Could The PS4 And Xbox 720 Be Headed For A Holiday Showdown?
So the latest update is that both Sony and Microsoft will unveil their new machines in only two months time.
Reports have varied, but it seems that Sony isn't interested in giving Microsoft a head-start this time around and at this rate, there's every chance that both consoles will release close to one another. Or at least, closer than before.
The PS2 and Xbox were a year apart and so were the PS3 and 360; could we finally be looking at a launch showdown to kick off the new generation? And if so, who would have the edge? Let's say both consoles have about the same price and similar hardware statistics; perhaps that would simply continue the current trend, which involves Microsoft dominating domestically and Sony rising in other regions, especially Europe and Japan. Then again, if we're looking at significant statistic and cost discrepancies, momentum could adjust accordingly.
And if they both happened to arrive for this year's holiday rush, can you imagine the headlines and corresponding community fallout? Forums would explode; it'd be a resurrection of the old-school console wars complete with total adolescent inanity and hostility from both sides. I wish that wouldn't happen but it's probably inevitable. So what do you think will happen if Sony and Microsoft release their new consoles within a month of each other, or something like that? Which company would have the edge?

The problem is, MS is not afraid to bleed away loads of money. They have very deep pockets and can afford to sell the 720 at a loss for years to come. And they will continue to spend millions securing AAA exclusives to their console.
The only thing that could stop the 720 in its tracks is if Sony somehow gets those AAA exclusives to its own console.
Because it doesn't matter how powerful a console is, if it doesn't have the games people want to play, then it will fail or lag behind the leading console that does have those exclusives.
1st party games are good and all. But to win over the mainstream audiences, Sony really needs to get 3rd party exclusives. Because if all the people supporting MS see that they won't ever be able to play X game on their 720, they will ditch it and buy a PS4.
But most importantly, Sony will need good leadership and someone that is not afraid to take greater risks than MS.
Here's hoping that Sony can come up with a winning strategy.

Sony is notoriously bad at self promotion. I can only recall a few advertising campaigns that were ever any good; The old Crash Bandicoot ads where Crash brags outside the Nintendo Office; The PS9 ad that came out around PS2 launch (which was amazing!); And, of course, the Kevin Butler ads. Does anyone remember that creepy baby ad Sony did for PS3 back when it launched? eugh... WTF was that?
Microsoft typically has better advertising, and a LOT more of it. It'll be everywhere. Not to mention their bags of money they like to throw around to secure exclusive deals.
And of course there's the typical rampant Sony hate from Gamestop/EB employees to contend with...
Time will tell. For me, I just can't wait for some official news about the hardware. I'm sick of rumours!

When PS3 launched all Sony had to do was let it speak for itself. None of that bizarre absurdity required. I am sure they have learned that lesson.

The gloves have to come off and they need to do as much "smearing" as MS gets the paid off "journalists" to do. It's time to expose Microsoft as the fraud they are, nickel-and-diming stiffs, charging for online play, ripping their so-called "great" community of CoD cheats, blasting Microsoft's Q&A and touting their exclusives. Perhaps trying to convince Bobby Kotick that he's on the wrong side wouldn't hurt. It's simply time to beat some sense into the dumb Americans and British teens and fanboys who blindly waste their money on a company that only cares about their wallets and not Q&A.
It's now-or-never for Sony in regards to the PS4. The system has to be a rousing success immediately. Kaz Hirai knows it. We all know it. I know a lot of people are angry at MS for stiffing them; even if some of them are dumb pirates trying to make a few bucks off of XBL. There are people willing to change sides. Sony wows them, it's a big help.
Oh yeah. Make sure cross-play is also available right away. People seem to get hard over it over in MS-land. Why, I don't know.

"SMEAR" may be too strong a word but I agree that MS needs to be called out on their "ILLUSION" of benefiting its customers. I have always felt like they were trying to trick me into believing that I should pay for things that I don't want or need. Live has always felt like a medium between Nintendo and Sony somehow.

