It didn't take long for God of War to become Sony's biggest property, next to Gran Turismo. In fact, it wasn't that long ago we got our first God of War game, helmed by David Jaffe, back in 2005. And now, four years later, the end to our trilogy has arrived for the PlayStation 3 after a much anticipated and grueling wait. The hysteria around God of War III has been nothing short of epic, as coverage in the press generated massive amounts of feedback...people really wanted this game, and they wanted it bad. Videos and screenshots sent all gaming message boards into a buzz, and I'm about to tell you why.

As we all know, God of War is franchise that pretty much rewrites much of Greek mythology. But in addition to rewriting Greek mythology, the franchise has also rewritten the rule book for what an action game should be, and God of War III takes everything the first two games did and adds to it to what I call the 'infinith power'. About two hours into the game, I picked up the phone and gave Ben a call, and ask about his day. Basically, the point of my call was to setup Ben to ask me how *my* day was, and when he did, I promptly respond with a: "oh, you know...slaying gods, demons, a titan here and there. Just the everyday usual stuff." A few seconds of silence later, Ben told me how much he hated me, and I proceeded to fill that hatred to the brim, by telling him how utterly epic God of War III was.

Ben said he wasn't surprised, seeing as how epic the first two were. And I told him to forget about the first two. Just forget them. Because what God of War I and II were isn't even a bread crumb on a giant loaf of bread. It was hard for me to explain simply how nuts the first hour of the game was, because it is without question *the* most epic first hour of a video game. Ever. Now, a word like epic gets thrown around a lot, and usually when I use it, I mean it. Because games like Uncharted 2 and KillZone 2 were, indeed, pretty damn epic.

But in this case, I need a word that's bigger than epic, but unfortunately, I can't think of one...so what I will do is simply tell you God of War III is epic2 - yes, that's epic squared. And no, the demo most of you have played is not part of that first hour of the game, like past GOW demos are. In fact, the downloadable demo is very heavily edited and is missing tons and tons of segments and key moments (that are obviously spoilers) that you'll see when you reach the stage in the actual game a few hours into it.

Much of the same concepts remain for the sequel, albeit with newer weapons, abilities, and such. One notable change I've noticed was that the QTE minigames have been given a minor revision. Instead of displaying the button in the center of the screen, obscuring Kratos and whatever enemy he's about to demolish, the buttons are now designated and displayed based on their location on the Dual Shock. So Triangle will appear at the top, X on the bottom, Square on the left, and Circle on the right.

The action is still the smoothest of any action game, bar none. I don't care what you throw at me, you can combine all of those other action titles, and they still don't add up to the lunacy of God of War III. The boss fights are fantastic, and more diverse than you may imagine - I'll refrain from giving out too many details, so you will see how diverse for yourself. The atmosphere of the game is utterly engrossing, moreso than the past games, and that's likely because of the power and flexibility a machine like the PS3 offers the developers. Furthermore, the story is brilliant, and some of the twists you'll encounter will have your jaw on the floor - Kratos does some stuff that's just...cold blooded, and yet so badass!

Now, unfortunately, there are a few quirks, largely related to controls. You will experience a number of cheap deaths as platforms will unexpectedly break, a fire comes from behind and burns you to death, you're trying to dodge falling boulders and instead of shimmying right quickly, Kratos goes straight up, or the worst, you hit an invisible wall mid-jump and plummet to your death. The shimmy and platforming issues bothered me most. There are times I would look straight at my controller, see my analog stick pointed perfectly right or left, only to witness Kratos jump up. After many deaths, I'd eventually get through the segment, only to find myself at a platforming segment that requires a lot of well timed jumps, double jumps, and some wings. Often times my wings wouldn't deploy, or the second jump would barely even happen and I plummet to my death over and over again.

In all seriousness, all 20+ of my deaths were because of the issues mentioned above, and not from a battle. I've also experienced a number of times where I'd be standing directly in front of a chest and the R1 prompt wouldn't pop-up; some chests I had to open either standing further back, more from the side, or walking away and coming back. There are definitely some control quirks here.

