Killzone 2 Review
You know, this lead up to the review almost makes the day feel like some mega console launch. The amount of hype and hysteria surrounding Killzone 2 is epic, especially considering that it's a sequel to a rather poor PlayStation 2 shooter. Having debuted with an ultra-stylized and flashy render at E3 in 2005, Killzone 2 has finally reached the end of its development cycle and here we are, fortunate enough to be playing the final product for the past month now. I've let the whole experience sink in, and now it's time for me to tell you why this may be the best first-person shooter in a long, long time.
I applaud Guerrilla for building an exhilarating single-player experience that'll go unrivaled for many years. You see, unlike other FPS games, Killzone 2 doesn't start off with a boring training mode that constantly interrupts the gameplay to inform you of a new tip. Instead, after a two-minute gameplay intro sequence, a cut-scene will lead you right into the heart of the action and you'll definitely feel the fright and hectic gameplay from the get-go. What's amazing about Killzone 2's gameplay is just how superbly well the game manages to envelope you into its surrounding.
You're well aware that this is a videogame, but at times, the tension and excitement can make you forget. You'll play Killzone 2 slightly more alert than any other shooter, and that could also be a testament to the game's fantastic A.I., which is always working together and always keeping their eyes peeled for any surprise attacks. Never before have I played a shooter that made you feel so close to the environment and conveyed that sense of panic during gameplay; Call of Duty 4 is close, but Killzone 2 is still better.
Where as some games boast A.I. that's mindless and follows a path, or other games have A.I. that's just obscenely difficult to the point of being annoying, Killzone 2 strikes that perfect balance and even manages to avoid one crippling flaw: constant re-spawning. Once you've dealt with your enemies, you can be rest assured that they won't be coming back anymore, and I commend Killzone 2 for that.
How Killzone 2 engages the gamer seems to be unlike any other FPS game I've ever played. There is a solid connection between the gamer, the character, and the environment that you're in. The amount of excitement all around you really cranks up the feedback and the experience, and I can't stress that facet enough - the game is simply intense. To further add to this whole feeling of immersion is how your enemies react to the bullets as they pierce through them with their bodies recoiling to every bullet connected. You've no doubt seen the footage of a Helghan troop getting shot up as his body is rained on with lead, and while it's pretty to watch on your computer monitor, it's even better to witness in person on your TV. With hundreds of death animations, that kind of attention to detail really makes the shooting feel rewarding, as every bullet fired just feels extremely satisfying.
And that's another important aspect of the game that lends itself to that immersion factor, the feel of every shot is superb. One thing I must mention is something that may shock some of you...but when I played Killzone 2 at E3 this past July, I wasn't terribly crazy about it. The shooting had far too much recoil, making it hard to steady the reticule and mow down enemies. So I was extremely happy to see that this had been taken care of, and the controls were tightened considerably - definitely a big kudos to Guerrilla for listening.
Progression through each stage is fairly linear, but combat can be approached in a variety of directions. For example, you are free to sneak around the environment in order to gain some leverage on your enemies. But be careful, like I said, the A.I. isn't stupid as they often know of exploits in the environment, and can cut you off with a surprise attack. So if you'd like to wander off and attack your opponents from the side, you may encounter some resistance on your way to and through a path. You'll combat that resistance in a variety of ways; when you're out of ammo your knife will be your melee weapon, you can also strike enemies with your gun, and of course you'll have a reserve of grenades to throw. The best method is to play it smart and play it cool, running and gunning will result in a sure death, so use the game's cover mechanic to shield yourself from danger, and peak out every now and then to pick off your enemies - headshots are most rewarding here.
