inFamous 2 Preview
inFamous was a blast. It just was. I freely admitted to being wrong about my early skepticism, as I found myself engrossed in the surprisingly addictive cross between Grand Theft Auto and a superhero action title that exuded attitude and flash; the sensation of power and capability was most appreciated. This is why inFamous 2 remains near the top of my most anticipated list for 2011…despite my fresh reservations, this time concerning the look and style of the new Cole. I’ll get to that in a minute but for now, we should examine our new environment, Sucker Punch’s inclusion of various elements in a nod to Naughty Dog’s Uncharted series, and the return of the crowd-pleasing aspects that made inFamous such a well-loved adventure.
At the start of the sequel, Cole is still living in Empire City but The Beast, that massive monster hell-bent on destroying society, pops up and decides to kick the snot out of Cole. Fans will remember that Kessler predicted the arrival of this foe so it probably shouldn’t come as any surprise, but Cole feels beaten and dejected by his humiliating defeat and resolves to become stronger. Therefore, he heads to New Marais, our new playground for inFamous 2. It’ll remind you of New Orleans and it’s where the First Sons constructed the Ray Sphere, which, if you recall, is the same device that granted Cole his awesome electrical capability. New Marais is a good place to beef up because the entire city is overrun by a new breed of foe; they’ve got mutated arms, grayish skin, and mouths that split in the middle (sort of like those creatures in “Blade II”), and these things pose a formidable challenge to the weakened Cole.
As mentioned, the city boasts a very different look from the standard industrial-like feel of Empire City. You’ll see huge swamp trees lingering on the horizon, for instance, and the overall destructability of the environment has been amped up something fierce: you won’t just shatter the windows of vehicles lining the streets; you’ll pick them up with certain skills and toss them about. Unleashing your growing power on a vulnerable part of particular structures and buildings will cause them to come crashing to the ground and throughout it all, there are legions of freaked-out citizens. In other words, we should be looking at a much more visceral and convincing experience thanks to increased immersion and authenticity, which is awfully appealing to think about. Furthermore, as we’ve heard before, the developers have taken a few hints from Naughty Dog and really worked to polish up the visual presentation. This is why in addition to the standard comic-book like cut-scenes, we’ll also have separate in-game CGI scenes for inFamous 2 that are shaping up nicely.
As for the gameplay, details are a little thin but it seems clear that Sucker Punch isn’t about to annoy inFamous fans by fiddling with a tried-and-true formula. Many of the same powers will return, as will Cole’s speed and nimbleness but on top of that, he’ll have a two-pronged cattle prod that can be used for insane melee attacks. His new “Ultra Moves” prominently feature the tool; simply by pressing Triangle, Cole can unleash a particularly up-close-and-personal assault with the help of his cattle prod. But to add even more flavor and spice to the presentation, the team has increased Cole’s other basic abilities as well. He can glide further (and faster), he can create huge vortexes infused with electricity that suck up anything unfortunate enough to get in its way, and he can even zip along sheer walls by attaching himself to pipes with a cord of electricity. So yeah, bigger and better in just about every possible way…again, with the subjective exception of Cole’s new look.
Sucker Punch has explained Cole’s new appearance and while I understand it, I can’t agree with it. Their description of combining an extreme sports icon with a superhero really doesn’t sit well with me. But provided the gameplay and story is there, I’m sure I’ll get over it, and I have complete faith that we’ll get another completely satisfying product. Other pieces of information we have include the fact that the morality system – choosing between good and bad actions will result in different powers – will be back, but we’re not sure if it will operate in the same fashion. Then there are the new ice-based skills we’ve seen several times in new footage but Sucker Punch hasn’t gone into explicit detail concerning these new additions to Cole’s repertoire. They don’t really need to, though; we know they’ll be there, and they look awesome. Oh, and you may remember those blast shards; the 100% seekers needed to find every last one, and the last few proved intensely annoying to find. Well, these might come back, too.
inFamous 2 is set to release some time next year. The sooner we get a solidified release date, the happier we’ll be.

