December NPD: Xbox One Tops, 3DS Is The Winner In 2013

Until Sony releases exact figures for the PlayStation 4, this is all we have to go on.

The NPD US sales data for December has been released, and Microsoft says the Xbox One was the top-selling console for the month, selling an impressive 908,000 units.

The Xbox 360 was third with 643,000 consoles sold, which led "last-gen hardware," according to Microsoft. The NPD adds that while the Nintendo 3DS topped the overall hardware sales for December 2013 and for the year overall, the Xbox One led on a "dollars basis" due to its $500 price tag. Microsoft claimed "50 percent of the combined software, hardware and accessories spend in the US," as the two Xbox platforms raked in $1.39 billion. As for total US spending, that came in at "just under $2.4 billion."

In regards to the PS4 vs. Xbox One race, the NPD clarified that the PS4's two-month total (November and December) makes it the best selling console during that time period. We all remember the news that Sony had moved 4.2 million PS4 units worldwide, while the Xbox One came in at 3 million. Obviously, though, we all knew Microsoft's system would fare best in the US, even if the PS4 did very well.

Even Nintendo had a decent month in December; the industry really rebounded. Let's hope that 2014 is an up year for everyone!

Can't keep up with demand. More people want it, it shows up for 20 min on the shelf and its gone. I don't think anyone expected this type of reception. Sony's goal through March was what 3 million. That was well surpassed as of the new year with 4.2.

@ Kiryu - NPD confirmed that the Xbone was the best selling next-gen console. They said it. There is no debate about that fact.

However, there should be a debate over how many PS4's Sony shipped in the US market and if there were any shortages last month (they were).

Where are these shortages? I walked into my local best buy on Tuesday (like I always do) and saw 3-4 PS4's on the shelves....Even the Sony Style store had a disgusting amount of PS4's (stopped there due to a camera issue yesterday). I can play everything out right now on PS3 except Knack....which isn't a must have for me so no real need for a PS4. Anyway, if you have not found a PS4 by now...you are doing it wrong! o_O

In the US last DECEMBER.

And I'm not bringing up anecdotal evidence either. Sony just confirmed that they had very limited stock during the holiday season.

@Bonampak: IDK...even in Dec there were more then expected PS4's on the shelves. I have a photo (when I purchased an Alpha camera for x-mas) of the Sony store with more then 50 PS4's stacked against their wall. If there was a shortage, maybe it was only in some areas?? It was very dis-concerning considering I want a PS4 and hope that they do well this generation. Sadly, I also almost bought a few to see how they would do on eBay...but didn't since there were 'double digit' stock in store.

Well the thing is... There were near to 0 PS4s in stores in december XD. We did receive regular Xbone supplies here in Quebec. Even up to now we only managed to get 20 PS4s since december. MS was much more present hardware-wise in the NA than Sony. That, to me, is why they have more sales.

(And we are a huge chain of stores)

absolutely. if Sony has only a one week head start on MS and that's enough to be ahead of MS, then well whatever December lead MS has is marginal at best. Rest assured if the PS4's were there on shelves MS would be making no such claim.
Walmart, Best Buy, and AMazon still all show no PS4's available.
What is sad is that XO's are in ample supply. The demand for XO is obviously well below the PS4's.
I'm sure Sony is having to offset some PS4's to prepare for the Japanese launch as well.

MS will soon learn that being the latest, most expensive, and poorest in PR is always an advent for losing some serious ground in any console race.

and think about how many units Sony HAS to allocate to europe from the total weekly production of consoles. including also preparing the japanese launch. once sony can meet the demand we'll see how things settle out.
i won't make any claim as to exactly who will "win" the U.S. but for certain MS will suffer as a result of being highest priced. I absolutely won't be surprised if they lose in every market.

and if Sony has sold over 4.2 million consoles, and that represents 100% sell through, and assuming MS's production is on par or better than Sony's but with only 3million something sold, that means over a million XO's are sitting on shelves unsold worldwide.

let's see if MS can crack even 7 million by the year's end

The Xbone was on top in the US last December. Not on top overall and in the entire world.

