BF3 Producer Bach Critical Of His Previous Efforts

You know what we need more of? In every field and aspect of life? Perfectionists.

We know of several in the gaming industry. Names like Hideo Kojima, David Cage, and Kazunori Yamauchi come to mind. But maybe we should add another: Battlefield 3 producer Patrick Bach.

In a very interesting interview with The Wall Street Journal, Bach says he is overly critical of his previous titles and in fact, he's "ashamed" of them. That includes the stellar Battlefield: Bad Company 2, which met with substantial critical acclaim and earned big sales numbers. Said Bach:

"I don't know why, but I always feel ashamed about the games I'm involved in making. I can't even bring myself to start up Battlefield Bad Company 2, our last game, because I feel so ashamed. I know it is a great product, but still I only see the things we could have done better."

Of course, many are excited for Battlefield 3 and most believe it will be one of the most impressive productions of the entire generation. But that doesn't mean Bach is comfortable. He's still worried he'll feel the same about BF3 as he did about Bad Company 2:

"I'm still extremely nervous, not about what other people will think, but about how I will feel about the game. My biggest worry is that I will feel bad about the product. For me, my job is very personal."

Well, he's either a perfectionist or a big-time pessimist. Either way, people like this typically strive to reach the stars, if only to avoid that intensely critical view of themselves and their work. Considering this, we have to assume someone like Bach would hate to put his name on a sub-par game. So yeah, we're plenty excited.

Interesting. I think he's a perfectionist, but at the same time I don't think he should say he's ashamed of the game. A lot of people busted their ass to make that game with him and that makes them feel bad I'm sure when he says that. If he says he's disappointed in his own efforts, that's one thing. But when you say you're ashamed of the game, you bring in everyone who worked on it into that conversation.

Not a good idea if you want good team morale. It's always good to want to outdo yourself and stay hungry. At the same time, even though I'm sure he didn't say this to make his team look bad, to me he did with that comment.

I'm sure that's not really his intention, but I could also see your point. I guess the best thing he could do is to take note of all the things he could improve on and implement them on the sequel.

Good call, I agree.

Yeah, and probably not his intention at all.

many gamers think bf3 is one of the most impressive productions out there? sure they thought the pc footage looked great but when they went and downloaded the beta on their consoles they were not impressed. maybe this bf3 producer should be more critical of his current game. if he is such a perfectionist then what the hell is up with current state of bf3 beta? this beta makes kz3 look like a next gen game. it even makes resistance 3 look amazing. this is just another feed from ea to drum up some more hype. i don't know what else to say except the emperor has no clothes, and ea/dice better be cracking away at bf3. they might want to put out the numerous fires accross the internet about bf3 while they are at it. they have a lot of work to do.

frostbite 2.0 has fallen flat on its face. the more time i spend with the bf3 beta the less i like it. screen tearing, jaggies, blurry textures, glitches, bugs...i can not believe ea released a beta in this condition. it will defintely hurt sales. if you do play the beta just take a minute to look around to see what this "amazing" frostbite 2.0 engine is doing. you will see a very average looking game that looks about as good as the medal of honor multi player. there are definitely many games out there that look a lot better. frostbite 2.0 blah, blah, blah. i almost feel sorry for ea. this game is no cod killer in its current state.

i do not think most informed console gamers think bf3 is one of the most impressive looking productions out there anymore. they are now aware of ea's tactic of showing pc footage and now know the game is not going to look as good as they were led to believe.

@killa

you bring up a good point. this is just a beta. what i think is happening here is ea/dice is a victim of their own hype. developers need to be careful with betas. they are almost considered demos in this day and age. throwing a lack luster open beta out there will do more harm than good. i would have thought ea would have learned a lesson from the crysis 2 mp demo on psn. the reaction to it was so bad ea yanked it off psn after a few days. the final crysis 2 game looked considerbly better than that mp demo but i am sure that mp demo cost ea some sales on the ps3 version. maybe the retail release of bf3 will be better, but like i said i think they have a lot of work to do.

showing all that pc footage did not help either. believe it or not there are gamers out there who actually thought the console versions would look almost as good as all that awesome pc footage.

