3 Million Xbox Ones Sold In 2013, Did PS4 Sell The Same?

Sony's confirmed goal was to sell 3 million PlayStation 4 units by the end of 2013.

They still haven't announced whether or not they managed to hit that goal, but Microsoft has revealed that they sold over 3 million Xbox One units as of December 31, 2013.

Microsoft's new game console launched on November 22 in North America, the UK, Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Spain and New Zealand, and it was the fastest-selling console in the US in November. It hit the 2 million mark on December 11, and it seems the remainder of the holiday rush pushed the Xbox One over 3 million. At last check, Sony had reported that the PS4 had sold 2.1 million units worldwide by the start of December. So...how many did they sell in the month of December?

It's difficult to say. While the demand definitely was there, availability may not have been. Sony admitted to a "limited" amount of PS4s being available in December, and many gamers who didn't pre-order one have had a lot of difficulty locating a system. This may mean that Sony falls short of their intended 3 million goal, although perhaps they did manage to sell an additional 1 million units in December. Also, don't forget that the PS4 has yet to launch in its home country, Japan.

Do you think the PS4 outsold the Xbox One worldwide in 2013? Do you think it even outsold the Xbox One in the US?

I see that MS is trying to beat Sony to the punch on numbers reporting in order to try to grab some headlines. I'm still skeptical of what kind of numbers they are skewing to get the result they want. I'm not sure who is buying them in any case.

VGChartz (the ballparkers) has PS4 at 3.9 million now.

VGChartz had the PS4 a full million units ahead of the Xbox One, and the next week they showed it selling 600,000 while the One sold 300,000, but their total changed to the PS4 being .9 million ahead. So apparently 400,000 unit adjustments are par for the course for them lol.

Now I see it's back up to an even million according to them.

I'm with you...some of the reports state that the PS4 is selling at a 2 to 1 ratio...something smells fishy here.

Congrats to them if the numbers are real..it's only good for business.

Truth be told we won't know until the end of this year which system sold more. It's been fairly reliably reported that BOTH systems are selling neck and neck at the moment. Until the ps4 is released in all parts of the world and both consoles have a chance to meet the demands of consumers throughout the world we won't have a true "winner".

It has been confirmed that the PS4 beat the Xbox One in the U.K. in December; selling 530K to Xbox One's 364,000. Good sign as the U.K. is a Microsoft stronghold.

It will be a moot point once Japan gets the PS4. Sony will dominate Japan this generation, not Nintendo and certainly not Microsoft.

It will dominate Japan. However, Japan is mostly a handheld and mobile market these days.

For instance, the 3DS already surpassed the LTD sales of the PS3 there.

So the real markets for consoles are the US and Europe. That's where the real battle is taking place.

The Xbox brand pretty much has ruled the US. But Sony can easily take over EU and also the US if they focus on these markets.

I went to best buy, target and walmart today. Not a single PS4 in stock. Fully stocked on Xbones. Not sure what this means. Either the PS4 is selling A LOT better or Sony isn't keeping up with demand.

its going to be really interesting to see how the steambox effects consoles in the coming years.
up until now ive been riding it off because i thought there limited to one video card, but today origin announced a SLI steambox so out that goes.
there going to be significantly more powerful, significantly more versatile, and can do a million more things, all while costing roughly the same!
not to mention the steam controller which looks so much better, finally someone gets rid of those darn awful analogue sticks!!!!!!!!!!!!
$ony, M$, enjoy it while you can because your days are numbered!

SLI isn't a good way to go with gaming PC's, quite a few games don't support multiple video cards at launch, some never do, and even once they're patched to support it, they often just don't run well. You get microstuttering frame rates etc.

The worst thing about the Steambox is that Gabe Newell hates Microsoft so they won't have Windows on it (that's another $90 if you want to add it) and instead they use the Steam OS which is based on Linux. Only a handful of games run on Linux, mostly indy titles and virtually none of the big AAA titles. You can stream games that only run on Windows, but to do so you'll need a Windows PC to act as a middleman lol.

As far as costing the same, nope. The streaming machines might get down to $400, but for anything with a decent CPU and GPU you're quickly into almost twice the price of a PS4. With an extremely limited variety of games and needing a Windows PC to handle the streaming, which of course creates even more lag as you're streaming through two machines instead of just one. Besides you can do streaming with a $100 OnLive box.

I imagine they'll sell a batch of them at launch after which it will fade into near obscurity.

It's a poor business model. Even if it's a good machine, it's not a viable business idea.

First of all, most of their followers are big PC users. You will get a few hardcore Gabe fans that'll gobble it up and religiously defend it until the day it dies. But most Steam fans like having completele control and customizability of their own PC's. And they'll stick to what they know.

Second, you aren't going to get many new users. Especially when so many of the games you'd like to play won't be available for it.

Third, there will be too much difference in costs from one steambox to the next. The level of cost difference they are proposing is far more than a majority of the market will want to wade through. As it is, making a decision between a 120GB and 250GB system is variety enough for many!