Difficulty levels range from easy (Recruit), to hard (Veteran), with normal (Trooper) being the perfect middle-ground. Of course, you can expect additional difficulties to pop-up once you complete the game, but my playthroughs are based entirely on the normal setting, though I did give the hard setting a try too. On normal the game provides a proper challenge, with A.I. that I've already mentioned to boast a perfect balance. You'll still find yourself getting killed occasionally with the standard difficulty mode, but if you're looking for an even bigger challenge, playing on Veteran will give it to you.
Between the beta and the online matches that Sony has setup for us, I've also had a chance to experience the multiplayer offerings numerous times, and while it may not be the 60-player mayhem of Resistance 2's setup, the 32-player events we took part in were still more than enough to have an awesome time with. Multiplayer is definitely going to be Killzone 2's lasting point, as the maps were great and the matches were all a blast. With up to 32 players on the field, things got really chaotic, and I wouldn't have had it any other way. Multiplayer modes include, Assassination, Search & Destroy, Bodycount, Search & Retrieve, and Capture & Hold - all of which are fairly self-explanatory. As far as vehicles, those will be made present as free downloadable content soon after the game's release. Shame about the lack of a co-op experience though, maybe that'll appear as DLC, as well? But a big plus for at least giving us bots to fight against.
Moving on, Sony has always promised that Killzone 2 would be a visual tour de force, and seeing as how it's got one absurdly controversial trailer to live up to, the gaming public has kept expectations extremely high. I'm happy to report that visual fidelity of Killzone 2 lives up to what Sony first showed us. Granted it's not a carbon copy as far as polish and quality goes, but there are a number of things that the game does better than that aforementioned debut trailer. For example, the colors are now more varied, and you can notice this if you compare the original trailer to the actual cut-scene of the game side-by-side. Additionally, old builds and screenshots of the game from 2007 reveal a much more monotone environment, where as the final game's environments not only boast a more varied color palette, but also much better textures. Furthermore, character detail has also been revamped in some cases, when compared to those older in-game trailers.
The characters, much like the environments, have also been given a shot of life, with eyes that don't make them look like zombies, textures that are sharper, and overall detail that makes Killzone 2 one of the best looking games around. Despite the amount of action that goes on the screen, the game runs extremely well, with little to no slow-down present. And despite how massive and detailed the environments are, the graphics still aren't plagued with things like pop-up or aliasing, as the game's pristine picture clarity is a sight to see. Lastly, animation, lighting, and other bits of attention to detail really round out a visual package that is nothing short of jaw-dropping.
The audio is also extremely powerful, with lots of battlefield dialogue and banter. The Helghast sound hauntingly menacing as they taunt you, and the sound effects of the battle all around you rips through the speakers with force. There is quite a bit of voice acting, and it helps that it is also solid, but it's really not what you'll be concentrating on when listening to this game in action. You've seen me say this numerous times, but if you've got a home theater setup, you absolutely must experience the game on it. I can't think of any other way it should be played - a game with such high technical caliber was designed to be played on only the best audio and visual hardware. This one really makes a nice 'boom' sound.
Killzone 2 lives up to every one of its promises, and considering the bar it set for itself in 2005, that's a lot of promises to live up to. Ultimately, we have a game that strikes the perfect balance between a single-player and multiplayer experience. Where almost all current FPS games boast a multiplayer component that is far and away better and more satisfying than the single-player experience, Killzone 2 boasts a single-player campaign that is every bit as much fun as the multiplayer - and that is truly a rarity. I've had the pleasure of going through the first six stages of the preview build last December, and then replaying the entire game on this review build. And even though I've experienced half of the game twice, it still felt every bit as exciting the second time around, as it did the first. I also applaud Guerrilla for building a campaign that doesn't last only a few hours, but rather close to 10 hours in total. Yes, the hype is real, Killzone 2 is that damn good, consider it the first big game of the year contender for 2009.