I'm gonna hang back for the reviews when the game releases, based on the trailer, I'm not feeling the love for this one.

hey i know!! have it an option to change the skin back to the old cole!! i mean from the start of the game no unlocking or anything just right away choose old cole or new cole. that way it doesnt piss off those of us that liked pre-douche cole.
@ Ben and Arnold: can we do a poll of how many people would be influenced by a skin choice like that? just sayin then we could send the results to ND ;)

I for one fully underestimated how awesome inFamous was going to be and nearly missed out on it. I'm not about to back away from the next one. SP has my full attention.

So now they've really gone and Sucker-Punched us with a new Cole Slaw face & Cabbage Patch Kid voice.
I sure hope his hair gel is non-conductive or he's gonna be one hell of a nuclear crispy critter before he even leaves home.
(but regardless of Cole's face rape, I'll still get the game, cause it's just too good a game)

He's got superpowers after all...
The game does look graphically better, the colors are so much more engaging as well.
I liked the grimy/sorrowful look of Infamous1, but I think this new look shows progression. Crap I'm repeating myself again *cough*

I'm not completely whining about his change in appearance. I think he looks pretty hot with his new look. But Zeke... I thought he was already ugly and his new look brought it up to a whole new level. He's kind of a loser as well, but there's always gotta be a sidekick I guess. Anyway, I also noticed that Cole gets a metal forked pole to whack enemies with... Uh... NO. Their melee wasn't at all bad in the first one! At least he didn't lug around a giant forked pole. Honestly! Did he rip it off of a transformer?
So far, the changes they've made have been both frustrating and interesting for me. I can understand if it's been about a year since the first installment ended... But any shorter than that and it just won't make any sense. Then again, I'm all up for originality and inFamous 2 will be no where near it (except for gameplay). So maybe I'm whining more than I need to.
I guess it's comforting to know I'm not the only one kinda ticked about his new look. However, I suppose we'll just have to suck it up and love it, which I know we will regardless. I know SP will make up for it with the good old gameplay we know and love. I trust SP with all these changes and we'll have to wait and see how she handles. inFamous 2, however, will definately be a first day buy for me. I'll still love you no matter what Cole!

As for his new look and whatnot, I don't like it, but I can deal with it, and deal with it I shall. Also, the idea of a new weapon is sick as hell. I want to be able to beat weirdos in all directions with it.
And what's this about a weakened Cole? I want him to start off as the ultimate mass-murderer he was at the end of the first and take it upwards. AND I WANT KESSLER'S TELEPORT DAMNIT.
That is all.
Peace.

Infamous 2's presentation starts, oddly enough, with the game's director, Nate Fox, practically apologizing for its protagonist's new look, which hasn't been particularly well received by fans. "We read the blogs," he says, before reminding us that the game is, "at the midpoint on a two year journey." It's a statement that doesn't actually commit to anything, but we can infer from it that there's a good chance Cole will be getting his appearance retweaked a bit before the game hits.

You made the looks of a character such a big deal...
You've been all waiting for a sequel and once you got it you began complaining, not about the gameplay, nor the powers, etc... You complained about THE LOOKS of a character which doesn't affect the game AT ALL...
It's just a pile of (repeat after me)
p-o-l-y-g-o-n-s...
And finally the only reason why you only hear complaints about his looks is because the rest of us never cared about such things... If the game sucks it certainly won't be because of the character's face... You're simply a very vocal minority...
Grow up kids (and big kids)...

Can't you comply with an artistic decision?
I mean they kinda did everything you wanted from the sequel...
They made a new city (which is good), added new powers, kept the same gameplay so what's the big deal???
Why can't you accept a change that they themselves wanted to do???
It's a video game not a fashion show!
By the way i find it strange that the avatar you chose looks more like the new Cole (whom you described as "lame")...
I'm just sayin'...
:)
P.S. I know i sound harsh and i'm sorry... But i'm not gonna change my comment... It's just how i feel about this whole situation... :P

By ur logic we all should've just taken it with our backs turned with a smile on our face when George Lucas decided to "update" star wars and then have the brilliance to try and say they were the only versions which will exist from now on.
I respect Sucker Punch, they are a great developer, that doesn't mean I have to brainlessly accept what they are doing to Cole. I am not impressed, and will not be buying it with what they've done. I'm not going to just be on here talking about it, I'm just going to not buy it. Maybe u should respect that some of us hold the integrity of our icons and characters of what has been before in work higher than the marketability of a product.