Moving on, I will make this very blunt: God of War III is the biggest powerhouse to run on any console at the moment. It is easily the best looking game available today - just a smidge better looking than Uncharted 2, if only because of the better framerate and sense of scale being so tremendous. The texture detail all around you is absurdly detailed, and the work applied on Kratos makes him perhaps the single best looking videogame character to date. Sony has gone through great lengths to make God of War III an unparalleled visual experience and they've succeeded in their efforts to do so. The screenshots and videos simply do this game no justice, it is truly needed to be witnessed in person.

Furthermore, since I mentioned the framerate, unlike the first two God of War games, God of War III is not locked to 60 frames per second, but rather, runs between 30 and 60, depending on the situation. It's no drawback to the game, solely because the changes in framerate aren't very perceptible at all, and if I can barely notice them, I highly doubt anyone else will have an issue with it. The framerate was left to vary in such a way so that the game can boast a horde of extra effects that truly give the visuals a beautiful and cinematic effect. To add to this cinematic effect is the downright flawless lighting, the superb animation (which, we're told, is not physics based), and a slew of other visual goodies that make this the absolute best looking videogame to date.

Now, the audio is a bit of a questionable issue here, because the retail game seems to have a problem with the voice acting sounding way too low. As some of you may recall, this is an issue that's occurred in the past with other games, and has been patched. So I'm certain Sony will address the issue...unfortunately, I'm grading this based on what I have in front of me. And at this moment, I can only play the game using subtitles, otherwise I can barely make sense of the cutscene dialogue. Oddly enough, the voices of gigantic characters have no problem coming through the speakers loud and clear, just characters like Kratos, Zeus, etc. When the audio is loud, I can most certainly hear how brilliant the voice acting is, and how every aspect of it is acted out so flawlessly. Moreover, the orchestrated soundtrack and those powerful sound effects deliver a punch few action games can compete with. Let me make note of this: if Sony addresses the voice volume with a patch, I will raise the audio to a proper 10.

So what else can I say about God of War III? There probably isn't a whole lot to say to make you guys want the game any more than you already do. I can't praise this game enough for everything that it does so effortlessly. The adventure will run you about 8-10 hours, and chances are you will go back for another round with your acquired goodies in tow. God of War III is the epitome of what this generation is all about: lavish visuals, marvelous gameplay, storytelling that is unlike any other, and an overall presentation that simply cannot be beat. God of War III is an early candidate and sure fire front-runner for game of the year.

I don't think I have ever seen a review this high. Glad I ordered this but we all know everyone that has a PS3 is going to buy this. Interesting on the replay value. None of the others had high replay value in my opinion even after unlocking costumes and stuff because it was the exact same game all over again so I wasn't in a rush to do so but looks like this one will be different. Can't wait and excellent review as usual.

@ World,

I checked out the Famitsu review, and I think it's enough to know that the game isn't broken. Also, I did some research and found out that, at the very least, they DIDN'T lead development on a 360-specific engine, so we shouldn't have to worry too much about any version being too much worse than another.

That being said... I HAVE held off on my Amazon preorder until I can find out more.

I find it a bit petty to thumb Arvis down just because he said he wants to play Resonance of Fate instead. He didn't talk bad about GOW3 and not everyone who has a PS3 is obligated to buy it. I'm not buying it either, because I can only buy one game at the moment and that game happens to be Resonance of Fate, since I've been looking towards it since 2009. I hope GOW3 and FFXIII sells millions (I know they will), but for the time being, I have my sights set on other things :P

What are you disappointed about? 8 - 10 hrs for an action game seem pretty long to me, any longer I would think make the story loose its luster.

8-10 hours? I don't remember hearing or seeing that anywhere. I am trying to remember how long Infamous or Dante's Inferno took because that does sound kind of short especially since I heard they used to much disk space to make this game. Regardless I will take quality over quantity any day and if this game damn near gets a perfect 10 score it could be 5 mintues long for all I care because Kratos has never disappointed us before and he doesn't ened a lot of time tog et his point across.
I can't wait to dismember people. This is one game Hollywood SURELY should make a movie after. Can you imagine James Cameron in the directors chair for a Gow of War movie in 3d nonetheless?. Avatar as great as it was couldn't touch it.

So what? A game doesn't need to be 100+ hours to be fun; 100 hours can be filled with boring, inane content anyway. NGS2 & Bayonetta are both 16 hours long on average, but I'm having so much fun with them and they'll be keeping me busy for a while.