From videoGamer:
"Sev's not fast, and he's no super soldier. He can't jump 20 feet in the air, like Master Chief, or roadie run as if a speeding bullet, like Marcus Fenix" <---WTF is a xbox fan reviewing a PS3 game? (9/10)
But this one is my favorite so far
From Kikizo:
"Locking to cover with a shoulder button (a mechanic exclusive to single player) feels a little contrived at first - first-person shooters have done just fine without letting the player glue himself to walls, so why start now? - but is a pleasantly unrealistic blessing once the Helghast bust out bigger firearms" <--- WTF? the cover system is a bad thing? how is to cover UNREALISTIC in a firefight? Prob I need to re read this again (9/10).
Many of these reviewers are really looking hard for flaws in KZ2 just to justify a non 10/10 score.
If KZ2 is renamed Halo: KillZone 2, a 10/10 is granted for sure.

Killzone 2 beats the ever-loving crap out of any Halo. It's like comparing FPSs across generations the gap is so big. And bear in mind that I VERY much enjoyed all three Halos. I've got them all sitting right behind me in my collection.

But it needs more then a good gameplay in my eyes. It needs a great online service and a great storyline. And to be active it needs the sales your hoping for.
Ill still love Halo without hating or dogging KillZone. You guys like what you like. And I will like what I like.

But almost 5/10 reviewers said that its not as groundbreaking and revolutionary as everyone thought. Still all i see is 9.3+ scores from it

This is a completely serious question not intended to put down anything. That being said, what are all these great games coming this year for the 360 barring the two Halo games which I personally am not that enthusiastic about seeing as how I don't like Halo that much.
I honestly want to know what all these games are and please keep it exclusive seeing as how I can get RE5 on PS3 I don't see that as being a fair thing to use. (just using RE5 as an example)

The only ones I care about are the new Halos and the new GTA episodes. I plan to pick up a couple others like Alan Wake but dont really care much for others.
You know whats funny. You guys say the same Shyt every year about the 360 games. But they keep coming and coming. Keep selling millions and millions. Its like because they don't announce everything at once they dont have nothing. Maybe they would rather talk about em when they come and not when they are coming in over a year (GOW3). Now let me ask you this. What good games are coming out THIS year for PS3?
I haven't turned on the Xbox in a couple days. And when I do its to talk shit to friends and kick their asses on live. I dont need alot of games. But im getting the best from the titles I do love this year. My needs will be MORE then met.
PS3 guys saying xbox has no games...this is funny.

And yes I could list a ton of new games if you want me to? Because I guess thats what its about now.

CVG managed to give KZ2 8.7/10, incredible, but somehow I was expecting it
Here are the reasons:
No co-op
Samey enemies
Rarely need to change guns
CVG people beyond to sound like xbots IMO, as Ben once said, are trying to get a lot of hits.
Now expecting a 9.5/10 score for the incredible Halo Wars and a 10/10 for ODST :D . Sorry Josh but I needed to say it.

Are we going to se new FPS games being directly compared to Killzone 2 now or are they going to stick to saying things like "puts Gears 2 to shame" or "Halo 3 was amazing until....."?
I hope the PS3 starts getting the media attention it deserves but it looks like M$ had one hell of a good idea throwing the system out the door a year too early and their PR department is top notch. I wonder how these people sleep at night.... No I don't I know they all sleep on mattresses stuffed with 100 dollar bills and pillows of gold weaved with silk.
Had to edit this in:
Total Video Games gave KZ2 a 8/10 and one of the complaints was "Cliff-hanger ending."
Is it not a good thing that the ending leaves you wanting more? Do they think GG decided oh hell let's end it on a cliff hanger and never follow up? Hell, it just sets up a third game and is that bad? Did Halo 2 garner such a low score for its ending?
Oh well.

All I'm gonna say on that is its due to the final boss having the ability to teleport and one-hit-kills. I hear the end boss is ridiculously hard, to the point of aggrevation and annoyance and it hinders the game.
I'm still really happy with everything else I hear about the game. I'll look forward to owning you bastards online (I get the game 1 day before publice release haha!)

The only people really comparing this game to Gears or Halo is...yep. The Sony guys. I just read tons of reviews saying its in the same genre. But offers nothing groundbreaking.
To few know about it and the PS3 is to high priced for many who would want a look.
Ill get raw a second. I will be AMAZED. If this game gets 1/4 the money or sales Halo alone has garnered for Microsoft. Dont believe me?

I don't think anyone expects KZ2 to be the second coming in sales for Sony, that's Gran Turismo's and God of War's job. But the potential for a staggering financial success is very much there, as well as the potential to move a bunch more consoles.

