Daily, and I am having more fun now than ever now that I have 1000 plus cars to experiment with.

GT5 Spec II and subsequent DLC most likely will represent another 12 months of game time for me.

GT5 is the Best racing game out there. I just havn't been playing it because i don't have a wheel. But once i do im laying some rubber.
What happened with me is my PS3 rebooted and it erased all the data I had on it, so my GT5 profile is empty as i havn't really got back into it yet. But the steering wheel will just add that much to it, whole new experience and I can't wait to get back into it.

I hope Spec 2.0 is going to be Awesome! and I wounder what the DLC will be. I hate the fact of DLC but this is PD and GT we are talking about, they DESERVE the money!

And about GT6. :D I already can't wait, GT5 will last until then, but I wounder if we will see GT6 prologue maybe after then next couple of years. maybe? And as of now, I won't be buying a PS4 until GT6 comes out.

since all i seem to be doing right now is driving people to and from work, i'm starting to hate driving. i'm at a point where i dont even want to drive even in a videogame. i remember was that i was trying to get the minolta and my bspec driver kept getting "left way behind" at higher level races while using a fully tune veyron.

If anyone is on my PSN friends list, they'll know I absolutely rape this game. I got literally all 1032 cars, platinum trophy, and I'm still playing it. This game imo, has an under-rated online play. I guess you also have to be car enthusiasts to be booting up the game just to do nothing but tune a car. This alone can take me hours. If anyone wants to race, I'm game.

interesting fellas, it's a different age we live in now and I find myself moving from one AAA title to another without dwelling on much except the rare RPG that has endless playtime like Fallout and Elder Scrolls.

What will be interesting to see is what SpecII fixes. I wonder if the shadowing problem was improved on again. Jawknee can update here as he enjoys GT5 a lot...

I would still like this game in my collection, but I am waiting...

Excellent!

Well, other than Uncharted 3, this is going to make gaming the rest of this year an easy decision. White Knight Chronicles 2 questing, Atelier Totori, GT5 Spec 2 and Uncharted 3, I need nothing else.

i need to beat white knight chronicles 2 so i can go questing with you guys, or beat dynasty warriors gundam 3, or beat mass effect 2, or try the fight lights out, or get into battlefield 3 beta. man, i put a lot of games on hold for white knight chronicles 2..... and i dont regret any of it.

If there was one thing I respect about Kaz and PD is that they don't think about DLC while in development and try to cram in as much as possible before the release date, and should I say after lol. Just look at all the reports when he was asked about DLC, and all he said was "We're currently not looking into it." Plus, I know a lot of games that would've made us pay for some of the additional content we got from the update patches in GT5.

So yes, they deserve our money! Now let's hope it's something interesting. One thing we should know is that part of the development team is working on modeling new cars and tracks. What we don't know (yet) is which of them we'll see in GT5.

That's a great point, really. GT5, imperfections and all, still offers a TON of content for 60 bucks. PD really does deserve support from its fans.

Right now, we don't know anything about Spec 2. The whole standard to premium thing was considered to be part of one of GT5's bigger update in the future. Perhaps this is it, but to be honest, I didn't expect them to be jumping to Spec II unless the game is gonna undergo a major change, and not just additional content.

Don't take this the wrong way, but I hope this Spec 2 update and DLC content is one of the finishing touches for GT5. I want them to get started on GT6 soon. Seriously, PD have been working on GT5 updates like the game is still in development. No joke. They've given us a lot, and I think it's about that time to save some stuff for GT6.

Ok, to be honest, I just want GT6 for the PS3, so I don't have to buy a PS4 if it releases next gen!

I see your point, but I believe that Spec II is a sign that GT5 still enjoys a nicely sized community. At nearly one year old, one of the Special Events had over 80,000 people try it.

It's also a sign that GT5 isn't exactly what Kaz wants it to be at the day of release back in Winter 2010. You gotta love the man for not just letting it off his shoulders, and instead continue to polish this game out!

But yeah, I really think PD deserves another round of hot sales from GT6, not just extra money from DLCs. I don't want them to spend so much on GT5, that a lot of the ideas for GT6 will be spent. The more ideas (and content) that are saved, the more interesting GT6 will be.

my lord, i thought we were never going to see some DLC!
the games almost been out for a year for crying out loud!
no wonder it took them so long to make a whole game when it takes them this long just to do some bloody DLC!
kinda embarrassing when turn 10 has produced 4 games and a years worth of DLC for each game, in the time that its taken PD to do 1 game and 1 DLC patch!

You act as if PD has left GT5 alone. 13 patches in 10 months. That's awesome support, especially since half of it was against cheaters and exploiters. The US GT Academy was marred by these not-so-scrupulous individuals.

While there is no denying that T10 has produced more games, none of them have been even close to the masterpiece that GT4 was and where GT5 is heading.

This is brilliant news! After a string of steady updates over the months, the game is damn near perfect in my opinion, just a few things here and there that need fixing.

My wishlist for spec 2.0 update is:

- Ability to save mid-game during endurance races
- Fix blocky shadows
- Quicker loading times
- More premium cars
- Allow racing modifications on more cars…lots more!

thank you for bringing up the blocky shadows becuase i hate them. i would be happy if they just added a feature that let you shut off the shadows in the game.

my wish list would be.

ability to disable shadows
more variety in the premium cars
more premium cars
clean up the alpha texture blending

i also will note that 6.37 million in sales will make this the lowest selling gt title by far. gt3 aspec came out early in the ps2's life cycle and sold over 13 million copies. gt4 sold over 10 million copies. it seems like sales in na and japan have dropped off considerbly. i know what is going on in na becuase its 360 territory. i would guess the japan drop off could be becuase of their love of handheld devices such as the psp. anyways, i am sure sony and pd have noticed this decline as well.

pd should start on gt6. i would suggest that bring in some more man power so it does not take 5 freaking years to make a game. kick yamauchi upstairs as executive consultant and bring in somebody else that is more productive to direct the next game.

While I can't dispute the GT5 sales to other titles, you should consider two things that the other Gran Turismo games did not have to face.

1 - The competition.
2 - The Global Recession.
3 - The decline of Simulators.

The Recession going on right now may play a lessor part in the sales, but the competition that GT5 faces is serious. Take a look at any simulator out right now whether it be flying or driving, the truth is they are just not as popular as they once were.

All that aside, GT5 is still the biggest selling simulator this generation with GT5P and GT5 accounting around 11 million units. Forza, will be lucky to hit that mark with three games.

getting rid of yamauchi to me would kill the GT series forever, i feel that without him they would not move foward and push the limits, nor would the game have looked half as nice. and i feel as though without him Gran Turismo would be turned into an Activision game that comes out once a year to make sales with 2 changes and 5 new cars. which is total trash.

I want to see more premium models(of course), new tracks(spa, watkins glen, road america, silverstone, donington park, brands hatch circuit, bedford autodrome, augusta international raceway, autobahn country club, barber motorsports park, etc,), and the return of some missing old tracks(midfield raceway, the test course, complex string, red rock valley, infineon raceway, twin ring motegi, seattle circuit, opera paris, etc).

For the Spec 2.0, I want to see:

-Porsches (road an racing cars)
-Bigger selection in choosing wheels an every kind of car, premium an standard.
-More tracks
-Day-to-Night effect on ALL courses

I would personally like to see a few more vehicles that belong in the game, Pontiacs, Acuras would deff. be appreciated as i own a TL and think it would be perfect for the game, a broader range of vehicles instead of many of the same model different years. i would also like to see a few different models of Nissans such as Altimas or Maximas. the game is fantastic don't get me wrong lol just a couple new cars would be cool =)
