Duke Nukem Forever Review
They once called it “Did Not Finish.” Now I ardently wish it hadn’t. Just a few days back, I questioned the critic reception, wondering if they were taking the game too seriously; if reviewers had forgotten the primary focus of a game like Duke Nukem Forever. It’s shameless, lewd, crude, and oh so cheesy, and that’s precisely the point. And if DNF was all those things and tons o’ fun, I would’ve been satisfied. Heck, I would’ve been thrilled. But now I’m so annoyed and disappointed I can hardly see straight enough to type this review; the game is ugly, tedious, monotonous, and poorly designed. A few bright spots just aren’t enough.
I’m fairly certain most any game produced in the past three or four years looks better than DNF. Resistance: Fall of Man is technically superior in every possible way, and that was a PS3 launch title. The animations are jerky and even broken in some areas (I’ll explain below), the overall level design is drab and uninteresting, and the environments are clearly from 2005. The only bright spot lies in the enemies and bosses, all of which are actually decent and appropriately intimidating. Those nasty foes often stand out against the stark, technically mediocre backdrops, but the special effects do little to assist. A fair descriptive word? “Blech.”
The sound is no better, even if you accept the fact that Duke is supposed to sound that way. I was perfectly willing to laugh at his cheeseball outdated voice – and I did laugh at his voice when shrunk; it’s hilarious – but the other voice performances are equally painful and I can’t very well give them a free pass. The soundtrack might be good, but I rarely heard it as the balance was always way off. Effects would override voices and music, the soundtrack would often drop out entirely, and the audio effects lacked impact. The latter is a serious issue, too, because we needed that to enhance the atmosphere. Technically overall: poor.
But I repeat- none of that would’ve mattered too much had the gameplay been tight and entertaining. Well, having such lackluster sound would’ve hurt but truthfully, I could’ve dealt with the archaic visual presentation, provided the thrills were there. All I really wanted was a classic run ‘n gun adventure with that Duke-ish attitude we’ve so missed over the years. Plus, so many shooters are so realistic these days; it’s all about cover and strategy. We really haven’t seen a true blue run ‘n gunner since the days of Serious Sam (although Bulletstorm was close). All I wanted was testosterone-fueled bad-assery with endless attitude.
Was that too much to ask? Apparently, it was. The game starts terribly and it’s a good thing I played for a while; otherwise, the score would’ve been even lower. They kick off with several lame gimmicks, which includes pissing in a urinal, getting a blowjob from a pair of sluts dressed as schoolgirls, and punching aliens in the head (before you get any firearms). There’s also a big boss fight in a football stadium, after which you kick a field goal with the beast’s severed head. Now, given the right surroundings and style, this would fit; it’s very Duke-like in nature. But then I started moving around.
At its core, the movement itself isn’t bad at all. It’s relatively smooth, the jumping seems normal, and maneuverability isn’t really an issue. It’s the rest of it: the enemies are stupid and cheap at the same time, even the biggest weapons lack all semblance of power (not in their performance but in how they sound), the poor level design is cut straight from a very, very old game, and the story is just plain stupid. I’d give the storyline a free pass, too, if only there had been anything even remotely amusing about the plot. Make it stupid; go right ahead. But at least make me laugh. At least let me say, “hellz yes, gonna kick all sorts of ass!”
Sadly, it’s just terribly put together. I had to load over 4 gigs worth of data onto my hard drive and the loading times are still absurdly long. What’s worse, I had to sit and watch that loading screen every time I died, which was frequent and frustrating. The pig enemies that rush you can pin you in a corner and never let you leave, and oh yes, sidestepping isn’t possible in cramped areas. They’ll just home in on you no matter what. If they rush straight at you, you can grab them by the horns and snap their neck by pressing the X button quickly, but the amount of damage you suffer in that time means you’ll probably be dead in the next few seconds.
The close and confined areas are the worst and unfortunately, that’s how the game starts. Once I got outside, things got a little better, as I finally got to move around a bit and sample new weapons. There was one good boss fight that involved a massive alien and a rocket launcher, which I liked, and I also enjoyed smashing an alien-infested concrete wall with a wrecking ball. And yes, there is a fair amount of running and gunning that feels very old-school, but as you constantly feel at a disadvantage, it’s often more about survival than kicking butt. Because just about everything seems stronger than Duke, his coolness factor drops like crazy.
Lastly, the glitches, hitches and miscues are borderline comical. If one of those enemies that rush you misses, he’ll often – not occasionally, often – freeze in place against a wall or even in mid-air. The jetpack-enhanced enemies will sometimes get stuck, too; it’s as if they hit an invisible barrier and just started glitching in place. Collision detection is extraordinarily iffy and Duke’s abilities are barely even abilities. He can take steroids to increase his melee power, which is almost entirely useless beyond the first few hours, and he can drink a beer, which somehow makes him tougher. Woozy, but tougher. That proved useful at times, though.
There’s also Duke vision, which is basically a blue version of night vision. Other than that, there isn’t much to talk about. There are some driving sections, which aren’t horrendous but they drag on far too long and the controls are just too loose. The entire game just feels like a chore, and one that isn’t inundated with lots of offensive goodness (offensive stuff can be “good” in certain situations). I desperately wanted to love the game because I love the character, and I fought to enjoy myself. I’m glad I played longer than I had intended because things did get better. But eventually, I lost the fight. The less said about the multiplayer the better. Tragically, after over 13 years, the end result is a mess.
Duke Nukem Forever will likely go down in history as one of the biggest disappointments ever. For the record, had Gearbox simply given us a solid old-fashioned shooter with all those retarded one-liners and strippers and gore that made the series great, I would’ve enjoyed it thoroughly. I would’ve defended it like crazy. But there’s just nothing to defend here; those who think there is are suffering from an over-abundance of nostalgic influence. Nobody wanted to love DNF more than me but I just couldn’t get any enjoyment out of it. The sad part is, Duke really deserves a great game. Maybe someday it’ll happen.
The Good: Attitude isn’t too far off. Some diversity, although gimmick-related. Decent enemy design and a few cool bosses.
The Bad: Terrible technical presentation, loaded with glitches and errors. Soundtrack and effects are seriously lacking. Control is loose. Duke is just way too weak. Poor level design. Weapons have no punch.
The Ugly: “Damnit. Duke didn’t deserve this.”