Even if the game takes you 8 hrs to beat it once, that is $7.50 an hour so I think that is very good value.

Don't be an idiot like the reviewer. Officially announced by the game director he said that it depends on the players to finish the game in 10 hours. Even if you are good it will take you more than at least 11 hours. For amateurs will be like 13 to 15 hours. God of War 3 is more than 10 hours. TRUST ME.

@Ben, THANK YOU. A game should be as long as it should be. Like books, movies and pretty much everything else, the appropriate length should be determined on a case-by-case basis. I've always loved God of War games because they are not too long -- the game ends and you feel thrilled, not overstuffed.

Also I read in this site and others that the game was going to be 15 hours at least.. not 8, but well I search again and it looks that info was a misunderstanding .

other thing in some of the negative reviews they talk about length so yeah, a lot of people cares about length.

Well, I have now played both God of War I and II about 3 or 4 times, resulting in about 80+ hours of gaming between the two. Some people would say that re-plays don't count, but for me it makes it worth it because trophies have made a completionist out of me. Even if they removed the trophies, the need to find every little thing would still be there. My two cents.

Oh and btw, you can have whatever opinion you want about the length of the game, but unless you link me to some proof I remember the "announced" length of the game being just a rumour.

Anyways, first off, I knew it wasn't a lengthy game, it's just that there was this rumor that it'd take around 15+ hours, but oh well...

I'm glad about the framerate balancing from 30 to 60 f/s and of course the awesome visuals, which I really can't wait to witness with my own eyes.

About the platforming issues, I didn't have any problem with this during the demo, I hope it will get fixed.

Ultimate editions and special editions are not my style. Don't get me wrong, to each their own and the GOW ultimate edition looks cool but I'm not into soundtracks and art and comis and behind the scenes footage and special wrapping and in the case of games like Resistance 2, a figurine. It's 40 dollars more for that extra stuff that won't change the game once you load it except for some extra costumes but 20 dollars more and you can get another game like.....FF13. Wish they would focus more on in game content like Dante's Inferno does. Give me something like a prequel level or a bif Superman symbol on my chest or something ya know? Something to enhance actual game play. I'm not knocking special editions of anything though and I will admit if funds were not so tight I would get them for every game but right now that's not an option. :(

Controller wear and tear is a legitimate problem for anyone who plays a lot. The biggest issues I've seen is sticky analogs and the tops of the analog sticks tearing and flipping off the top. I used to worry about the battery life in the sixaxis/Dual Shock 3, now I worry about the ability of the analog sticks to stand up to punishment because few controllers seem likely to last long enough for battery life to be a problem.

Agreed Nazty-I've still got EVERY resi game up to Resi5 in my collection and didn't trade any. I've even still got Umbrella Chronicles FFS! But playing forced co-op with an NPC in SP mode was the worst design choice in living memory and in any form of arts and media too, imo.

I couldn't get shot of it quick enough, tbh, and the only thing that COULD restore some interest for me is IF the Wands arrive with a nunchuck type second controller just to see if it's as good for RE5 as it was for RE4 on the Wii.

GOW3 and Y3 in the same week, though, represents gaming heaven for this little man and I'll be at them for weeks to come. Great review Arnold, as well, and amng the best i've seen for GOW3-which has had, imo, a couple of really bad 8/10 scores which made out it didn't change enough and that's coming from, both times, sites who gave ODST 9/10 and Halo3 10/10! Some people want PS3 games to reinvent the wheel every release while allowing older gameplay in 360 games to be allowed as "classic"!

Awesome. Can't wait. You don't know how excited I was just to see the review go up!

I wonder if the sound issue with the voices had anything to do if one was using a sound system. Because, I don't use one (I typically use headphones), and I've never had such an issue with any of my games. But, when i was playing GTA4 on my friend's setup, who was using an audio system, I noticed that lowered effect with the voice overs. And if I boosted the volume (or adjusted the audio system and in-game settings) it was to no avail as everything else would further drown out the voices.

