Sony: No PS4 Any Time Soon, It Would Be A "Distraction"
Contrary to any rumors you may have digested over the past few months, Sony remains firm on the subject: they're not planning to release a new console any time soon.
During an IGN interview, SCEA President Jack Tretton said to focus on a new piece of hardware right now would prove "distracting" for the company. For now, they're focus is squarely on the PS3 and the new PlayStation Vita. Said Tretton:
"Right now, we're focused on PlayStation 3, and I've got another platform (PlayStation Vita) to get out the door in seven days, so I don't want to be thinking about trying to launch new technology any time soon. I want to focus all our energy on our console business, which is really just hitting its stride, and Vita, which really deserves a dedicated push from us."
He then went on to say he wouldn't want to talk about any new console hardware this year, so the rumor that said all three next-generation systems would on display at E3 2012 appears to be false. Tretton echoes recently promoted Sony boss Kaz Hirai's statements that the PS3 is really hitting its stride, and it has plenty of life left.
Well, that's all fine by us. The PS3 could go another three or four years as far as we're concerned.

I'm 99% sure though that there will be an announcement for a next-gen Sony console next year, and that it'll launch at the same time as the new MS console. R&D on a new PS4 has definitely started a long time ago.
Looking forward to that, I want a new Playstation home console.

The thing is, Microsoft might see an opportunity at this year's E3 to steal the show with a new console. Sony sounds like it doesn't have one, and regardless of product quality, MS likes to be there first. There was one PS4 news story last year that leaves me feeling hopeful regardless. The story was that the PS4 design was essentially done, but the system was on the back burner for now as it's not needed. If that's the case, Sony may be ready to jump if MS does.

I've had the privilege of working with the PS3, as well as the 360. The 360 is definitely more accessible.
Rendering on the PS3 is a challenge.
The way memory is paged is complex.
Due to the 8 SPEs (6 if you count only the ones available to the developer) being bridged with the PPC, it requires explicitly programmed methodologies on memory hierarchy and parallel processing. That's where the bigger problems are.
The thing is, in the end you have much more freedom with the PS3, at the cost of more technical work having to be done.
Microsoft just provides a very accessible, and powerful, SDK that allows developers to focus more on the creative side rather than the technical side.
Also, the architecture on the 360 is very much like an architecture found on a PC.
Though, truth is, developers made PS3 development out to be much worse than it really is.
Still, developers are getting more comfortable as time passes, so it makes perfect sense that Sony sticks to a similar architecture if they don't want to scare off developers from the start.

Sony needs to take Microsoft head on next time so the don't fall behind again. MS has a ton of momemtum in NA...to let that go unchecked for the sake of a handheld is risky and it's putting Sony in a tough spot that will make them have to fight another UPHILL fight again. If they are smart and have indeed learned lessons this gen they will not repeat that market strategy.
In fact Sony is already on record stating it would be "undesirable" to let MS get a jump again on them again. They will be ready to go when MS launches their next system. No way they will forget the way this gen played out and what MS was able to do do them or the reasons why it happened. If Sony fans see that I'm pretty sure they see it too.

...and with that said, I think the next Xbox won't be much of an upgrade. It may have a little more oomph, but I'm not sure it'll be a huge leap. Idk though. I'm not a technical expert, and don't know all the technology available. But id like to think thats what Sony realizes and that's why they are not talking bout a PS4 right now. Because the PS3 is the future and present of the technology out there... For now. Speculation of course.

He also had an unstable mind and might have been a bit deficient (that might be the reason why Ben tolerated him for so long :P)
Guess I'll only miss the girl XD lol
Pretty much sums it up I think. His last offence was commited in this topic and we shall remember him as... (out of inspiration)

Saying M$ got ahead because they launched first and will be ahead again is the panicky jumping to conclusions answer. There are a lot of factors to think of when it comes to launching a console and I believe M$ knows they wont get as lucky next generation. Sony will learn from their mistakes and MS only has a few bebe guns compared to Sony's full arsenal of exclusives
I believe whoever has the strongest software at launch with the most hardware potential but still at a reasonable price will start off the best. However, if MS launches their console at 400, Sony damn well better do the same or cheaper!

You are underestimating the impact of the 360 becoming the "go-to" console for members of the gaming media. The head start (combined with Achievements) played a huge role in determining the bias in coverage that still persists, which has in turn no doubt affected the lemming-like behavior among teenagers.

Price, poor launch software and now that you mentioned it, M$ has done wonder's manipulating the american public and media. How else could they have barely gotten a scratch on them from the rrod fiasco and now live accounts being hacked?? Their tons and tons of money. Its absolutely unfair is what it is

said many times and say again, let developers focus more on producing quality games, NOT again forced to learn how to shift to a newer platform, which will lead to an eternal struggle of trial and error -- catch up the the new technology, and when just about to catch up, newer technology came and again need to catch up, and so forth -- and this is really annoying to me.

Btw, spotted a small grammar/spelling error: "For now, they're focus is squarely on the PS3 and the new PlayStation Vita." I believe "they're" should be "their". Just helpin' out :)

CD project red the guys who did the witcher 2 say there working on several next gen games and they expect the systems to be out 2014.
sounds about right to me, a E3 reveal next year with a late 2013, early 2014 release.
im starting to think early in the year is more likely, high priced consoles are not the things people buy for chrissy presents.
and older folk, folk their aimed at cant afford them at chrissy because they spent all their money on presents for the family.

Fine by me, I have so little free time these days that a standard setting new console would most definately be a distraction within the space of 2 years.