apparently graphics are very important these days. it seems that's what a lot of fps gamers complain about when a beta shows up. if graphics are all they care about then why is the kz series not that popular? oh well, there must be other things factoring in to that. maybe bf3 will be a game that has other qualities that make up for what many seem to think are weak production values. i guess we will find out soon enough. i will note that activision called out ea for showing the pc version. i'm sure the cod developers are shaking in their boots after the bf3 open beta :/. watch out cod. frostbite 2.0 is going to get you. thinking about that almost makes me have to luagh out loud after playing this beta. maybe both cod mw3 and bf3 will fall flat on their face and the oversaturation of fps games will end.

oops i replied in the wrong spot. sorry guys. i like bigreds analogy about betas being like a pre season football game. that's probably a good way of looking at it. i will note that the kz3 beta looked spectacular from day 1. i have particapted in about 5 betas and most the time they were pretty close to the retail release.

I think everyone will stop complaining about tge bf3 beta when the full retail copy arrives and youre avle to kill the enemy not just with guns, also with tanks, humvies, planes etc. The beta is jist 1map1mode. The retail will be better.

Yea I've said it before ill say it again. Betas are like the preseason in football. Their indication of the final product aka regular season is very vague. It's gonna b a thing where we'll have to just hold our criticisms till it hits shelves.

Plus if this guy is this critical of his products there's no way in Hell he would look passed these problems. Plus betas are made for consumer feedback. They will likely fix the issues if this guy has anything to say about it. Nevertheless ill probably wait on bens review just to b sure.

Lets look at some trends here: R3 released an unimpressive beta/ demo, was burned for it but the full game still pulled through with a sound game overall. If I recall correctly crysis 2 also had an unimpressive beta people were irate in fact because crytek definatly hyped there game and people may have expected pc quality on their consoles. Crysis, low and behold was solid, one of the premiere shooters from a graphical standpoint on console (but still kz kinda holds that title)

So I wonder, with these console shooters, are we holding a beta to a much higher standard. Are developers using betas less as a mode of constructive criticism and more of just a morsel of what their game is all about. Remember resistance claimed that demo was running on pre alpha coding or something like that. And I firmly believe that because resistance turned out great.

Another question I have is is this a dev tactic to kind of hide some of their tricks from the competition? If dice released a beta that showed the game running at 100% that gives competition like cod a whole month to up the ante. From a consumer perspective, i disagree with this, but from a business perspective (excuse the pun) I wouldn't want to show off all my weapons before the game even releases.

So this could be like I said preseason football or a sign of sour things to come, but knowing dice and how the battlefield fans have been anticipating this for so long, I just can't imagine them releasing a game that could wind up below an 80, Hell an 85 with all the hype around it.

I thought Bad Company 2 was just fine aside from the screen tearing and gritty graphics. The gameplay is fantastic. I feel the same way about Battlefield 3. I consider myself a bit of a graphics whore and while(so far) I'm underwhelmed by the PS3/Xbox presentations, I still see the potential for a fun game.

No offense chum but you are the foremost expert on Screen-Tearing which I am not saying isn't happening in the Beta but I really haven't noticed any(concentrating more on not falling into holes and enemy fire).

I actually was expecting the graphics to be much more crisp and clean but if you think about it, the PS3 has 5 year old tech in it, I'm impressed how most of the Multiplats can pull of what they can now.

After spending a good amount of time with both console versions of BF3 i can safety say that this game is WAAAAY overhyped. I Know its just a beta but how differently can a beta be if the final retail is already gold and is just 3 weeks away? This is more like a demo.

Visually other then the lighting effects there is nothing else impressive with the new frostbite 2.0 that hasent already been done with bf2 and the original frostbite engine on consoles. The map currently on the beta has very limited destructive environments and doesn't justify all this heavenly hypetrain mw3 killer bs. The sound design has always been top notch in battlefield games but the gameplay and visuals is exactly the same as bc2 nothing new to the table except fighter jets. Both console versions look the same with no known visual differences other than the fact i prefer the 360 controller layout for bc3. Im getting this game and mw3 also but the level of hype this game is getting over mw3 and not much to back the hype up is pathetic. I though cod fanboys were bad.
Want a mind blowing experience (on a console) wait for uncharted 3.