I know most of you don't care and a score of a 9.3 is still pretty high, but for ign to give GoW3 that score seems ridiculous. Am I the only one who thinks that? I mean Beyonetta got the same score and IMO it comes nowhere near the EPICNESS of GoW3...just saying. That happens to be why I come here for all info, you guys are so impartial to games regardless of platforms and is the reason why you give out FANTASTIC review. Keep up the excellent work. Actually, this site heavily favors PS3 games. That's very clear, but I digress.

In all honesty, you haven't played GOW3 yet. How do you know for sure that it is truly more epic than Bayonetta? (Everyone expects this, but it is not a definite in everyone's eyes.) On top of that, two different people reviewed the games in question on IGN. If both guys reviewed both games, you might get something a little different. (I wish there were more sites that gave more than one review for certain games because then you are able to get couple of perspectives to choose from instead of having one review from a guy who might or might not like a certain genre.)

As for the sound, I felt like everything on Mass Effect 2 was lower than any of my other games on both consoles. How does something like this and what happened with your version of GOW3 come about, Arnold?

No, we don't "heavily favor" anything. A multiplatform game is our second-highest rated game of the generation, plus others, (ACII, Fallout 3, etc.) have scored in the mid-9s.

On top of which, there are many reviews that hardly anyone reads (for games that aren't as big), and we're usually harsher than most other sites for many of them. We also gave Demon's Souls and inFamous below a 9 last year when many other sources did not.

Ummm....regardless of what this site covers, and yes it's nothing but sony news, Ben and Arnold will both tell you how much they like Gears or any other title from xbox. Because of that they already have an unbiased mindset. Like I said they are impartial to either system and it really does come across in their reviews. Did you not read the review for Beyonetta? It was advised to get the 360 version. They never hold back punches even if it's a beloved game like GoW3 hence the 9.8.
The point of this is that IGN never does that to the T. Look at their review of WKC...what a disgrace to the title. When they reviewed GoW3 they toke of huge points for some "low textures" that popped up in some rare occasions. That sounds like nitpicking to me. All this tells me is that GoW3 is on a level of its own.

And though a demo is never a definite example of the actual game, it still IS a representation of it, however bad it may be. I personally loved the demo and feel like it was well more polished and tight compared to Beyonetta.

Regardless of everything stated, like I said in my previous post, this review is the MAIN reason why I'll continue to come here...they throw the bullsh** out the window and tell you were it'll land. It's up to us ultimately to either move away from that spot or let the sh** hit us on the face.

C'mon. You're truly saying you don't favor PS3 games over Xbox 360 games? Why is this site just an all "Playstation" site then? There are several editorials that you write about that prove my point.

My main reason for saying that was not to tarnish how you guys review games. It was merely to set the record straight about what to expect by coming to this website. (A PS3 bias.) I like what you guys have to say about PS3. I will go to an Xbox 360 website on everything concerning that console. I wouldn't exactly take everything said about the other console from either website at face value. Instead, load me up on some sodium when you guys talk about the Xbox and when they talk about the Playstation. Does that make sense?

@AudiaK

The site is not biased, that word automatically brings a negative connotation, which you have to be aware of. Sure the site focuses on PS3 games, but Ben is an equal opportunity gamer who has a 360 and a PS3 and freely admits to playing, and -shock, horror! - enjoying 360 games. In fact I distinctly remember that during the review of Bayonetta there was clear advice that the 360 version was the better version and if folks have a 360 they should get the 360 version. If this place was so biased to the PS3, why the heck would they ever advise people to buy a 360 version of a game because it's better?

Stop trying to play semantic games.

Apparently, Highlander, Dridion didn't seem to know that this site was "slanted/biased/leaning" towards Playstation when he mentioned that they were "impartial to games, regardless of console." This is just a fact. No semantics.

And besides, that wasn't even the point of my statement. I was mainly commenting on Dridion's premature take on the game, but it got turned into an argument on whether or not this website _______ed PS3 more than other consoles. (Fill in the blank with a word that is not biased towards or against being "biased" in anyway.)

As for your comment about Ben actually endorsing the 360 version of Bayonetta, you're right in the fact that most reviewing websites that are specific to a certain console would not do the same. That's part of the beauty of this website. It's more laid back and not as uptight about certain issues such as this. But one game is not enough to say this is not a website devoted towards "equal" preference of all consoles.

With all that being said, I stand by my original comments not being an insult in any way.

