Long Live Play Toasts "Michael" And We're Blown Away

Sony says thank you...and we kinda got all teary-eyed.

Last week, Sony teased the world by giving us a peek at an upcoming announcement. Well, as it turns out, the announcement involved that very video...we were only seeing the first part of it.

The full unveiling is below and at the PlayStation Blog. Remember when Sony asked you to submit a gamer photo and they promised you a mystery reward? Well, it's right here. They made their selection and the lucky gamer, "Michael," has been toasted by most every major PlayStation character of the generation.

Michael is the first of "a dozen or so die-hard gamers" that will represent PlayStation Nation in a new Long Live Play campaign. That campaign will hit national TV on October 5; i.e., today. That's right, Michael and anyone else selected will see their picture "up in lights," so-to-speak; this video here makes everyone jealous. How awesome is that?

The casting is just fantastic in this video, don't you think? Also, they say they loaded it with PlayStation Easter Eggs, some of which aren't immediately obvious. So watch it a few times to catch 'em all. This has to be one of the coolest promotions we've seen.

ah hah. i found an article on cvg saying this the best videogame commercial ever but they said old snake does not look right. so i'm not crazy after all. not that i would say cvg's word is gold, but i am glad i'm not the only one who thought old snake looks different somehow.;

I thought Snake was fine. Infact, I think Snake was more closely represented than Lightning was in terms of appearance. Actually, I don't know. Bottom line, they're really good attempts imo.

That was probably one of the best ads I have ever seen. Lets see, how many characters can we spot? I'll start Lol. Nathan Drake, Lightning, Cole Mcgrath, Isaac Clark, Ghost, Agent 47, SweetTooth, Old Snake, Portal, Sackboy, Athena, Kratos, 3 random Helghast in background, Girl from Bioshck, Paul Phoenix, Enzio, Ratchet, NCAA player, Rico, and the Chimera. Let me know If I missed any.

I think that's pretty much it, but I thought Sony should've had more easter egg of other exclusives that wasn't represented like Gran Turismo, Modnation Racers, Heavy Rain, WKC, Last Guardian, etc. While it may be hard to implement them, I can think of several miniscule detail they can do to represent them. Maybe I'm missing it, Idk.

i think theres a big daddy in there too, the first time you see cole you can see his eyes and a large outline...of course it could be another helghast tho

i agree it is epic. cole does look accurate. does anybody else agree the look of snake is a little off? maybe its the uncanny valley effect at a higher resolution but he looks different somehow.

That's a brilliant piece of work. One of the best ads I've ever seen! This type of advertising is what Sony needs!

I'm just saying maybe KB shoulda been in There to help chant lol. Although I understand he doesn't quite fit the plot.

I'm wondering if Sony fired a ton of their marketing department a few years ago because everything I've seen since 2009 has been great. This is the best videogame commercial I've seen in the past decade.

They changed PR companies, but I think that happened before 2009.

IIRC the CG ads with the Saliva song ("Ladies and Gentlemen") were the first done by the new firm.

K, as a video enthusiasts, I really appreciate the production value in this thing. Everything is detailed in the setting, and the 3D animation characters are ever so real. And yes, Sackboy was awesome! Just look at him.

Long Live Play! is now permanently etched into my brain. Sony sure has a winning campaign with this one. Especially with the previous campaign being a success. I would say this is the best commercial for a gaming console ever made. Especially with the fact they were giving a real gamer a nod of respect, just brilliant Sony!

Very cool ad, and nice to see something other than Kevin Butler for a change (not that there's anything wrong with his ads). They obviously put quite a bit of money into this video, and I especially like Cole with lightning between his hands and sackboy playing chess.

Not quite sure about the ending with all this Michael stuff, I get it's supposed to represent the gamer, but IMO it could've been done better... Why would I care about Michael? I've also seen plenty of comments saying 'Who the h*ck is Michael", and I kind of agree...

Overall great video tho!

Ummm your Michael! Not literally, your the player as is Michael. When they put his picture up on the wall at the end, you see what signifies all the other gamers photos out there. The commercial is for us the gamers.

If people are seriously asking who Michael is, I fear they should invest more time in doing something different.

What I was trying to say is more that there's a lot of talk of this specific person called 'Michael' which you only assume at the end is the guy in the picture, but why not just say 'here's to YOU [showing picture of 'Michael']' or 'Here's to The Gamer' or something, I don't know... but 'Here's to Michael' sounds wrong...

Still, all in all though, Great ad, and great atmosphere in the video. Definitely one of the coolest Sony ads I've seen.

This is a cool commercial and all...but Sony billed this as a "major announcement."

Now, normally I'd be okay with this. However, M$ made an announcement today as well that has far more meaning than Sony's. They announced how they made a whole crap ton of deals with TV networks and all kinds of other companies to expand the media capabilities of Live. And I don't mean dinky little deals that don't mean anything, I mean exclusive content and apps and music-related content and a whole boatload of other stuff. Just search up "microsoft 360 announcement" on google and you'll see it all over the place.

Now, to a whole ton of people, those kind of enhancements are a BIG deal. And what does Sony do? Release a commercial that says how their thank their fans for supporting them and yadda yadda yadda.

Besides, even if it is a cool commercial, only non-casual gamers are gonna get it. It won't attract anyone new to Playstation unless they think its funny, and it'll just be weird to everyone else.

So really, what I'm saying here is that Sony dropped the ball with this one. I love ya Sony, but compared to M$, this was not a very substantial or wise business move.

That's exactly the point. Sony is telling gamers they appreciate THEM, not the faceless masses that may or may not become gamers. It's the kind of appreciation that often resonates with the masses, too.

Essentially, it's about reaching the masses by saying, "this isn't FOR you...but it COULD be you."

Sony used a pic of me, but its too hard to locate. I know they used it cause I have the email and everything where Sony asked if I would allow them to use it after entering in the contest for "The Ultimate Gamer." Great commercial. I thought they did a brilliant job in production.

Excellent commercial. Sackboy is still such a lovable little character.

Am I the only one that thought Kratos looked really awkward? Not only did his body seem fake and glossy, but his head was huge and round.

everyone was thinking it would be a revamp of PSN or a XMB change or a release date for vita, something worth of making a video for.

Man, I submited my picture for this, and they said they wanted to use it. I guess its one of the pictures littering the roof or something. It would have been really sweet to get a better view of those pictures. Oh well, still awesome that I know my picture is somewhere up there.
