Xbox Boss: Difference Between PS4 And Xbox One Is "Minor"

There's been a lot of talk lately about how certain multiplatform games perform on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

But Xbox director of product planning Albert Penello says we shouldn't put such a heavy emphasis on technical benchmarks like 1080p high-definition and 60 frames per second. During a recent GamertagRadio podcast, Penello said he believes the differences between the two next-gen systems are "pretty minor:"

"Look, I've had a lot of time to think about this and I believe what I said. I believe that the differences are not that great. And I know what is going behind the scenes and I have access to more information about some of this...than a lot of people. Sometimes I think people tend to neglect the points that are in my favor and they like to highlight the points that tell me that I am wrong. Right now, I still think Ryse is still the best looking game on any platform. Period. End of story."

The Tomb Raider Definitive Edition made the news a few days ago, when Crystal Dynamics confirmed that while the PS4 version would continue to strive for 60FPS, the Xbox One iteration would only hover around 30FPS. Furthermore, we've heard that the upcoming Watch Dogs might also be best on PS4. However, Penello reminds everyone that this is a long generation and after all, the new consoles just got here:

"There's a frame rate thing going on with Tomb Raider, there is a resolution thing going on and okay, there's a lot of reasons why that could be true but we are weeks in, we just shipped, it's a long generation."

Yes, it is. And we all remember at the start of the previous generation, when multiplatform games weren't turning out well on the PS3. Therefore, it'd be silly to think that PS4 games will always outperform their Xbox One counterparts throughout this entire era...but for the time being, it's worth noting, right Penello?

Haha, that sounds like a dude on the friggin brink! Somebody get that man a double scotch.

There are differences of import between the Xbox One and PS3 situations. PS3 was just difficult to develop for because it was so specialized. It had to be learned first. There isn't much more to learn with Xbone and PS4, all the improvements will be made in optimization.

PS4 will still always have a little more and so there's plenty of reason to believe multiplats will always run better there because now the baseline for architecture is equal.

I like the part where he says "its gonna be a long generation!".

It sure is MS. You're going to wake up every morning for the next 8-10 years hoping its all over soon.

The Xbox One *IS* a little harder to develop for due to the way it handles RAM so the developers will need more time to learn the ins and outs of the system. However, even with completely efficient optimization by the developers, the PS4 is still stronger.

A little different than last generation where the PS3 was more powerful than the 360, but incredibly more difficult to code for. At best, the Xbox One will be on par with PS4 in the years to come, but I would never expect games on the Xbone to look better than the PS4 as the PS3 eventually came to do against the 360.

I might only trust 1/2 of whatever MS tells me, but since MS usually speaks with a forked tongue, I choose to ignore their remaining 1/2 too!

BikerSaint,
You're alive! Glad to see you again. Apologies if you've been back for a while, but this is the first comment I've seen you make.
Also, I agree. M$ didn't have a problem playing up the times the 360 had superior framerates, etc. (e.g., early Maddens).

Xbox killer & Fane, thanks guys.

Yeah, I've been back on site since Christmas, but not posting as much, plus I don't have an email setup so I can't send in all of my usual tips & good gaming deals like I used too.

But soon hopefully.

One thing he's right about though is that they just shipped. Let's not forget how games looked back in 2006/7, compare that to games in 2013 on the same consoles. I'm not blaming any sites, but I'm getting tired of these headlines.

Killa as I'm sure others have pointed out, the architecture between the PS3 and 360 were much different compared to this generation.

Ryse may look good but its still sub-1080p and can barely maintain 30 fps. At least according to digital foundry. Plus the game the game isn't that great. Supposedly. I haven't played it myself...
You know what? Forget it. I don't care. Sony has its first party crew. That's all that matters.

A game that is not 1080p cannot look the best.KZ.Shadowfall owns that title.Ryse looks worst when you compare the dev kit version to the retail version.Plus there are not stab wounds, gore or blood spatter on the character model which GOW can even do that on the PS3 already.Ryse has crappy physics and stiff animation compared to PS3 games which is funny.

Ryse looks slightly worse than God Of War 3, and even though Ryse looks good, by no means is it the best looking game out right now. Warframe on the pc looks better than Ryse

While I agree that Ryse's graphics aren't the best we've ever seen, it does not look worse than GOW 3, if it did then MS would have really really screwed up.

