If the uninitiated glance at a few screenshots, they might think DUST 514 is just another sci-fi shooter. But for those who follow the news and might even be familiar with EVE Online, labeling CCP Games’ new production as a simple shooter is a dire insult. It’s an RPG or perhaps more specifically, an MMORPG, and it will actually incorporate some of the events that have occurred in EVE Online. That’s some cross-platform goodness right there, right? What we have in DUST 514 is a colossal world, loaded with people and things to do, and ideally, you’ll never get tired of the adventure.

The production had a great showing at GamesCom this year, and many PlayStation 3 owners are anxiously awaiting this title, which will not require a monthly subscription, by the way. All you need is a PSN account to partake. And when you jump online, you will assume the role of a mercenary, who is actually an employee of one of the EVE Online player-created corporations. Basically, it’s a lot like a normal military structure: the high-and-mighty generals get to issue commands while the lowly soldiers are forced to execute in extreme conditions. Hope we didn’t offend anybody there…but the point is made.

As is the case with most games of this nature, you can’t do everything alone. There is a ton of action, despite the RPG label, and in order to deal with the onslaught, you’ll have to team up. It’s not always exactly like an MMO in that an unlimited number of people can traverse the same area at once (despite the fact that your actions will influence the entire world); 32 players are allowed in an objective-driven Skirmish, for instance. Vehicles add to the depth and we’ll be interested to see how the controls function for the FPS and driving elements. Oh, and orbital strikes sound awesome: DUST 514 player asks EVE Online player to send down a planet blast.

You will be fighting to earn territory but this may actually impact innocent civilians, and it doesn’t have to be negative. For example, while some people are losing power and resources, other people may be raking in the money thanks to amped-up trade and commerce. However, as a mercenary, you don’t really take sides; you just go for the job that pays the best. The more money you earn, the better the upgrades will be, and you can augment yourself and/or purchase new items ad weapons. As you might expect, there will be a whole lot of options and customization involved. And at the end of the day, this is a constantly expanding universe.

Be prepared to leap into an immersive sci-fi world when DUST 514 drops next year.

This looks cool but I'm not into MMO games so it's a no go on this end.

This game really confuses me (in a good way), it just seems like there is a ton going on. I love that the PS3 continues to get exclusive games like this that push the boundaries of what we think a console can do.

The fact it'll also interact in some way with the Vita just makes it more interesting too! I hope this game does well, it really looks interesting. That coming from someone who doesn't play a lot of FPS games.

Ya, plus the fact that it's linked to Eve online. I'm just worried there might be too much going on here but I'm certainly going to try it out for myself.

Dust sounds great... I will definitely be interested to see how this title pans out :) Maybe an amazingly huge world to explore... it is the Skyrim of Sci-Fi!

If this lives up to the promise, it will be like someone called down a kinetic strike from orbit on our heads.

lol @ the commercial in that video for a free xbox 360. They will do anything to make it seem like they've sold the most systems.

Oh and Dust looks cool, big time shoota, future of gaming and all that... I'll look into it when it comes out.

@Qubex: Dude, the kz3 engine (or more precise, the hardware using that engine) could *never* handle the size of this game. There is a reason why all the maps in kz3 are as small as they are. :)

You know what's worse than that World?

The fact the US and UK eat it up.

It's funny because I didn't expect it there and they give those things away like candy, and the Kinect too. It makes more sense to have a Tv and PS3 bundle than a computer/360 bundle

sitting back and watching this.
could be a really good game, but i fear its gonna be another one of those jack of all trades master of none kind of games.
just seems like the developers are biting off more then they can chew.

This game has uniqueness written all over it. I just hope a good game will materialize from all this theoretical awesomeness.

If so, this could be the giant bomb of 2012...! Furthermore this could even turn out to be *the* exclusive title on the PS3 that creates some major attention outside the ps3 world. Seriously. It's that unique.

Dust 514 will in all likelihood be one of those end all games for me.

If it does everything MAG did, but on a bigger better scale, I am going to be one happy man!

Yeah! And I just love the sheer scale of this thing. The ambition, the magnitude. The complexity of pulling in not only other platforms but entirely different games, it's just... So unique. There's no game like this out there. And such a game is a PS3 exclusive? Oh the joy!

looks awesome!!! i hope it does what mag did in that it just gets better with time. Since Eve is already established as a huge game it'll be interesting to see how much of that world is accessible in Dust. Can't wait to see how all this ends up.
