Alpha Protocol Review
We really enjoy the stories of persevering studios, those that managed to work through a series of setbacks and delays to eventually provide gamers with a polished and appreciated product. You will often hear about these feel-good results for years after the embattled developer releases an impressive title, but the failures fade into obscurity. Sadly, Alpha Protocol falls into the latter category. We’ve been waiting on Obsidian’s “espionage/RPG” for quite a long time and on the surface, the concept and premise were both very promising. The apparent goal was to expand on the sci-fi, plot-based structure of an epic like Mass Effect, and then combine this with the covert spy atmosphere of James Bond. Sounds quite appealing, no? Well, if you can somehow find a way to overlook the mediocre gameplay so as to enjoy the storyline, you might just be able to work your way through Alpha Protocol. …but it’s far more likely that the glaring flaws and severe lack of refinement will prove far too disappointing and frustrating.
The graphics vie with the gameplay for the dubious honor of being called the worst part of the adventure. These visuals very much remind me of a PC game from about a decade ago. It’s very bland and stark; far too much of the environment is merely painted in, the entire atmosphere feels lifeless and decidedly devoid of intricate detail, and the animations can be stiff and jerky. There are a myriad of technical issues as well, including major clipping, silly collision detection issues (has anyone caught on to the fact that PC-based software, or software from PC-oriented devs, seems to suffer from this one significant flaw more than anything else?), and boring, generic effects. We can interact with almost nothing in the immediate vicinity; level design is standard and rarely allows for much in the way of exploration/approach ingenuity, and when up close and personal, most everything fails the critical inspection. I suppose the one highlight might be some solid face detailing and animation, but beyond that, it’s just ugly.
The sound is a bit better, mostly due to some decent voice acting and a soundtrack that is fitting yet repetitive and uninspired. There is a great deal of talking, so that can be a benefit; the main character, Michael Thornton, sounds all right and there are a few other characters who sound quite genuine and realistic. Unfortunately, they put little to no effort in giving us a musical score that really enhances our immersion; it’s appropriate, yes, but it’s nowhere near prominent enough. And the big technical problem focuses on the terrible balance issue: music and effects can be all over the place; one minute, one greatly overrides the other and the next, it’s vice versa. It’s just another example of the buggy nature of this lackluster role-playing experience, and it even seemed to get worse the more I played. There are plenty of different weapons but far too many sound exactly alike, some of your skills and abilities don’t receive any help from accompanying effects that can often disappear entirely, and overall, the graphics and sound are well below par.
If Obsidian had still come through in regards to the gameplay, we could’ve overlooked at least a few of the visual and audio shortcomings. Besides, even if there are a few problems with particular elements of the gameplay, maybe we could’ve advised you to simply avoid sneaking and treat it like a third-person shooter. After all, the entire purpose of Alpha Protocol is to promote choice and freedom: you can choose the type of operative you will be, you can distribute experience points however you see fit, and even better, there are literally hundreds of different ways to interact with those you meet. The latter feature is by far the most attractive part of the game but before we get to that, we have to address the serious issues that plague the general mechanics. Sure, you can choose to be a Soldier and specialize in weaponry and explosive combat tactics, or you can stick to the shadows and enhance your stealth and gadgetry knowledge. But either way, you end up with a mostly poor setup; i.e., it’s either a dreadfully mediocre Splinter Cell or it’s a dreadfully mediocre third-person shooter.
