Many action games are now aiming at an all new formula, one that was popularized by games like Devil May Cry and God of War. One such game is THQ's all new Darksiders, a story about War, one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. As of late, the hype around Darksiders began to build and it looked like THQ had a bonafide hit on their hands...or at least a title that's garnering quite a bit of attention, enough to likely succeed and sell well. With games like Bayonetta out, and Dante's Inferno and God of War III due to arrive very soon, how well does THQ's ambitious title stack up?

Well, don't stack this up against games like God of War III, that's on a whole other level. But as a whole, Darksiders is a decent beat 'em up game with some pretty good controls, which are extremely crucial in a game like this. The story is also engrossing, as it deals with War being blamed for bringing on the Final Battle, leading to the destruction of the Earth and it's people. Without getting into the thick of things, he testifies before the Charred Council, stating that he had answered the call of the seventh broken seal and sprung into action under the assumption that the Final Battle between Heaven, Hell, and Man was underway. It wasn't, and because War was the only Horseman to engage in battle, he is pinned for the atrocity. War pleads with the council to allow him to clear his name and is sent back to Earth stripped of all his powers and shackled to The Watcher, a keeper who will kill War if he shows any sign of disobedience. It's been 100 years since War entered the premature battle, and all of man kind has been eradicated, so your enemies are demons and the undead.

You spring into action with your giant sword, the Chaoseater, in hand. Different colored souls from the enemies you defeat will act as your health source, magic source, and upgrade source. Of course, just as you'd expect, even though War loses all of his powers, he will eventually regain them all as you progress through the game. Just like every other game in this genre, there is a straightforward upgrade system you'll use. You'll gain a number of different magic abilities, moves/attacks, as well as weapons, including a gun called Mercy. Eventually, you'll also be able to strap on your red horse Ruin, and ride around when you're in the open world.

Level design, is not this game's strong suit. Your locations are often bland and drab, both to play and look at. This, in turn, makes it a little difficult to really immerse yourself into the world, because while the story is interesting, the world isn't. On the other hand, you shouldn't have too many problems getting around the game, as controls are straightforward and easy to get adjusted to. My one complaint, though, is that perhaps the action isn't nearly as over-the-top as it could've been. Sometimes controlling War feels a bit...heavy. Where as games like Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, God of War, and even Ninja Gaiden are light on their feet, Darksiders isn't.

But Darksiders is definitely not something I'd call a bad game. And while it may feel derivative, it's not exactly generic. It falls into a weird categorization, and I'd say that it's worth looking at if you're a fan of this particular action genre. The story is well done, even if the environment isn't, and the action is fun and diverse enough to keep you entertained, even if it isn't the deepest. And since you can easily spend 15 hours on the story, you're getting a decent amount of game for your money.

The visuals are nothing to write home about. Darksiders is not a particularly good looking game, as its riddled with bland texture detail that's lacking polish. The cutscenes, which look a bit sharper, still manage to make all of the game's imperfections that much more obvious. Character detail is sharp around the edges, and the environments aren't what I'd call great to look at. On the plus side, the frame rate is pretty solid running mostly at 30 frames per second, with only the occasional frame dip or screen tear. Still, if you're looking for something good looking, Darksiders is not it.

The audio is a bit of a mixed bag. On one hand, the voice acting could've been a bit tighter, and the distorted voices for some of the hellish characters are pretty generic in execution. On the other hand, Mark Hamill, who voices The Watcher, is basically using his Joker voice for the character and it works extremely well in the game. There are parts outside of Hamill's acting that you'll like, as well, but those distorted voices will probably get on your nerves quick. At least the soundtrack is acceptable...perhaps a bit too derivative like other parts of the game, but acceptable.

Darksiders is definitely a game that's capable of becoming a full blown franchise for THQ. For a first game, the gameplay is executed fairly well, even if it isn't the deepest or best designed game. Visually, it can stand to see a number of improvements across the board, but it doesn't make you want to gauge your eyes out, at least. That said, give it a little time for the price to come down a bit on the game, and you'll probably find yourself enjoying it for about $30-40. But with Bayonetta already out, Dante's Inferno and especially God of War III around the corner, for $60 Darksiders is a hard pill to swallow.

I didn't expect much from this title infact I only wacthed maybe one or two videos and was like meh I might rent it, so I'm not surprised it didn't score in the eights. I can't see why this one didn't click with me it looks like it might be fun but it just didn't pop for me, maybe its GOW3 holding me back from likng anything esle in this genre right now, maybe after that I'll play it.

Im playing this game right now, and so far im liking it because it does have that zelda vibes with god of war flavor .As Arnold said above about the environment is true ,is not those that you stare at in awe but it will do.It has dungeons with very cool boss battles at the end and puzzles too that are good so far not too complicated but I havent gotten to the later dungeons yet but Im sure there gonna be harder.I really wasnt feeling Bayonetta or Dante's Inferno but cant really get too much out a demo .This will tie in until God of War 3.

Thanks for the quick review on this one, Arnold. I've been quite torn on whether I wanted this or not for some time now. War basically looks like some kind of offspring of Kratos and that big guy from Unreal Tournament III (or even Gears of War, at that). Maybe I'll give this a rent some time in the future, but as of now, my schedule is pretty booked up. Hopefully a demo comes out on the PSN.

