Breaking News: Worldwide PS4 Sales Surpass 4.2 Million

Yesterday, it was announced that Microsoft had sold over 3 million Xbox One consoles in 2013. As that was Sony's goal for the number of PS4s sold in that same time period, we wondered if if they had hit that goal.

Well, they did. In fact, they did 3 million and then some.

Today, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. announced that cumulative sales of the PlayStation 4 hit 4.2 million as of December 28, 2013. The system is now available in 53 countries worldwide but it has yet to launch in Japan. Said President and Group CEO of SEI, Andrew House:

"The momentum of the PS4 system keeps getting stronger and we couldn't be more thrilled gamers worldwide are enjoying the incredibly immersive gaming experiences along with deep social capabilities and entertainment provided by our network. After a remarkable launch, we look forward to bringing even more exciting content and continuing to explore the power of the PS4 system by adding new features and services, including PlayStation Now, in 2014."

PS4 software sales hit 9.7 million during the holiday season, counting physical and digital downloads. Top-selling titles included Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Killzone: Shadow Fall and FIFA 14. Additionally, new PS4 owners have been signing up for PlayStation Plus at a rapid clip; global subscriptions increased by over 90 percent since the launch of the new console. Of course, it helps to remember that in order to play online, you have to have a Plus membership this generation.

PS4 owners are also sharing their gameplay experiences; thus far, over 1.7 million gameplay broadcasts have been streamed from PS4 systems (utilizing Twitch and Ustream), which has resulted in 55 million minutes of footage and 22 million spectate sessions. Yes, the PS4 is off and running!

That's a very impressive launch - 2.1 million in November then another 2.1 million in the month after that!

Amazon recently lauched MGS5 preorders and I believe the game will have MGS5 in disc format. If so, I'm sure someone will buy me a PS4 for my birthday next month hehe!

Dark Souls 2 on PS3 and MGS 5 on PS4? This will be a very busy year for me lol.

Delighted with this news.

Congratulations to Sony on releasing the best console on the market yet again.

The only thing I'm worried about is the level of maturity in online games that I experienced on the PS3. I hope it continues on the PS4.

Because of the PS4's own party up feature, you know the one that supports cross-game chat, you can party up outside of a game and never have to hear anyone else's voice chat from within the game ever again. You can if you want but I've found partying up with friends from my friends list this way has been serving me well.

If your wondering what its like outside of the party feature I'd say the level of maturity had gone down a bit in my experience.

Yeah I mean the Consoles are selling like crazy. You can't find them on store shelves because everybody wants one. Sony's goal was pretty high I thought but it looks as though they've gotten their demographic back, and excluding Japan sales have started to put a dent in the US sales that MS controlled. When this thing releases in Japan also, Sony's gonna be partying hard.

when sony says something like this, its easy to believe for me. microsoft on the otherhand reeks of desperation. how the hell are they telling me that xbones are sold out everywhere when everytime i go out, each store has xbones on their shelves? i live in vegas and thats not anout of the way area.

Sorry to go off topic. I plan to go to Las Vegas either at the end of April or the first weekend of May. Is that a good time to go partying over there?

i just hope the disparity continues to widen, as it very well should. it's obvious MS has exceeded the XO's demand with supply for quite some time now. While Sony has been well short of meeting the PS4's demand since day one. Sony has stated they don't anticipate meeting that demand until sometime in Feb or March. It's after this point where we can really start to see how things will shake out long term.

You want to go to Las Vegas from mid-March to early May as the temperatures aren't oppressively hot. I doubt bad weather would delay your flight, either.

I agree especially when MS never gives the exact amount. They just say over 2 mil and now over 3 mil. The analyst all said the PS4 sales were over 4 mil but none have confirmed the XboxOne sales. Also I saw plenty of X1s in store the week of Christmas and online. They have them on Amazon, at Walmart, Target and Best Buy right now, but no PS4s. I was lucky to get one off Amazon that Friday before Christmas. They were gone the next day.

Eh... Let's just say that Microsoft has sold all of their XBOs to retail. So, technically their warehouses are sold out?

yeah, with so much hotels with their own club and whatnot along with off the vegas strip attractions, any time is a good time to party in vegas. only thing is the weather, it wont be as hot as summer but if its hot, they usually have a pool party type event or something at one of the hotels. theres rides on top of the stratosphere hotels, zipline on fremont street, gun ranges everywhere, lots of thing going on especially on the weekends.

So their goal was 5 million by the end of their fiscal year (March)? I say they have a pretty good shot!

hardly surprising considering how long weve had to wait, and how much more they can do now, and how much better priced they are.
however i have a funny feeling were going to have millions of very regretful purchasers in about 6 months time once steam boxes start hitting shelves!
oh well, as i said yesterday enjoy it while you can!

why is that? sony has alot of first party developers unlike microsoft. those games wont make it to steam because they will be the consoles selling point. unlike how xbox exclusives can be played on pc, sony exclusives will stay on a playstation platform.

That's with barely any notable games and without a release in their home territory. I think we might be back to the days of Playstation domination. MS can keep the billion dollars that they've poured into exclusive development; Sony has a track record. :)

That is absolutely HUGE number. Consider, they effectively exceeded their own optimistic goal by ~45 percent!!! And they haven't even launched in Japan yet.

I always stress, this is a marathon, not a sprint. Microsoft has an enormous war chest of funds, some killer exclusives in the pipeline, and could simply slash the price of the Xbox One drastically, sell it at a loss in the name of regaining market share.

But there's no two ways about it, Sony is off to an incredible start. That's the best they could have hoped for up to this point!