He said the same thing about Dragon Age. While deciding to cover mainly the Sony consoles could colloquially be said to be "biased" or slanted in that direction, it is incorrect when subjected to a more substantive analysis of the actual content when taking into account the more common form of "biased" which is to be blind to any faults and support one console and its games over another regardless of the obvious.

World, replace "biased" with any synonym you feel is correct and you still get the same result. Let's say that this website recommends you get another console's version of the same game offered 10% of the time. (That's really generous.) Even then, would you say that this was a PS3 site or an all-inclusive "un-favoring" site? The content on this site is extremely PS3 "favored".

AudiaK: You can stop now. I've written dozens of editorials promoting 360 ownership. Several have echoed my belief that the PS3 and 360 is one of the best gaming console tandems I've ever had. I've written editorials about the unfortunate prevalence of shoddy PS3 ports. I just did an editorial about how I believe exclusives for BOTH platforms are the best titles available.

We believe PS3 exclusives are the best of the best, yes. That's subjective, of course, but it's hardly PROMOTED in the news or really, anywhere else. Worst of all, you're implying that because we prefer the PS3, that somehow means our reviews are biased and therefore unreliable and even meaningless. We go out of our way on a consistent basis to go into every single review with a blank slate of mind.

You don't have to believe it if you so choose. You can ignore the literally dozens upon dozens of times we have publicly said the 360 version of a certain game is better (I only want the best versions of everything; do you honestly think I give a sh** what platform that version is on?). You can ignore all of it and just say that because we're "PSX Extreme," there's a bias. Believe what you want.

But please don't make the assumptions that make us absolutely CRAZY. We work hard to produce a site for PlayStation fans. This is NOT synonymous with only focusing on all the positive and ignoring the negative in regards to that brand. Maybe if you read a bit more rather than merely assumed, you'd know this.

In fact, I even said you guys were one of the websites that actually was fair when it came to admitting faults of exclusives and giving sound advice as to which multiplat version to go with.

ALL I was trying to say was this site leans towards the PS3 side of the aisle. Take it how you want and remain "champion of the boards" by "smacking me down" "ftw!", but what I said was not an insult and it still isn't.

I read this website every day, post on this site almost every day, and I recommend the site all the time. Trust me, I have read plenty to know that you guys favor PS3 games without compromising your integrity. If I really thought you were not fair in your reporting, why would I come to this website daily, let alone, sign up for a username and post on various boards? I guess I should post a disclaimer stating that that comment in no way implies that you will be mislead, lied to, or unfairly treated by the reviews given here. Would that help?

But when you go and add that we hold a PS3 bias, that sort of rings loudly in my ears. It basically means that while we're "fair," we're also going to harbor a bias that other sites don't have.

That's what I take issue with. And you have to remember, it's a touchy subject for us...it seems like everyone unfamiliar with PSXE automatically makes snap assumptions that have never been true. No it's not the score, (I don't tend to pay attention to those) it is how short the game is. I know it will be an insanely awesome 10 hours but I have to budget carefully so this month FFXIII gets my money because I think it looks brilliant and will take up lots of time. Still stoked for this game but I am a patient guy.

Hey Jawkn, thanks for your input. My next question was going to be, "Hey Jawknee, what games do you pay $60 for?", but you had perfect timing! (And btw, I never said anything was wrong with YOUR logic. Your logic was not the same as Pirate's.)

Pirate, I can definitely see how that would be reason to hold out on buying a game like Halo ODST. I'm a big Halo fan, but that was a little much. With GOW3, how long do you think it should have been to warrant a full-price purchase?

That's actually a tricky question because I'm not sure I would want to play a God of War game for much longer than 15 hours or so because it would feel drawn out and repetitive.

It isn't that I am dissapointed with the length it is right around what I had expected but it just isn't the type of game I buy day one.

$40.00? I can respect that.Problem is games that drop in price fast usually drop for a reason. Killzone 2 is still 60 bux just like Resistance 2 and several other oler games. GOW3 will be $60.00 for a while. Hell, the next installment might be out before the price drops on this. 60 bux for the chance to take down GODS is worth it n my book especially with uncompressed audio and video and beautiful HD graphics. Epic squared review Arnold. I'm thinking those platforming problems are just unavoidable for some reason. You get them in any GOW style game, it's like they can't be avoided. I've encountered many a game that can't handle voices properly as well, but those two things are hardly a deal breaker.