And final point I'll make, although there are others, is that the gaming industry has hardcore gamers at their core, but a majority of the business model is supported by casual and less frequent gamers. Right off the bat with their service model (not having Windows, not being familiar at a grand scale, etc.) they are eliminating a significant portion of the market.

It just won't work on a grand scale, and Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo have absolutely nothing to "watch out" for.

A decent Steammachine will not cost the same as a next gen console, as someone here already stated. I don't think many will buy these boxes since many of the people who even know or support any Steam related product/service already have excellent gaming rigs, so they have no need to own a product inferior to their gaming PCs. It's much more credible for a casual to buy a Nintendo, Sony or MS product to one that they have never heard of... and we know for a fact the casual market is big.

you do realize that theres already 250 games running on steam OS, and you can install windows if you want so you can play EVERY steam game right?
SLIs not that bad either, go through nvidias list of updates in their latest driver update and you will see SLI profiles for games which are not even out yet!
ages ago it was a problem, now most games have one by the time they release!
hell BF4 had a SLI profile a week before the alpha code was released to select participants!
and that was a AMD optimized game because DICEs using mantle.
oh, and a "decent" steam machine WILL cost the same as the ps4 and xbox one!
dells already said theres is the same price, and significantly more powerful!
ibuy i think there called has done the same.
only ones which are higher are the tower designed ones with liquid cooling, or the SLI ones like origin which actually touts both liquid cooling and SLI!

Errr not exactly. Global warming is a farce. Climates change all the time. It's pretty arrogant of man to think they can control the weather. The north US once was completely covered under a sheet of ice. It melted....without the help of SUV's, pollution or industrialized nations. The earth has been MUCH warmer in the past. Now that it's getting colder the fanatics and grant seekers are trying to change the definition of global warming....again. Now it's a "polar vortex" Truly Orwellian.

What tempature should planet be underdog? You do know as a matter of fact that when we were warming it wasn't just the earth? Mars was warming too. Now unless there are Martians driving Chevy Tahoes and burning coal(which of course there's not) the warming would be a direct result of the increased sun activity of the time.

the sun is literally growing. global warming is very real. the ice caps will eventually melt. the polar bears will cry. it'll take millions of years but it will happen.
it is the overblown impending threat of MAN MADE global warming that needs to take the flack. that appears to be nothing more than a federal money grab, ie carbon credits etc.

Jawk, the way you are talking about temperature and "warming" shows you don't really know what "global warming" is.

I'm sorry, but the science is science. Science shows that the science qualifies as science thanks to the scientific method that helps us science science.

But I'm not gonna get into this. It's like starting from scratch.

I will agree it's not happening as fast as some outlets proclaim it is. But it's as real as you and I are staring at our screens.

To save myself time and the energy from having to respond to whatever response you provide, I've linked a neat little website that can answer for me... "How to talk to a Climate Skeptic". For all your rebuttal (exact or similar), there is a response....

To correct myself, i'm fuzzy on what my astronomy professor said, but after a quick look it appears the sun is growing in luminosity, which does affect temperature. It won't start actually expanding fast for another few billion years.
but sure enough, in time, our planet will be hotter than Venus and we'll all die.
whether this process is significantly accelerated, or not, by the actions of man is left for Jawknee and Underdog to battle it out =p

Global warming is real. They have not, however, and cannot prove that it has anything whatsoever to do with man. Greenland got its name because, long before man ever invented a machine, it was GREEN. At various times in recorded human history, there has been far less ice at both the north and south poles.

It's climate change. It happens. This crap about polar bears dying or the icecaps melting away to nothing is beyond sensationalist garbage. Tell that to the people stuck in the ice down at the south pole, and the first ice-cutter that got stuck trying to save them, and the second that had to go in after both of them.

I glanced over that link Jawknee. The guy, whoever Coby Beck is and his blog, positions arguments in a fallacious manner.
That is, he squashes arguments over generalizations like "there is no evidence" of global warming or sets up dichotomies that are logically rebuked through a basic deductive process. The topic of controversy could be anything and he could appear to be right in this fashion. but appearance isn't truth.
For me to say "jRPG's don't exist anymore" would be false, and easily rebuked, as it would be addressing an over generalization. But for me to say jRPG's aren't as frequent in quality and quantity of release as they were years ago, would be plausible.

The numbers mean nothing more that a marketing tool. MS has come out shooting trying to corner the market again and Sony, as always, keeps coming up short in how it markets itself.

Sony has moment of inspiration but it seems always short lived or late in coming.

If the numbers are true from MS, whether manipulated or not and I am sure Sony does the same, it just shows really that everyone saying that Xboxers were jumping ship was a little exaggerated. They are too invested in the brand they follow. BUT that is not to say they would not this time round own both systems. That is a win for Sony.

So ignore the number game. Its post Xmas. Sony needs to start delivering the games, updating their console hardware for next version of PS4 (better stability and less hardware issues) and get in the game.

Keep playing!
