Source: PS4 Sells 5.2 Million Worldwide

It really just depends on if you choose to believe the source.

Since early January, we haven't received an official worldwide sales update for the next-gen consoles. At last count, the PlayStation 4 had a significant lead, selling 4.2 million units as compared to the Xbox One's 3 million. We did, however, learn that the PS4 had outsold the Xbox One in the US in January; Sony saying their system "nearly doubled" the sales of their closest competitor.

Now, according to VGChartz, the PS4 has passed 5.2 million globally. This seems perfectly feasible but bear in mind that nothing is concrete until the official results are in. Also, don't forget that the PS4 hasn't yet launched in Japan, and there are no major territories left in which to release the Xbox One. Therefore, it appears that the PS4 will only lengthen its lead in due time...

It's still VGChartz, though. Just sayin'.

Where exactly does VG get their numbers from?

Sony and MS must provide accurate numbers due to investor and shareholder reporting. No legal way around that. The question is when will they release that information? Also they have quite a way of spinning that info. Particularly when the numbers are not to their complete satisfaction.

FatherSun,

I wouldn't expect a reply from the OP. You make some pretty good points and I too would like to see your questions answered.

@LimitedVertigo

I'm going to email VGchartz directly to see how they respond. I'll keep you posted.

I actually find it entertaining how companies strategically release information to the public. Spin is an art. MS notorious for it but they all do it.

Smoke and mirrors, soothsayers and snake oil. We can cure every illness but death they said.. Lol...

@FatherSun, I believe Sony's fiscal year-end is March 31, so we can expect some official sales numbers (with details) shortly thereafter.

@ FatherSon - VGChartz latest figures (so a good proportion of the extra million) are statistical estimates based on partial indicators and past trends (for example, when the PS4 was actually outselling the XB1 2-to-1 in the US, VGC had them as close to neck and neck with XB1 slightly ahead, because that was their best guess at the time). They revise their past data for NPD/GfK Charttrack and the like, but their last 4-5 weeks of data should always be taken with a fair grain of salt.

That said, given PS4 is still stock-limited, and that Sony have been pumping out more than a million PS4's a month, the extra million is a fair estimate (ie, if Sony are selling all they are producing, and they're producing more than a million a month, then it's not a crazy guess).

Yeah Simcoe, that's what I'm waiting for. Middle of April we will see how things are really going. Not just with sales numbers but with Sony's financial health as well.

XBoxOne numbers will be important too considering they have made changes on an executive level. They are deflecting rumors about a possible sale of the Xbox brand but if things turn terribly wrong then no CEO in their right mind would ignore that. TitanFall is more important than some may think.

@Axe99 Thanks for the details. I knew some of it but never bothered to explain it cohesively. Not even to myself. Honestly the numbers don't concern me too much. I think Sony, Nintendo and MS all play there role and I'll play just about any game on any platform but the culture is so alive, exciting and sometimes even volatile. Especially the industry as a whole.

@Father;
My attitude stems from the mere fact that independent/neutral sources by default tend to be the best source for objective information.

You do make a good point about information to the shareholders etc. But that's one thing, another thing is to believe every word from a press release as gospel truth. That's marketing, and they are *always* spun. There's always an agenda, there's always been a screening of what info to include - and more importantly, what to exclude.

VGChartz on the other hand should have a prime goal of being objective, since that is what they base their entire product on. If they are discovered to be biased or sided their entire site becomes worthless.
Nobody expects Sony or Microsoft to be unbiased or neutral.

Things are looking good for Sony, at least in the gaming department. Please release RPGs and make me come back to consoles. I've been loving Bravely Default as of late.

When PS2 originally released in October of it's release year, it was only a little over 1 million sold at the end of the following March.

PS4 is a monster, so far.

Don't you mean the previous March?

Before the PS2 made it debut in the US (in October 2000), the PS2 was at little over 1.4 million units sold. And most of those sales came form Japan.

By the end of following March (in 2001), the PS2 had already sold over 10 million units.

Well considering the PS4 sold 2:1 against the XB1 in NA during January, confirmed by official NPD numbers, then it isn't a stretch to say that it is true.

Considering that NA is the Xbox stronghold.

What are the expected numbers when looking at Japan? 250,000? 500,000? A million?

No other territories for the XBoxOne? Dont they ever plan on releasing in Japan? Last I heard was in about another year. Why bother?

Funny because I read a very delusional comment from someone somewhere stating that since Japan are basically technology whores that they will flock to the XBoxOne because of the ability to control it with voice command. It was quite a site to see that person get torn apart for that comment. Lol..

I dont know. MS are stubborn and simply do like like to declare defeat. I think they will jump to China for chance they get. To me it was not even a battle.

If they are going to grab Japan, they will have to redesign the entire console - make the console and the kinect smaller, lose the power brick, lose the windows 8 feel in the UI, and put more focus on JRPG's instead of FPS's.

Hell, if they do that, I may get one!

VGChartz tends to overreport on hardware and underreport on software, but I still use them sometimes to hit the ballpark.

Just bring the games. Let the investors and such worry about the sales numbers. We need to see games start coming in at a steady pace now. Come next Xmas I hope the momentum will have picked up for the PS4 owners.

Keep playing!

Not sure I missed it Ben but is there a review coming up for the Left Behind DLC for the Last of Us? If I did miss it my apologies.

This is great news, although I expected more.

4.2 million in 2 months. Then 1 million in one month. I expected 1.5 at least.

With amazing games like Infamous releasing very soon, and even more amazing games like The Order coming out on the horizon, things couldn't be better.

no major territories to release the xbox one?
you do realise it has not released in most of EU yet right?
come on is it really that hard to do a little research!?
always gotta take a cheap stab, dont ya?
oh well, cant blame a dog for barking.........

its going to be interesting to see how much the sales are in a month or so once both systems have their first big games.
allot of people are waiting till infamous, titanfall, and MGS release so that should increase the sales quite a bit.
