Will Batman Challenge Uncharted 3 For Game Of The Year?

Many assume that Naughty Dog's Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception - which has gone gold, by the way - will be in the running for Game of the Year.

And if you want to talk about competition, gamers will point to titles like L.A. Noire, Portal 2, LittleBigPlanet 2, Gears of War 3, Forza 4, and Dark Souls, among others. Other competitors that have yet to arrive include Battlefield 3, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and Assassin's Creed: Revelations. But might Batman: Arkham City, which launches next week, be Uncharted 3's stiffest competition?

Perhaps people forget how good Arkham Asylum was, and they've missed the many videos and previews for the newest title. Perhaps the reason the first game was a tad overlooked is because that year, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves stole the spotlight and earned just about every major award on the planet. It's possible that Uncharted 3 will once again steal Batman's thunder, but early reviews are singing the Caped Crusader's praises. Game Informer has already given it a perfect 10, and we can definitely expect more super high scores.

It was a runaway for Uncharted 2 but as time goes on, the competition just gets stiffer and stiffer. And this year, when it's all said and done, Arkham City might just make critics and journalists think twice before awarding that coveted Game of the Year title.

Watch as Uncharted 3 average 8.5 almost everywhere, don't why Uncharted 2 didn't suffer this fate but I'm glad it didn't.

Now I get a feeling Uncharted 3 might suffer the "biased" fate.

One of the worst parts about working for UPS is when a box smashes open like yesterday and a bunch of copies of a new game yet to be released pops out. It was a bunch of copies of arkham city packed with the first one. I always want to take a copy but I know I'd risk losing my job :P

i loaded so. many. video games. it was crazy.

No. While these Batman games are great, I just can't see it being better than Uncharted 3. No way, no how. The production values, voice acting and story telling in Uncharted mops the floor with Arkham Asylum. I see Uncharted 3 doing the same with Arkham City.

Was joking mate.
Jokes aside though Jawk, I doubt that being a more complete game doesn't warrant a GOTY as well.
Not trying to argue or disagree with you, but Mario Galaxy said otherwise.

Though Arkham City doesn't even hold a candle to Uncharted 3, it's running on the Unreal Engine 3 after all.

Back in 2007 as well Jawk, the first SMG was universally acclaimed.
GOTY here and there.

Though you can't argue on that one, SMG was a fun game.

Isn't it funny how this year is like deja vu? 2009 had Assassin's Creed II, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, and Batman: Arkham Asylum? Two short years later we've got Assassin's Creed: Revelations, Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, and Batman: Arkham City.

On topic, I believe that Arkham City deserves a chance to get Game of the Year awards, it's personally my most anticipated title this year next to Drake's Deception. But Uncharted 3 will be the PS3's powerhouse title and I am rooting for it wholeheartedly to win the coveted award.

Don't forget Modern Warfare 2 in 2009 and MW3 in 2011 now.

This is the biggest year of video games since 1998!! I've been saving really hard for this year's releases. Shame some will have to wait til next year.

I think the votes and nominations for Game of the Year will be the toughest yet!! It's almost impossible to tell which will win!!

I mean, between Uncharted 3, Batman Arkham City, Battlefield 3, MW3, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Forza 4, Gears of War 3, Zelda Skyward Sword and Assassin's Creed Revelations, it's almost like the winner of GOTY will come down to personal choice of the source.

In my personal opinion, I hope it's Uncharted 3. I don't think Battlefield 3 or MW3 would reach higher status than Batman AC or Uncharted or Skyrim, cos they're FPS' that have been seen and done many times before over the last few years. Sure Battlefield 3 has a new engine and looks awesome, but it's still you standard modern day warfare FPS.

I can see many debates and arguments blowing up all over the internet come the end of this year.

I'm rooting for Uncharted 3 to be this year's GOTY, just because it is my absolute favourite franchise this console generation. But that said, I wouldn't mind if Batman: Arkham City bags it if the game is fully deserving of the title.

What matters to me is that we get great games to play. I am not looking forward to the fanboy wars that could erupt should there be no definite GOTY across the board. Uncharted 2 did that in 2009, but it's definitely a lot more competitive this year.

My bet's on Skyward Sword. Despite all the competitors doing something really well, Skyward Sword is the only title doing something really new. And, it's Zelda. Zelda can do no wrong. Such a big change in the Zelda formula is pretty important. Plus, those motion controls look awesome. And I usually don't like motion controls.

Other than possibly Skyrim, it has the biggest value too. 100 hours of gameplay and a second quest? Nice.

i read on cvg that games master gave batman ac a 97, i do find it interesting they gave gears 3 a 93 and rage a 92. so it looks like they liked batman a lot. austriala's official playstation magizine gave it a perfect score as well. so yes it does sound like it could very well be a contender in goty awards. with so little information available it's really difficult to speak inteligently on this matter.

I really loved Arkham Asylum, but it didn't leave the lasting impression that Uncharted 2 did for me (I had to play UC2 again as soon as I finished the 1st play through).

I don't see LBP2 or LA Noire giving too big a run for the money, although I liked them both. Sadly, I was a bit let down with LA Noire. It turned out to be a little too repetitive. Portal 2? Outstanding game! Not GOTY, methinks.

I've just started Dark souls and am having a masochistic blast so far. It is just a tad too early for me to make a guess as to if it will be a GOTY contender.

I have high hopes for UC3 and hope it lives up to what everyone expects.

Either way, I don't think anyone of us should worry too much about it. So many great games this year = we all win.

