The Club Preview
There is one thing that needs to be stated right off the bat, and it's that Bizarre Creations isn't going third party. Rather, contrary to a lot of confused thought, they are not a wholly owned by Microsoft. That said, their entry into next-generation action games doesn't make this a debut in the genre for them. Believe it or not, their very first game 17 years ago also featured a premise that somewhat resembled the one found in The Club - that game was called The Killing Game Show. The Club is unlike other action games we've seen to date, in fact, it's more akin to movies like The Running Man or games like Twisted Metal.
The Club revolves around an underground blood-sport that is ran by a group of unknown elites, all of which who are quite wealthy and use their wealth to bet on or against participants. The game will feature a total of eight trained killers, all of which with their own unique characteristics, gameplay styles, motivations, and traits. You'll be able to select between five, game modes such as the story mode, time attack, survivor, siege and Run the Gauntlet. When you go online, you'll have nine gameplay modes to choose from and you'll be able to square off against 15 other gamers, for a total of 16 players online. 4-player split-screen will also be an option, so if you've got friends and a big TV, you'll likely make use of this.
Sega is touting all eight environments to be based on a real-world locations, and all of the stages will be quite destructible. Likewise, you can use the destruction and manipulation of objects from the environments to your advantage, as well. Firefights will be both open range and close quarter, and beyond shooting it out mindlessly, you'll be rewarded points. The highest score per game will not always be the one with the most kills, but the one who is the fastest, most efficient and accurate. Points can then be used for unlocking weapons, characters and maps.
As far as weaponry is concerned, you'll have 17 'high-powered' guns to choose from, all of which that can be customized to your liking. Snipers, automatics, high caliber pistols, sub-machine guns, mounted turrets and a plethora of others will all be available for your selection. Lastly, with eight characters in the game, that clearly means that there'll be eight different stories to tell, all of which have their own unique twists. Really reminds us of Twisted Metal.
The Club looks pretty darn awesome, at this point. Characters are loaded with details, and Bizzare is making use of some very nice texture work. Above that, the environments seem to feature a very large scale, so there's certainly quite a lot of space to utilize in many instances. The images and video already demonstrate the copious amounts of fireworks we'll get to see, in particular: some pretty amazing explosions. And on top of featuring grand these stages, Bizarre is topping off every wall and object with splendid texture detail that makes the image pop just right. Because this is a fast-paced third-person shooter, the only thing left to see is the framerate and if Bizarre can nail that down, The Club should be golden.
Look for The Club to hit store shelves on October 2nd, 2007. By the looks of it, this seems to be one game that you'll want to keep your eye on. So stay posted for more info as it comes to us.
