Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection Preview
Ahhh, compilations. What better way to revisit the classics than with a disc that contains them all? The larger storage mediums of today have allowed publishers to exploit the compilation set as they're almost guaranteed to bring in profit. There's no planning or research to be done, no game engine to build, and no development process. There's simply a minimal port job required, but the cost of that is peanuts compared to the cost of developing from the ground up. Although, for Sonic's Genesis Collection, Sega spent a few cashews and walnuts to also have the games boast 720p compatibility.
In total, you'll find a collection with over 40 games, so chances are, your favorite Sega Genesis game is in this mix somewhere. This compilation will not only boast original Genesis titles, but also arcade versions of certain games as unlockable content. Moreover, Sega has gone on to include interviews with the original developers of these games, as well. So if you've ever wondered what led to the creation of some of these classics, you'll find out.
On top of that, Sega has done something that most compilations don't feature, and that's enhancing the games to be 720p compatible. While not exactly re-drawing the sprites, like Capcom did with Super Street Fighter II Turbo, the games will still display a smoother picture that's made to fit 720p resolutions. So you won't be getting a stretched and ugly image, don't worry about that.
By now you're probably wondering what this list of games is contained of. Well, to borrow some internet lingo and apply it here, the list of 40 games contains nothing but win. In the mood for some RPGs? You've got Shining Force I & II and Phantasy Start II-IV. How about some side scrolling beat-em-up action? The legendary Streets of Rage series and Golden Ax series are both here for you to experience. Feeling adventurous? You've got pretty much every Sonic the Hedgehog game made available to you (and we believe you'll be able to mix them with Sonic and Knuckles). Take a look below for the complete list of games Sega has disclosed. Do note that it does not include the hidden/unlockable games.

This compilation simply has everything that the die-hard Sega fan will want, and if you don't see something on this list, we've heard a second compilation is also in the making. Every multiplayer compatible game will also feature its original multiplayer options, as well, so feel free to play Sonic 2 and Streets of Rage co-op, or Columns against another friend. Hopefully the next compilation boasts Columns III, as its five player option made for some incredible moments. Oh, and the price for all of this? A meager $30. Look for the compilation to arrive February 10th.