Cool review. I've read several reviews of GoWIII now. Although I can say with certainty that this is not a game for me, it does sound like it's a tour de force for the PS3. I'm not sure that the mentioned duration is as much a negative as some are perceiving it as, I haven't seen that as a point of complaint in other reviews.

One question that does come to mind though is the control issue that Arnold mentioned. It sounded quite annoying and yet the game got 10/10 for gameplay. Was the rest of the game play and control so good that it compensated for the faulty play that you noted Arnold?

Wait a minute, wth? Are you people seriously complaining about the games length? 1. The length depends on how long your playing the game and how skilled you are. If you pop it in and play nonstop of course its going to be short. Also if you go through every part swatting the enemies left and right, you'll get to the end in no time. All these things varies the gameplay time. I personally am going to have FFXIII to take up some of my PS3 time along with GoW3 and then I still have BC2 with its beautiful online play(eh are the servers up yet), that and I get a kick out of MW2. But like I was saying, the game time depends on what you do. You can suck like hell and finish the game in 48 hrs XD. Plus with all the scenes and story telling most of you probably will be going crazy rushing for the conclusion to this masterpiece of a series.

Well, I'll be the first to admit I am biased. I am very biased. PS3 has uncompressed video AND audio. Blu ray over those XBOX hd disks and everyone knows that, that's why Blu ray won the battle. Also, how many people were affected by the red ring problem XBOX owners were having? I got rid of my original PS3 SOLELY to get a slim version and the only problem I have ever had was for one day with the whole clock thing so I would think it's a better built console based on that. I don't think any of this is subjective. PS3 rocks and the XBOX can kick rocks.

Condemned, you are the perfect example of someone who misses out on a LOT of awesome experiences because of silly grudges. Not enough people give credit to the 360 for doing the things it does. If the 360 is such a crappy console, why does it continue to sell just as much (sometimes more, sometimes less) as the PS3 on a monthly basis? I don't have a problem with your actual choice of the PS3 over the 360, it's a great console and it does it's own thing well, but to basically say the 360 isn't good for anything is just ignorant. Grow up.

If you want it to be longer, don't use any FAQs and play it on Hard the first time. GOWI and II hold a special place in my heart, different than DMC and NG in combat, but overall a better game IMO (tho I love both!).

I remember letting my friend borrow the first when it came out and then hearing him latter go on about how great the gameplay was or the storylines. GOW3 will be a 10 to me, so much so that I actually forked out the extra $$ for the Ultimate Edition, the first time I ever have for a game!

Ok, So so far I can gather it must really suck to own a PS3. I mean, who wants a console with superior hardware with a superior reliability rating or a console with more exclusive titles that also plays bluray movies and allows you to play online for free, download movies and game demos or ps1 games???? I mean I can't find a single reason to pick up FF13 on PS3, it even looks better on sony's machine, so ps3 must suck. As for GOWIII eh, it must just be overrated. Gran Turismo 5 isn't as good as forza either... im just gonna stick with my 360 because "it is better, because I say so, plus I enjoy having it sent back and fixed twice a year." (-;

piratedrunk I haven't seen Killzone 2 or Resistance 2 that cheap anywhere. If you go to BestBuy.com they are both $59.95 right now and that's what I based my earlier comment on. Also Walmart and Target all have them same prices but yeah they are plenty of places to get them cheaper. I have never played Killzone 2 but I am seriously considering it. I just got the email that my copy of FF13 and collectors guide have shipped and I bet I get them same time GOW3 comes out which will be a store pickup but I certainly will be playing GOW 3 first without a doubt.
I get my GOW3 fix and my Clash of the Titans fix soon when it hits the theaters.