Im sure the pc version is where the real bc3 experience is and can justify the new almighty frostbite 2.0 but unfortunately i dont have a high end game pc and neither does most of the world and the console versions are more important to dice/ea in terms of sales/sucess and is the versions most people will play.

Okay so after playing for a while I can tell you its good. Great in fact. Graphically the issues aren't as much of a hinderance as I thought they might, but they are present. I think the map is just a pain in the a$$. The first portion makes it really tough to spot enemies what with all that foliage. I get killed quite often. Then once u enter the subways it becomes one major chokepoint. I remember most stages in bc2 being more open, but this one was pretty far from it.

Time to shake off the cobwebs boys... It's huntin' season.

f*ck no we got more then enough perfectionists!
unless you want every other game to be like these others, IE take forever in development, cost a bomb and never see anything till release.
thank god we dont have more perfectionists, otherwise we would be sitting at home bored sh*tless waiting for something!

Patience is a virtue blankey. Some damn fine games have taken years and years and years to make, and yet they are brilliant upon release. Red Dead Redemption is one of the many examples of this. In that way I think perfectionism is justified.

Of course, you've got games like DNF which completely suck upon release, but that's mostly because of how the production schedule for the game goes, not because it takes a long time.

Wow - very poor choice of words.

EA made a HUGE blunder promoting BF3 by showing 1080P high end PC graphics and then at the last minute showing what the game will look like on consoles. Also I think this Beta is doing them more harm than good.

Yeah, I don't know how to feel about this. Playing right now and I like the way the guns handle, but the look of it is just bleh. There are a few bugs here and there, but I was expecting the best in the visuals department.

Also don't really like the kit set up. I'm hoping they polish things up, but not that I'm even one to be like visuals make or break a game for me, but this looks like the demo I played for Homefront. It just looks like garbage. It plays ok, but the look is something that just feels really flat and drab and does nothing for me.

It's a beta!!! It's not the final product!!! People are so harsh for these tests. The whole purpose of a beta is to find the glitches. To find the spots where it's not quite up to par. Another thing... It's an entirely new engine they are working with. Cut them some slack. People saying "How could they put out a beta with so many glitches" just sounds so retarded imo. So what if BFBC2 beta was better. It was also made on an engine that they were already comfortable with. People like that (you know who you are) are poison to the gaming community. I'm going to laugh when the final product releases and you all eat your words. nuff said...

Even still DJ Eezzy, betas these days are pretty much demos. There are a few tweaks here and there, but really how much can they change and fix up in a month?

The look is very underwhelming and they're not going to be able to fix it up as much as they'd like with under a month before release.

Bugs and stuff, yeah they can fix, but the low quality of the graphical power which was so hyped up is very underwhelming in person.

To clear that up. The graphical presentation they've been showing this whole time has been pc. Honestly who cares if the graphics aren't pc quality. If the gameplay is there then why does it matter? If you're only playing a game because of graphics then you're playing for the wrong reason. I have a 3d tv and i don't complain when a game isn't released in 3d. Graphics are just an added bonus to me. What matters most is gameplay. Oh and one more thing. The footage they show is always single player. The graphical presentation for almost any multiplayer mode usually does take a hit. All i have to say is if BF3 looks as good as BFBC2 then i'll be plenty happy.

Hmmm.... DICE are good devs, but are in no way perfectionists. On BC2 the bug that gave the wrong "game won/game lost" screen was never patched, the squads were a mess at launch, custom rooms were buggy throughout, they took at least six months to patch the PBY boats falling through the bottom of the map and glitch-killing in the Vietnam maps (and may never have patched it, but I'd stopped playing by then). BC2 was fun, but it was a very rough-at-the-edges game, and lacked polish and attention to detail, two things I'd expect of perfectionists. I expect the same of BF3 - awesome fun, but unpolished and with bugs around the edges.

Guys let's not forget what the difference is between a demo and a beta. They are actually quite different. Betas are trials of a sometimes older build of a game that is used for consumer feedback in fixing glitches. Demos however are usually the final representation of a game in a bite size package. We can't write these guys off based off a beta that doesn't make sense
