Mortal Kombat Movie To Offer "More Realistic Characters"
Well, it was probably inevitable.
Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment is teaming up with Warner's New Line Cinema to deliver another Mortal Kombat movie, which is slated to hit theaters some time in 2013. You up for it?
Warner Bros. acquired MK maker Midway Games in 2009; the sinking developer was going bankrupt and WB picked 'em up for $49 million. This past April, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment released the Mortal Kombat reboot, which was a hit with both reviewers and gamers, ultimately selling over 3 million copies. The promotional Internet series "Mortal Kombat: Legacy" certainly helped; it was directed by Kevin Tancharoen, who earned attention by producing a short film based on MK in 2010. The film convinced Warner to give him a shot at another project.
New Line Cinema president Toby Emmerich said their decision to hire Tancharoen was due entirely to his online work.
"The new game and the online shorts prompted us to consider a reboot of a brand we hadn’t been actively thinking about."
The new movie will be made for under $100 million and "will offer a more realistic take on the Mortal Kombat characters." It should also coincide with the release of the next MK game; the new title and film may be available in a dual Blu-Ray/DVD package. ...we'll be interested to see how the director finds the "realism" in this franchise.

Criticize all you want, but I really liked the first MK movie... I might venture to say I loved it! The fact that I was 12, and a HUGE MK fan at the time may play into that. I still remember the first time I saw the trailer on TV. Scorpion cartwheels out from behind a tree in a forest and launches his spear thingy at the screen... I damn near hit the ceiling with excitement.
