Activision On Call Of Duty 2014: Next-Gen Is The Focus

We've got more encouraging news for this year's Call of Duty entry.

In speaking with IGN, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg first confirmed that the new CoD installment - helmed by Sledgehammer Games - is a "next-gen-first development." In other words, they're focusing on making the game for next-gen platforms.

We don't have any details on the game just yet, but it's nice to know they're more interested in the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One than the "old" PS3 and Xbox 360. In addition to this focus, Hirshberg reminded us that in the new generation, there will be three studios cranking on Call of Duty. This means each new title gets a three-year development window rather than only two:

"On the two-year cycle, with the level of content we were putting in the games, it became a real horse race each and every time to get everything done that we wanted to get done. With next-gen hardware, we’ve got more capabilities than ever before to play with and we want to make sure our developers have the time to innovate, iterate, to bring the best creative vision and the most possible polish to each and every game."

As for what to expect from Sledgehammer, Hirshberg said we'll definitely see something different. "We give each of our studios a lot of independence," he said. Therefore, Sledgehammer's directive was pretty simple- "You know what makes this thing great; now go do it your way." We're willing to bet that the new studio got a bit more direction than that (companies protect their billion-dollar franchises), but it's still good to hear.

What are your expectations for this year's Call of Duty installment?

I don't have any expectations of the Call of Duty franchise since I don't play them. If I ever were to get one of these games a gift, it would be returned for store credit. I expect the masses to still buy the games yearly regardless of who's making the game.

Heck make Call of Duty Legos and it'll probably sell better than some AAA titles.

All the Lego games are solid games. So I'm sure a Lego CoD would be as well. Point is they are worth purchasing.

For the first time ever I didnt bbuy a CoD title in 2013. Not that I don't want it because Ive been contemplating getting it. But with limited time and my PS4 purchase along with 5 other games, I just haven't been able to justify it. In other words I'm looking forward to this one. My expectations aren't high but it should be enjoyable. I'm more intrigued by the fact that it's a new developer.

Can't wait to see the brand new remake of their insanely old, quick-scoping engine! /s

I expect to see another 7-8/10 game.

Far Cry classic looks better than call of duty ghosts lol.

They have worn out their welcome with a game every year coming out. People have to pay so much just to play it. 60 bucks for the game. 100 for all the little extras and the right to play on SUPERIOR servers.

People are not buying their product any more and now they will wait every two years so people will not burn out on the game.

You can bet they will try to jack the prices up on everything too.

I love fps. But Im gonna stop playing the BF series and COD series because they are just made to milk your money and not fun. Maybe I will play Killzone, until they start doing the same.

End of line.

So long as they dont make it a camperfest like they did with Ghosts - can't believe they made it into a game for ****ing snipers. Hopefully the reduced sales will have Activision demanding Sledgehammer produce a fast paced game again.

See I'm sick and tired of Call of Duty for multiple reasons, but one of them is that it's so fast paced. It sucks. People with high reflexes and great connection will always prevail. I don't like that.

Meh, every CoD multiplayer has been all about the snipers. Ever kid and his mom runs around with a sniper, quickscoping everything in sight.
