Report: PS4 And Xbox 720 To Be Officially Unveiled In March

Everyone is wondering when Sony and Microsoft will officially announce their new consoles for the next generation. And it might happen a lot sooner than we all think.

According to a new Game Informer report (as cited at VideoGamer), both console manufacturers are planning "special Apple-style press conferences" to reveal their new systems to the world. This would happen "near the Game Developers Conference," which runs during the last week of March.

This is because both Sony and Microsoft want to give the consoles "their own limelight," and will save E3 for next-gen game announcements. There also seems to be a possibility that Sony intends to release the PS4 (or Orbis) ahead of the Xbox 720 (or Durango):

"We hear that Sony in particular is determined not to come out last this time like the PlayStation 3 did this generation, so we'll have to see how soon it can get the PlayStation 4 out the door, and whether Microsoft is motivated to prevent this from happening," the report goes on."

In addition, Robert W. Baird analyst Colin Sebastian issued his predictions for the machines in question, saying the starting price point could be $350-$400, and that they might boast features like "enhanced voice control" and "broad multimedia capabilities." Looks like the big news isn't too far off, peeps!

I dont believe this at all really.
Star wars 1313,watchdogs,ground zero's,beyond two souls & The last guardian still dont have release dates yet,it could be behind close doors very early stage cpu/gpu specs but no way are console prototype's ready!!
I think there's still alot of money to be made from the current gen and i think sony & ms do too!

Indeed, there is still money to be made in this current gen of machines. That's why they will continue to be supported even after the next gen commences.

And there definitely are dev kits out already from both Sony and MS. It would take extreme naivety of the gaming industry to believe otherwise. Even if there wasn't a supposed announcement so soon from them, they would definitely have dev kits distributed to top developers...even if they hoped for a 2014 announcement. AAA titles aren't created in a month or two.

Sony has said a 10 year life cycle for the PS3, that will be up to 2016 maybe longer; Sony still has ground to makeup, at the beginning they sold there first two models at a lost.

yep i'd say a tentative dev kit like the ones factor 5 had way back in 2005-6 for when they started working on lair,it got upgraded as time went by.
Don't even think the cell was finished when lair started pre production.
Something tells me next gen will start 2014-15!!

It's looking less and less like the PS4 is going to have backwards compatibility so it would be pretty suicidal to get everyone focused on it this early in a year as big as 2013 for exclusives and 3rd party games. Yes the PS2 had games coming for years to come but the big ones landed at the very end before PS3 came out.

I can't see Sony doing this in March, maybe Microsoft since they have nothing to lose now that PS3 has outshipped it.

March is much sooner than I would expect for a new console announcement from Sony. I was thinking it might be a big part of their E3 conference this year. If the plan is give the consoles their own show and save E3 for next-gen game announcements then there better be some stellar game announcements at E3. Last years E3 was pretty sad for Sony...

Either way, I just want some specs. I need to know if I can praise or complain about the new hardware. Are they selling out and going x86 AMD like the rumours say, or are they keeping true to their creed and breaking ground with new technology? If they go with the x86 AMD approach then there wont be much to argue about between the new Sony/MS consoles. They'll be more or less interchangeable, and easy for devs to cross-develop for. And lets not even get on the topic of backwards compatibility, or used game lockouts...

I find it difficult to believe that Sony could produce a bleeding edge console for $350. Not without selling at a loss for a while again anyway. I was still expecting a $450 - $499 launch price for PS4. If it's any cheaper than that, I'm worried we might just get what we pay for...

Honestly speaking I think the PS3 has at least until the end of 2014 to be in the limelight. I would like the PS4 to be released late 2014 or 2015. That would be ideal. I see no need to have another console anytime soon. As far as the price for a PS4 $350-400 is good, but more importantly how much are the games going to cost? I'm not cheap, but spending $65 (including tax) for a game is quite much unless I consider the game a must have (i.e, MGS, Dark Souls, Gran Turismo etc.). If the games are going to be $69.99 or more then I will start waiting for price cuts. >_>

If this happens, it would be a pretty lame and barebones E3 for all unless they have secretly been developing Uncharted 4, inFamous 3, Grand Turismo 6, and Killzone 4 to be ready for launch.

I actually think they got a *lot* in store for the next gen already. Including new exclusive IPs. In fact, if they unveil the new PS prior to E3 that pretty much confirms they got stuff in their sleeves, or they'd wait 'till E3.

Just think about how much is at stake here. The economic challenges for Sony, the entirely new competitors in the horizon (Shield, Steambox, Ouyo) with risk of eating up each their share of the market - they need to kick off the next generation with a gigantic bang.

They do need to, but I'm skeptical that they can. I don't think I've ever seen a console roll-out that wasn't rocky and lacking titles. If I'm right, then focusing on PS4 so early could damage interest in a number of titles for PS3.

Exactly. If they announce the PS4 pre-E3, they're going to need a seriously impressive line-up of new games to show off to save E3.

World; Keep in mind they've got the experience from three consoles and two portables launches to float on now. And I believe Sony got a big bucket of cold water in their face with the Vita launch. They *have* to do things right this time around - and I believe they will. I got faith. :)

The games for the PS3 this year are mostly 3rd party and Sony don't control those releases. But this pretty much explains why *all* big titles for 2013 are scheduled before summer. They will be the final big salute before all eyes turn on the next generation.

Another very important factor here is that the change of architecture (if true) means the developers can write good and stable code *much* faster due to experience, good documentation and mature tools and well tested programming libraries. And that means good quality games faster, and more ambitious projects can come to life sooner too.