That's not so smart if you liked the original (and respect the company like you claimed)... And i bet that many people who dislike the new Cole (and even hate me about my comments) will agree with me on this one...
I hate changes like the ones SE did (gameplay, linearity etc)...
But come on man... It's just polygons...
There are way more serious things worth arguing about in the game industry than looks!!!
Stop acting so "betrayed"...

Changes were something like what capcom did to dino crisis 3! Now those are some ***** up changes! If you don't support them that's all you so when they go multiplatform and take the series to different directions not just changing a character. Then we know who to blame!

I'm not trying to be a hypocrite, I will admit that I do not like the changes much myself. But, I'm coming to terms that it shouldn't be that big of a deal to worry about if they've improved him. I understand that some people's minds can't be changed if they set it on something, but everyone should try to be open-minded about his change in looks. At least until we all see how the game plays out. Then, bash SP or Cole or whatever for his change in appearance. But, until then, I believe we have hardly any room to talk.
One last thing, just because you accept how Cole looks, or buy the game, does not mean you are "brainlessly accepting what they are doing to Cole." It only means that you completely trust a developer with their character and that you're open to new ideas, however seemingly drastic they may be. No one ever got anywhere sticking with the "same old, same old."
(I'm not here to offend or start anything, I'm only stating my views in this.)

At any rate, ultimately the customer should have a say in the massacre of a favorite character. Did people enjoy George Clooney's Batman? No, so he is out. It's a bad move, I base that solely on the fact that MOST people talking about it don't like the move. As such, we are free to talk about it and not just follow blindly. They aren't just polygons once the character is established.
Maybe if enough people complain we can help make a change at this date in development and save SP from themselves, who knows.

@WroldEndsWithMe: I'm sorry to say that they're still polygons but with a voice...
But like you said, who knows?
I could be horribly wrong about justifying SP (or gloriously right)... It's up to (as you said) the customers....
The avatar thing was just a lame remark of mine (cause if we compare you and the two Coles you're closer to the new one)... I like the sword btw...
Now back to my ranting...
Apparently my comments about looks were very harmful to some of you...
And that's exacly my point... They shouldn't be...
I get it, you liked the old Cole and that's fine (seriously)...
But some of you are taking it to extreme levels...
Change isn't always a bad thing (and changes of this magnitude should be insignificant)...
And maybe, just maybe, SP will make the moral choices affect your appearance as well (just like so many games before infamous)...
So if you're evil you can have your beloved antihero back...
And if you're good you'll have, well... Nathan Drake...
Anyways...
I'm just speculating about the last part... But some of you hate the new character so much (just by one trailer) that you ended up hating the entire game...
That's never good... And i hope that none of you turns down the game only because of Cole's (I REPEAT) looks!

Also the only change between good and evil was everything else, including the lightning color, but not Cole himself (it's funny that i used the word "only" in the beginning of this sentence)... Which was cool but maybe this time his face and hairstyle will change as well...
Again... I'm just speculating...
Anyways... As far as i'm concerned i got it out of my system, so i doubt i'll speak about this subject again in the near future... :P

Unless they show why this new Cole has tattoos on his forearms, "ninja" rods, and some tacky "flag" design on his pant leg, it's lame. Fun is fun though so if this game's play gets good reviews I'm in.

His pants design is just a pair of jeans, try to get over it.
His tuning fork is made of metal, a perfect conduit for electricity, which should let him deal with adversaries easier, whats not to understand about that? Lets face it, his hand to hand combat was a joke on the first game, why not try to make it better?

Blast shards? More please! Although it almost made me pull my hair out I got all of them, and had great fun doing it. Gave me an excuse to just run around and enjoy the vastness of the first game. The 'fork' could be very interesting.
As for the story, a few questions come to mind. Are we going to see Alden again, where's Sasha (God I hope she's back, that fight with her was just too fun), did Zeke and Cole smooth things over...so many questions can't wait for this to come out.
