God of War III Review
It didn't take long for God of War to become Sony's biggest property, next to Gran Turismo. In fact, it wasn't that long ago we got our first God of War game, helmed by David Jaffe, back in 2005. And now, four years later, the end to our trilogy has arrived for the PlayStation 3 after a much anticipated and grueling wait. The hysteria around God of War III has been nothing short of epic, as coverage in the press generated massive amounts of feedback...people really wanted this game, and they wanted it bad. Videos and screenshots sent all gaming message boards into a buzz, and I'm about to tell you why.
As we all know, God of War is franchise that pretty much rewrites much of Greek mythology. But in addition to rewriting Greek mythology, the franchise has also rewritten the rule book for what an action game should be, and God of War III takes everything the first two games did and adds to it to what I call the 'infinith power'. About two hours into the game, I picked up the phone and gave Ben a call, and ask about his day. Basically, the point of my call was to setup Ben to ask me how *my* day was, and when he did, I promptly respond with a: "oh, you know...slaying gods, demons, a titan here and there. Just the everyday usual stuff." A few seconds of silence later, Ben told me how much he hated me, and I proceeded to fill that hatred to the brim, by telling him how utterly epic God of War III was.
Ben said he wasn't surprised, seeing as how epic the first two were. And I told him to forget about the first two. Just forget them. Because what God of War I and II were isn't even a bread crumb on a giant loaf of bread. It was hard for me to explain simply how nuts the first hour of the game was, because it is without question *the* most epic first hour of a video game. Ever. Now, a word like epic gets thrown around a lot, and usually when I use it, I mean it. Because games like Uncharted 2 and KillZone 2 were, indeed, pretty damn epic.
But in this case, I need a word that's bigger than epic, but unfortunately, I can't think of one...so what I will do is simply tell you God of War III is epic2 - yes, that's epic squared. And no, the demo most of you have played is not part of that first hour of the game, like past GOW demos are. In fact, the downloadable demo is very heavily edited and is missing tons and tons of segments and key moments (that are obviously spoilers) that you'll see when you reach the stage in the actual game a few hours into it.
Much of the same concepts remain for the sequel, albeit with newer weapons, abilities, and such. One notable change I've noticed was that the QTE minigames have been given a minor revision. Instead of displaying the button in the center of the screen, obscuring Kratos and whatever enemy he's about to demolish, the buttons are now designated and displayed based on their location on the Dual Shock. So Triangle will appear at the top, X on the bottom, Square on the left, and Circle on the right.
The action is still the smoothest of any action game, bar none. I don't care what you throw at me, you can combine all of those other action titles, and they still don't add up to the lunacy of God of War III. The boss fights are fantastic, and more diverse than you may imagine - I'll refrain from giving out too many details, so you will see how diverse for yourself. The atmosphere of the game is utterly engrossing, moreso than the past games, and that's likely because of the power and flexibility a machine like the PS3 offers the developers. Furthermore, the story is brilliant, and some of the twists you'll encounter will have your jaw on the floor - Kratos does some stuff that's just...cold blooded, and yet so badass!
Now, unfortunately, there are a few quirks, largely related to controls. You will experience a number of cheap deaths as platforms will unexpectedly break, a fire comes from behind and burns you to death, you're trying to dodge falling boulders and instead of shimmying right quickly, Kratos goes straight up, or the worst, you hit an invisible wall mid-jump and plummet to your death. The shimmy and platforming issues bothered me most. There are times I would look straight at my controller, see my analog stick pointed perfectly right or left, only to witness Kratos jump up. After many deaths, I'd eventually get through the segment, only to find myself at a platforming segment that requires a lot of well timed jumps, double jumps, and some wings. Often times my wings wouldn't deploy, or the second jump would barely even happen and I plummet to my death over and over again.
In all seriousness, all 20+ of my deaths were because of the issues mentioned above, and not from a battle. I've also experienced a number of times where I'd be standing directly in front of a chest and the R1 prompt wouldn't pop-up; some chests I had to open either standing further back, more from the side, or walking away and coming back. There are definitely some control quirks here.
Moving on, I will make this very blunt: God of War III is the biggest powerhouse to run on any console at the moment. It is easily the best looking game available today - just a smidge better looking than Uncharted 2, if only because of the better framerate and sense of scale being so tremendous. The texture detail all around you is absurdly detailed, and the work applied on Kratos makes him perhaps the single best looking videogame character to date. Sony has gone through great lengths to make God of War III an unparalleled visual experience and they've succeeded in their efforts to do so. The screenshots and videos simply do this game no justice, it is truly needed to be witnessed in person.
Furthermore, since I mentioned the framerate, unlike the first two God of War games, God of War III is not locked to 60 frames per second, but rather, runs between 30 and 60, depending on the situation. It's no drawback to the game, solely because the changes in framerate aren't very perceptible at all, and if I can barely notice them, I highly doubt anyone else will have an issue with it. The framerate was left to vary in such a way so that the game can boast a horde of extra effects that truly give the visuals a beautiful and cinematic effect. To add to this cinematic effect is the downright flawless lighting, the superb animation (which, we're told, is not physics based), and a slew of other visual goodies that make this the absolute best looking videogame to date.
Now, the audio is a bit of a questionable issue here, because the retail game seems to have a problem with the voice acting sounding way too low. As some of you may recall, this is an issue that's occurred in the past with other games, and has been patched. So I'm certain Sony will address the issue...unfortunately, I'm grading this based on what I have in front of me. And at this moment, I can only play the game using subtitles, otherwise I can barely make sense of the cutscene dialogue. Oddly enough, the voices of gigantic characters have no problem coming through the speakers loud and clear, just characters like Kratos, Zeus, etc. When the audio is loud, I can most certainly hear how brilliant the voice acting is, and how every aspect of it is acted out so flawlessly. Moreover, the orchestrated soundtrack and those powerful sound effects deliver a punch few action games can compete with. Let me make note of this: if Sony addresses the voice volume with a patch, I will raise the audio to a proper 10.
So what else can I say about God of War III? There probably isn't a whole lot to say to make you guys want the game any more than you already do. I can't praise this game enough for everything that it does so effortlessly. The adventure will run you about 8-10 hours, and chances are you will go back for another round with your acquired goodies in tow. God of War III is the epitome of what this generation is all about: lavish visuals, marvelous gameplay, storytelling that is unlike any other, and an overall presentation that simply cannot be beat. God of War III is an early candidate and sure fire front-runner for game of the year.