NPD confirmed what MS said about them coming on top last month. And X1 probably came on top because MS made sure they had enough shipments of the console in that market.

While Sony was focusing on shipping enough consoles all over the world. There were PS4 shortages in the US as a result.

The way I see it is Sony went bigger worldwide for launching the PS4 and as a result sold a million more units than MS. So basically, whatever units that could have been sold in the US was distributed elsewhere in the world. Sony had the biggest launch in Playstation history I don't think Sony could have done any better IMO.

the Xbox 360 will sell well for a good while. at it's price and offering of popular multiplats the console will remain popular for some time. thankfully history shows that a new platform positioned to a more premium paying audience will suffer significantly as a result of it.
The lower cost Sega Genesis and edgier image outsold the SNES in the states. It may not seem significant but seeing how the NES dominated stateside it was quite the SEGA victory. All the while it's successor flopped everywhere up against Sony and Nintendo with it's high price and half baked launch lineup. The N64 lost about half of it's user base in only one generation with it's expensive games and highest priced console and lack of software. Similarly Sony bungled the PS3 at an outrageous $500-600 and seriosuly lacking online support in contrast to Xbox, and not to mention reviled archecture by Western devs and generally bad Sony image. Nintendo is feeling it already with the Wii U. It's hard to convert a Wii market to a premium one just like that.

EDIT: With PS4 having most all the hottest games, lowest cost and exciting new services, like PS Now, and not to mention the unusual instance of having a lower cost but more powerful processing advantage that is approachable by developers, word will continue to spread virally that the PS4 is where it's best, as it has already.
Just look at how horrible MS is doing in Europe. This is a disastrous situation for MS and it'll only become more clear as time goes on.

True, true, true. It's just that people were spending three hundred bucks on the available Xbox 360s and I felt like they were getting ripped off by spending that much on a console that's seven years old. Especially when there's new consoles out like the Ps4 that's an extra hundred dollars, but will last them ten years worth of new games longer.

360 starts at $200. That $100 price advantage will always serve to MS's 360 benefit

EDIT: and oh yah, 360 is popular in the states so that doesn't surprise me. It's just MS has been tapping a bottom feeder market this entire console generation that Sony never reached. I'm sure that accounts for a quarter or more of 360's success.

This is not that old stereotype of the US loves the Xbox. This is simply numbers.

Sony couldn't get as many PS4's on the shelf as MS did with the Xbone.

Simple as that, no preference crap, no stereotypes, pure supply and demand issues.

Let's wait until supply catches up with demand before making judgements about the US' demographics.

No. If the PS4 was the best-selling console in the Nov/Dec period, obviously, there were machines to sell in December.

And I'll make all the judgments I want about US demographics, as I've got 7 years of evidence to prove that this is an Xbox-dominated country. The Xbox 360 outsold the PS3 by a 2:1, even 3:1, ratio in this country year in and year out. Two months of the PS4 really isn't going to change that.

Saying the US loves Xbox is hardly a stereotype. The numbers don't lie, and they're crystal clear. Not saying that can't change; just talking about history.

To be honest, I would not be bothered or even try to come up which reasons or excuses for which came first, second or third. It just is the way it is. Yep, I guess people would like to know the numbers from Sony in regards to the US, but really. Did you not see this coming. Even I knew the Xbox1 would do well regardless of the the complaining with its policies and the 180 degree turns. People buy what they are invested in and are in the habit of using.

Supply and demand will continue for both, etc., etc.

What needs to happen is the games. Supply needs to the there for those who have not and wish to buy.... but the games need to be there. So now the focus needs to really be on showing people WHY they should be the PS4 or whatever system. The games.

2014 will be a crucial year. The exclusives as well as the services.

