Kojima Just Can't Seem To Get Away From Metal Gear Solid

Yes, Hideo Kojima wants to try something new. He has wanted to try something new for a while, in fact.

But he remains dedicated to his baby: Metal Gear Solid. In fact, in speaking at USC this week, the master said he would love to see the legendary franchise continue after he dies. "I will always want to still make them," Kojima said.

But at the same time, should we typecast this visionary video game maker? Should he be restricted from making fresh endeavors? Of course he should be allowed to branch out, but Kojima admits that whenever he tries to hand off a MGS installment to other people at the studio, it never goes quite right.

"But as a creator, of course, I want to do something new, and I don’t want to be limited to Metal Gear forever, right? So of course I have tried in the past. I’ve tried to hand Metal Gear off to other people within the studio and I’ve tried to raise people up so they have the ability to take over. And I think since Metal Gear Solid 3 I’ve tried this and actually did hand it off and have other people come up with the story and come up with the game design. But for some reason it just never really works out. And, you know, I end up having to step in again to take charge and kind of fix things here and there and just get sucked back in unfortunately."

Boy, can't you just picture that? The perfectionist who puts his faith in some talented guys, but he just can't let them do everything they want...the call of MGS is just too strong for Kojima, and we can understand that. Still, we'd love to see something entirely new from this guy.

Yeah I'm interested in his new game more, I think MGS is just going to go downhill starting at Rising like every series does when it goes multiplat so F it and let him do whatever he wants. I understand his urge not to let it get screwed up but it's going to happen anyway.

When Wii-U comes out. Games will go multi platform three-ways. It won't be an easy port from one console to the next. Developers might need 3 separate teams to build the games.

Wii U's disc will only be able to go 25gbs. Not exactly next gen material considering even games like Rage and BF3 needs a install. The MGS series won't go far if it's anything less than blu-ray, unless the other two are willing to go like 5 discs, or something. That would be one fat case.

Also, I just have this feeling that Wii-U's technical abilities is just gonna get stomped on by Sony's and MS's next machine, again. If it's a 3 way mult-plat, we'd have to have to worry about that lowest common denominator again since Wii is finally going HD. To be fair, we haven't really seen anything from the console yet, but knowing Nintendo with their 3DS and Wii, I don't think it's gonna be too advanced.

If he really loves MGS so much... I believe if there is an MGS5, it will be PS3 exclusive. I hope.

If he really doesn't want anyone to mess it up. Just don't let anyone make anything related to it anymore, just stop it. And work on something else.

Hey I'm just as disappointed with the direction MGS is taking but to wish it's never released is a bit childish. It will be released whether you like it or not.

Highly doubtful. People said the exact same thing about Final Fantasy XIII. How did that turn out? The PS3 version outsold the 360 version nearly 2 to 1.

i agree with jawk. surely the mgs series has a larger fanbase on the ps3. as for mgs 5 ps3 exclusive...i have my doubts about that. it looks like konami has every intention of taking that series multiplat. the writing is kind of on the wall with hd collection. for some reason it bugs the hell out of me the 360 is getting peacewalker the same day as sony fans. more so than rising even. i still have vivid memories of kojima's appearence on ms's stage at e3. the look on his face was that of man none to happy to there. stage fright or general revulsion towards ms?

Oh for goodness sake. The series is over. I'm sorry, but it is. You can't make a sequel to an ending like MGS4, and if you did it would come off as disingenuous and unneeded, no matter how excellent the game is. He needs to work on something new.

I don't like that he keeps being dragged back to Metal Gear, as I truly want to see something new and spectacular from him, but I can't blame the guy. It is hard to see something that you love tainted by the vision and touch of another...

I'm willing to let go, but he needs to remake Metal Gear & Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake first, fans have been asking him to for years.

I think the eventual MGS5 will probably be the sequel to Peace Walker that he hinted at sometime ago.

I have a hard time believing that he didn't want to make MGS4, i mean he left a whole bunch of unanswered questions with MGS2, and then he was just going to pass 4 off to somebody else?

That's exactly the point of MGS2. Handing down our information to the next generation.

He left MGS2 open for the next generation to take over and that's what was supposed to happen with 3.

