Which Franchise Needs To Be Rebooted This Generation?

"Reboots" have become quite common lately. We're seeing plenty; last year's Tomb Raider reboot did very well, and we're even getting another reboot later this month (Thief).

Developers decide to reboot franchises for a few reasons. For instance, if the series has started to fade and it's in desperate need of an overhaul (ala Tomb Raider) or, as in the case of Thief, the IP has been dormant for a long time.

So, which long-running series most needs a reboot in the new generation? Is it Resident Evil, the franchise that once defined survival/horror? Operation Raccoon City was less than mediocre and Resident Evil 6, while decent, really annoyed every survival/horror purist out there. Then again, maybe RE won't need to be rebooted because The Evil Within will hit big, and that'll be the only survival/horror series we require.

Or, does it need to be Call of Duty? Wouldn't it be interesting if developer Sledgehammer Games called this year's Call of Duty a "reboot?" They're at the helm for this year's entry, and that series could use an overhaul. It's hardly unpopular and we see a new one every damn year, so perhaps "reboot" is too strong a term, but CoD definitely needs something. Of course, there's the old standby: Final Fantasy. But Square Enix has their heads so far up their asses, they'd probably be shocked and stupefied to hear that fans want FF to be rebooted. I can see it now: "'gasp' Seriously?! B-b-but...everyone loves Final Fantasy!"

Well, what franchise gets your vote for a reboot?

Um Jammer Lammy, Parappa the Rapper, Gitaroo man. Hell, music games in general, I want more rhythm based music games and less dancing and other lame things.

I'd like to see Ace Combat rebooted. I was pretty disappointed with Assault Horizon. It was so different from previous titles that I don't plan to buy any future releases unless it's rebooted.

I found Dark Cloud to be kind of simple in a way, but I couldn't stop playing it. Level 5 got my attention with Dark Cloud, so I was really looking forward to White Knight Chronicles. I feel like WKC had a lot of potential, yet they missed the mark. Dark Cloud, in my opinion, is a better game and I would welcome a reboot.

So then as soon as a new IP is created there could never be a sequel because then it wouldn't be "new" anymore, right? ;-)

None, there's no franchise that 'needs' to be rebooted. If it's over let it rest in peace, if it's unfinished *cough*LoK*cough* finish it. If you just want to make anoher game in the same genre, then do so, making it a reboot of an older series is just a way to try to milk sales from the name. Reboots can be pretty great, but so can any properly made game, it doesn't make them necessary.

Also, I think I've said this before, but FF can't be rebooted. You can't reboot a series where every main entry is effectively an entirely different game. Whatever game they called a reboot could be called FFXVI just as easily.

Though it is Nintendo...

Star Tropics!

Such an overwhelmingly underrated adventure game! I suppose no one thinks about it due to the rise of the Legend of Zelda, but Star Tropics was awesome.

As far as non-Nintendo-only titles... hm... I'd have to say Summoner. Summoner had a lot of potential and its scale was pretty darn impressive considering how early in the life of the PS2 it released. With the soaring success of Dragon Age, Summoner could even be given new life while still keeping roughly the same system (if not given proper enhancing). After that, I'd have to agree with the call for Dark Cloud but also add Rogue Galaxy. RG wouldn't necessarily need a reboot though - but a continuation. Level 5 created something fantastic with Rogue Galaxy and I'd like to see even more in that universe.

rainbow six desperately needs a reboot, its a shame patriots did not seem to sit well with ubisoft higher ups, probably too contreversial and they were worried about sales.
perfect example how publishers are destroying the industry!
id love to see a reboot of the SWAT franchise as well, i remember playing 4 for hours on end such a awesome game!
alone in the dark, silent hill, resident evil, the suffering, hell pretty much every horror genre could use a reboot too.
yakuza could be another one, i just wish that game would come to the realization that one its not 1926 anymore, and two fetch quests ARE NOT FUN!
really really loved 3, but the massive essay text boxes to understand the story really destroyed it for me.
especially when you would have a cut scene, than cut to a text box, than cut to a cut scene, and so on.
they already had cut scenes, so why cant we just keep it at that!?
why put 200000 lines of text for people to understand the story when it can be explained in a simple cut scene?
and last but not least the fetch quests, there never fun, and these were made worse by no instructions.
go into the city and find the girl who stormed out of the house upset.
where is she?
good question, just go find her!
yea, i think were going to need a little more instructions than that!
when are developers going to understand wondering around in circles for hours IS NOT FUN!?
seriously, why cant we have a big fat X on the map so you know where to go?
why must everything be as painful and mind numbingly boring as possible?

I would like the Call of Duty games to go back to their WW2 roots - those were much more enjoyable and seemed more authentic than the bombastic Hollywood-ized MW, Blops, World at War and Ghosts games.

World at War was WWII, and MW was fantastic. Though I agree that a change of scenery would benefit the series, and I am kind of missing the WWII games now.

I probably sound like a broken record but I remain an outspoken advocate for a Resident Evil reboot. The plot and acting were ridiculous from the get-go simply because of the mid-90s timeframe it was released. Storylines, pacing, and certainly voice acting have come a long, long, LONG way since the first Resident Evil's debut. Rather than keep the downright ludicrous, convoluted plotline of the main games going (to say nothing of the spinoffs I'm skeptical anyone inside or out of Capcom keeps any track of) simply start over!

The series' original framework begs for a new game: an elite military investigative unit visits sleepy Raccoon City to investigate troubling reports from the outskirts of town. The first part of the game could take place in the haunted mansion, and then the game could open up to let players go into Raccoon City proper -- take the best elements of Resident Evil 1 AND 2, in other words. Capcom could ditch or reinvent characters as they saw fit. Modern production values, from graphics to voice acting to gameplay, could all be implemented. Doesn't that sound great?!

This plan makes so much sense I have to think Capcom is at least investigating the possibility. Japanese companies have just been so obstinate and frustrating for the last generation though, so I don't want to get my hopes up.

It's a Nintendo franchise but it needs to be said: Metroid. It blows my mind Nintendo seems uninterested in making Metroid games these days. Super Metroid is one of the greatest games ever made, the Metroid Prime games were quite good too, so it's not like the series doesn't work in 3D. I know it's not their biggest seller, but 1) they already exploit the Mario character in WAY too many series as it is, so for goodness sake, mix it up! and 2) a dark, isolated space exploration and combat game with a story that's "shown" rather than "told" is just a golden formula. I don't think anyone cares about continuity from previous Metroid games (the Prime ones were pretty much a reboot, anyway) so ditch any pretense of furthering previous storylines and just make the best damn metroid game you can. Revisit the classic planets (shoot, be able to visit like three in one game!!! How awesome would that be?), finally let players fly around in Samus' badass ship both on and between planets, and goodness let me fight METROIDS!

*sigh* a man can dream...