Let’s take my experience as an example (and I guess you kinda have to): being a fan of games like Splinter Cell, I really wanted to create a Field Agent – “an intelligence specialist” who excels in “both stealth and infiltration” – with a special emphasis on shadowy, deadly effectiveness. For the record, your other options are the aforementioned Soldier, Tech Specialist (“mastery over computers and electronics”), and Freelancer (“an independent contractor who has chosen his own way”). But anyway, back to my quest. So one of the first things I do is sneak up behind a foe and perform a takedown with the simple press of a button. That was kinda cool. I noticed that snapping into and out of cover was a little jerky and erratic, but I figured it would suffice. Than I went to shoot an enemy with my tranquilizer dart and immediately encountered the first major flaw; the aiming reticle was trained directly on his upper back and I missed. Worse yet, he somehow knew I was firing at him and he turned and attacked. The next strike came when I nailed a dude with my dart when he was just inside a doorway… He collapsed, the door inexplicably closed, and when I opened it, the body was gone.
You don’t even have the option of carrying bodies out of the sight of other roving enemies, and that sight scope is all sorts of screwy. Sometimes, they’ll see a body from a ridiculous distance and other times, they’ll fail to notice when their felled comrade is right nearby. And no matter how you build your character, you never have access to some of the really cool gadgets you often see in stealth-based adventures. It got exceedingly boring just sneaking up behind people and taking them down, only to return to the shadows, rinse and repeat. So I tried the straightforward approach and started over with the intention of attacking the game as a third-person shooter. Okay, so more collision detection issues – regardless of the weapon I have equipped – and overall, just a lame, generic shooting mechanic that gets tiresome within the hour. It really seems as if there’s a lot of inherent depth; there are plenty of available skills and tools, for instance, but none of them really seem to add any flash or flavor.
Then there are the downright awful mini-mechanics used for hacking computers, bypassing alarm systems, and picking locks. Okay, that last one isn’t too bad; you just carefully hold the R2 button so the pins line up and then hit the L2 button to snap them into place. That’s just fine, I suppose. But the other two…holy God. To hack a computer, you have to stare at a screen of blinking code and somehow manage to find the small group of letters and numbers that match a designated string before time runs out. And, you have to do it twice. Then there’s cutting circuits for bypassing alarms; this requires you to trace a circuit to the outer edge, where you’d cut the wire by pressing a button. It sounds easy, but you have to cut each in order and tracing the maze-like circuit out of the box with your eyes is a ridiculous chore; the circuits all blend together and again, it’s timed. It’s just a mess. I also noticed that certain gadgets you could utilize didn’t function effectively or reliably.
Like I said earlier, the only good part is the fact that you can adopt different “stances” when dealing with other characters. In certain situations, you are given the opportunity to respond and you can choose from a variety of options, including Professional, Aggressive, and Suave. Depending on how you respond, the character will say something different and this does indeed directly affect the storyline. Furthermore, you can conduct research on any character you will interact with, thereby allowing you to figure out what approach would work best with them. There are even times when you can perform an action during a conversation to take the other person by surprise. Due to the large number of times you select a stance, there are any number of branching possibilities, and the many characters can respond to you in a bunch of different ways. The only downside is that you have a certain amount of time to pick a stance, which wouldn’t be so bad, but the time bar starts counting down before the character has even finished their statement or question. This leads to times when you have mere seconds to pick a stance once you’ve heard everything you need to hear.
But hey, it works out well. It’s really a blessing because it’s the only thing that kept me playing for a while. Eventually, though, all the severe problems began to pile up and infect most every movement I made. Nothing seems catastrophically bad but at the same time, nothing seems right, either. This game feels and looks very, very outdated and anyone who plays it will recall many games that did something better; we’ve seen far better role-playing, action, and stealth mechanics and in all honesty, I doubt this game would’ve been considered anything special even four or five years ago. We’ve already heard bad things about the development process and in the end, this is one project that should’ve been nixed. I just can’t figure out why someone somewhere didn’t stand up and say this would bomb…I mean, it’s painfully obvious. I just don’t get it.