"Oooh it's really ugly, but no matter I'm not here for the graphics"
"'How was the game Duke? was it good? Well, after twelve years in development, it better f*cking be' he he, that was good'
"'Mary and Kate Holsome', classic Duke!"
And then it all went downhill... and those are like the first five minutes of the game, not counting installation and loading time... So yeah, I wanted to cry too... Duke Nukem 3D and Final Fantasy VII were the first games I bought and replayed then like crazy, so I totally agree with you Ben, I wrestled me trying to love this game, then almost killed me trying to like it, but I just couldn't do it..
sigh...

I admit it is a disappointment, but I'm enjoying the 90s play style. Still, it's pretty hard to mess up a Duke game and somehow Gearbox has done it. Ultimately what holds it back is the attempts to mix old and new, it should just be old.
Nevermind that though, it's still plenty fun and I'm enjoying particular parts a lot. Duke himself is still awesome and I hope this game somehow warrants a true next gen production and delivers what DNF couldn't.

There are plenty of flaws but the one liners and crude acts save it. Little things like the bit with the crane (and the shipping crate moving before that) were enjoyable; moreso than running through yet another jungle as in recent FPSs

I'm still holding back for my review.
The game has such a history and things to touch upon, it's tough to fully review. Then you got the details i.e. pop culture references (btw there are more easter eggs and references in here than any other game ever made! Also nice detail touches aswell like the clocks in the game actually being real clocks telling the real time), gameplay variety such as shrunk and Titty City etc, etc and many weren't touched upon.
So i guess it was just that bad for you.
So yeah, my response will be my review, i guess...but, i do echo much said here...but some in a different context.
Linked to the Gearbox forums too.
Oh, btw, can you do user reviews via PS3 Browser? Don't want to type it all and have it do a Java era or something!
P.S. This is 3D Realms's game, Gearbox only got it shippable...they did nothing design wise other than polish what they could. In other words, blame 3D Realms if you don't enjoy it...or George Broussard if we're singling people out lol.

The ABC channel have done a video review with two separate scores. I think it's good for anyone still on the fence, they review it very fairly and don't repeat the trend to save face.

Oh and Bulletstorm was in now way better than this. Bulletstorm tried to be funny, but came off as funny as the Hangover, and it tried to be old school with zero charm...plus it was majorly repetitive. Just had to throw that out there.

