Square Enix: FFXV "A Very High Priority Within The Company"

Well, after all this time it had better be "quite far" into development.

VideoGamer asked Square Enix producer Yoshinori Kitase about the status of Final Fantasy XV and although Kitase was a little vague, we did get an update.

First, he clarified that FFXV and Kingdom Hearts III aren't "in competition" with each other. Then, he added that the new FF installment is "quite far into development now" and it's being given "a very high priority within the company." Oh, now it has a high priority? What was it before, when it was announced as Final Fantasy Versus XIII way back in 2006? By the way, if you're wondering, they're keeping at least part of the original narrative for the project:

"Right from the start when we first it announced it as Versus XIII, the game itself was backed up by the same Crystal legend: the Fabula Nova Crystallis mythology that underpins the whole of the XIII series.

So even though it's not necessarily the same universe or the same game, they're all linked and underpinned by the backdrop of that legend. Now it's moved on--obviously the title's been changed to Final Fantasy XV--but that hasn't actually changed. The story and the world is still going to be linked and backed up by that. So yes, there is the link between XIII and XV, and they both share that mythology as a backdrop and a starting point."

Obviously, we don't yet have a release date for FFXV but at this rate, we're not sure we want it. It would have to be a lot better than the recently released Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII for us to care.

So basically it's a totally different game than what we all expected except for a few plot motivations.

It almost doesn't matter that this is a different game begun by a different dude (Nomura), the franchise has been decimated to the point where even 9+ scores might not be enough to make it sell or make up for 8 years of troubled development.

That's actual very true. If it only gets 9s it may not sell well. It will either need good advertising, 9.5+s, or super good word of mouth. Or a combination of those. I actually naively believe this game will be 9.5+..

The majority of people won't care about the delay. Only the old school fans and game critics will take it into account.

I dunno Kiryu. His complaints are legit. 8 year development is insane.

"A very high priority"? Um, well, it's your flagship series and it's been god awful for years. I would hope so.

Final Fantasy XIV is amazing which is a numbered title in their flagship series.

XIV is the only thing keeping that company afloat. An article at IGN reported as much, as well. I am loving my time in XIV.

XIV is an exception, too, Kiryu. And it has the same track record. It was awful (I played the original release for a while. Couldn't hack it.) It failed miserably, maintaining the last decade worth of FF blunders.

But the exception piece? Well... the realized it was awful and fixed it with a -tremendous- amount of fan input. Now it's good... after they admitted it was bad and let the fans help with feedback.

I bet if they spread that mentality around beyond that ONLY exception, they'd get the same results.

Perhaps Naoki Yoshida should be higher up within Square-Enix. I'd like to see him helm another FF down the road. Once FFXIV is all planned out and he's no longer needed full-time. Unless that's already happened and I'm not aware.

After what I've seen of versus XIII/XV and now what I've seen of Lightning Returns, I'm afraid that XV is going to be essentially the same type of combat system.

Everything I've seen of XV looked like a single party member action rpg and with the release of Lightning Returns I can't help but wonder if we aren't going to be seeing a lot of the same combat system.

Kingdom Hearts is great.

The question is, when you buy a Final Fantasy, do you want the excellent legacy of Final Fantasy or the excellent legacy of Kingdom Hearts?

Whatever the original idea was for the game which will work to make the game as envisioned.

So people should buy what the companies say they should buy?

That makes no sense. Branding has purpose.

Yeah, I definitely want a Final Fantasy-esque combat system. My favorite feature was taking my time to plan out my battles and making sure I spent my turns wisely.

I miss when you'd see a countdown. Bahamut and Odin in FFIV, Atma Weapon and Kefka in FFVI, and plenty in the PS1 games, if I remember correctly. Or hell, even death/fatal spells. Even though it was turn based there was always the possibility for urgency.

Also, you did all your running around between battles, not during :P

FFXV has been in development for 8 years now.

Honestly I would say that FFXIII-2 and 3 probably borrowed some of the design of the XV combat system, rather than the other way around.

FFXV is a straight up FF version of Kingdom Hearts from what we have seen. It is being developed by the Kingdom Hearts team.

HA

"We saw the reviews and current sales in Japan leading us to believe FF13 was not what everyone wanted and maybe everyone wants XV? So we will finally make that the highest priority game cause after 8 years, why the hell not."

As of now, 13-3 sold 277k in Japan. That's horribly low for a Final Fantasy game. Did they open their eyes? One can only hope so.

lol yeah. FFX HD sold over 350k in it's first week. The first FFXIII there sold 1.5 million in the first week alone.

8 years ago they said Versus 13 doesn't interact with FF13s storyline at all
high priority not really more like FF14 ARR is not being rehauled with the help of FF15s cast

i translate high priority as in the 15 cast is now finally free to work on 15

If lightning shows up in this game even for a split instance I'm going to go crap all over square enix office building.

That being said I am looking forward to this game. I trust nomura and he has had plenty of time to make this game into something amazing. All eyes are on him to deliver a game thats been 8 years in the making.

So, more Etro, Bhunivelze, L'Cie, Fal'Cie stuff? After how badly they handled all of that in the first two XIII games I'm not confident in them actually being able to explain it this time around, but okay. It's just a backdrop.

Hope it makes up for the (supposedly/apparently) bad Lightning Returns FF XIII-3.