MGS2 banged on about that theme of future generations learning from the past, with the opening cinematic showing Hieroglyphics which montages through the ages up until the present digital age. Then you have the philosophical ending monologue which bats it home further.

So Kojima is talking truth.

Perhaps so, but my opinion on something like this is if you start something you should see it through to the end.

Kojima created MGS2, hence he created the the unanswered questions. Nobody would have been satisfied with answers put forth by someone else.

And that is the answer. He just couldn't do it....even after all that effort explaining why in MGS2.

I the interview the other day its up on Gametrtailers, really inspirational stuff. He talks more about him as a person than his profession over all and its really interesting to hear.

As for Metal Gear, well i'm standing my ground in saying it is OVER. How many more prequels can they really get away with? doing an MGS4 set after MGS4 is an impossibility ( and trust me, I've heard all the theories...) but I say this in honesty, I think Metal Gear has finished, if they do anymore it will just be forced.

Oh hell no, I love the MGS series but it's gotta stop.
Are they gonna keep making more spin-offs and prequels? Or they're gonna reboot the series?
Or will they surprise everyone with another sequel like how Microsoft did with Halo 4?
I don't like where this is going...........

That being said, I'll still buy it though, despite what I said, I'm a gamer and I'll buy what's good.

I agree with you on everything else though.

I agree with Snaaaaakkke. I love MGS as well, but I agree it's gotta come to an end. The main story is just about complete. Rising is gonna be meh. The core MGS series, the Kojima series has room for one more Big Boss game, but even still it would be unnecessary after Peace Walker's stunning ending. But Hideo did it in a way where if they decided to continue it would make sense, but at the same time, it could end right there.

And if there's another game with Snake in it, then that'll just be terrible. MGS4 was a great ending to a legend, and needs not continue. Both BB and Snake have really interesting arcs to them and the changes and developments that are instilled in them game by game are remarkable.

They're the same at their core, but their perception of the world and how they feel always changes. I love that about the series. Snake has nothing left to do, BB can continue to build his army. That's it.

I say close it out with a final game on the PS3 with Big Boss that is the ultimate prequel to the original Metal Gear. Then the circle shall be complete. No more.

But I know that won't happen. MGS is a money maker and the best series ever (IMHO) to some like myself. It's critically and financially successful and I'll find it hard for Konami to stop making these games.

I just hope it doesn't get absurd. Rising could be good, but probably won't be, because it just doesn't feel like a Metal Gear game. I like the idea of hunter stealth, but the story sounds weak.

I dunno, I hope Kojima can do something new because from a story and game design standpoint, he's done as much as he can with this epic and beautiful series.

You know, I wish Kojima did have somebody he could trust with the MGS series. That way there would be a new series he could do that I could get into.

The fan inside me wants MGS5. The gamer inside me wants something new and innovative that only Kojima can do.

Is this guy a family man? I thought maybe he could entrust his vision to one of his family or really close relative, if he's that worried. I'm assuming his family/close would respect his vision the most, and would want his legacy to live on the way he wanted.

Unfortunately, in Kojima's eyes, no one will be "worthy" to carry the weight of the MGS series on their shoulders. It's Kojima's baby and I understand that he doesn't want to let go. And i know it's been said before, but I wish IF and only IF they came out with a MGS5 then it would be PS3 exclusive solely due to me not wanting it gimped by the size of the disc and the quality of textures and sound (MGS4 had a CRAZY amount of uncompressed audio). I could less about the whole "360ers get to play it" sh*t. i just want a creatively and technical knockout that Kojima is known for.

I know its hard for him, but Kojima's gotta let MGS go. Its done, its caput, its finished. The only thing you can do with it now is make prequels and spinoffs, and those will get old after a while. And nothing can be made after the finish that was MGS4, unless you want to come across as forced.

That said, I would probably buy an MGS5 because Kojima made it, but it would not feel right. So cmon Kojima, make something new, or get to work on ZOE3. Just do something other than MGS.

Damn would be nice to see what else Kojima can come up with.. MGS will all ways be Kojima's game no one else can do it, I guess if Kojima has a idea for MGS he should put in his ideas into it then pass it on to others to come up with the rest ensuring they use Kojima's ideas as the foundation and work around from that...