I checked out the Famitsu review, and I think it's enough to know that the game isn't broken. Also, I did some research and found out that, at the very least, they DIDN'T lead development on a 360-specific engine, so we shouldn't have to worry too much about any version being too much worse than another.
That being said... I HAVE held off on my Amazon preorder until I can find out more.

I can't wait to dismember people. This is one game Hollywood SURELY should make a movie after. Can you imagine James Cameron in the directors chair for a Gow of War movie in 3d nonetheless?. Avatar as great as it was couldn't touch it.

Sounds like someone defending their short, um... manhood. GOW3 has a mini-game that will make you feel better in that department.
Good review for a great game. Keep up the good work.

Im beginning to think your not much of a gamer to say something like that! I still havent beaten GTA4 and that has tons of hours of gameplay but it isn't quality gameplay. GoW3 is pure action quality gameplay. I'll take that thank you!
I remember paying full price for Mario games that I beat in a day! My, have we come so far just to become spoiled...
BTW
If your into trophies like I am tack on double the replay value.

Also I read in this site and others that the game was going to be 15 hours at least.. not 8, but well I search again and it looks that info was a misunderstanding .
other thing in some of the negative reviews they talk about length so yeah, a lot of people cares about length.
p.s yes I'm not a gamer, just a regular dude that like games.

<<<Length is irrelevant. I've always said that. Provided the experience is fulfilling, length is IRRELEVANT.>>>
I'd have to disagree a bit there.
I liked Ghost Recon:Advanced Warfighter 2, but I was pissed upon ending the SP campaign(don't do MP modes) that I(an average player) was able to complete it in only 4 hours.

Anyways, first off, I knew it wasn't a lengthy game, it's just that there was this rumor that it'd take around 15+ hours, but oh well...
I'm glad about the framerate balancing from 30 to 60 f/s and of course the awesome visuals, which I really can't wait to witness with my own eyes.
About the platforming issues, I didn't have any problem with this during the demo, I hope it will get fixed.
Lastly, God of War FTW!!! Nooo, still 11 days to go... dam y'all for getting to play it before me -_-, nah, you deserve it, some of you.