Japan is cold and rainy today, but my japanese girlfriend makes me forget this;-)

By the way, I`m from Germany.
We love the Playstation 3, and last time I checked it outsold the XBOX 360 6 to 1.
And when Gran Turismo 5 will be released before Christmas, I think the gap will become even bigger,
because we all love cars as well;-)

Hello Ben and Arnold,

I finally joined the community. Your site is really great, and seems to be one of the last unbiased places for PS3-fans around. After some of the sh** written about God of War 3, I finally decided to abandon all this hypocrite commercial sites forever. They just destroy the fun videogames should all be about.
Of course every person has it`s own opinion, but I just can`t understand the critisicm for "the same as before" when this sh**-sites praise every shooter on earth like it was something new and never seen before. Every genre has it`s elements, this is like
saying Karate isn`t innovative because you use your hands and feeds to fight, and we have seen this before with Kung Fu...
Anyway, I know this site and it`s community is great.
And I will get my newsfix here from now on.
Continue the great work!
I can`t wait for GOW3,
but unfortunately here in Japan I have to wait until march 25.
I`ll wait paitiently...)

I'm so pumped to see the great score up there. I knew that I was going to buy this game no matter what the scores were like, but this just makes me all the more excited.

I'm freaking out. One week to go Jed, just one week...
At least I have time to finish another run through of GoW 2.

If they already have a patch ready for the sound of the voices, I'll bet they also have a fix for the control problems, as far as opening up chests goes.

First off, I'd like to throw a big thank you to Arnold for the awesome review.

Next I'd like to say a few things about length, cost, and the apparent debate over which is more important.

I personally can see both sides of the fence. Some of you have the money to buy every game you want, day 1, no questions asked. For those of you who can, congratulations, seriously, I'm happy that you make that kind of money. What you must understand tho is that some people cannot afford a day 1 purchase on all games and must decide which one they will choose.

As far as length, while 8-10 hours is perfectly healthy for this type of game, if you consider that some people are trying to choose between Gowiii and ffxiii because they can only afford 1 or the other right now, then considering length of play should perhaps be an issue. According to reviews both will be highly worth the purchase, but for those who can only buy say, 1 game per month, ffxiii would be a choice that makes more sense.

I personally plan on getting gowiii, but not right away. I grew up in a house without video games and so I have yet to play any of them. I plan on purchasing and playing the hd collection and then buying and playing gowiii. However all of this will only take place once I have the money. The last game I bought was white knight chronicles and I won't be able to afford another game for a few more weeks.

So all I'm saying is that some of us have had to learn to be patient, to wait until a game costs less. I'm not saying that gowiii isn't worth the $60 price tag, just that I can afford to be patient and wait until it is cheaper.

Remember patience is something that some of us are forced to learn, but I'm willing to wait for a good deal in order to make gowiii all the more sweeter in the end.

if you think this looks good wait till you see war devil!
1080P, 60FPS HDR lighting and there are suppose to be enemies in there to make cronos the titan look like a ant.
cant wait till E3 theres suppose to be a massive blow out there.
only time will tell.

back on track with the sound issue i thought i was going mad, i thought i was the only one that noticed that.
i HATE! it when games do that.
i do most of my gaming late at night and because of where i live i have to have the speakers low so with most games i get pissed because i cant hear what the ^%$# is being said.
the dialogue is always way lower than the sound effects, killzone 2 for example id be in game blowing fools. than come cut scene id have to scramble quickly for the remote so i can turn the speakers up so i can hear whats being said.
if i can hear whats happening in game at a certain volume than i should be able to hear the dialogue too.
nothing more annoying than having to scramble for the remote to turn the volume up, than turn it down once cut scene ends and rinse and repeat.
makes me want to turn the game off early and play it later when i dont have to have the speakers so low.

@Ben and Arnold
A bit off-topic: but can the PSX site have some sort of tabular details of all review games with their review scores? Like, If i want to view all the game with respect to scores? Because for future PSX fans, it'd be much easier so that they see up front that "Hey, MGS4, Heavy Rain and God of War III got DAMN high scores! Let's get those games." It's pretty tedious to check each and every one of the games just to see the score. Just my two cents :)

On-topic: length isn't supposed to be tied to quality. MGS4 and Uncharted 2 left a lasting great taste on my mouth that I couldn't shrug..well... up until now :)