Doesn't sound like I'll be keeping this one. I just got it from Gamefly but haven't played it yet.

At least you can play it on the hardest difficulty right off the bat and can get a 100% in one playthrough. Games that make you play them 3x because the difficulty trophies don't stack are getting annoying. (Bayonetta)

Most of the games that have difficulty trophies don't require you to playthrough on all levels, if you start on normal or hard you get the trophies for the easier levels when you complete the difficulty you play.

I just got done playing this game, for the night, and have to say it's a lot of fun. I have no problem with the "distorted" voices as they sound like many vocalists but Hamil's voice is pretty annoying. It's more of a whiny version of The Joker. I guess it works as he's supposed to annoy you. Maybe they were going for that approach.

I can see why the game got a low score for the graphics. They could have polished up the levels but the character designs are cool. For $40, I'm not complaining.

I am currently playing Bayonetta thanks to a fellow classmate and im loving it but I so some gameplay of this game and I kinda like the art direction ^_^ im a huge pushover when it comes to a great art style and this really has a nice look to it and from what I so all the rumors about the Zelda and GOW influences are true it really has a "jack of all trades" thing going on although it doesn't master any of them it seems to emulate them well enough ^_^ so when it drops to $40 im all over it.

(Thanks for reading my run on sentence ^_^)

I can't believe how narrow minded people are that this single review cancels out any other higher ones and prevents them from trying a game they could very well thoroughly enjoy. And this ISN'T a bad score anyway, people need to get over themselves that they are too good for anything that isn't a 9.0 or higher.

yes it is extremley harsh.
may not be as good as R&C or uncharted 2 but they look decent and have a nice deserted apocalyptic feel to them.
little more color would be nice, but than it is a post apocalyptic world so they need to maintain the dreary sad destroyed feel of the world.
not like halo 3 where your at war and everything is sunshine lollipops and rainbows.

sigh.
i guess i will never agree with reviews.
this game is absolutely FU**ING BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!
a game has not impressed me this much since, well since never.
the combat, the level design, the storyline, the graphics, the enemies, the fell of the game.
everythings perfect.
if i was to make a game this is what i would make, and i would like to think this is what david jafe would make, since he said if he was still working on GOW he would mix it with zelda.
only thing i would change is
1 add a few more combos.
2 instead of having triangle as the harvester make it a heavy attack button like GOW or dantes inferno.
3 some sort of long range attack would be nice.
4 more enemies during combat, theres only like 4 or so enemies on screen at once.
i should be running away because theres too many, not running around searching for more.
this game kicks the crap out of bayonetta, revives her and beats the crap out of her again before sending her to hell.
i love this game, hats off to vergil they did a FANTASTIC! job, and hats off to THQ for keeping this game under wraps.
i think thats why the game has impressed me so much, because there has not been much media hype about it.
yes that point again, it keeps coming up.
but since it keeps happening its obviously for a reason.
what a way to start the year, keep it coming guys this is the funnest game i have played since devil may cry 4.
GOW 3 better watch out, it just got a new contender for GOTY 2010.

just got my copy of PSM3 today and they have a massive 6 page preview of GOW3.
funny thing is this was not suppose to come out till January 18th because sony showed a new level of the game late last year, and that content is under embargo till january 18th.
and here i am reading it.
hope PSM3 dont get into trouble because of this, there the only AU MAG that get access to such big titles.
they have some really interesting information on bioshock 2 also, though everything i read about that game puts me off buying it.
just feels like there going in the wrong direction for the game.
ill get it, but only because the prequel was my favorite game of 07 and still one of the best games available.
they better not betray my trust!

i find the game good with a lasting impression of how good it is.i cant compare it to other games because individual opinions dont hold factual merit. the game is deeper than it seems and would take multiple plays or great patience to master, but if you just run through the game you dont have many obstacles; which is the only fault, your very powerful at most all times.the graphics have a style of its own and im sure some people would prefer not.the story reveals itself during play, and is not hard to follow upon attention.the game takes about 30 hours to complete all trophies; and if this is a sign of what is to come this generation i am pleased; for the package has no fluff moments and is the same climatic game from intro video to final scene.the puzzles are good but are of a different generational variety than zelda although you can see the lineage.good game 4.5/5 for me.

first game of the year contender.

Arnold I must say I disagree with your review. While this game is not ground breaking it is by far the best Zelda clone available, and considering this generation is over crowded with FPS's, and other lame army games, I find Darksiders to be quite refreshing. Also you say the game is graphically unimpressive? Given the games design roots (comic books) I think the game looks fantastic, its no Uncharted but its also not a PS3 exclusive. Also Im knocking points off your credibility for even mentioning Bayonetta. This is a PS3 website last I checked and Darksiders is the second coming compaired to the sloppy fecal stain that is Bayonetta on PS3. Darksiders runs better, looks better and is way closer to being worth the 59.99 then Bayonetta is. I understand your point about God of War 3 being way better, but the release is 2 months from now, Darksiders is not capable of measuring up to GoW 3, no third party game is. That being said its still a really good game for those looking to bide their time between action titles. People need to seriously get off the Bayonetta hyp machine, the game is not that big of a deal and on top of it the PS3 version is total crap. Hedeki Kamiya made a great 360 game and gave Playstation fans the shiv.