Game looks like they designed the main characters face and then made everything else as quickly as they possibly could. All the background is flat and smooth with no texture at all as is most of the clothing and pretty much everything other than the characters face.
People think james bond can sound cheesy, this game sounded like it was written by a drunken james bond wanna be. 5.8 is pretty low, but I think maybe Ben's niceties and politeness might be shining thru. lol.

It was a good concept but concepts don't always translate into equal execution.
Maybe they should have axed this game, maybe they should have come out and said they were going to put it on an undetermined hiatus while they rethought the design portion. Hell, maybe they should have enlisted the help of a different studio or designer to give pointers and guidance.
Whatever they should have done and should have made is irrelevant now and I guess we all see what we are left with, crap.

"no matter how good red dead redemption is, it has absolutely NO chance of getting GOTY this year.
ME2, GOW3, heavy rain, GT5, agent, LA Noire, the last guardian, true crime, mafia 2, crysis 2, crackdown 2, alan wake (which im playing now, AND LOVING!!!!!!!!!!), splinter cell conviction, assassins creed brotherhood, medal of honor, COD black ops, and god knows how many others.
all have a much better chance of getting GOTY.
though i have only heard really good things about it, besides its repetitiveness which is no surprise since it is a R* title.
i got my PSM3 june edition in yesterday and they gave it a 9.5 not bad there normally really hard markers!!!
but than, hey, no one ever thought GTAIV would of got GOTY and it did.
almost every single title that gets GOTY simply does not deserve it!
COD MW over uncharted AND bioshock?
really????????????
come on, both uncharted and bioshock are 100000000000 times better than COD MW!
Agree with this comment 1 up, 9 down Disagree with this comment"
@ TEG, your wrong because i buy and play just about everything Nintendo as well. You have displayed time and time again that your tastes like _________ are either odd or at worst poor so i don't really care what your opinion is. not trying to be rude but its the truth. Once again your comment is incoherent and void of substance.
BTW, PMSing i am not. your the one who's butthurt and typing in all caps like so raving lunatic. ;)

if you bothered to read any of my other posts instead of just selecting the ones that suit yourself, you would know i have not agreed with GOTY awards for ages.
does MW really deserve GOTY over uncharted or bioshock?

you make it sound like there wanted weapons of fate territory, there no where near that bad.
anyway, the biggest fault with alpha protocol and this is really what made the game fell apart is the developers did not know when to stop adding things.
just like the developer said in that interview sega kept changing the requirements of the game, that gave them no time to polish what was already f*cked.
what happens when you add sh*t on top of sh*t on top of sh*t on top of sh*t?
you need to know when to say enough is enough, remove what does not work and refine and polish what does work.
along with the development teams producer again as one of the devs said in that article he thought he was god and was adding things that were crap and he would not listen to anyone.
i know how that feels my ex boss was like that, he could turn out a piece of sh*t and try to convince you its gold. as the simpsons said "homer dont try to sell me a out house and tell me its a taj mahal!"
the game really needs focus, it does not know what it wants to be. all good games need to know what there requirements are.
before you go into production you need to know what you want your game to achieve, you need to have a set of goals you want to reach.
like naughty dog said they wanted uncharted 2 to be a hollywood blockbuster summer movie and it was.
you cant make a game a jack of all trades you just cant because than it ends up being crap.
you need to make a game thats jack of few trades master of one.
just like cars you cant make a car to be a GT car, a luxury car, a cruiser, a nimble sports car and the words fastest car all rolled into one.
you have to choose one or the other, maybe a mix.
but you cant make say the worlds fastest car, but than make it also the worlds most luxurious because that adds weight and it would handle like a couch on wheels!
that is what went wrong with alpha protocol they tried to do everything, you just cant, you need to set one goal master that than set another.
not set a million goals because by the time your done setting them oops we have no time to master any of them.
if they sat down and said ok we want to make a stealth RPG and thats it, work off that and refine it than alpha protocol could of been in the running for GOTY.
i truly believe that because it combines 3 of the best things i love in games and we very rarely see.
1 consequences. many games say everything you do changes the story (cough heavy rain) but how many actually deliver?
2 stealth. again how many stealth games do we see?
i can count the amount of stealth games we have had this gen on one hand!
3 story and character development. very very few games actually have a deep interesting story, and very fewer games actually have character development.
what i mean by that is not only your character but your allies and enemies change there personality, their views change throughout the game depending on your choices.
very few games actually deliver on that.
alpha protocol does though, and for that i have to thank obsidian for delivering on what so many developers have promised but failed to deliver on.
alpha protocol may be a flawed game technically and o boy is it, but at least it does one thing very few games do. revolutionize the industry, give us something we have not seen yet and if you cant appreciate that than i feel sorry for you.'
a little more spit and polish, a little more control and focus and this could of really been a great game, but at least we finally have a game that delivers on that consequences promise.
up until now no game has done that so thank you obsidian for that.
it looks like we have a first, sega have FINALLY!!! released a decent (not good but decent) next gen game.............. ABOUT TIME IT ONLY TOOK THEM 4 FU*KING YEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't believe that Ben didn't even talk about how awesome the weapon customization is in this game. It's one of the most in depth system in any game.