Anyway I couldn't even bring myself to give this game a score. It is as if that game was on a different chart from the likes of uncharted. I find it just fun but no GOTY lol

The long load times are absolutely inexcusable since you've got a 4 GB install. I hate how you have to use the L1 & R1 buttons to aim and shoot; I want to use L2 & R2. I hate the Halo style weapons & health (two weapons at a time and the ego bar) in a game like this. There are times where you have no clue what you have to do and must turn to YouTube or DailyMotion for the answer. It's so archaic. And yes, the graphics are laughable.
I think Gearbox had their hands tied. George Broussard wanted "his" game and wasn't interested in something that looks and plays like something from this decade.
However, I'm continuing to slog through this game hoping for one redeeming nugget.
A lot of people have bought this regardless of the reviews. I'm glad I only rented it for a week. I'd be pissed to have paid $57 (the lowest price for the game yesterday) on Duke.
A lot of people have been mentioning Bulletstorm in their reviews, calling it the true successor to Duke Nukem. I'm starting to think about buying the game this summer now.

You know, I tried playing it like that, and it still didn't work. I don't care how many times development was stopped and restarted, if Gearbox wanted to finally release this 13 year old turd, they should have made sure it was brought up to date technologically at the least, instead of trying to rush it out and make it more half-assed than it already was/is.

I was so looking forward to this and to see a 4.4 from Ben who I highly respect as a reviewer just hurts. I hope this is not the end of Duke Nukem. There has to be a new adventure that demands more singular attention than DNF was given. Yes, I know it took forever to make originally but I feel the game itself was not given the proper development attention it so sorely needed towards the end. Especially when they are trying to merge an old product and new product together.
Duke you have been wronged and I hope you land on your feet! I would love to see Id Software, Naught Dog, Guerrilla Games or Insomniac do another Hail to the King baby some day!

not its time to solve puzzles and chew bubblegum and im all out of gum.
thats what destroyed DNF for me the most.
the bugs, poor graphics and such i can handle, but the puzzles are as entertaining as watching the grass grow!
DNF is like watching 5 minutes of your favorite show there the shooting parts, then 5 minutes of your most hated show there the platforming parts, then another 5 minutes of your most hated show there the puzzle parts.

Yeah, I think you're right, the problem is that as a PS3 owner, you don't have to settle with pretty bad, or bad, not even good... You can play pretty good to excellent games and never have to even touch a bad game nowadays. I mean, remember FFXIII? It was a good game, not great by Final Fantasy standards, but good nonetheless, and I guess you remember how much heat It got. Also, It's just not helping Duke that Infamous 2 launched almost at the same time, I mean, what are you gonna buy? the 9+ game or the 4 ish one?

Oh boy..... :| Have they been scratching their balls for 13 years?
It looks messy & it plays terribly old but I’m guessing that's for nostalgia's sake. Right?
Fans of the original Duke games will probably love it & good on you, but I will be getting my hard earned back. I don't care what the name of the game is but noone waits this long for results like this.
I hope those patient Duke fans enjoy it though, because those are the ones that have been waiting for this revival. But the best slice of nostalgia imo would be to revisit the old games instead of forking out on this “new” rehash though.

I loved Duke 3D it was fun. But I would not buy a remake. I much prefer this one that was just released. It reminds me of Duke 3D but has a new story and new stupid events. Now if you people don't like it, it's ok. But personaly I prefer new games over remakes of games I already know. Even if it has new textures it still has the same story and naration. So boring. This halfassed Duke Nukem is better than any remakes! :D All new and full of funny shit! I won't say its in my favorite games but it is hella fun.