True Alienange, about the games and movie comaprison. Plus, games get resurrected nowadays if they die, RE5 was woken up recently with a bunch of cool DLC and folks have already regretted selling theirs. I'm sure we're not going to see GOW4 soon, so I think I might wait, no rush.

I couldn't get shot of it quick enough, tbh, and the only thing that COULD restore some interest for me is IF the Wands arrive with a nunchuck type second controller just to see if it's as good for RE5 as it was for RE4 on the Wii.
GOW3 and Y3 in the same week, though, represents gaming heaven for this little man and I'll be at them for weeks to come. Great review Arnold, as well, and amng the best i've seen for GOW3-which has had, imo, a couple of really bad 8/10 scores which made out it didn't change enough and that's coming from, both times, sites who gave ODST 9/10 and Halo3 10/10! Some people want PS3 games to reinvent the wheel every release while allowing older gameplay in 360 games to be allowed as "classic"!

I wonder if the sound issue with the voices had anything to do if one was using a sound system. Because, I don't use one (I typically use headphones), and I've never had such an issue with any of my games. But, when i was playing GTA4 on my friend's setup, who was using an audio system, I noticed that lowered effect with the voice overs. And if I boosted the volume (or adjusted the audio system and in-game settings) it was to no avail as everything else would further drown out the voices.

In all honesty, you haven't played GOW3 yet. How do you know for sure that it is truly more epic than Bayonetta? (Everyone expects this, but it is not a definite in everyone's eyes.) On top of that, two different people reviewed the games in question on IGN. If both guys reviewed both games, you might get something a little different. (I wish there were more sites that gave more than one review for certain games because then you are able to get couple of perspectives to choose from instead of having one review from a guy who might or might not like a certain genre.)
As for the sound, I felt like everything on Mass Effect 2 was lower than any of my other games on both consoles. How does something like this and what happened with your version of GOW3 come about, Arnold?

On top of which, there are many reviews that hardly anyone reads (for games that aren't as big), and we're usually harsher than most other sites for many of them. We also gave Demon's Souls and inFamous below a 9 last year when many other sources did not.
Dridion
Monday, March 08, 2010 @ 12:58:29 PM
The point of this is that IGN never does that to the T. Look at their review of WKC...what a disgrace to the title. When they reviewed GoW3 they toke of huge points for some "low textures" that popped up in some rare occasions. That sounds like nitpicking to me. All this tells me is that GoW3 is on a level of its own.
And though a demo is never a definite example of the actual game, it still IS a representation of it, however bad it may be. I personally loved the demo and feel like it was well more polished and tight compared to Beyonetta.
Regardless of everything stated, like I said in my previous post, this review is the MAIN reason why I'll continue to come here...they throw the bullsh** out the window and tell you were it'll land. It's up to us ultimately to either move away from that spot or let the sh** hit us on the face.

My main reason for saying that was not to tarnish how you guys review games. It was merely to set the record straight about what to expect by coming to this website. (A PS3 bias.) I like what you guys have to say about PS3. I will go to an Xbox 360 website on everything concerning that console. I wouldn't exactly take everything said about the other console from either website at face value. Instead, load me up on some sodium when you guys talk about the Xbox and when they talk about the Playstation. Does that make sense?

The site is not biased, that word automatically brings a negative connotation, which you have to be aware of. Sure the site focuses on PS3 games, but Ben is an equal opportunity gamer who has a 360 and a PS3 and freely admits to playing, and -shock, horror! - enjoying 360 games. In fact I distinctly remember that during the review of Bayonetta there was clear advice that the 360 version was the better version and if folks have a 360 they should get the 360 version. If this place was so biased to the PS3, why the heck would they ever advise people to buy a 360 version of a game because it's better?
Stop trying to play semantic games.