Honesty along side Uncharted 3, if Skyrim lives up to the hype and the following of Oblivion that game has as good a chance as any to get GOTY. Of course I think Uncharted 3 will be the best game though.

I just hope that 8-9 hour length is an exaggeration and whoever played it had a 24 pack of mountain dew next to them. Anything less than 10 hours, especially so SP oriented like Uncharted always has been known for, will be a little disappointing. Oh and I don't care how long it took IGN to finish the other two.

Batman will definitely prove to be stiff competition, but I just know that something about the game will be off for me. Much like Arkham Asylum, it was a good game, no fear, but something about it just didn't gel with my tastes. I predict that there is no way and no how that ACity will be my GotY. My prediction is either UC3 or Skyrim. If both of them fail to live up to my expectations, then it defaults to inFamous 2. That game was great.

I too were not too excited about the first Batman game, even though I saw its qualities.
But in my case I suspect it's a combination of not being too familiar with the Batman universe, and me being grumpy it's not a Marvel hero. I can be childish like that at times. :)

If we keep ME2 out of this (that game struck a chord in me like few other games this millennium) I too have no idea what game will end up as my personal GOTY.

Already Crysis 2 and Deus Ex are two ultrastrong candidates, and I expect to totally dig Saints Row 3.
I never really liked Oblivion but Skyrim may turn out to be a completely different matter. It probably is.
And this Batman game looks to be better in every possible way. Even Uncharted looks to have been loosening up it's tightness and I do not rule out that it may end up being the surprise of the year for me.
Lovely!

Uncharted 3 FTW no doubt. I see Batman and Skyrim as stout challenges but no more than contenders who will get knocked out by the champion, U3. Uncharted 3 is Anderson Silva. Arkham City is Chael Sonnen, Skyrim is Yushin Okami. LOL, I love Gears, but Gears 3 is poor Rich Franklin always losing to Anderson.

I think Arkham City will get the nod for being multiplat. That or Gears of War 3. For some reason I see don't see many reviewers praising Uncharted 3 like they did Uncharted 2. I'm expecting like an 80% average in reviewer scores and for them to say something along lines of "it's good but we seen this all before/it's not original/blah blah blah". I personally think it will top Uncharted 2 and am really anxious to get it.

I know AC is going to be a great game and I'm going to play it a shit ton but Uncharted will be the better game. I know there will be reviewers out there knocking it for linearity but when it comes down to it people who loved Uncharted 3 will love it more than Arkham City. It may garner a higher aggregate score but U3 will take more GOTY awards. Skyrim just isn't my type of game. It'll be a great game but I didn't really care much for Oblivion and I know I'm in the minority there and I understand anyone who disagree's with me.

It might be able to. I think U3 is still going to be my personal GOTY, but I don't know. Arkham City looks sick, and is definitely in the running.

Still haven't played either so can't say yet.

I do think however that Revelations will be stronger than Brotherhood in the story department. I was going to wait on Revelations, but after hearing that Ubisoft Montreal was the key development studio, I'm much more pumped. It also looks like a better game, and I love Ezio as a character. Can't wait to see what awaits him at the end of this epic journey.

I just hope the better game wins. But one thing Batman AC will have that U3 won't is longer play time. I bet Batman AC is a 30 hour game, 50 or more for platinum. Unlike U3 which will be most likely 12 hours for me or 25 hours for me going for platinum. Just reading an article likes this really rams it home that 2 of the best games of the year or possibly this generation are coming out within weeks of each other!!! We all win!

I guarantee LBP2 is not in the running for GOTY.

As for Batman, yes, I do believe it will be this year's GOTY. Instead of giving us more of the same, or in some cases, "worse" of the same, Batman seems to be impressing the snot out of critics. It's longer than UC3, will have a longer (maybe even better?) story, better voice acting and more engaging gameplay.

Frankly, I'm rather excited about getting my hands on it and finding out for myself if what is being said about it is true.

Well, Batman's certainly gonna put up a hell of a fight at this rate. I'm rooting for U3 of course, but if Batman is the better game this year, then obviously it deserves GotY.

Although tbh, I can't wait for both games. They are my most anticipated games of 2011, besides AC:Revelations. Yeah, I am excited for Elder Scrolls V, and yes it looks amazing, but I just don't think it competes with what I've seen of the other 3 aforementioned titles.

Now, as far as what will win "official" GotY for 2011, that's tough. Despite it not being mentioned at all by anyone here (probably due to it being released at the beginnning of the year, and so many awesome games have come out since then and made people forget about it), I still think Dead Space 2 should be nominated for GotY at this point. Portal 2, L.A. Noire, and inFamous 2 are the other current GotY contenders.

Now if R3 had a longer campaign, I would have listed that too, but alas it didn't (although it had an excellent one). And if Rage had introduced something new, I would have listed that too, but alas, it didn't do that (although it is also excellent). And Gears 3 is fun and actually manages to deliver a decent story, but its definitely not GotY material. So I'm left with Batman: Arkham City (which by all accounts is going to replace one of the current contenders for GotY as soon as it releases), Uncharted 3 (automatic contender), Assassin's Creed: Revelations, and Elder Scrolls V.

So what we end up with is U3, ACR, Skyrim, Batman:AC, i2, and Portal 2. I took out L.A. Noire and DS2 because while those games are excellent, and they were certainly contenders for GotY halfway through the year, they're not GotY contenders for the rest of year when compared to even more brilliant titles. But anyways, by all accounts, picking which of these 6 games is best is going to be hard.