sure the games stuffed in so many ways, but at least there trying to give us something different.
alpha protocol had allot of potential it just was screwed up by one egotistical (remind you of anyone?) prick and sega constantly changing the book on them.

They TRIED to take it to another level and that didn't really work and, oh yes, the foundation it's built upon SUCKS. You have to start realizing what makes for a good game, not just what you THINK makes for a good game.

GTAIV had these choices do i kill this guy or do i let him go but that really changed absolutely nothing.
same as heavy rain, in the store if you get caught but dont get killed than what changes?
nothing.
alpha protocol is the first game i have ever played that makes me think about things before i do them, or say them.
plus not to mention this is really the first decent stealth game we have gotten this gen, the only half decent one besides this was 3 years ago splinter cell double agent.
yes stealth games have been done better, but they were all released on the ps2.
im not saying its a fantastic game, that much is obvious.
im just saying its much better than what you make it out to sound.
its nice to see a developer try to do something new and not follow the flock of sheep, i think they should be thanked for that not condemned.
keep going the way your going and were going to end up with nothing but FPS because developers will be too scared to stray away from the norm.

i have not put up a user review on this because i have not finished it yet i dont believe on reviewing games i have not finished.
and no a 6 is not a good score, a 6 is what most sites gave rouge warrior or the avatar.
those were extremely bad games, alpha protocol is no where near as bad as those.
anything below a 7 is poor, anything below a 5 is unplayable sh*t.
this deserves at least a 6.5 maybe 7.

The dialogue is fun and actually impacts your game and characters for the rest of the game. This they do way better than ME2. Sneaking is "broken" until you level it up, remember this is an RPG people. The combat in this game is like ME1 remember how your reticle could be on the enemy and you would still miss point blank? Yeah probably not because you over looked that games bugs and poor combat for some fantastic reason, Allegiance to Bioware perhaps?
Anyway I strongly recommend anyone who was interested in this game at least rented it.
This is the first review from this site I have really really disagreed on.

Collision detection issues is always a flaw. I wouldn't ignore it in Mass Effect, either, and as I said in the review, it seems to hit PC-related software very hard.
At no point does this game feel like anything besides a mediocre version of far better games that focused on one particular element and excelled. Read reviews from GameSpot or IGN if you want more explanation.

I have read several reviews, I understand that you have an opinion and that is obviously fine, but I feel like that this review is discouraging a lot of people from playing and possibly enjoying this game.
I honestly haven't noticed the sneaking being broken because of the A.I. Stealth games tend to have crappy A.I. Period.
The A.I. in the Tenchu games, most splinter cell games(I havent played conviction), Assassins Creed, and my favourite the Metal Gear series are usually retarded. I feel like yeah the A.I. In AP can be really really really bad but only a little worse than the games mentioned above.
So many people are enjoying this game its not GOTY not even close but, I as well as a lot of other people am having fun with it. I still say its about a 7 and definitely worth a rent if you were interested in it at one point.
This is just my opinion I only say this because I usually agree with you Ben. This is however the first time I've ever posted =)