And besides, that wasn't even the point of my statement. I was mainly commenting on Dridion's premature take on the game, but it got turned into an argument on whether or not this website _______ed PS3 more than other consoles. (Fill in the blank with a word that is not biased towards or against being "biased" in anyway.)
As for your comment about Ben actually endorsing the 360 version of Bayonetta, you're right in the fact that most reviewing websites that are specific to a certain console would not do the same. That's part of the beauty of this website. It's more laid back and not as uptight about certain issues such as this. But one game is not enough to say this is not a website devoted towards "equal" preference of all consoles.
With all that being said, I stand by my original comments not being an insult in any way.

We believe PS3 exclusives are the best of the best, yes. That's subjective, of course, but it's hardly PROMOTED in the news or really, anywhere else. Worst of all, you're implying that because we prefer the PS3, that somehow means our reviews are biased and therefore unreliable and even meaningless. We go out of our way on a consistent basis to go into every single review with a blank slate of mind.
You don't have to believe it if you so choose. You can ignore the literally dozens upon dozens of times we have publicly said the 360 version of a certain game is better (I only want the best versions of everything; do you honestly think I give a sh** what platform that version is on?). You can ignore all of it and just say that because we're "PSX Extreme," there's a bias. Believe what you want.
But please don't make the assumptions that make us absolutely CRAZY. We work hard to produce a site for PlayStation fans. This is NOT synonymous with only focusing on all the positive and ignoring the negative in regards to that brand. Maybe if you read a bit more rather than merely assumed, you'd know this.

ALL I was trying to say was this site leans towards the PS3 side of the aisle. Take it how you want and remain "champion of the boards" by "smacking me down" "ftw!", but what I said was not an insult and it still isn't.
I read this website every day, post on this site almost every day, and I recommend the site all the time. Trust me, I have read plenty to know that you guys favor PS3 games without compromising your integrity. If I really thought you were not fair in your reporting, why would I come to this website daily, let alone, sign up for a username and post on various boards? I guess I should post a disclaimer stating that that comment in no way implies that you will be mislead, lied to, or unfairly treated by the reviews given here. Would that help?

But when you go and add that we hold a PS3 bias, that sort of rings loudly in my ears. It basically means that while we're "fair," we're also going to harbor a bias that other sites don't have.
That's what I take issue with. And you have to remember, it's a touchy subject for us...it seems like everyone unfamiliar with PSXE automatically makes snap assumptions that have never been true. We can't possibly clear that up with our name, so we just have to ignore it and do what we do. But when it comes out in the Comments, you have to expect us to respond.
I hope you can understand that.

That said I'm not sure where you are shopping but I have seen Killzone 2 for $40 in quite a few places and the Sony Style website for a good while was selling resistance 2 for $10. Those are some sweet deals.

a lot of the hate he spews out about the system sounds like its coming from someone who hasn't spent enough time on what he is hating. Then again, maybe he has had significant time with it

I've had enough experiance understand that the xbox is a poor investment and has zero games that appeal to my taste. And don't act like the "facts" aren't readily available to you. It's called google. I suggest you use it.
Or! You can ignore what I have to say if you don't like it. I don't have to appreciate the Xbox to like games. There's no litmus test for gaming now is there?

One question that does come to mind though is the control issue that Arnold mentioned. It sounded quite annoying and yet the game got 10/10 for gameplay. Was the rest of the game play and control so good that it compensated for the faulty play that you noted Arnold?

Cause I find your bumbling typing hard to read.
Also if you are such an expert, why do you feel the need to post comments questioning the legitimacy of this website?
As a side note, just because you take more than 10 hours doesn't mean everyone will. It's an action game, some people have amazing skills when it comes to these types of games.
Don't feel bad, not everyone can excel at everything.

I love the fact that they repeate the epic opening. I never thought they could outdo GOW I's Cracken battle but then they came out with GOW II's insane Colossus of Rhodes thrashing...now, GOW III is set to blow all of that out of the water? I love you Santa Monica...I really do!

I remember letting my friend borrow the first when it came out and then hearing him latter go on about how great the gameplay was or the storylines. GOW3 will be a 10 to me, so much so that I actually forked out the extra $$ for the Ultimate Edition, the first time I ever have for a game!