Maybe Penello is right, now lets analyse the facts. PS3 multiplats were inferior in the beginnig, but PS3 hardware is superior than xbox360, and in the end thanks to ps3 hardaware superiority ps3 multiplats have the same quality as xbox360 multiplats, and ps3 exclusives comparing with xbox 360 exclusives, are best of the best. Xboxone hardware is not so superior to ps4 hardware. Next gen graphics demands in the near future will be more than today and then hardware will matter. PS4 can match the demand, but if xboxone can not much with the early next-gen graphics dmeands(COD,Tomb Rider), then it is a problem, because there is no magic that can turn pile of dog poo in to shining candy(only if MS will rerelease xboxone with better hardware :D)

Microsofts major problem here is that they got BOTH the most expensive AND the lesser performance machine.

One can argue how much the performance difference in reality means as much as one like, it doesn't change the fact that the Xbone is a significantly more expensive purchase.

Back in the PS3 launch days then at least the PS3 were estimated to offer a bit better performance. So it made kind of sense it was more expensive.

This time it's different, and that puts Microsoft in a much worse position than Sony was in the beginning of that generation.

Killzone Shadow Fall looks better than Ryse , period

Microsoft can put all the spin they want but at the end of the day, people bought an Xbox One primarily for video gaming. I doubt anybody bought it to use it as their centerpiece for their entertainment showcase; what with the big VCR-like box. I don't see anybody talking about the other "great" features. It's the video games that matter.

How one city can love both Aaron Greenberg and Richard Sherman, I'll never know. Doesn't give Seattle much of a reputation in my book.

Hahahaha this guy makes me laugh. Frame rates and Definition quality aren't very important? Since when? Everyone I know talks about nothing but those two things and gameplay. Gotta love them trying to downplay an obvious failing.

I think people only talk about those things because A) They're strictly objective measurables, and B) It's really all people know to bring up.

I think they're important, but they aren't the most important. I'd take an artistically accomplished presentation in 720p and 30fps over a drab and repetitive atmosphere in 1080p and 60 fps any day. I think most people would.

Underdog your bringing up something basically irrelevant. We aren't talking about diffferent games. We are talking about identical games running on different systems. It's not like choosing between Call of Duty and Uncharted. We are talking about uncharted at 1080P and 60 FPS or uncharted at 720P and 30 FPS. And Microsoft saying that the difference doesn't matter.

Underdog15

Fair enough. That definitely does matter to many people in that instance.

To me, it's still as the MS guy describes it, personally. The difference between 720p and 1080p or 30fps/60fps aren't that big of a difference for me, although it is noticeable. It wouldn't persuade me to buy one system over the other is what I mean. It's foolish of him to say the difference doesn't matter, but I agree it doesn't matter much.

Now... if one has frame rate dips and issues (dropping to 15 fps at times, for example) or screen tearing... lag... etc. etc. That's what bothers me. Problems. If they both ran smoothly at different resolutions, I wouldn't care too much.

But it is foolish of him to think everyone's like that.

almost every multi platform game on next ten runs at higher res n fps than bone , which is why we see so much ms execs talking about minimal differences and haven't seen sony talk yet because they don't need to defend anything, proof is in the pudding

He's a company man and he's paid to beat the drum. Microsoft's pulling itself out of a hole and the rah rah boosterism plus their attempts at taking the moral high road (Phil Spencer's "Ain't Naughty Dog great") is part and parcel of that. Maybe for the ninth gen they'll have even learned humility.

Start Fanboy:

I believe that the reason why Dead Rising 3 became an XBONE exclusive is because its a ploy by M$. The thousand of zombies on-screen is to show how powerful their system is. By restricting DR3 to just XBONE, we have no definite evidence that the PS4 is better!

Funny, if I'm not mistaken micro&soft was all about the graphic(and if I'm wrong they at least didn't down play it w/ the fanboys AT ALL), now they have pulled another 180 are all "oh, THAT, yeah that ain't all that important to us and doesn't mean much......".

I also find it amusing how the xbox fanboys are now screaming "BUT BUT IT'S HARDER TO PROGRAM FOR BECAUSE.....", oh too funny how the tables have turned.

A whole lot a anger in Albert Penello statement lol I find his statement very unprofessional and idiotic. Xbox One is getting out performed by PS4 in almost every aspect and in my honest opinion Killzone Shadowfall is the best looking Next Gen game as of now. A big reason PS3/Xbox 360 got a lot of hatedown the road was the poor frame-rate and resolution but now that PS4 is surpassing X1 in both aspects Albert Penello makes it seem like no big deal lol
