You know, games about bank robbers aren't very frequent. In fact, I honestly can't recall ever playing a bank robbing game. You'd think that it'd make for a good and fun game, seeing as how "cops and robbers" is practically a staple of American adolescent-youth. Well, here come Codemasters, with inXile Entertainment developing a game called HEI$T.
For the sake of not having to hit the shift button to capitalize and get the dollar-sign to replace the letter S, I'll just refer to HEI$T as Heist for the remainder of this preview. My laziness out of the way, Heist is a game that allows you to take on the role of a leader of renegade criminals wh rob and steal all throughout San Francisco, and their main objective is set on The Mint. The game takes place in 1969, the summer of love, as Codemasters calls it. You are Johnny Sutton, an ex-convict who's just been released from jail. He is the descendant of a long line of major thieves, so it all runs in his blood. Johnny sets up shop with his Uncle Sal, and a reunited crew of other robbers. There'll be dozens of heists to pull off in the game, all with the objective of Johnny Sutton becoming the greatest bank robber of all time.
The getaway will be an important component of the game, and so you'll be required to perform well while driving in order to evade the police for good. You'll race through the streets of San Francisco, running from cops that feature more balls than you'd imagine, as they'll bump and ram you, try to spin you out of control, in addition to setting up barricades and spike strips. If this is pulled off successfully, this could end up being Need for Speed Hot Pursuit with bank robbing.
And you're not going to just rob banks, but bars, restaurants, strip clubs, armored cars, and more. Your small heists will fund the tools you'll need for your larger bank heists, leading up to the ultimate one. Furthermore, each bank has its own individual security precautions setup, so strategy will become integral in how you approach the heist. Also, civilian casualties are something you'll want to limit in the game, and that goes for the heists and when you're driving.
"We designed HEI$T so that players feel like a part of the best robberies and car chases from classic movies," states Maxx Kaufman, Creative Director at inXile Entertainment. "Everything from the different types of jobs to pull and the reckless pursuits by the police through the streets of San Francisco, to the sarcastic banter back and forth between the members of the crew gives HEI$T the action and style of the great attitude and rock-driven films of the 60's."
Heist seems to be coming along well in development, as it features a particularly retro aesthetic style. It's visuals look solid, though not spectacular. But bear in mind that these screenshots may still represent a very early indicator of the game, as Heist isn't due out until Fall of 2008 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. Keep your eyes peeled for this one, because it's sounding good.