Truly Let me get "Raw" with you.
What did Halo 3 bring new to the table(That its predacesers didn't)?
What did Call of Duty 4 bring new to the table that was groundbreaking?
.................Absolutely nothing, you know what the did do, they perfected how FPS should be played ,and thats what KillZone 2 has done and up'ed the bar that CoD:MW set. Be a gamer and apreciate this game for the hell its gone through by the Media and doubters ,but not only passed but also exceededs what people though was possible in graphics on a consule and depth, i'm done.
(This was not to call you out I was just giving my opinion why it is groundbreaking)

Halo is already an established franchise. After this game drops and the masses see its awesomeness, what do you think will happen to KZ3? A cult following will grow with every subsequent release of a new Killzone title, Just like Halo.
I think initially, the game WON'T see as much as Halo, but after everyone realized how much more of a QUALITY experience KZ is, Killzone will rise beyond the Halo Franchise.
Don't believe me? Watch...(numbnuts)

I think arnold hit the nail on the head, lets face it josh, the reason why halo 2 and halo 3 sold so well is because of 1st game.
This site really disliked the first killzone game, look it up in the review section. I think i will trust arnolds review and go by my personal experience hands on with the beta.
No offense but you tend to come off as a hater at times

I thought Halo 2 was better then one. It had dual weld and showed the fight from both Master Chief and Arbiter.
I thought Halo 3 was amazing in the way it varied in surroundings and offering even more weapons and abilities.
I understand people can have their opinions. But opinions are like ... and everyone has one. I think the Halo franchise is great. It has become a gaming phenomenon and has earned more then 100million in revenue. I just cant stand people who dont respect great titles. Its like just because its good and has a huge following you always have them dbags who are like "that game sucks" instead of maturely stating "I can see why you like it, but its not for me."
I gave props to MGS. I think its one of the best games I ever played. But im just asking what KillZone is bringing to the table that Gears or Halo hasn't?

I dont see a problem with a out there ending. It just makes you look forward to the next title.
I played both and I think Halo 1 was more the same with each mission then the second. The second had different characters added and different environments besides Halo.

"I thought Halo 2 was better then one. It had dual weld and showed the fight from both Master Chief and Arbiter.
I thought Halo 3 was amazing in the way it varied in surroundings and offering even more weapons and abilities."
...yea....a change in enviroment and weapons and an improved storyline, ISNT THAT THE ISH SEQUELS ARE MADE FOR?!?!?
Its the way you present Halo 3 like it did sooo much man.
Really your comments tend to not only demean any PS3 exclusive but also berate the system because of price (Which it is worth). The whole "I like MGS, and give it respect" thing I believe is a front from you to keep yourself one the good side of Arnold's and Bens fence too keep from getting booted from this community of PS gamers, Im just going to stop posting to your remarks from now on because truly I WILL BECOME BIASED and turn in to a fanboy if i keep it up cause it gets to even the best of us at times.

my honest opinion.....
Havent played KZ2 or H-2, but....
After I just finished playing KZ1 on my PS2 last night, I truly wanted it to keep going & going.
So after how much you keep on & on & on putting Halo up on a pedestal, I figured I'd go pop in my Halo CE on my original Xbox.
But after 10 minutes of play, I couldn't take it any more & relegated it back to it's shelf space where it will remain forever. It felt like I was playing an partially animated(the alien creatures) game that was being sold to adults. If I wasn't a collector, I would've traded it in, or sold it.)Thank goodness I only paid $3 for it.
Now mind you, I haven't seen H2 or 3, so I don't know if there's much difference, but if they're just "more of the same", I'll only buy them when they're finally tossed in the used games bargain bin later on, & only to complete my collection.
Btw, saw the trailers or H-Wars & the same go' for it too, since I don't like strategy games.
Haven't heard or seen anything on OSDT(or whatever the letters are), so won't even attempt to
form an opinion on that one yet.
Anyways, you'll have to excuse me, cause I'm gonna back to playing KZ1 once again, this time on the next difficulty setting.

call of duty 4 sold me on the fps games and killzone 2 looks to do even more. i love the idea of bots. the last game i played with bots was red faction 2. my bro and i sat there all the time and leveled up our bots for hours. fun fun fun. i might pop that in again actually.

