Second Son's World Is "Relatable, True And Grounded"

inFamous: Second Son tops the "most-wanted" list for many current PlayStation 4 owners.

There's a damn good reason why, too. But if you don't have enough reason to anticipate Sucker Punch's upcoming PS4 exclusive, check out the latest detailed interview with game director Nate Fox.

He talks about how the team modeled the game after the real-life terrorism situation, and how we've come to suspect just about everyone. Because terrorists can look like everyday people, it's tough to trust. That's a key component in Second Son, as is the "serious choice and consequence theme." Said Fox:

"We’ve always said that the inFamous series is about an everyday guy who gets super powers and decides if he wants to use them for good or evil, and that’s still true in Second Son – except – we’ve tried even harder to make the world relatable, true and grounded so that these super powers are plausible, you believe in them. The game world does react to you. You make choices throughout the game with pretty serious consequences, so that serious choice and consequence theme is still there. You matter in that world."

As for the gameplay, Fox said they've "redesigned the control interface" for the sake of novice players. Those who aren't necessarily experts with the controller will still be able to execute plenty of awesome moves. Then there's the importance of the narrative, which Sucker Punch isn't downplaying; they're really trying to suck you in from the get-go. The only possible cause from concern comes when gamers view the former piece of information as "dumbing down."

Thing is, inFamous was never overly difficult before. If they're going to make it even easier, it's possible that some fans may see this as a detriment. Do you see it that way?

They can do what they want with the controls as long as the gameplay is enjoyable, the story is great and I am not inundated with any QTEs.

This game looks like it's going to be killer and I can't wait to get my hands on it (or a PS4 for that matter! p.s. Please no need to tell me how easy it is to get one in your area - in mine - it ain't!)

I always thought the game was about having fun, and "real-life terrorism" is the exact opposite of fun. I don't need to be reminded of that stuff when I'm trying to enjoy my leisure time activity.

Well yeah it's about fun but I think it's okay if the themes for the story are serious. It isn't going to become all super serious all of the sudden, but harnessing the American anxiety surrounding public events, airports, and anywhere people gather can probably make for a great story. Who has powers? What could they do if they did?

There is always a way to make "serious things" fun.

Yeah this is not a game where anybody can have genuine outrage over making it "more accessible". When the more complext gameplay makes the game what it is like in Metro THEN it's okay to rage when the devs say they are going to dumb things down.

inFamous was already about feeling overpowered and easily causing serious damage everywhere you went.

Maybe this terrorist theme is why they decided to bring the series into the real world (Seattle) instead of continuing to make fake cities.

This game really needs a 9 score though, there's a lot riding on it.

Yeah.. I'm not really digging the moral ambiguity in this series and in videogames in general. What's so awful about having well defined heroes and villains? One of the things that bugs me most about protagonists like Cole Macgrath and Commander Shepard is that they lack well defined personalities, beliefs and ethics. Which is a direct result of their games requiring them to shift between good and evil at the drop of a hat. Guess what I'm saying is that these characters need a code. Much like the heroes and villains seen in comic books. And their choices, good or bad, need to adhere to that code. Here's hoping that there's a better balance between the good and bad choice this time around.

But if there's one thing I liked about this series, it's that being good was generally more difficult.. This mirrors life in general pretty well, in my opinion.

Apparently if a game isn't filled with freedom of choice these days then it's "linear" and thus a bad game.

I always hate when I hear the word streamlined. I'm hoping this game still provides a good challenge.

This is still my top anticipated PS4 game for this year that we know for sure is coming out.

I guess I will have dark souls 2 to give me a challenge this year anyway :P

I can only hope that the morality system in Second Son isn't as blindingly binary as it was in the earlier games. That's probably my only gripe with the series, you just see straight through it, but even if that remains the case I'm pumped :)

Not really sure how they could make the input scheme any more intuitive, which is what Fox seems to be implying there. I mean, it all felt pretty simple in the past. And I gotta say I love that they're dealing with more mature themes this time around. inFamous 2 really pointed in that kind of direction with Cole being vilified, but taking it to a whole new level here with the government actively seeking out Conduits is a really cool idea.

Damn... so hard to resist inFamous.

I thought it was better in 2 than 1, I mean yeah you know if you are being good or mean but not necessarily how those decisions will pan out later.

Never played any of of the inFamous games. I would like more demos to be released in the PSN store. It gives me an opportunity to try games that I am on the fence about.

What I will say is if Second Son does not deliver to the fans and meet the hype.... Sony will be a in trouble this year are the start.

They need a successful and consistent quality of game soon from a first party studio. They need it now.

Keep playing!

I am not a big fan of open world games, but the infamous series has been quite fun. I trust Sucker Punch's vision where fun is concerned. Hopefully, there's a good story in the game as well. I love a linear game with a good story though. Too bad that so many are against that format.

the more and more i read of this the less and less im excited for it.
just feels like SP are pulling a AC3 on us.
funny, 2 of my favourite games, and best new IPs, of last gen, AC2 and infamous.
one series turned on its head and royally f*cked!
and now looks like infamous is next in line.
sigh.
either a new IP does well and turns into this, or does poorly and you never see it again.
damned if you do, damned if you dont!