Let Sony worry about numbers and let the fanboys do the talk that makes them feel warm and tingly inside. Let the gamers.. focus on playing games. Thats what its all about.

Keep playing, keep warm, and don't forget to recharge your controller!

MS must be doing a better job meeting demand if these numbers are accurate. There just isn't any PS4's to be found anywhere. I look almost daily when I'm out doing errands. But these same stores always have 10 or more Xbones on the shelf. The target closest to me hasn't sold a Xbone in over a week. They had three PS4's a week ago and sold out of them in 24 hours.

Very true. We're just going to have wait a good 5-6 more months before we get an accurate read on demand for either console, I think. When there's ample supply on the store shelves, a few big games are out for each, we'll get a much better idea of everything.

really surprised how well M$ are doing, especially considering they have not exactly had the smoothest road.
and they still havent launched in most EU countries yet so once they do it will pick up even more.
now only if both manufactures would hurry the &^%$ up and announce and release their VR kits ill be set!
really hope $onys VR headset thing is not that T3Q piece of sh*t kaz announced at CES!
not a VR headset at all, its only 40 fov not 110, and its about as comfortable as having your head in a vice!
really wish someone would come out and give occulus a good swift kick up the rear.
1 there taking FAR too long, they said last E3 that the consumer model was a year away, now there saying when its ready.
we all know what that means........
oh and 1 1080P screen just wont cut it, thats less than 720P per eye!
PC gamers stopped playing in 720P what 15 years ago?
sorry oculus, but its either a 2560x1600 screen like what 99% of PC gamers use now, or a 4K screen which the 1% use.
exactly what really pisses me off about oculus, there trying to prove VR is ready for the market, it is as amazing as you imagine, and they do that by cheaping out and instead of proving the stereotypes wrong, they prove them right.
i can see this being exactly like 3D, not because its not ready, but because oculus are just too f*cking greedy!
spend a little extra and put the best screen possible in there, ok it will cost more than 300, but so f*cking what!?
hey guess what, this is marketed to PC gamers, now how many of them in the past 5 years have spent over 500 bucks for a monitor?
so i think theres more than enough of a big enough market to sell a 500+ dollar VR kit!
hell dells selling 1500 dollar 4K monitors, ASUS are selling THREE THOUSAND dollar monitors, and there doing just fine!
so i think the company who just recently got another 75M in funding can afford to splash a little more than 300 per unit.

@Ben numbers don't lie but with consoles that break quite often you can't get an accurate count i Live in the US and have friends that have had 3 360s RROD

you ask alot of actual gamers that had a 360 for 2 years or more when 360s first came out many will tell you they got RROD and bought a new 360

as for this article its pointless because of supply and demand im not counting JP yet but Sony is selling their PS4 in more countries than MS

i personally hate how people who write these articles Miss some of the important details

and to be quite honest i wonder how many PC gamers Sony will attract with MMOS like Deep Down and Onigiri what would be nice is if Sega would Port over PSO2 to PS4 but thats unlikely

You just made my point. You're right, the Xbox 360 broke all the time; it was a junk machine. And yet, people kept buying it, didn't they? More specifically, they kept RE-buying it.

You also can't have a problem with an article based on official sales results. If you think any information is missing, you need to contact the NPD.

I have not seen either console in stores here in Ottawa. I've been to EB, Target, Future Shop, Walmart, everywhere and they are both sold out. What is telling is that on Kijiji, the PS4 is still being marked up by the sellers. It's always $100-200 more than what you would pay. Xbox One, on the other hand, is being sold at the same price at the store. Pretty much tells me what's going on at least here. People want a PS4 more than the Xbox One.

I do understand why people want to buy a 360 or One. The Jennifer Lawrence of video games, Titanfall, is console exclusive to those platforms...and like Jennifer Lawrence, I don't see what the fuss is over Titanfall. I see nothing special about either of them.