Why are other reviewers bashing this game for giving fans what they want. If you are following the reviews for GOWIII, alot of sites are bashing it for following the same formula as the past. Last I checked, every sequel is like the game before it, with little or no innovation. I bet the next Batman game will do nothing to improve on its successful formula and reviewers will be pissed, not realizing they are giving the fans what they desire. Reviewers, not gamers, complain about originality and innovation, but really, how much can you do inside of a genre that is over the top, and this goes for any genre. Shooters have been around forever, but no one is complaining and they are flooding the market like rats. GOW III seems to be just like the rest in the series (a brillant series), but of course PS3 is pushing it and the bias in reviewers come out. I am not talking about Ben or Arnold, but those sites, you know the websites with "bias" reviewers posting high grade reviews with negative unnecassary commentary towards GOW III(example is I?N). I am far from a PS3 fanboy (hate fanboy, but I love my PS3), but I am a fair person and I can definitely tell when someone is producing information to fullfil their hidden agenda. For every big name game that has come out (PS3, Xbox 360, mulitplatform), I have read about 20+ reviews for each game from certified sites. What I seem to come across, which I know PSX exects and this community haved noticed, are PS3 exclusives can get high scores, but get torn apart in reviews for things other games are doing or are not doing (weird). Multiplats gets second chances and reviewers turn theri heads and praise everything good about an Xbox exclusive without pointing out the misteps. The only sites that seem to be fair on a consistent basis is Gamespot, Eurogamer, GameInformer, and IGN. This may sound like 'fanboyism', but I am pointing out unfairness towards the PS3 hardware and software that I notice. Nothing wrong with dowing a game, but if you are going to do it to one game, you have to do it too them all. (Guess that started is Bioshock 2). Any, great review and this is definitely a day one purchase for someone who knows what they are going to get. Like the fan scream, never change a winning formula. This seems to be the trend with the new FF, which I will be picking up too, though I have never played one these games, so I don't really know what I will be missing, but I can understand why fans and Ben are dissappointed with the game even though it seems like it is good.

Everyone, don't be mad at me, but I need to get this off my chest. So I'm 6 hrs into GOWIII on Titan mode and the difficulty is a problem. Normal is too easy and hard is relentless. Kratos takes damage too easily on this difficulty. The challenge becomes drastic from one difficulty to another, they need find a difficulty in between these because neither one fits my preference right now. The story hasn't picked up yet, but from what I have seen, the story isn't deep enough for my taste, not what I was expecting. They should have told the story like they did in GOWI, that was classic. I don't like the Greek Mythology-like pass cut scenes, nice for artistic touch, but not what I want to see. Also the graphics sometimes appear to look good and in other instances, they appear average at best. Also, the fixed camera is annoying because during most fights, if I dodge in the wrong direction, enemies invade the TV screen and bam...cheap death. Nothing about this game feels next generation besides the graphics, beside that, I am playing the third game that didn't come with the collection. On top of that, nothing after the intro of this game has blown me away, well except one boss fight, my only one outside of the first boss. Of course I haven't finished GOWIII, so my opinion might change, but as for now, it hard to place GOWIII as one of my favorite games or as the best in the series, but hey I have to just get used to playing this type of game again because I hated Batman AA and now I love it like nothing else. I just hope the story picks up because all this killing with no substance is getting old very fast.

Okay, now that I am done with GOWIII, I can say this game is fun, but the story was just told awful. The pieces for a great story were there, but Santa Monica didn't create an authenthic emotional experience. Come on, this is the end of Krato's tell, at least give him a send off like MGS did Snake. Krato's ends his bloodlust career on a low point. $60 for this game is just too much now that I am done. I can honestly say that Bayonetta story, not gameplay, was more enjoyable, not saying Bayonetta had a great story, but it was very interesting and told in a fashion like GOWI. I wished GOWIII was story focused like GOWI. Santa Monica took Greek Mythology and used it as a backdrop to Kratos' rage instead of making it have a huge impact on the games storytelling. Man, I am just dissappionted in this game. Picking up a Xbox 360 tomorrow for Mass Effet 2, maybe that will satisfy my story immersion thirst.

I think the story is just as epic as in the other two. Besides, Gaia told the story in I and II so they had to change that in this one.

But yeah, the end is great. And that is why IGN gave it a 9.3. I think they didn't understand the end. It's very deep and suprising. It is an end that the trilogy deserves.

playing it now for the first time. completely blown away by the graphic detail (just look at the Gorgon's tail!). only complaint is that it clings to its legacy too much and doesn't take many chances. that being said, it's modus operadi is 'epic' and it does that like no other game.