You might be right about things coming out before summer, though I'm not optimistic Beyond: TS will hit that mark and if the architecture IS changed The Last Guardian may have to release on PS3.

I have a very strong feeling that the PS4 architecture won't be overly different from the PS3. Considering the amount of grief developers gave Sony over the 'difficulty' of programming for the PS3, they should have made the smart choice of keeping it as similar as possible, that way we won't have to lose the first 2 years because of crappy devs.

EDIT: I was assuming that the change in architecture would be another PS2-PS3 thing. If they can change it for the better, that'd be amazing.

The thing about E3 announcements is, most of the major first party devs are already working on games for the PS3, UNLESS, those devs really are working on the PS4 and they have just been keeping it quiet. Either that, or they are bringing their games out on both?

Given the reason why all those devs of said games have been relatively quiet probably ensures they are working on next gen games. ND has TLoU due, and that's it, remember they have a second team, presumably they are working on a next gen uncharted or new ip.

If it's true that will be under 7 years that the PS3 has been out. PS2 came out in 2000; so yah, technology moves.

Unless something dramatic comes out say like GTA 5 with better graphics on the PS4 or Metal Gear Solid or something like that I will wait for my usual year after a console has been released and wait for bugs etc.

I could cave and say sod it but I doubt it as if not many of my mates and clan get either console I'll be gaming on my own for a while. Once I get a new console im not keeping the PS3 or the 360 they will go towards getting a new console simply as I don't have the room for 2 more consoles.

That's funny, because one of the higher ups at Sony has recently gone on record to say that Sony are planning a big announcement in regards to their next console for E3, and that it could even happen before that, meaning April. Which seems to fit with this info.

The funny thing is, will there REALLY be a difference in quality between a a PS3 and PS4 game that release at the same time.

I'm ready to hear some information from Sony concerning the PS4. The price, specs, and the type of games will determine how soon I'll get one. I'm hoping they'll make me wish I'd started saving money for it already.

I don't have money to invest in a new platform anytime soon. I like knowing though that when I do become ready to buy, a larger pool of games should be available and possibly lower priced.
I'm excited though to see the new specs and the sorts games that represent the next leap in visuals and game design.
It's pretty cool to think that games from the likes of Naughty Dog, Santa Monica, crytek and many others have accomplished feats that just couldn't have been done to nearly the same effect on prior generations of hardware. I don't doubt we'll see games that have that effect once again into the next-gen.

Reckon ill just grab a PlayStation this time around - I'm finding the positioning of the Xbox sticks gives me arthritis pain in my left thumb.

Wouldn't it be nice if Gears and Halo were allowed on the PC - there'd be zero reason to own an xbox

Both went to PC in the early days but the ports were done so horribly nobody wanted them. If they had been ported over correctly, then maybe they would've stayed on PC with the later ones.

And as far as I'm concerned, even with those titles, there's still no reason to own an Xbox. And I agree, the controller setups are horrible.

march sounds about right, theres just not enough time to announce new systems, new features, new games, in a 1 or so hour press conference E3 allows!
MUCH better off announcing it beforehand giving developers a little extra leeway to finish up demos to show at E3.

as for the ps4 releasing before the 720 i seriously doubt it.
M$ has had a extra year to work on it, there in a MUCH better financial position than $onys in, they havent wasted half their R&D time developing a portable console, ect, ect.
not to mention the 720 is suppose to be FAR more powerful!
8GB of RAM apposed to 4, a OCTA CPU appose to a quad, ect, ect.
plus M$ seem allot more ready than $ony do.
i wouldent be surprised to see $ony announce the ps4 in feb though, at the same event they held for the vita.
$ony being a japanese company after all.

million dollar question is specs.
its funny how every time new systems come out you always get rumors saying this, than rumors saying that, than just before they come out rumors saying back to the original.
even happened now, first leaked specs said the ps4 would use the new updated cell chip.
than rumors said nope its AMDs liverpool codenamed APU.
and now were back to the cell.

eh, whatever it is i just hope $ony does not chuck a vita!
IE overpriced, seriously limited and restrictive both in hardware and software abilities, next to zero third party support, and a all the first party games released at launch and nothing thereafter for a year!
$ony would be best off holding till they can launch it with a bang, as kaz said at CES we dont talk about something till we can show it off in fashion.
$ony REALLY needs to have the full weight of ALL their developers behind them!
ND, sony SM, MM, GG, SP, insomniac, bend studio, london studio, ect, ect.
and of course third part support, exclusives even better.
point being if there going to announce the ps4, wait till you have a heap of games to talk about.
if its like the vita, a new uncharted, a few new IPs, people are not going to be interested they will say yea been there done that wake me up when we see more.
but if they have the full support of their studios, every one showing off what there doing, than thats really going to make people stand up and take notice!
one studio that absolutely MUST be on the front line is $ony jappan studio!
its a absolute crime $ony has not used them much this gen!
yea they did that crappy ape escape mini game, and some PSN games, but the big budget amazing titles there known for have been MIA.
the last guardian, something lorded and showed off, rumored, since freaking 04!
and were still yet to see anything on it, hell is it even still in development!?

when $ony announces the ps4, they need to do so in full force.
have every studio behind you showing off what there doing.
if not, than delay the announcement and stay mum till they are ready.
give them a good boot up the backside and show them what happened to liverpool studio, yea that should give them a good scare!

I don't understand why these rumours get so much attention. They're just that, rumours. And everyone always takes it as fact. There are also conflicting rumours from different sources which is why it's hard to believe. That and the fact the PS3 can last SO much longer + Sony saying that they have no interest in making new console yet... Yeah, I don't see it coming anytime soon.
