Microsoft: The Online Hate That Infects Gaming Should Go Away

With the recently revealed sales numbers (and further scrutiny concerning the lack of exact PS4 stats for the US), the fanboy wars are on.

However, one major Microsoft player says this kind of petty nonsense "infects gaming" and really should disappear. Speaking on Reddit, Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb argued that we should be focusing on the industry's long-awaited upswing rather than who's "winning."

"Both new platforms are off to a great start. We all should be celebrating a healthy, vibrant industry. Sony has done a good job and they should be commended. The hate that infects gaming in the online space needs to go away. Sony will sell a ton. We will sell a ton. The industry is doing well...and consumers have choice."

First and foremost, of course he's right. I've been saying the same thing for years. The inanity and uselessness of sales battles and who's winning what is utterly pointless. It adds nothing to the enjoyment or entertainment factor and last I checked, this was supposed to be a fun hobby. Therefore, Major Nelson makes a valid point and one that, in my estimation, should be repeated over and over.

That being said, is anyone else sensing a little downplaying going on? I mean, would this guy have said the same thing if the global sales numbers (4.2 million for PS4, 3 million for Xbox One) were reversed? Yeah, I'm not so sure...I smell a major PR spin from "Major Nelson."

This from the company that hires people to infect the boards with that hate. Where was this talk when PS3 was being bashed to pieces by everyone?

Without fanboy wars he wouldn't be a rich man.

Don't really care about any PR spin to this statement, real or perceived. He's right. The amount of vitriol thrown up between supporters on either side of the "console war" is utterly obscene. Just play what you want to play on what you want to play it on. There's no need for this ridiculous divide between Xbox and PS, RPG and FPS, and so on and so forth.

"Just play what you want to play on what you want to play it on. There's no need for this ridiculous divide between Xbox and PS"

Well except for instances like last gen when Microsoft actually managed to convince most of the United States that the Xbox 360 was the vastly superior console causing anyone without a PS3 to suffer by not being able to play multiplayer games with their friends.

Well least most of those people seemed to have learned which was truly the superior console in the end. I still don't understand how people could go through 4+ 360's and still spout how the 360 is the best console and the PS3 was trash.... I can not even count how many times I had to listen to this when I was always asked which console I gamed on....
I know I am being a total fanboy right now but my god it was insane! I am just glad this gen is coming to a close and almost everyone I know has already gone with the PS4 or are planning on doing so.

Final Word: Really wish Nintendo would have just suffered through the last few years of this gen with the Wii instead of pulling a Sega and releasing the half-gen Wii U. I really would have loved to see a major clash between Sony and The Big N this gen now that would have been a console war I would not have minded witnessing at all.

If I'm being honest, I have no idea what you're trying to say here, Shaunee. If you're talking multiplayer it can objectively be stated that for the majority of the 360/PS3 generation, the 360 was the better bet and the superior console, in that regard. And the same goes for multiplatform games. Parity was widely achieved later on, and the PS3 had more single player-centric exclusives, but that only reinforces the sentiment of my original post.

Your second paragraph is basically the exact thing that I'm saying we don't need, but at least you're doing it in a nice way. You're formulating some kind of "us and them" mentality by implying that the X360 was an inferior console and it's such a great thing that people are picking up the PS4. Why does it bother you so much? Why does it even matter what other people play their games on?

I don't think it infects gaming any more than your average other industry/topic. As a politics junkie I can tell you us gamers have it easy.

Yeah - if it's one thing MS really stands for it's wanting a fair & healthy competition in a business segment in which it's involved.

When this article appeared on Gamespot, a long console war ensued in the comments section. I guess it was a PD day in the U.S. Seems like no matter what time you visit a video game site, there are adolescent boys abusing the comments sections.

I wish these schools and colleges would block these kids from going to Gamespot or IGN.

... Still, what everyone are talking about these days - also on this site - is if PS takes over the lead in the US or not. So one might say it's "pointless" who wins - action speaks louder than words.

And it's not strange that it is like this. It's like a sports event where you cheer on your team. It's exciting!

As for me personally I've always thought it's more fun with the underdog than the market leader. Also, since when was the best seller also the best product?

But most people acknowledge that is an anomaly.

People keep saying these fan boy arguments over which console is better need to go away and are stupid, but where where they in the 90s with the Sega vs Nintendo arguments? Those were pretty bad.

I don't think he would have said this if the Xbox One was in the lead.

If the fanboys had had easy access to the internet during the SNES/Genesis days then it would have been just as bad. Most of the posturing was done face-to-face and it's not as likely to happen when you're facing someone who's close enough to punch you. One of the elements required for the John Gabriel Greater Internet F***wad Theory to work is anonymity.

Major Nelson should tell his buddy Aaron Greenberg to can it. Problem is, Aaron's entire reputation is based on being the biggest Xbox fanboy around. It's sad how many males kiss this guy's ass on twitter.

I'm not a big fan of the "Major" and it seems that their PR department is in full spin mode. They keep shoveling the excrement, hoping that it will reach people who don't pay attention to the gaming world.

"Valve is not a threat to consoles"
Xbox One was the "fastest-selling" for November
Xbox One was "supply constrained" in December
Hardware difference in PS4 and Xbox One is "fairly marginal"

Just because MS says it, doesn't make it true. I don't think anyone can deny that if the PS4 was more available in the US in December, the headlines would be much different. Sony isn't necessarily wrong to spread out the inventory worldwide instead of concentrating on a smaller number of markets. However, it does give MS small victories that help the perception they're trying to spread.

I look at sites like Gamespot and IGN with their constant "PS4 vs. Xbox One" articles and it's pretty obvious they depend on the "hate" for page hits. And then I look at Microsoft paying developers not to let other people play their games and see they're actually worse.

Since they promoted the first concept of what the XBone was going to be they got a bunch of hate of course now they are not okay with this, I remember when they rewarded George Hotz (the guy hacked the PS3 and told everyone how to do it) e_é.

online hate is the reason xbox is being out paced by playstation of course they dont want any of it. online hate is the reason they didnt get their way with their policies. win for cosumers, loss for them. even removed a feature people like because it would be impossible to do without always online policy.... know what else is impossible? sim city having an offline mode as the devs said it would be impossible...... whoops... it happened. this online hate, which they brought into themselves, is pretty much the red ring thing except this time people got smart about it. seriously, how can someone say xbox is the best console when theyre on their 6th or 7th xbox is just stupid.

micro&soft LOVE the fact their fans are so rabid, they are SO rabid they will bully their friends and others into buying "THEIR" system, which of course means more sales for micro&soft...

The ONLY reason the 360 did as well as it did was because of rabid fanboys repeatedly buying systems as they kept breaking, I knew more than a few people, when I was I the Air Force, who had bought 3 or MORE 360s cause of broken systems... Some people are just dense as dense could be...

They shot themselves in the foot. No one forced Microsoft to try to screw gamers with their initial Xbone policies. That being said, birth systems lost me for charging for what Steam provides for free, an online gaming community with free online multiplayer. To hell with Microsoft for starting console systems down the path of paid access to online multiplayer. And shame on Sony for following suit.
