Can Sledgehammer Deliver The "Best Call Of Duty Ever?"

The rumors were true: Sledgehammer Games will be heading up development on the next Call of Duty installment.

Infinity Ward and Treyarch have traded off making CoD titles throughout the last generation. Sledgehammer was originally slated to develop a third-person spin-off for the franchise, but that project got axed. Instead, the team assisted Infinity Ward with Modern Warfare 3.

Now, however, it's Sledgehammer's time to shine. Activision is awfully confident in the studio's ability, too, as Activision CEO Bobby Kotick said this new CoD entry is "perhaps the best Call of Duty game ever created." A bold statement but then again, that's the only kind of statement this guy makes. We don't have any concrete details on the game just yet, but that's not important.

No, right now, what's important is this: Sledgehammer hasn't replaced Infinity Ward and Treyarch; they've merely joined the CoD family. This means Activision is moving to a three-year development cycle with three different teams. Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg said this will allow their designers to infuse more life into the brand. The extra time should also result in more polish and innovation (ideally).

Okay, now I'm a little more interested in this franchise. A little.

That's a pretty low bar to clear.

The game probably already went gold a few weeks after the last one came out. I wouldn't mind working on the game; so much time to pursue other passions.

They are probably laughing at gamers in their office while pretending to work.

Three year development cycles should be good for the actual development of these games but we will still see yearly releases of the a Call of Duty franchise. I don't see a break in sight. I was fatigued this last generation. Don't know if I could take much more.

I take it that this means longer and meatier campaigns? My interest is piqued, but they still need to do a lot more with the brand than add a year's development time to get me to buy.

Yeah, I'm interested. A new team should mean lots of new ideas. It's always good to have some fresh blood. As stated, longer development time should mean more polish. Also, this should mean more competition between teams. I don't see a downside to this.

I like that they have 3 years to work on their game now.

But I doubt anything great will come from it.

They have to learn from the giant mistake IW made this year with a game designed primarily for snipers and campers that has turned Ghosts into the worst COD since COD3. Smaller, faster, adrenaline inducing maps are what made COD great.

I think I follow you, but I'm not sure...
There are these funny little things called a 'comma' and a 'period' that put meaning into a run-on sentence! They look like this: , and .

Remember, "Punctuation saves lives!"

"Let's eat grandma!"
"Let's eat, grandma!"

There won't be ANY major quality improvements in this series until they GET A NEW ENGINE.

Seriously.

Why not just give IW the next game off, and have them spend the next 3 years developing a brand new engine.