Japan is cold and rainy today, but my japanese girlfriend makes me forget this;-)
By the way, I`m from Germany.
We love the Playstation 3, and last time I checked it outsold the XBOX 360 6 to 1.
And when Gran Turismo 5 will be released before Christmas, I think the gap will become even bigger,
because we all love cars as well;-)

I finally joined the community. Your site is really great, and seems to be one of the last unbiased places for PS3-fans around. After some of the sh** written about God of War 3, I finally decided to abandon all this hypocrite commercial sites forever. They just destroy the fun videogames should all be about.
Of course every person has it`s own opinion, but I just can`t understand the critisicm for "the same as before" when this sh**-sites praise every shooter on earth like it was something new and never seen before. Every genre has it`s elements, this is like
saying Karate isn`t innovative because you use your hands and feeds to fight, and we have seen this before with Kung Fu...
Anyway, I know this site and it`s community is great.
And I will get my newsfix here from now on.
Continue the great work!
I can`t wait for GOW3,
but unfortunately here in Japan I have to wait until march 25.
I`ll wait paitiently...)

I'm so pumped to see the great score up there. I knew that I was going to buy this game no matter what the scores were like, but this just makes me all the more excited.
I'm freaking out. One week to go Jed, just one week...
At least I have time to finish another run through of GoW 2.
If they already have a patch ready for the sound of the voices, I'll bet they also have a fix for the control problems, as far as opening up chests goes.

Next I'd like to say a few things about length, cost, and the apparent debate over which is more important.
I personally can see both sides of the fence. Some of you have the money to buy every game you want, day 1, no questions asked. For those of you who can, congratulations, seriously, I'm happy that you make that kind of money. What you must understand tho is that some people cannot afford a day 1 purchase on all games and must decide which one they will choose.
As far as length, while 8-10 hours is perfectly healthy for this type of game, if you consider that some people are trying to choose between Gowiii and ffxiii because they can only afford 1 or the other right now, then considering length of play should perhaps be an issue. According to reviews both will be highly worth the purchase, but for those who can only buy say, 1 game per month, ffxiii would be a choice that makes more sense.
I personally plan on getting gowiii, but not right away. I grew up in a house without video games and so I have yet to play any of them. I plan on purchasing and playing the hd collection and then buying and playing gowiii. However all of this will only take place once I have the money. The last game I bought was white knight chronicles and I won't be able to afford another game for a few more weeks.
So all I'm saying is that some of us have had to learn to be patient, to wait until a game costs less. I'm not saying that gowiii isn't worth the $60 price tag, just that I can afford to be patient and wait until it is cheaper.
Remember patience is something that some of us are forced to learn, but I'm willing to wait for a good deal in order to make gowiii all the more sweeter in the end.

1080P, 60FPS HDR lighting and there are suppose to be enemies in there to make cronos the titan look like a ant.
cant wait till E3 theres suppose to be a massive blow out there.
only time will tell.
back on track with the sound issue i thought i was going mad, i thought i was the only one that noticed that.
i HATE! it when games do that.
i do most of my gaming late at night and because of where i live i have to have the speakers low so with most games i get pissed because i cant hear what the ^%$# is being said.
the dialogue is always way lower than the sound effects, killzone 2 for example id be in game blowing fools. than come cut scene id have to scramble quickly for the remote so i can turn the speakers up so i can hear whats being said.
if i can hear whats happening in game at a certain volume than i should be able to hear the dialogue too.
nothing more annoying than having to scramble for the remote to turn the volume up, than turn it down once cut scene ends and rinse and repeat.
makes me want to turn the game off early and play it later when i dont have to have the speakers so low.

A bit off-topic: but can the PSX site have some sort of tabular details of all review games with their review scores? Like, If i want to view all the game with respect to scores? Because for future PSX fans, it'd be much easier so that they see up front that "Hey, MGS4, Heavy Rain and God of War III got DAMN high scores! Let's get those games." It's pretty tedious to check each and every one of the games just to see the score. Just my two cents :)
On-topic: length isn't supposed to be tied to quality. MGS4 and Uncharted 2 left a lasting great taste on my mouth that I couldn't shrug..well... up until now :)

jsut lower everything else, then raise the volume to compensate on the tv, stereo, hometheather, whatever....not sure if the voices are tied to the game FX volume though if they are then ya might have to wait for a patch

But yeah, the end is great. And that is why IGN gave it a 9.3. I think they didn't understand the end. It's very deep and suprising. It is an end that the trilogy deserves.
