Sony: About Half Of PlayStation 4 Owners Are Plus Members

If you want to play games online on the PlayStation 4, you need to be a PlayStation Plus member.

So, it should come as no surprise that nearly half of all PS4 users around the world are indeed Plus subscribers. Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai revealed the number during the company's latest financial call.

Sony sold 4.2 million PS4 units worldwide in 2013, although there's no knowing how many were sold in January. Given that 4.2 million number, though, this means there are at least 2.1 million Plus members. Overall, Sony has revealed that over 150 million users have PlayStation Network accounts, but of course, that's free to set up and individuals can have multiple accounts. The question is, does that 2.1 million surprise you? If so, did you expect more or less?

In all honesty, I expected lots more. With everyone seemingly in love with multiplayer these days, it just doesn't seem feasible that half the consumers who bought the PS4 didn't sign up for Plus. Then again, not everyone around the world has the greatest Internet connection, either.

I think the gamers who already have PS4 aren't the hardcore multiplayers, not yet.

Plus is worth it for Outlast. So good.

I personally don't MP on my consoles...I leave that to PCs but I'll admit Plus offers so much value regardless of whether you MP or not on your consoles.

Plus is and has been worth it since it launched , free games every month and big games too , and loads of discounts , while live has always been mandatory with no free games or discounts , only allowing you to play online , and live is required to access your netflix on the xboner … or access anything that is absurd since you already pay for netflix , plus is only needed to play multiplayer games on ps4 , does not affect netflix or anything else , and even for subscription games you do not need plus .

Xboners and PC elitists will always mentioned that you don't really "own" the game with PS Plus. Personally, I couldn't care less, because with a all of the PS Plus games, I've gotten satisfied enough from finishing it alone. Seriously, at $50 a year, that's cheaper than a single new game, and the satisfaction is infinitely better.

Alejandro,
Plus offered some value when it came out but it became a must-have with the introduction of the Instant Game Collection. The IGC alone was worth the price.

I wonder how many of those PS4s are actually connected to the internet...

Half? I genuinely thought that it would be a much, much higher figure than that. Maybe PS fans don't put so much emphasis on the importance of multiplayer?

That's what I figure, since the young crowd has been on Xbox for so long.

That number seem low to me to Lawless. I would think most of the PS4 owners are hard core Sony fans and games that know the value of PS Plus.

I am honestly not surprised by this. I mean Plus specifically for the PS4 is nice because you do get Outlast and Resogun, Contrast wasn't really that big for me, so right there you make up for the majority of the fee. But There really isn't anything that BIG to play online so it isn't really necessary. I LOVE Killzone but its a series that hasn't really been huge for the majority of Playstation fans. Cod to me is a pile of crap but I would be willing to bet that 95% of those that do have plus also play Cod. Other than that there aren't really that many games that don't have extensive single player modes that you would also want to play online.

I am leaving out BF4 because most of the times I have tried to play that I haven't gotten anywhere. Either the servers were down or laggy or connection issues. So I wish I hadn't spent the money on that.

I find it pretty surprising that half of PS4 owners have chosen not to have access to online muliplayer. According to all the big publishers like EA and Activision, online multiplayer it the most important thing in the world and basically the only thing anybody plays. Hopefully this will get some people to pull their heads out of their butts and realize that there's a huge customer base for single-player-only games.

I am surprised too.

If I were to speculate as to why the amount is this low, two thoughts popped up in my mind:

One is that people probably are delaying initiating such a rolling monthly cost as long as possible, until they really really need the features. I know I would.

But it might also be an indicator that many have the PS4 as their secondary gaming platform, and paying a monthly fee is even less attractive then.
I know this is very much the case with the gamers at my workplace (that means, practically everyone). While a good majority of them also have at least one console their main platform is PC. I don't think any of them are going to pay this fee - they'll just use it for offline gaming instead.

For me personally, if it wasn't for my coop buddies on the PS4 I'd most definitely only use the PS4 for single player gaming. But... Since coop play is much of the reason I got a console in the first place, this expense can't be avoided for me. Sux. :(

It isn't a monthly cost if you buy a years worth. Black Friday and Boxing Day are the best times to buy them. $30 instead of $50, plus all the extras that it carries with it. "FREE" games on the vita, ps3, and ps4. It all adds up to huge savings even if you are "renting" them.

It *is* a monthly cost. If it is worth it or not is totally up to everyone to judge for themselves and depends on several factors, "time" being a core factor here.

But it is a cost. You pay for every month, regardless if you didn't even turn on your PS4 that month. For someone who has this console as their secondary gaming platform, I can easily imagine this cost to be very unattractive.

This membership can be a nice deal for those who's got the time and intention to use their PS4 a *lot*. But for others... Not so much. It really is individual. For me personally I don't care for the "free" games at all, I buy the games I want to play and hardly have enough time for those, let alone got time for games that I originally passed on when they were new.

I'm stunned actually. I could understand if this was the launch period and alot of them were still wrapped as gifts but having no PS+ means A) no multiplayer for most retail games and B) leaving tons of money on the table if you own either a PS3 or Vita/PSP also. Considering that a decent amount of consumers are like me and had PS+ before they even bought the PS4 that means that actually MORE than half of the PS4 buyers are not PS+ members. Eschewing the PC gamers, the majority of them are simply being fools, whether intentional or not.

I was waiting for the PlayStation Store to have more stuff before using my free Plus/etc. 'coupons.' Now I'm wondering if Sony's waiting until those are expired before they do much for PS4 online. :-(

I definitely expected more.

I mean 50% online MP rate is pretty poor for a next-gen console, when you look at the previous gen.

I wonder how many of those non-PS+ people are playing online games that don't require PS+.
