It might be difficult to see Xenosaga on the PSN because it could be a nightmare, legally. It all depends on who has the actual rights to Xenosaga. The publisher is Namco Bandai and they don't exactly have the best record of releasing things sometimes. And the other issue would be the developer of Xenosaga, Monolith Soft, is now owned by Nintendo.

I like the fact that they're finally going to bring PS2 classics to the PS3. However, there are plenty of PS1 classics still missing from the library like Legend of Dragoon, the original Legaia, Megaman Legends 1&2, Suikoden 2 and Breath of Fire 3.

Before this becomes an argument as to which GTA is the best...I'll say that San Andreas was the best in gameplay, Vice City was the best in being a loveable environment & having awesome characters.

With that...I want both Vice City & San Andreas. Of course...if I really wanted to play them, I have my PS2. =/

(sigh!) so now we know the real reason behind the extraction of PS2 games backwards compatibility. Just a way to make more money. And I guess because supposedly the PS2 backwards compatibility thing wasn't perfect and was causing the thing to overheat.

Maybe I'd actually finish Legaia 2 if it came to the PSN.. But isn't the whole reason PS2 games have to be re-mastered and not PSN released the fact that the PS3 can't play PS2 games anymore?

Um....any Legacy of Kain game? Hell, remake that whole series from the ground up w new graphics & make it one epic game. May be a little hard w the changing play styles, but I think they could find a medium that would fit the series well. They would have to use the same soundtracks because nobody could replace Tony Jay as The Wheel of Fate. This is way off topic, but did anyone here ever play The Neverhood? It's a PC game just to let u know. I heard something about it coming to mobile devices, but they REALLY need to put it on PSN.

I'll go for Okami. It would be better if Capcom could patch in Move support when it does come out. Controlling the celestial brush with it would be great! And oh, that would be my first Capcom purchase this console generation (excluding Resident Evil 4 HD) if ever.

Other PS2 games I'd like to see would be Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2, Sakura Wars: So Long My Love, GTA III, Rogue Galaxy, and Dragon Quest VIII.

And then there's DMC Collection, BLACK, FFXII(which will be huge because you can spend 2 hours to reach your destination despite not being lost).

And last but not least........THE XENOSAGA SERIES!!!!

Yakuza 1&2 there hard to find in stores. and it would give people who like Yakuza 3&4 but missed 1&2 a chance to catch up. & indigo prophecy alot of people ignored it back in 2005 but after the success of Heavy Rain i bet alot of people would like to play it.

since only on PSN seems to be all about RARE ps2 games they HAVE to put FFXI on their.. its available in stores on every system now EXCEPT ps2... the ps2 version goes for as much as 700 bucks on ebay and amazon

SSX Tricky!! Favourite Xtreme Sports game on PS2!! It will look awesome with HD visuals! Ahhh... so much colour and life in that game!

are these ps2 releases like god hand hd games? if not i would point out you can pick up all kinds of ps2 games a gamespot for a few bucks each. one of the many reasons i am happy to own a bw compatable ps3.

Most of the games everyone seems to want are readily available on eBay for less than they would be on PSN. With the PS1 RPGs, some of them like Suikoden are prohibitively expensive, but for the most part getting a physical copy works just as well and it's cheaper.

I think it would be a great idea to get those rare or really expensive games on PSN for a solid price, and anyone who's not a serious collector is going to go for their version rather than a used disc. I mean, $200 for Suikoden II on eBay, or $6 on PSN. I like physical copies, but this one's a no-brainer.

The Max Payne games come to mind.

Also I wouldn't mind having the other Medal of Honors. They weren't as good as Frontline, but they were still fun. Frequency and Amplitude would also be good additions. I've never played them, but I heard they were really good.

No. I never owned a dreamcast, but my uncle did when I was little and he isn't in to those type of games. He is the sports, fighters, and shooter type of guy. They are available on other systems though.

The anime is what actually introduced me to the series (which I thought was okay). This was the first and only sakura video game I have played. The only thing that I might pick up in the series next is Dramatic Dungeon Sakura Taisen, Sakura Taisen V Episode 0, then Sakura Taisen VI for the main series if they decide to make one.