But from what I read, it doesnt bring anything new to gaming but does everything brilliantly.
For me that doesnt sound too bad as I have not played too many FPS straight through (Goldeneye and RFOM being the two exceptions) so hopefully this will keep me interested for a while.

Btw, Arnold, how is the checkpoint spacing - I'm still disappointed by current-gen games that insist on unskippable cutscenes and place checkpoints just before them, so you end up seeing the same cutscene again and again if the skirmish that follows it is a bit on the tough side(*cough* Legendary *cough*)

Now, back to work for the next 3 weeks! Maybe some Sackboy to ease the stress.
My plan is to grab KZ2 the moment it drops and play it's Campaign + MP every spare hour until RE5 comes to take over my life.

Josh, I'll make this simple: unless someone specifically asks you something about the Xbox 360 or one of its games, you are no longer allowed to keep bringing up the subject IN EVERY SINGLE TOPIC YOU POST IN. I've looked very closely at the past few weeks, and you just can't stop.
I'm issuing a temporary ban the next time it happens. I've concluded you only post here to defend your favorite system against attacks and if you want to do that and can't manage to stay on topic (which you can never do, apparently), then we don't need you.

...but a 9.6?

THATS ALOT OF XBOXES ;p
halo is the best of the three,halo2 great,halo3 was a let down much like gta4(even though they both sold 8 bjillion copies each)
i don't know when halo became the 'shooter to end all shooters'but it was firmly put in its place by half life 2 and every shooter since HL2 that i've PLAYED,all have 2 line up,get on their knee's and suck CRYSIS's C**K.
That FPS game is the one to beat, and hopefully killzone 2 can knock it off its perch!!!
So no more halo this or halo that,i'm forking sick of hearing about it.

As far as the GTAIV comparison...well, I didn't review that. If it were up to me, the game would've scored far, far less. I didn't think much of GTAIV, if anyone cares. Yes, I did complete 3/4 of the game, but did it wow me? Eh. I think it's a really good game, but not as great as others make it to be - the whole cartoon look needs to go and the game engines have to stop being so sloppy.

cant call it a halo killer though cuz they are two very very different games besides genre i guess [sci-fi]
And i know people will be mad at this but i will warn some of you that a lot of people will be disappointed. for starters this game is overhyped and many people are expecting the most godlike thing ever. Second, it just wont be some people's cup of tea. Not trying to start fights, just sayin some truth. I love the game though and will be a first day buy for me.
When i first played it i thought the graphics looked like shit. Thats just how good they look. lol theyre amazing.
I already am highest rank in the multiplayer for KZ2 i wish they will keep me that when game comes but i doubt it.

Quotes like that are why I can never finish your reviews Arnie. Just because the game didn't sell well and was sweeped under the Halo hype didn't mean it was a poor PS2 shooter. Yes I understand reviews are mostly opinion based yet I couldn't help but point out how that above quote pretty much somes up what every other major publication wrote on the game when it first came out. Did you even play Killzone 1? Although I'd love to tear apart what you wrote abut GTA IV in th above comments this is a Killzone 2 posting and what you wrote was entirely opinion based so I have no worries retaining what I was about to write.

Arnold I agree with most of what you stated in the review. Though I will test out the audio of this game on the 27th. But the Graphic score is not what I expected. This game made a comparison run against the top graphic PC game that is Crysis, no other console game has done that. I'm sorry Arnold, but no soup for you.

yeah. im stuck with KB+M for FPS.
i really cant play FPS using gamepad. last time i played BFBC, i throw my gamepad to wall.
thankgod its not broken.
on the otherhand, my pc already too slow to play games at stable FPS.
and console (ps3, x360) get more and more FPS.
i really should train my fingers for playing FPS on gamepad.

2 new links about Killzone 2 for you guys to laugh at ;)

1st link: 95% of the commenters on there sounded like morons! I just couldn't take them seriously.
2nd link: I don't really have a problem but it's comparing Killzone 2 to Batman: Dark Asylum, which I'd never see coming(?).
And William Usher is ALWAYS negative about PS3 exclusives in some way.