5.5 i thinks pretty fair there are some really good parts to it, but sadly you do have to sift through allot of sh*t!
shocked to see the distribution company threatening to withhold review copies of future games just because people gave this a poor review!
how pathetic!
the game deserves the poor reviews it
received!
it would be ok if the game was pure mindless fun like its suppose to be but its not!
the game failed on all fronts!
theres 2 sides to a game, the technological side and the fun entertainment side.
technological side, well, it looks and plays like a freaking early ps3 game!
long load times even though it had a MASSIVE 30 minute HDD install!
so many bugs im convinced gearbox did not make it, i swear obsidian did!
heaps of graphical issues like pop in, screen tearing, jaggies, low resolution textures, poor frame rate.
so put simply its as technologically advanced as say haze!
then theres the MOST important thing about ANY
game, but duke especially since its never been a powerhouse, duke has always relied on the gameplay.
DNF its not fun!
its boring, frustrating and as repetitive as it could possibly be!
the shooting mechanic is really weird, never have i found it so hard to aim at enemies.
dunno if its a hit detection issue or something else, just feels really cumbersome and clumsy.
like its constantly tripping over itself!
the level design is pretty poor, it was nice to see some different environments but the way its laid out is pretty much cut and pasted throughout the game.
then theres the most infuriating part but yet the best part of the game!
the boss battles.
most infuriating because you can spend 30 minutes killing a boss, deplete all of its health all you have to do is go up and start the QTE sequence and as your running up you get hit once by a enemy and thats it 30 minutes down the drain start all over a freaking gain!
thats the thing that pissed me off the most about DNF!
dukes a freaking PUSSY!
get hit twice and your dead.
WTF?
the standard enemies the pig cops have to get hit several times to die depending what weapon obviously, but you dont?
i thought duke was a bad a$$ not a freaking pussy!
then theres the 2nd almost most disappointing
part of the game.
the weapons!
duke is known for its outrageous cool out there weapons, it was the insomniac of its day!
but in DNF, this is the most consistent complaint i have read in reviews, is the only strong enough weapon is the shotgun.
everything else feels FAR too weak!
i found myself using a shotgun all the time, i dont think i EVER dropped it in my entire playthrough!
every other weapon is far too weak, especially the ripper, in DN 3D that weapon was kick a$$ almost as strong as the shotgun!
in DNF though you need to sink 40+ bullets into a enemy with the ripper to kill them!
this is a high powered machiene gun, 15 bullets should be more then sufficient to kill a standard enemy!
not 40!
then you come to the WORST part of the game!
the f*cking puzzles and platforming!
they are so freaking boring, infuriating, just makes me want to fly out to gearbox and slap them silly!
1 thing IGN described these the best, the gunplay is ok, but theres so much filler in between, the platforming and puzzles are really poorly thought out, poorly implemented, poorly tested.
there as entertaining as watching oprah!
thats what destroyed DNF for me!
the clumsy controls, poor level design, crap graphics, bugs, all that i could ignore if the gameplay was FUN!
but its not, the gun play is ok but you have 5 minutes of watching your favorite show then 10 minutes of watching your most hated show!
i wish they cut all these stupid puzzles and platforming bits out of the game!
yea that would mean it would end up being like 5 hours, but id much rather 5 hours of my favorite show, then 5 hours of my favorite and 10 hours of my most hated!
i was expecting this to be like just cause 2.
crude cheesy poorly put together, but a hell of a laugh, and a even better good time!
a epic fail in the technological department, but pretty good, not great, but pretty good in the fun entertainment department.
DNF sadly though was a epic, epic, EPIC FAIL in ALL departments!
to be honest i think the games bloody lucky its getting the reviews it is, if it was up to me id be getting a 5.5!
this was not the most disappointing game of the year.
not even the most disappointing game of the generation!
not even the most disappointing game of the last 3 generations!
DNF will go down as not the worst, but the most disappointing game EVER MADE!
not made up until 100 years, but i bet of all freaking time!
once the world ends and games cease existing whatevers left will be looking back at this and saying that was the most disappointing thin those useless humans ever came up with!
and i thought FFXIII, RE5, GOW3 and DMC4 were disappointing!
oh well now all thats said and done, im done crying and wiping that atrocity off my mind!
yup, DNF is exactly that did not finish!
now that thats done, i have one last thing to say.........
DUKE FOR PRESIDENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
only then will he get the respect, recognition, and attention he deserves to put out a decent successor to one of all times greatest games!

Eeeeeerrrrrrrr look, maybe some of those games weren't as great as the hype made them out to be, but if you fell disappointed by those games (especially GOW3) then, as some members have told you repeatedly in the past, maybe you should get another hobby?
___________
Thursday, June 16, 2011 @ 10:53:29 AM
GOW3 for example wheres the puzzles?
wheres the brutality the series is known for?
wheres GOW3s version of the staircase of hades?
GOW1 and 2 especially 1 was such a old school styled game, it was allot like splatterhouse.
unforgivingly deliberately hard!
duke nukem 3D was so popular because of its crass humor, cool weapons, and such fun gameplay.
it did not have much platforming.
DNF is just tedious!
like all the shrink ray puzzle where you have to climb up a stair onto a table to flick a switch.
its just boring tedious crap!
or the kitchen level, what level from DN3D was like that?
they have taken what was the best part and biggest part of DN3D the shooting and made it a 3rd of the game, and somehow made it worse!
DN3D was 90% blowing sh*t up 5% collecting things and 5% platforming.
DNF thoughs closer to a 33% split each!
thats another problem with DNF, they modernized the game when they shouldent of.
but they have only done it half way.
if your going to do something, then at least do it properly!

