Activision On Call Of Duty 2014: Next-Gen Is The Focus
We've got more encouraging news for this year's Call of Duty entry.
In speaking with IGN, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg first confirmed that the new CoD installment - helmed by Sledgehammer Games - is a "next-gen-first development." In other words, they're focusing on making the game for next-gen platforms.
We don't have any details on the game just yet, but it's nice to know they're more interested in the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One than the "old" PS3 and Xbox 360. In addition to this focus, Hirshberg reminded us that in the new generation, there will be three studios cranking on Call of Duty. This means each new title gets a three-year development window rather than only two:
"On the two-year cycle, with the level of content we were putting in the games, it became a real horse race each and every time to get everything done that we wanted to get done. With next-gen hardware, we’ve got more capabilities than ever before to play with and we want to make sure our developers have the time to innovate, iterate, to bring the best creative vision and the most possible polish to each and every game."
As for what to expect from Sledgehammer, Hirshberg said we'll definitely see something different. "We give each of our studios a lot of independence," he said. Therefore, Sledgehammer's directive was pretty simple- "You know what makes this thing great; now go do it your way." We're willing to bet that the new studio got a bit more direction than that (companies protect their billion-dollar franchises), but it's still good to hear.