@Coffeya: I also knew of the games because of the anime. The anime is not the greatest, but it was enough for me to like the cast. I love the characters in the Sakura Taisen franchise! I played all the Dreamcast games even if they're in Japanese and I could barely understand a thing. Ahhh, fandom! LOL

I've never managed to find a Fatal Frame game in store. I'd definitely pay the $10 for at least one of them.

With that out of the way, how the hell did Sony get around the PS2 emulation issues, and does this now lead to the possibility of the return on disc-based BC at long last?

I don't think Sony managed to get past BC issues completely.

Sony already had a working emotion engine emulation for the second wave of BC PS3s. Those PS3s did emulate some GS functionality in software, but it was mostly done in hardware. I don't think that they can have overcome the underlying problem which is emulating the GS GPU 100% in hardware. But I bet that they have identifies all the functionality that can be emulated and then analyzed the games to see which games only use that which can be emulated. I think the reason the games are PSN only is because each will ship with it's own personality file to tell the PS2 emulation how to configure for the game. You couldn't just drop the original PS2 disc in because the emulator will not know how to configure to run for that game.

At least, that is my opinion based on everything I know about PS2, PS3, hardware based PS2 BC on the PS3 and PS3 emulation of the PS2. Look at the list of titles; God Hand, Odin Sphere, Ring of Red, GrimGrimoire, and Maximo: Ghosts to Glory. Are those the games you would have picked to kick off full PS2 game compatibility on the PS3?

I hope I am wrong and this is somehow the pre-cursor to complete software emulation, but I doubt it.

True that all of those games are kind of low key, but I did some digging yesterday and found a post on the NeoGAF forums, which mentioned the following:

"Not all games are supported, shadow of memories & Hitman 2 are examples of games that just didn't work and they don't plan to try and get them to work. They also seem to be covering a huge list of games even fairly unknown games like The Seed: warzone."

Now, I know that it all has to be taken with a grain of salt and that you are more than likely correct, as per usual. However, that statement about a huge list of games being trialled does make me think that perhaps it will be more widespread than Sony is currently letting on. Let's not forget that not every game could be run with the Emotion Engine emulation, so it doesn't necessarily mean that full B/C will ever return, but a solid enough portion of games capable of being run via this new method certainly makes it possible, does it not?

That comment definitely sounds like they have produced an emulator but that compatibility is based very much on how the game was coded. I remember reading that the games are the original PS2 games, not remastered or anything like that. So it definitely sounds like emulation.

Games that used things like undocumented hardware tricks probably won't work. Remember Sony used to be fairly strict telling devs to stick to the rules when developing to maintain compatibility. There were even games that were developed that were not compatible with PS2 slim models because of this. I'd be willing to bet that the games that work on this will be the ones that use the standard gaming libraries and APIs Sony provided, and did not need to make use of the highest performance available on the GS.

Remember that the compatibility of the PS2 BC on the second wave of PS3s was only about 85%. I'd be willing to bet that a software emulation would be somewhere between 50% and 85% compatible. That still covers a huge number of games, but there will be many it doesn't cover too. Sony worked really hard to make that half and half BC work, and improved it after the initial launch.

I guess they took what they learned there and refined it for PSN release.

I mostly agree with Highlander here. Either it's emulation or a quick-and-dirty port. A good port would negate emulation issues - and the PS2 IS hard to emulate. I know Valkyrie Profile 2 looks a lot better on a PS2 than it does on my PS3. I suppose, like Highlander said, these games are cult classics that happened to be compatible.

id much rather HD remakes but if its PSN downloads or nothing then i guess that will do.
id love to see the whole NFS series on there, especially most wanted.
of course GTA has to make it, especially vice city.
DMC, though game have had a listing as this for a HD collection for a while now so hopefully that gets announced soon.
of course BLACK.
i wish $ony would just give us a open source ps2 emulator and let the fans play around with which games they want to use on it.
we HAVE to see R&C on there though, if not in collection form then at least on PSN!
i miss R&C up your arsenal, i was playing that right up until my 60GBs bluray drive decided to pack up.
then $ony refused to send me a BC console, only a slim.

