No Multiplayer For The Order: 1886, Will Run At 30FPS

Were you hoping for some multiplayer fun in The Order: 1886?

Well, you're about to be disappointed. Ready at Dawn founder Andrea Pessino was asked several pressing questions on Twitter, and one of them included the issue of multiplayer. Pessino's response:

"No multiplayer. It is a single player, third person action adventure game."

Pessino's explanation is simply that it's "better to do one thing well than a whole bunch half-assed." That, I can certainly appreciate. Pessino added that the team is working hard to produce a single-player experience everyone will enjoy, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. Unfortunately, this also means that co-op play is out, and that could've been pretty cool.

As for the technical side, as reported by GamingBolt, the game will run at 1080p and 30 frames per second. Studio boss Ru Weerasuriya said they weren't "currently aiming for 60FPS." Yeah, for first-person shooters and fighters, that makes sense, but it isn't necessary for third-person shooters, or at least that's the contention.

Does any of this really disappoint you, or are you as excited as ever for The Order: 1886?

As long as it's a steady 30 FPS, I have no issues.

Not really. The 30 frames mmmmmaybe, but as long as it is locked at that or better I am would be okay with it myself. That and the games, with all the potential it looks to have, delivers and satisfying experience.

MP could come later as a separate games or digital download, free-to-play, if Sony asks them to. I would, if I was them, wait and see how the single player works out in development and launch. Then take that and make an interesting followup Mp experience.

Who knows. Hope its good.

Keep playing!

I wish it was 60fps given the PS4' capabilities. However from what I've heard about the games graphical achievements it may have been a difficult task to achieve. 30fps is never a deal breaker for me and never has been. So this isn't upsetting at all.

And no co-op? Oh well. I go into every announcement assuming it's single player until all the details are released. So no big deal.

The thing is, everyone has turned to fps as an absolute requirement for games now. If a game doens't have 60fps, it is crap.

There are SOOOOO many people out there who don't even undersatnd what fps means, but yet argue for it.

Sucker Punch said it best, third person action games don't require any higher than 30fps, 60fps is only great for games that require quick reflexes like FPS titles.

This has me more excited. There are several games that have had very good single player experiences but had the potential to be even better had the developers not divided their focus and tacked on a pointless multiplayer. A good example is the new Tomb Raider.

I agree. It's high time we had a AAA game where all the focus was placed on its single player campaign. Its not like we don't have options when it comes to co-op or MP with most games.

Great news, that just means even more resources are being put into the SP experience.

This game just gets better. I'm glad these guys threw out the possibilities of MP.

Regarding the fps, 60 would have been sweet, but I don't mind the 30 at all.

I'm very impressed and more happy than ever to be a PS4 owner with this news, actually -- this and Infamous are living proof that Sony has enough sense not to force their developers to shoehorn multiplayer into games clearly designed for single player. I'm not always anti-multiplayer, but it can drag out development processes and leech resources away from the single player experience.

I'd guess more games will have multiplayer suites as we move further into PS4's lifecycle, simply because developers will have more time to implement them alongside the single player campaigns. But it's refreshing to see two huge exclusives aren't getting bogged down (or risking delays!) with frivolous MP.

You got a good point about Sony not shoehorning MP into their productions. This is indeed good news from that perspective.

I'm probably the only soul here that has no interest in this game. However, even if I were interested, it wouldn't be for some halfassed multiplayer component, but rather the diverse singleplayer story.

As for the frame rate? I'm not bothered by this at all, nor should any sane individual care. While most people may see 30 fps as being slow or unimportant, I've found that this specific rate is perfect for action adventure games, with 60 fps being the desired rate for shooters and racing games.

Why doesn't this game interest you?

Also I've grown to accept that consoles will forever lock in at around 30fps. I'll enjoy the 60+fps on my PC :)

Most of the PS4 releases are running at 60fps. This generation is certainly gearing up towards generally running at that. I imagine by the end of the generation most AAA titles will run at 60 and 80-90% of most games will.

That's just a guess based on what's available and last gen of course.

@LimitedVertigo; it just doesn't interest me in the slightest. I'd probably find the whole experience to be extremely dull and boring, and have no interest in the gameplay or story concepts.

Just a personal preference, and it's one that I'm sure a lot of you will disagree with. :p

wiiplay,

What type of games do you like? Is it the fact that it's a 3rd person shooter? I'm just curious as to what you don't like about the game.

bigrailer,

And I'm sure there have been graphical compromises because of that framerate. Which is why you see this particular game saying screw the 60fps in favor of a more detailed game.

I'm looking forward to seeing what ND does with the PS4 tech.

I'm with you wiiplay. This game does not interest me at all either.

I guess my problem with it is the setting in which the game is set - can't really explain it more. Just not my cup of tea.

LimitedVertigo, I honestly don't know where to start.