It's ironic how PS3 fanboys talk crap about 360 having only great quality shooters on the system, now PS3 has one little shooter with no co-op to help save their dying console and now they think it's the greatest thing in the world.
Well this game won't save your system. Little big planet couldn't, MGS4 couldn't, Socom was dead on arrival.
So now you're relying on a game that has basically copied everything COD has done. Very original.
360 wins again.

* Aggressively average campaign
* No co-op mode
* Slightly mushy controls
They gave it a full ~5-minute review, split into 2 parts...Morgan covering Campaign mode; Adam covering Online Multiplayer mode.
"One of the best-looking next gen games PERIOD"...but, "We'd gladly trade some of the flashy graphics for quicker controls."

Gears 1 - Gear 1.5
Blue Hue - Brown-Orange Hue
4 layer tex -"Tighter" 4 Layer Textures.
Because of this tighter textures, the GPU in X360 has a difficult time processing. So the game runs alot slower. Test it yourself. Pop in Gears 1.5 in 1st and play it for an hour. Then pop in Gears 1 you'll know what im talking about. There is a huge process speed difference. 1.5 even takes longer for the textures to load. Oh when I say play it, I mean play the multiplayer. All online multiplayer games use alot of the processor power. Trust me I had such high hopes on gears 1.5 and let down in so many ways.

Your just being facetious; Your arguments hold little water, but YET you continue with your rancid comments. Your, " I am not saying Killzone 2 sucks, but I am doubtful weather it is going surpass Halo 3" comments contradict your [sometimes] inane actions. You act like a fanboy but claim that you have nothing against the ps3 or it's fans. I am not saying that you are a fanboy, but sometimes you act like it. It's like your a teenage female on her period. Sometimes you ACTUALLY conduce to the community, but sometimes, you go on a rampage causing anarchy.

Halo is a fun game, but has always felt kind of "fantastic" to me, which fits its futuristic scenario, but makes it less than authentic in feel. COD 4 is amazing, but at heart a standard fps. Just a bloody amazing one. Half Life is a brilliant mix of puzzling, shooting and humour, but never REALLY feels like you are fighting a way, just a series of skirmishes against very good AI.
No, Killzone 2 really raises the bar on immersion and gameplay opportunities. I have watched a number of people who've posted videos of playing the demo on youtube, and each person plays this short demo in a different way. Personally I like to take my time, staking out a position and using cover and environmental objects (particularly flammable ones) to launch surprise attacks. But a more offensive approach works just as well, only differently. Those Helghast respond in an amazing variety of ways depending on how you fight them.
Oh well, going on much too long now. Personally, I think in a 6 months time or so when the next fps hits, people WILL be comparing retrospectively to Killzone 2, saying, "why is this game not as immersive as KZ2, why is the AI not as creative, why are the graphics not as incredible, why does it just not feel as real...?"
We'll see.

I get incredibly surprised remarks from my friends when I tell them that I prefer the visuals from Halo 3 to the ones from Gears of War 2, which beats it in all the quantifiable areas (resolution, NURBs, framerate, etc.). I love the aesthetic of the vehicles in Halo 3, and think that everything in it just has a better look. Skyboxes are another thing I usually look at. The skyboxes from TES IV: Oblivion are gorgeous.
My question is, how is the art in Killzone 2?

Partly because the markets flooded with FPS and they were never my fav genre to begin with but even still, I'm playing it in 720p and the graphics just don't seem over and above a bunch of other what's already been done. The setting looks like another industrial wasteland that has been done 1000 times before. The tiny bits I've seen of the other main marines make them sound like the same dumbass macho marines that have been done a 1000 times before, just like gears. Where the hell is all the hype coming from? I mean its obviously a better exclusive than Haze but thats not saying much.
And one last thing, those landing craft have bugged me from the start, much like the mooing mechs from MGS4, as being an incredibly retarded design. It's like they're TRYING to make sure they get killed before they even reach the surface.