I'm ok with anything and everything though. Without backwards compatibility on new PS3's, I've got a large collection of PS2 games I can't play. My PS2 is either with my sister or with my parents... all of which live over 20 hours away from me......

I don't think any big titles from the PS2 generation will be released because those will be held off for HD re-releases. So no, we won't see Jak & Daxter, Ratchet & Clank, Final Fantasy or Grand Theft Auto appear on the PSN.

What I would like to see is a lot of the smaller Sony first-party games: Drakan: The Ancients' Gates, Primal, Extinction, the Dark Cloud series, Rogue Galaxy... these would all benefit from a re-release on the PSN. Hell, maybe sales would be good enough for a PS3 remake and/or sequel.

The original games from franchises that have continued on the PS3 would be great to see here, too. How about the first Killzone? Or the first Genji?

There are some third-party games I'd like to see such as Okami, Mortal Kombat 5-7, Burnout 3: Takedown, Smuggler's Run 1-2... but I think there's a better chance of seeing first-party titles. Less paperwork for Sony.

Still, though, there's a LOT of potential with this program and I'll definitely be on board! Can't wait to play God Hand and many more that I missed on my PS2!

Well think about how this is being accomplished. It's being done through emulation. Sony has said before that they can't emulate everything that the GS did, so the games being released this way will be games that do not make use of GS functionality that can't be emulated. Games with advanced graphics typically used undocumented features of the GS as well as the full bandwidth it provided, those kinds of game are unlikely to appear this way. they require HD remastering to appear on Ps3.

Games that I don't want to see on the PSN are Gran Turismo 3 and 4, DragonQuest VIII, and even NFS: Most Wanted.. 0_0. I want them re-mastered! Of course, I'm probably the only that thinks this.

With DQ8's art style, can it even be remastered? It's sort of the best it can be without being redone from scratch, isn't it?

Only games from PSN, and it's only going to be a subset of games because it's only games that do not require full emulation of the GS. At least that's my opinion based on everything I have ever learned about the PS2,PS3 and emulation of the PS2.

I was surprized SONY didn't go the GS route with the PS3. Even MS went the PS2 way with Xenos and it's 10MB eDRAM.

You might see full emulation on the PS4. A CellBE could emulate the GS if it had nothing else to do, it has the internal bandwidth to manage it. If the PS4 comes with some form of Dual Cell, or a Cell family chipset with more SPUs it will certainly have the capability to do it in software. Because the CellBE on the PS3 has other things to do, such as running the EE emulation, it can't handle the GS as well. Just in pure hardware performance terms, if Sony could find a way to program RSX to handle most of the GS work, they might be able to squeeze the remainder of the GS work on to the Cell in addition to the EE emulation. But it would be a really complex task.

I think that what you will see on PSN are games that Sony has been able to identify as *not* using any of the GS functionality that can't be emulated.

That may not mean only 'lesser' games, but it will mean no games with heavily optimized graphics.

I hope for and against FF12 being put up for psn. I just spent 147 hours playing through it, and have everything except the last couple of marks: the omega mark 12 and the seer. I trounced Zodiark last night, and I just don't think I have the time to sink into another ridiculous run of that fantastically addicting game.

They're not PS2 classic but since Capcom remade Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil: Code Veronica X I hope they consider making HD remakes of Resident Evil 2 and 3 for the PS3.

So many!! I'd like HD remasters for these ones though, because I already own them for the PS2 anyway..

- Kingdom Hearts I and II
- Final Fantasy X (coming!! :D) and XII
- Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 and 4
- Dark Chronicle (Dark Cloud 2)
- Rogue Galaxy
- Suikoden III and V
- Dragon Quest VIII
- Project Zero I, II and III (I believe it's called Fatal Frame in the US)
- Okami

Those would be a dream come true. :)

...yeah. They still got fans, who are fans because they've played the game...on PS2! This is just another enabling article about how EVEN without the trophies and a remastering, we would still buy them. Why even consider it? If there's no difference apart from graphics, thank you, but no thank you. I already got it on PS2.