First, I dislike the entire concept. The story being set in an alternate version of London, with knights trying to rid the world of monsters. That alone is uninteresting. The E3 trailer didn't impress me, either. It looked to be boring, slow, dark and full of fog. That's too many cliches for a single horror game, if you ask me.
I'm also not that big of a fan of the survival horror genre, as it just bores me to death. Zombies? Monsters? Mutants? No thank you. I just feel like I'm doing the same general thing, over and over again. Plus, again with the cliches. If The Order: 1886 featured something new and unique, I'd at least consider it. Unfortunately, I don't see anything new or unique here.

Regarding the whole 'new and unique' bit? I'm starting to question my love and devotion towards the video game industry as a whole, as everything is going to hell. There's nothing new, and the extremely heavy focus on money and microtransactions disgusts me. I'm no longer a gamer, but a consumer of bland products.

Guess that's the magic of opinions. Everyone's got something to say. :)

wiiplay,

Those are legitimate reasons to not be interested in this game. Yet a lot of the reasons you listed are the very reason I'm interested in the game. I can't get into fighting games anymore because my love for them died with the arcades.

Honestly, I don't know your age but perhaps you've just grown older and lost interest in a hobby that once connected with you. I also find less games satisfying my wants but they are still out there. What is your favorite genre? Mine is RPGs and I'll be the first to tell you this past generation (360/PS3) was by far the worst years of gaming I've had in regards to RPGs.

LimitedVertigo, I'm honestly not sure if I have a favourite genre. I guess it really does depend on the game itself, and if I find it 'fun'. Like, I enjoy first person shooters, but dislike the top shooters of this generation. (being COD and Battlefield)
The main FPS that I adore is Team Fortress 2.

I also rather enjoy third person action games, like the Grand Theft Auto series. Though, Grand Theft Auto: V greatly lowered my love of the series, as I honestly believe that the microtransaction-focused online mode is an absolute mess. Just give me a Free Roam mode, like the one that was in GTA 4. Give me weapons and health kits on the street. The classic GTA action is missing from 5, and that saddens me. :(

Also, it isn't that I dislike gaming, or that I am growing out of it. It's just, most of the games from 2011-now bore me. That's actually the reason I decided to become a video game developer, so that I can create games that I myself would rightfully enjoy. Games that express what the industry once was. Before gaming was just another product on the shelf. Back when it was art, and made to entertain the masses.

Though, I suppose if I must choose a single genre as a favourite, it would be 'first person'. Not necessarily a first person shooter, but nearly anything based in a first person visual perspective. Though, the game would also have to be fun and creative. Sadly, I no longer see PlayStation or Xbox as being a 'gaming' brand, but rather a home entertainment and media brand. This is especially true on the Xbox side. Gaming, in my mind, belongs exclusively to Nintendo now. Nintendo is still putting in an effort to design unique hardware, that can alter the way that you interact with your in-game world. Nintendo is focusing primarily on the fun aspect of gaming, while Sony is doing more of a hybrid. A nice hybrid, mind you.

Sorry for going on about nothing, LimitedVertigo. Just, this entire industry is like a second home to me. When I see the industry heading down the wrong path, I get very emotional, sometimes even angry.

Ok, I am glad it doesn't have competitve MP but it would have been a bonus to have 4 player COOP. With that said I am excited for this game. 1080p and 30FPS with the PS4 hardware would make this almost unplayable on the X1. Maybe 720p and 30FPS if they are lucky. Glad it's an exclusive. My top 3 most anticipated games for the PS4 are:
1. The Order 1886
2. inFAMOUS Second Son
3. Child of Light
There are going to be some special games released in 2014!

People assume that quite often.

"Oh I bet the PS4 couldn't handle it"

What is more likely, is that they targetted 30fps from a design point from the beginning. I believe that there is potential to push past 30fps, and possibly reach 60, but not without a lot more development work, and this game has to release at some point.

60fps is not the industry standard, and has risen to mainstream because it was being used as a point of difference between the PS4 and XB1. Infamous SS also runs at 30fps, Sucker Punch explained the reason for this themselves, which is basically that they always intended to run 30fps because TPS games don't require any higher than 30fps, they think it is the sweet spot.

technically wise couldnt be more excited for this because of all the hype, and seeing what they were able to do with the PSP.
game wise, well, the were trying to make a game for everyone kinda worries me.
gotta love it how he makes a statement in the first part of the sentence, than in the second part he goes and totally contradicts that.

Ben misquoted him.

He actually said "we are trying to create a SP experience you will enjoy", when directly replying to someones question about MP on twitter.

He doesn't say "everyone" will enjoy. He clearly means from a quality point of view.

I read No Multiplayer as "No need to buy it day one." People are going to hate me for saying that, but I'm sure I'm not the only person who feels this way. I also have a feeling that the price is going to drop rather quickly.
