Rockstar Needs Help With "Cutting-Edge" Next-Gen Tech

At this point, we have to assume all major developers are working on next-generation stuff in some capacity.

So it shouldn't come as any surprise that Rockstar is one of those developers. After all, without Rockstar, we'd feel kinda lost as gamers...no Grand Theft Auto? No Red Dead? Man, how depressing would that be?

A reader has sent us a job listing at Rockstar North (the GTAV team); as you can see, the studio is looking for an experienced Core Engine Programmer to help in building "cutting-edge" tech for both current and next-gen systems. The successful candidate will have experience with "streaming, open-world games," and that of course comes as no surprise, considering Rockstar's development history. By the way, this branch of the talented developer is based in Scotland so if you think you've got what it takes and you live in the US, you'd have to relocate.

Of all the game makers out there, I'm probably most excited to see what Rockstar does in the next generation. They could utilize a lot of extra power and do some fantastic things, don't you think?

Couldnt agree more, Rockstar keeps coming out with very impressive games with each new generation. Damn, I remember when GTA3 came out for the PS2, that game alone must have sold a ton of units for sony.

Well, we can only wait to see what kind of fun GTA V brings us this coming year, and only dream of what kind of goodies we'll get with the PS4 and Rockstar.

I could have told you so. :)
Prices of games are dropping insanely fast these days. There really is a lot to save by not buying them immediately after launch.

yah, for sure. It's real rare I buy a game release date new. I suspect when I earn more money and am possibly more selective with how I spend my time, I'll pay full price for the games I really care about. I like the idea of contributing more to those who generate the content I enjoy so much. But right now, I am that bottom feeder market. So until my income changes I shop the bargains basically every time. The problem these days has become more of buying TOO MUCH of the cheap stuff without realistically ever having the time to play them.

I think "streaming" is used in context of streaming data from storage in real time. Most quality games do this these days. It's a way to make your console get a lot more done in a level without as much concern over RAM limitations. It's a great way to eliminate those nasty loading zones, creating a more seamless openworld experience.

Then of course, there's streaming over a network like Netflix... heheh sucky. OnLive woot. =p

Yes, Temjin is right. That's how they got RAGE to look so good, it's build entirely on streaming. If you got the game, notice how the hard drive indicator lights up if you as much as *touch* the sticks.

Joy! Does this mean that Agent is moving to the next gen? I find it a little funny that North is looking for this, considering that they aren't R*'s engine programmers, but I suppose they always need someone to help them make the refinement that they specifically need.

confirmed, agent has been moved to next gen.
intrigued to see what R* does with next gen systems, but theres other developers who could and would make better use of it.
id be more interested to see what 4A games, CD project red and 343i do with it.
or even bugthesda.
they may make ridiculously buggy games, but if theres one thing they do perfectly its creating beautiful, creative, innovative, awe inspiring worlds!