Who has the edge early on? We all know Microsoft will just absolutely bombard all forms of media with adverstising. They will will also shell out big time cash for timed exclusitivity deals. Advantage MS. hehe. God have mercy on my soul if Kinect's advertising budget is any indicator of the amount of next gen Xbox advertising I must be forced to endure early on. :(
Sony does have better first party developers but will their relatively low dollar advertising budget get in the way of that?

rumors put it at a 8 core appose to the ps4s peasilly quad core!
8GBs of RAM, appose to maximum 4GBs $ony is apparently still considering only 2GBs how pathetic!
though IF there was complete parity, M$ would still have the advantage simply because they have always had a better relationship with third party developers.
and like it or not, but exclusives are going to be even rarer next gen!
not to mention M$ actually advertises their games!
the city was absolutely flooded with halo 4 propaganda months before release!
GOWA is releasing in 2 months time, wheres those posters?
hell, wheres a single player demonstration thats not the one that was shown at E3 last year!?
gotta love it how on the recent blog, the developers were asked so many times wheres the campaign, and the developers said were as excited as you are about it and cant wait to unveil it.
WTF is this, unveiling is things you do 4+ months before release, not when your games due out in less than 2 months!
especially when said game, was up until now, a SP only game!
sigh, and $ony wonder why there bleeding money and have been ever since the ps3 released!
poor marketing, poor decisions ie canceling 8 days and the getaway 3 for a crappy kids game, and things like GOWA.
THATS why your in the financial disaster you are $ony!

Also, you have no idea what the PS4 specs are going to be. You act like you are the poor man's Prachter. Better to wait and see then speculate and spout your Anti-Sony poison campaign over and over again! You are so sick of this generation and how it hasn't innovated enough yet your posts are exactly that, non-innovative and the same over and over. Practice what you preach will ya. Just reading your last post it sounds like you just got out of bed with Microsoft and are smoking a cigarette! It would make sense for you to leave this site and go to a Microsoft site so you could gush loving honey words to your fellow Xbots. However, it's not about that. It's about complaining and unfortunately you find Sony the perfect platform for complaining. You __________ are the ultimate troll.

its going to be interesting to see how developers code for multi CPUs.
im getting a i7 3930K which is a hex core CPU, if the 720 is a oct core and ps4 is a quad theres a nice base balance.
as for the RAM, speed is irrelevant as cervat said give me 32GBs of slow RAM over 16GBs of fast RAM any day of the week!
ESPECIALLY next gen when these things are going to try to be much more multimedia machines.
this gen RAM was a little less important because people were not that fussed with being able to run net browsers, the playstation store, stream music, and play a game.
next gen thats what its all going to be about.
not to mention the 360s OS is FAR more efficient than the ps3s OS, so if anyone should have more RAM its $ony!
im really, really, REALLY worried $ony is doing a vita with the ps4!
ie skimping on the hardware and features because they cant afford to release another 600 dollar system.
if they do its shut the gates there finished!
WHOLE point of playstation has always been to be THE most powerful system of its time.
i really hope they dont forget that!

As for pizza hut, you get this good deal, but notice somethings off. The pizza is small and there is nothing but grease. You take a bite and enjoy the flavor. Then you start to realize that the grease is whats giving it its flavor, and not the actual pizza. Nintendo is pap murphys. Cheap, delicious pizza. Of course ninty has decided to give their pizza motion controls so i haven't eaten there in awhile.
Ouya is going to be like Ceasers. Super cheap, and for a good reason.

I really think Sony has the edge at launch. If they are able to come up with the launch line up I am hoping for it will be a slaughter! If they can give us an awesome console for $399 Microsoft will struggle to keep up this next gen. Sony's exclusives are so great and we should see some outstanding exclusives at launch. Going to be fun finding out what Sony has up it's sleeve!

Sony spent 2 billion dollars in R&D on the PS3 & sold at a loss for years,MS lost billions on the xbox1 and pissed away 1 billion fixing rrods & dodgy disc drives on the xbox360,i'm sure they'd both like to make their money back & then some before releasing a new wave of consoles into a market that at the moments is fluctuating at best....plus i love my ps3 and want The Last Guardian to blow the sh!t out of everything that came before it on any platform.....then PS4 can come out.

Launch consoles tend to have more first party games than 3rd party. Barring Call of Duty from that list, I suspect Sony will have the edge. Sony has a very strong first party list to pick from. Not that Microsoft doesn't have a solid list themselves, I just believe variety is always better. So long it's not all junk.
If both consoles are priced the same, I think you might see the PlayStation come out on top by a few thousand.
Should Microsoft actually beat out Sony on initial price point, I think we could have very different results regardless of available launch titles. Microsoft has been successful with their $99 360 under contract. I expect to see many $199 deals with monthly fees for the next Xbox. That will hurt Sony bad if they cannot offer the same deal.

If I ever do actually want to play anything that comes out on the new X-box, I will have plenty of friends that will get one, so why waste my own money?
