Final Fantasy XIV Finally Hits PS3 For Holiday 2012

Square Enix has admitted that the disastrous Final Fantasy XIV launch has damaged the franchise's good name.

But they continue to make strides to fix the problems and now, Square Enix has given MMORPG fans an important update.

Producer and director Naoki Yoshida said the title's free trial run will finally end between late November and early December. So here comes the standard subscription fees. But at least players didn't have to pay while Square Enix went to work on the seriously broken title, so maybe gamers should at least be thankful for that little nugget.

Furthermore, it was revealed that the PlayStation 3 version now has a new release window: "between October and December of 2012." That's right, FFXIV just became a holiday 2012 title and when it arrives, they'll start a "second free trial period." After the PS3 launch, Square Enix intends to revamp in-game maps, switch to a new client and new servers, and give PC players new software (don't worry, it'll be free). For more info, click through the link above and read up on all the info; they've tossed up some handy PDFs for your reference.

This is a long and arduous journey, isn't it?

What a disaster this has been. Props to SE I guess for trying to make it right, but is anyone else as completely disinterested in this game as I am?

I really dont think your the only 1 that isnt intrested in this game anymore, I mean really, it's just old news now.

On another note, as some1 that has played it on and off, and has played the game with it's newest content update, I think SE is INSANE to want to charge for this game as early as december..... honestly, it is still a mess... the UI is STILL garbage, there still isnt much in the way of content, the classes in the game are all the same pretty much, the world is pretty empty and boring, still no mail system, still no Auction House, and to top this pretty little picture off, there isnt much in the way of a playerbase... and this is a free game atm.

In the end, this game is still missing bare basics for a MMORPG, I have no idea how they could have messed this up so badly from the get go with the sucessful FFXI to pretty much us use as a template.... I can only imagine how much of the playerbase drops when they start asking for money.

Will things change a year from now.... maybe, but this game will always be a flop.

This game has definitely been improved.

Still though... Subscription fees and the like. I'm not into them as much anymore....

I want to get into it, but I'm not sure I will.

Just wait for Diablo III, that might be out this holiday season. It has been in the works for years but who knows...maybe this year will be the year

Diablo won't be out this year. Blizzard stated about a month or so ago that it'll be early next year.

Yeah, it doesn't have that great of a value imo with these online games. I'd rather pay 60 bucks upfront with a game that can last me for two years, and there's quiet a bit of them. In two years time, that's much more than 60 dollars, even if it's as cheap as 5 dollars a month.

Imagine when Xbox get this game. They'll be paying for online access, and this game monthly. In one year's time, the game will cost over $100 easily.

The game is definitely more playable now compared to how it was. I may just keep my character going when the subscription fees kick in.

Aha so you play it now? Interesting!
Have you played other mmorpgs? If so, how is this one compared to them?

Yeah I've played it off and on since launch to check on the progress being made. I've played/play loads of MMO's. In it's current state, FFXIV still has a little way to go but there is still potential in there you can see it. FFXI is still the better of the two for now but Lord of the Rings Online still gets the most MMO playing time from me currently. If Square/Enix want to get any real money from me though, they better hurry since I won't be playing it too much after The Old Republic comes out 10 weeks. And hopefully that will keep me occupied until 2013 when Dark Millennium comes out.

Anybody here an experience online gamer, based on subscription fee? What do you get with these games and how worthy is the monthly payment? I have no idea, so I apologize in advance. I do like to know though.

I've played a few mmorpgs on PC for a total of 6-7 years or so I guess. The titles I've played are mainly Anarchy Online, Star Wars Galaxies and Matrix Online, but I'm also familiar with City Of Heroes and a few smaller ones that's no longer around.

What you get for the monthly fee is simply put content and support. New quests, items, dungeons, continuous bugfixes and optimization of code, and cover the cost of a persistent "virtual world" with its online community. These servers are not in any way comparable with the simple "game matching" servers found for regular multiplayer games, these servers hosts the game world and simply put everything that happens ingame happens on these servers. That costs. The game running on your machine is just a client connected to these servers.
Typically a mmorpg receive some *radical* enhancements during the first year after the launch. Think of it as a game where the devs keeps building and polishing on it also after you bought it.

It is also online support (at least that was the case in AO and SWG), where you can call support ingame if you got some technical issues and an actual living person appears (with their ingame avatar or via chat interface) to help you out.

One thing that is important to understand is the *size* of these games. I played Anarchy Online non-stop for close to four years and when I left there were still plenty of stuff I'd not done or seen. I had not even reached max level on any of my characters.

Well seeing as how the monthly fees keep the servers going and funds further development of future content, that allow should be reason enough for the fees. The free to play MMO's show what the fees are for up front. Play without paying and you can only progress so far and usually can't access the really good stuff, like expansions if there are any. Pay the monthly fee, and the full game and all it's contents are opened up to you. Guild Wars is an exception, since it's has never had monthly fee since coming out in '05. It makes the majority of it's money on the expansion prices and some other transactions.

Though other big name MMO's have done away with monthly fees in the last few months, and microtransactions have taken their place causing a lot of content to be taken out and having a price put on them separately.

The second I found out they were reinstating the monthly fees, I cancelled my FFXIV account.

No thanks, I'm going to pass this round.

Wait, wait, wait! Are you telling me that Final Fantasy XIV, a game announced AFTER Final Fantasy Versus XIII, now has a release date for the PS3, even though the original release date was March 2011?!

So, basically Final Fantasy XIV has had TWO release dates now for the PS3 yet we haven't heard ONE friggin' detail about Versus XIII besides "lighting" and "cell phones" since January?!

Yoichi Wada, you are by far the WORST thing that's ever plagued Square-Enix. Seriously.

I have an idea, and something tells me I'm not alone on this one;
How about Square-Enix NOT mess up the main series and stop making some of them online, it messes everything up AND since it has XIV in its name, it was a terrible loss because it was part of the 'main series' rather than a side project. There's should have been "Final Fantasy Online 1&2", not XI and XIV that don't come to par to be considered a main series title. Oh well, Final Fantasy started dying with FFX and X-2 anyway.
