Sources: Sony Will Ditch Dual Shock Controller For PS4
Well, this is bound to generate some discussion among the long-time PlayStation faithful.
According to an inside development source speaking to CVG, Sony will abandon 16 years of the standard PlayStation gamepad in favor of a fancy new one for their next console.
It seems a designer working on an upcoming PS4/Orbis game says the new controller "has undergone numerous iterations," and few of them resemble the traditional Dual Shock. Versions within R&D development include biometric sensors on the grips and an LCD touchscreen. A second source said PlayStation engineers are "trying to emulate the same user interface philosophies as the PS Vita."
However, while it now seems clear that the Dual Shock will not be the primary controller for Sony's next machine, it's "likely" that PS3 controllers will be compatible. Well, they better be because let me explain something to you, Sony- If you force me to use touchscreen controls, which - I really don't care what anyone says - are vastly inferior to precise button inputs, I'm done with you. The entire world doesn't flip around on their smartphones all day long, ya know.
But if I can use a regular controller, I'll be fine.

Also, if true, I don't think the next generation has much of a chance of providing the same leap we had between PS2 and PS3 (not just graphics but physics etc).

This looked like a well thought out machine for me, with some customizations and thinking ahead. It is very important to remember that with a gaming-optimized, specialized operating system this hardware has the potential of performing *much* better than on a general purpose Windows machine.
In short, I'd say this is pretty much what I was hoping for. I can see myself buing this machine. Indeed I can.
Now I want to see what new the Playstation OS brings with this new gen, what new features and fun stuff it got in store for me.
I'm ready!

There's a pretty huge performance jump there.
Memory bandwidth is going from RSX's 22gb to 150gb
Gflops have gone from like 400 to about 2000
The bus width looks 256bit as well.
The A8 is an APU, housing it's own gpu on chip as well, adding even more processing.
DF is claiming there's some sort of compute chip added to help with physics and calculations.
I'm thinking it'll be a nice jump.
Not 7 years nice, but 5 years nice

$ony ditched quantity for speed this gen, and oh boy did it bite them in the a$$!
first off a good portion of the delays and high cost for the ps3 was due to both the XDR memory and cell.
secondly all the inferior ports, problems in skyrim and fallout, all thanks to the less amount of RAM with the ps3.
so did $ony learn?
sigh.
they understand and agree its better to go multi core than high speed, but when it comes to memory there the other way around.
makes no sense!
this WILL come back and bite them on the a$$, and HARD!
what really worries me too is that dev kits always have more memory than retail units, so if this is the specs for the dev units oh boy are we in trouble!
as for the power though both are supposed to be around the 1.8TFLOP range which is lower than what i was expecting and hoping, but i guess due to the state of the industry hardly surprising.
just makes me a little concerned whats going to happen with games like starwars 1313 and $Es luminous engine, ect.
im worried that instead of holding back the PC versions, developers are going to get fed up and just start making games PC exclusives, or give consoles the second crumbs.
its a shame, the transitions been far longer than weve ever seen, and also the smallest.

even with super efficient OS and other technologies helping out, 4GBs of memory just is not enough!
PCs these days come with minimum 16GB!
yes windows is a memory pig, but not 4 times the pig of console OSs!
and what about all the gaming PCs these days which come with a minimum of 32GBs?
problem is this is BY FAR the biggest time between systems, and its also by far the smallest power gap.
oh, not to mention its supposedly got 2.2GBs of VRAM!
IS THAT ALL!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
my 500 dollar netbook has that!
how can a crappy netbook have the same specs as a high end brand new game console?
most games these days have over that just in texture details!
and thats todays games, so in other words were going to see no increase.
people are wanting ps4 to support 4K gaming, how the blazing hell are you going to do that with 2GBs of video memory!?
ray tracing, higher AA, so many things people want but wont be able to have simply because these systems have PLENTY processing power but no where near enough storage, ie memory!
$ony f*cked themselves hard with the ps3, it was a powerhouse beast!
but held back because of its memory, resources, and development tools.
looks like there making the same mistake AGAIN!
as usual.........
consoles NEED at least 6GBs of RAM to really be worth the time weve waited for them, costs they wont be cheap, not to mention PC gamings making a strong comeback with indie developers, lowering costs, kickstarter, mods, ect, ect.
if consoles are going to hold off the onslaught of PC gaming, and not to mention the ever evolving mobile gaming, they need to be the biggest leap possible!
and sadly judging by current specs, there not!

I wouldn't knock all touch screen options. Love using it to score goals in FIFA on the Vita, Escape Plan and Gravity Rush.
My biggest gripe has always been the price of a second controller. $100 for a DS3 in Australia until recently... Could never justify having a spare controller that cost the third of a console. Doubt that will change if this new one has a LCD touch screen!

Well, as long as it doesn't look like those stupid boomerangs they had with the original PS3 reveal.

I have to say that the playstation controllers have always been best. Symmetry is what a controller needs for my symmetric brain. I can't stand it when controllers are offset.
However they do the next controller it needs to be symmetrical.

I'm not sure this would be a good thing, either. I would rather have the same controller with Vita integration. I love my Vita and would really like to be able to use it more with my PS3 or 4.

The idea of change isnt the issue because things evolve in this industry. But buildinf off the DS3 is what I wouod like to see if they do anything. Its a great controller, so...

@Big:
I don't think we should be too worried. Sony knows after all these years what makes a good controller. It's essential. Also remember that they've not really succeeded with *any* other kind of controller technology (I call Move a clear failure too, regardless of sales numbers) so they *will* stick to what they know works. Too much is at stake to experiment here.
So we will get a anatomically good controller with all the right buttons. The rest is just additions, just like the six-axis this generation.
@Underdog:
Hehe - I've had a similar experience with LittleBigPlanet, I was like, "why the f*ck is my sackboy looking down all the time", then it struck me, "aha - the six axis"! :D

its such a icon it will be back in one form or another.
whats probably happening is $ony found it difficult to incorporate a screen in the DS format so they decided to ditch that and use it as a separate allocation.
probably will end up like the wiiu pro controller, not the primary main controller every game supports.

here's some interesting stuff. DF doesn't normally report on bogus stuff so I'm inclined to believe it.
