PSXE Poll Update: Sony's Lead Is Great, But It's A Marathon

It's encouraging but we've still got a ways to go.

That seems to be the general consensus generated by our latest poll. We asked our readers if Sony's early lead in the new generation was an especially big deal.

Well, the majority agreed that it was significant, but slightly more participants were a bit more reserved, saying it's only the start of the marathon. However, a great many said this explosion out of the gate is "critical." Remember, the PlayStation 4 has sold 4.2 million consoles worldwide while the Xbox One sits at 3 million. It's also important to note that Sony's system hasn't yet launched in Japan; after it does, Sony will almost certainly increase their global lead. As for the US, that could be a neck-and-neck race for a while.

This week, if you don't own an Xbox One, why? Too much money? Good with the PS4? Doesn't have the games you want? Just don't like Microsoft? Or are you merely waiting until the right moment, perhaps when it does have games you really want to play?

Cost too much, still don't trust the hardware, no exclusives worth having, hate the company and their practices, don't like their fans, don't like app gimmicks. Gamed all my life, owned every console worth owning, still don't see them as a legitimate gaming party.

Still love my original Xbox though! That thing is a champ from when Billy Gates knew his place.

I simply can't trust Microsoft when one of their executives open his mouth. The Xbox One is an American console; Canadians will never get to use the myriad of features because of the CRTC. No Hulu or anything of that sort will ever be allowed here. No ESPN as well. Their exclusives don't interest me. I don't want to pay $100 more for a spycam I will never turn on.

I will concede the 360 was a better console for the American market than the PS3. It played Unreal Engine games better, it had the better online service despite people having to pay for it and it was the lead console 70% of the time on multi-plats. Those advantages are all gone as well as the lower price. I owned the Xbox and Xbox 360. I will NEVER own the One because Microsoft can't be trusted. They will find a way to get that money back that they have lost from their DRM plans.

What is sadder is that so many people forgave them and now they are finding out they have made a big mistake in giving them another chance. Look at Major Nelson's blog. People only show up when they have a prize up for grabs like the Titanfall controller.

I seriously wish I would have waited to buy my ps4. There are just too many games on the ps3 I got to play and NONE that I must play on the ps4.

At least you aren't being subjected to looking for a PS4 or paying up the nose for a machine. I paid $400 + tax and don't have that headache. Yes, I regret missing out on Beyond: Two Souls, Gran Turismo 6 and a few others but they will be on PS Now and I will play them then.

Honestly, the PS3 lineup for the rest of the year so far doesn't interest me. None of their not-coming-to-PS4 games were on my radar.

exactly what $ony says.
which is kinda true, but having the success they have early on will really help the long run.
the disaster that was the ps3s launch really hurt it in the long term by causing third party exclusives to become MP, and also put off quite a few MP developers all together.
had the ps3 had the launch the 4 has had it would of been in a much better position than its in.

as for the other, need a choice fanboys will be fanboys.
im glad i got my xbox one its been keeping me sane during this drought of new releases.
if it wasnt for the insanely fun dead rising 3 i probably would of snapped and bit the head off a chicken by now!
not to mention forza 5, i mean come on how can you have a new system release without a car game?
thats been playstations go to game since the brand was invented!
ps4 on the other hand i wish i waited, both because of the lack of exclusives and month costs.
every launch title was pretty crap frankly, and ISS is looking to be disappointment of 2014!
and we dont have anything esle set to release then, god knows when facebook racer, oh sorry i mean driveclub, and the order are releasing.
cost wise, especially in november i spent so much f*cking money with a new laptop, both next gen systems, and a new phone while i was waiting for my current xperia Z1 to be fixed.
cheap PoS xperia Z1!
again typical $ony with their piss poor customer support and reliability!

Don't have a PS4 yet, either. Not particularly interested in the X1, as I know that I'll scarcely be able to keep up with the PS4's release schedule (if the PS3's is any indication of how it will be). It's a shame that I don't see myself getting one, because Sunset Overdrive and Quantum Break both seem really interesting, as does (to a lesser extent) D4.

I don't have an Xbox One right now, mainly because I'm short on cash, and still saving up for a PS4. (doled out lots of it on a Vita over Christmas..)

To be honest though, if I had to choose a 'free' console, I'd choose PS4 and only because I like its form factor more than the Xbox One's.

I don't understand why the heck I should even consider a Xbone. Why on earth buy a console that holds 95% of the same games as the PS4? I just don't get that logic.

I've said it before but I'll say it again: If one want more than one gaming platform, choose a second platform that differ as much as possible from the first. It's easy logic: You get more of the gaming scene covered.

For me personally that means PS4+PC (Steam Machine). Best of both worlds, maximum area covered, plus a choice of best platform for whatever title/genre you want to play.

gonna take a good while though Beam for the PS4 to gain enough exclusives to justify a purchase when you have a gaming PC already I reckon.

The first year library of next-gen consoles is generally pretty easy to hold off on until the devs are caught up and firing on all cylinders.

That assumes that all games are best played on a PC, Temjin. And I don't agree with that. Some games are best played on PC, while others sits better on a console. And that's not just a question about the most suitable controller input (keyboard/mouse VS gamepad).

A console - at least up until today, time will show if the Steam Machines (and controller) eventually will narrow that gap - has a different *feel* than a PC. There's something about a console you just don't get on a PC. It's more consumer streamlined, much more mainstream, more... Dare I use that word around here... Causal about a console. And I mean that in a good way.

So in my opinion, to have a console laying around for those games you just feel like having on a console makes good sense for an avid gamer.

But to have TWO consoles as close to each other both in terms of software, hardware and system features as the Xbone and PS4? I just don't see the rationality behind it.

Yes, actually, if at first you want to have two consoles then I can much more understand those who go for the WiiU as the second console. At least that is a quite different machine.

Xbox One doesn't have any games I want, other than perhaps Forza, but I'm sure not paying $500 just for that. I've also been using a steering wheel for racing games for years now, there's absolutely no way I'd ever go back to using a controller, and of course my Logitech Driving Force GT won't work with Xbox (even though it works fine with my PC). The cheapest force-feedback steering wheel available for the Xbox costs hundreds of dollars.

I have no interest in their (or any) online shooters, which is about all they've really got. I also don't like Microsoft, they're pretty much like EA trying to nickel and dime everybody to death with their micro transactions and charging $60 for some DLC map packs in Halo and calling it a new game. And there's no way I'm paying $100 extra for a children's toy I'd never use, and I don't want a $500 computer turned on at all times when I'm watching TV just to (badly) replicate what my cable box already does.

I'll be good with the PS4.
It's not that I don't want a shot at Killer Instinct and the future Halo, it's that after I've invested into the PS4 it becomes very expensive to lay down for another console. One that doesn't have many exclusives I'd want in the first place, as of yet anyway. This is especially the case when the XO comes standard at $500. Ouch. And Killer Instinct would have me pay down for an LIVE subscription. Sorry. It's just not worth it.

Maybe when the XO get's released as a core system for under $200, maybe, just maybe would I consider one.

EDIT: I'd sooner consider a Wii U. I'm hoping for a $250 slashed price. My wife and I really enjoy Mario Kart games together. I know also I'd get a kick out of the latest Mario title. Bayonetta 2 is a plus as well. and that Xeno game played from the tablet seems to me a winner as well.