Oh, and as for the inclusion of the blow job during the opening elements of gameplay - as mentioned in Ben's review. I have to just stop and ask why? Seriously WTF? That's just pointless obscenity. I know people will say "But Highlander, that's what the Duke is all about - pointless obscenity...". No, actually it was about pointless and over the top action gaming with a healthy dose of sexism, coarse language and sarcasm thrown in. personally, even if the rest of the game could be seen as playing like the Duke titles of old, that one inclusion of that one act renders the game out of bounds for my home.

___________
Friday, June 17, 2011 @ 10:26:31 AM
easiest play i have ever received!
getting the plat for 1 and 2 was so much harder!
as for DNF, yea they should of kept the duke the way he was.
all i wanted was DN 3D in HD, thats what i was expecting.
get rid of the modern touches like regenerative health, 2 weapon restriction, puzzles, platforming bits.
just have the game be what ALL duke games are about!
blowing sh*t up!
the catchphrase is its time to kick ass and chew bubblegum, and im all out of gum!
not its time to solve puzzles and chew gum, and im all out of gum!
it needed more of the duke humor too, he had allot of his one liners in there but nothing really made me laugh.
the boss battles where you use there nuts as a punching bag, and the mine level where your on a kart were really the only 2 bits of the game that made me laugh!
wheres the dukes witty charm?
they needed more strip club levels, you cant do much with it either.
wheres the lap dances?
they tried to change too much, thats what destroyed it!

Check it out if you're still on the fence.
After all, the most anticipated game of all time deserves that treatment!
Another thing that ain't touched upon here is the fantastic extra features you unlock, you can unlock gameplay wheels of all the DNF builds of the past! Including a development timeline, screenshots of all the builds, development team photographs, soundboards...and most of all, that thing i have missed this gen, CHEAT CODES!
Has to be mentioned because that is something that obviously is very encouraging and interesting. Took the game up a notch.

Also...you haven't played it? Yet you still call it a train wreck?
As for my enthusiasm....i haven't stated whether i enjoy it or not. I'm just balancing things out....judging from comments people still love it or are still believing. So i offer an alternative.
Lastly, if you follow scores, 50 doesn't mean train wreck, it's supposed to mean average right?

Anyways, those extra features are cool and all, but nothing that make the game better gameplay-wise, which is where a Duke game should shine. I'm glad there are cheat codes in the game, but other much better games (RDR and AC:B come to mind) have those too. So I don't know how much those will swing peoples' opinions on this game.

Duke Nukem Forever Scores Cause Take-Two Stock Slump
There’s been more fallout from the considerable savaging critics have unleashed upon Gearbox’s Duke Nukem Forever. Take-Two Interactive’s share price has fallen more than 13 percent after concern behind Duke’s reception and the lower-than-expected sales of L.A. Noire. The current share price is $14.59, down from a high of $16.88 last month. The company’s highest share price in the last five years was $27.36 on June 02, 2008.
Cowen and Company analyst Doug Creutz now believes that Take-Two’s chances to meet its full-year earnings forecasts are “significantly reduced.” He rates the stock as underperform or sell currently.

People, enjoy this game for it being a game.
And yes, I finished the game, it wasn't THAT difficult to do so...
/rant on
Gaming has become WAY too serious for some people, I know people who won't play a game because it "doesn't look real", which always has me scratching my head. Video GAMES (extra HEAVY emphasis on the word GAME)like all other "games" are meant to be FUN and ENJOYABLE, not tedious and laborious (that's called a JOB kiddos...) like a lot of people are making them out to be... "Why weren't you on-line playing XXXXX game last night???" one angry friend says to another friend "We REALLY needed you on our team!!!"... This has just gotten so ridiculous for me, it's a major reason I don't play on-line on my console and have cut down to just a few hours a month on WoW.

I think the biggest problem here is the conversion to the PS3 was the biggest fail, not the game itself. I find it to be a rather fun game to play and definitely reminds me of when I was playing Duke Nukem 3D.
Granted, the graphics were outdated, but I didn't care. I found the game fun.
