PS4 Tops In US In January, Nearly Doubles Xbox One Sales
Before the new generation even began, the most pressing question was obvious:
Sony should be able to win the major territories outside of North America, but can the PlayStation 4 win the US region, too? A region completely dominated by an Xbox product throughout the previous generation?
Worldwide, the latest tally was 4.2 million for PS4 and 3 million for Xbox One. Microsoft revealed that they had the top-selling console for December in the US, though...did that carry over into January? Nope. In fact, it wasn't even close.
According to the NPD results for January 2014, the PS4 is "the #1 selling game console in the US in January, still #1 worldwide. In fact, Sony boss John Koller elaborated on that statement over at the PlayStation Blog: He says the PS4 nearly doubled the sales of the nearest next-gen competitor (presumably the Xbox One).
Hell, the PS4 even overtook the previous front-runner, Nintedo's 3DS handheld. This means the PS4 led all game hardware units in January. This all being said, Microsoft did issue a press release that said the Xbox One and Xbox 360 combined to "sell the most games across all console platforms." Well, that's some consolation, I suppose. But man, the PS4 is just tearing it up right now.
