When we had to decide the Game of the Year Award in 2007, it came down to God of War II and Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. After plenty of debate, we decided to award co-ownership of the prestigious award to both amazing games, and ever since, we’ve been anxiously anticipating the follow-up to Naughty Dog’s wonderfully designed IP. Well, after a few debut teaser trailers (make sure to check our PS3 Videos!), a bunch of new screenshots (just click above, peeps), and a horde of new information thanks to an unveiling for multiple journalists, we can now provide you with an in-depth preview. We’re warning you, though: once you’re done reading this, you may not be able to wait until the end of the year. You might raise your torches and pitchforks and storm Naughty Dog HQ in an effort to play even a few minutes of the incomplete project. We can’t condone that behavior, of course, but we would certainly understand the driving force behind the assault. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves will be amazing, and that’s one prediction we’re not afraid to make.

If you finished Uncharted and said to yourself, “damn, I want more,” than prepare to be happy: “more” is exactly what you’re going to get. More climbing, more battles (and more ways to go about battle), more storyline (romantic interest included), more action sequences, more, more, more; it’s all a-comin’. You can expect intense stuff like out-of-control trains, crumbling walls of death, swarming enemies, helicopter gun battles, and some very cool partner interaction, so pay close attention. If you’re not quite familiar with the premise, let us educate you on that aspect first- Drake is on a quest to find Marco Polo’s fortune in this sequel. Marco Polo set sail for home after attending the court of Kublai Khan for around 20 years, and the trip back began with 14 ships, 600 men, and gigantic piles of treasure. But when the disastrous voyage ended a year and a half later, the intrepid explorer was down to 1 ship and a mere 18 men. Oddly enough, Marco Polo would never tell anyone what happened; his closest friends and relatives only learned the barest details. Even on his deathbed, the explorer admitted that he “didn’t tell half of what he saw.”

Literary buffs may recall Joseph Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness” – you know, “the horror…the horror…” – when reading that brief description, and one has to admit, it’s a compelling concept. What a great way to start a story! And Drake could really use the financial boost of finding that lost treasure, too, as he begins this sequel as little more than a roving bum, devoid of any significant funds. This means he battles with pirates and thieves and doesn’t exactly spend his days in 5-star hotels on the Riviera. But when you learn about a priceless treasure and meet up with a pretty girl, your life can take a major turn and you may soon find yourself dodging bullets and skirting precarious cliffs. The girl in question is Chloe Frazer, just as cocky and full-of-herself as Drake (perfect match, no?), and it appears the two may have experienced a whirlwind relationship at some point. It’s clear the two have some history together, although Naughty Dog refuses to elaborate. We do know that both are thrown together in an effort to locate Shambhala, or Shangri-La, where the Cintamani Stone is rumored to be. It’s a giant sapphire that’s also the Buddhist’s Holy Grail…and it’s worth a loooot of money.  And of course, Nathan and Chloe aren't the only ones going after it...duh.

Then, of course, we have the gameplay. Fans of the original will be happy to know that the developers aren’t about to change the foundation; “if it ain’t broke,” and all that. However, there will be a few new features that ought to enhance the experience and bring everything to a whole new level. For example, according to IGN, Naughty Dog emphasized giving the player choices this time around. In other words, while they are implementing a new stealth mechanic, you can choose to sneak about or you can choose to go in guns blazing. It’s entirely up to you, and both ways will work out just fine, provided you perform admirably. If your foes haven’t spotted you yet, you can sneak about and dispatch them silently, and as a very cool addition, Drake will move differently if his opponents haven’t yet acknowledged his existence. So you can snag an unsuspecting pirate from behind or reach up and toss someone over the ledge you’re currently hanging from, or you can simply dive into the third-person shooter mechanic you learned in the original. It’s similar to Gears of War with it’s shoot ‘n cover system, and it works exceedingly well.

And your choices won’t end with the combat. You can even engage in battles in the midst of climbing! This is almost a must, as much more of the environment is scalable this time around, and it would be all too easy to scramble up high, out of the reach of your pursuers. But Naughty Dog isn’t about to succumb to such a flaw; your foes will follow you, so you may find yourself unloading full clips at diligent enemies who are rapidly closing your position…and instead of standing on the ground, you’re firing from the edge of a cliff or even hanging upside down. This is a feature the developers are calling “traversal gameplay,” and while we’ve seen glimpses of similar mechanics in other games in the past, we fully expect this to be a new experience. The only question that remains is how big of a role Chloe will play in our adventure; will she be attached to our hip at all times like Sheva in Resident Evil 5 or Elika in Prince of Persia? Or is she more of a free-running companion that simply follows you and does what she pleases? We have to learn a bit more, but the Nathan/Chloe relationship is gonna be intriguing, no matter what.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is right near the top of our list for most anticipated titles of 2009, and after this preview, it may be sitting pretty in the #1 slot. It’s going to be a drop-dead gorgeous, endlessly entertaining, and wonderfully polished action/adventure game…and yes, you can quote us on this. We’re that confident.

AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I mean...Uncharted was absolutely beautiful. The environment and graphics were a sort of beginning step for the PS3...then came along the big guys...MGS 4, R2, LBP, and KZ 2. A lot of us still have our eyes on KZ2 and we all know it's going to be great. But ever since we got that Uncharted 2 trailer on that one random day people went berserk. "OMG he's back." I personally though...was crying inside since I really wanted to see Jak and Daxter back.

But as the previews and screenshots started rolling in...Oh boy...I'm actually getting excited for this game. You see...it's hard for me to adapt to the new generation currently mainly since I don't have a PS3 or an Xbox 360. I would love to buy the 360 for Gears, and for PS3 I would love to buy MGS 4, LBP, Resistance, Resistance 2, Valkyria Chronicles, Yakuza 3, Disagea 3, Mirror's Edge, Killzone 2, and now really thinking hard about Uncharted. I played the demo of Uncharted at target and actually enjoyed it. The gameplay was extremely smooth. The controls were comfortable. The graphics looked gorgeous even on a 720p screen.

However...the action was and delivery of the game was just ok for me. Sure there were firefights...and stuff. You grabbed on to vines, you leaped from one area to another, you took cover to heal and then try and shoot the bastard in the head. So really the demo didn't convince me to get a PS3 just yet. Mainly because...it just wasn't that fun for me. Now yea...it's just a "DEMO" not the whole game. And I've seen throughout the game they had a bunch of different kind of firefights and etc, but I was still unsure.

Uncharted 2 however...seems awesome. It really seems adventurous, I'm curious about the relationship between Nathan and Chloe, and of course I'm sure the gameplay will be smooth as the 1st one was, the controls comfortable, and...etc.

Let's see if Uncharted 2 can finally sell the PS3 to me...I mean Yakuza 3, and others already have...but could it hit another pressure point??

I think Killzone2 generally will set the bar. Unchartered 2; whilst still unchartered :) will surely impress. My hunch is though that I think Killzone 2 will outsell Unchartered...

Nevertheless, as I did not get the first Unchartered I will probably pick up the second one. It seems sequels are the ones to get because you get the game the way it should have been made the first time around... with a whole lot of improvements... I should have also waited for others such as Dirt 2 and Motorstorm 2... won't make the same mistakes again :)

Q!

I can't wait! The first Uncharted was amazing and so much fun to play. So Amongst Thieves is gonna be out of this world. I must say I'm really impressed with Sony's exclusives. They always rock... okay bar some but 90% of the time they outdo anything else out there.

Drake was PS3's first real cult hero(new one at least), the first game is STILL one of my top five current gen titles(and there on almost every count-though as there's still no mention of any online component I wonder whether ND will get docked at review if there is none again), and the sequael has already knoacked out some fine looking screens for us to gawp at.
Gonna be really good but as most of the gameplay we have had described has been totally single player with only Nathan onscreeen I'm wondering if Chloe could emerge more in an online co-op? Just as long as they don't harm the core SP(a gripe of mine these days) in order to put in fashionable features I'm all for it.

I bet you anything that the bad guys are using Chloe to get to Nate, but still, online coop would be cool even if it is only partially available (i.e. if at some point one character is removed from play during plot, games resume independently on both using remaining character). With all the games out, having competitive online play like capture the flag and so forth pretty much reduces to the samething, so if it's still missing from the sequel, I won't be missing it, but coop would be cool.

i'd be interested in finding out if this will have some sort of co op to it,either online or splitscreen.
Drake in my opinion has surpassed lara's abilities to raid tombs and such.Tomb raider games have become stale & boring :(

Im not doubting Uncharted will look indeed amazing but if all this "we are maxing the PS3 out" is to be believed, I really hope Uncharted gets a 1080p res. Perhaps my expectations are way too high right now, and devels need another two years to squeeze the power out of the PS3. Im wondering how Kojima got MGS4 running beautifully at 1080p, people can say whatever wants but MGS4 is much sharper running at 1080p than at 720p.

I believe MGS4 was upscaled to 1080p,the only true 1080p games in development that i know of are Gran turimo 5 & War devil,both PS3 exclusives....YAY :)

@Lord

Why do you think so? Well if that is true it makes me want, even more, to get native 1080p games.

BTW, Im yet to play Uncharted 1. I saw a gametrailer review and, as with every PS3 exclusive, they tried hard to make it look as bad as possible.

Off-topic: Any idea about a good ps3-compatible place to watch movies and TV online, for free of course? :D

Uncharted has been the game in which I've had the most fun this generation so far.

I really can't wait for U2:AT.

Please Naughty Dog, no coop, but yes to competitive MP.

Nathan is not a fighter, is a treasure hunter, so I don't think that Chloe will be a fighter either.

yea im def. looking forward to this one all the screen shots look amazing, the trailers look even more amazing, and i watched the director interviews that were posted and he strayed away from co-op or mutliplayer, but i was absolutely fine without it in the first and will be fine without it again some games like GOW3 and uncharted 2 dont need co-op or multiplayer to sell or do well. also im really excited about the new hand to hand combat that u can use during play now, and how u can use stealth or run n gun. Games gonna be good!
