Kojima: It's Ridiculous To Compare MGS4 To Ground Zeroes

Typically, when you examine a new installment in an established franchise, you look at the previous entries to compare and contrast.

But you really can't do that in regards to the upcoming Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes. This is because comparing this new experience to Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is "nonsense."

That's what MGS creator Hideo Kojima said on his Twitter page. He says the comparison doesn't work because in fact, Ground Zeroes is an open-world game, while MGS4 certainly was not. Ground Zeroes is also going to be a good deal shorter, as it's only a prelude to the full game, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Well, that much was obvious.

However, I would like to point out that Kojima is also on record saying that MGSV isn't an open-world sandbox game in the strictest definition of the term. He's clarified that the label "open-world" has created some misunderstandings, due to the fact that MGSV won't be like Grand Theft Auto or Assassin's Creed. There's freedom, but it's not about free-roaming, per se.

Either way, though, it's probably true that you can't compare Ground Zeroes and MGS4.

Can someone explain to me why there is even a prelude game? Why not just put the whole thing together...

Let me guess...$$$

Jesus people either play it or don't. It's not like it's going to break the bank for anyone and if it does then skip it. Chances are those complaining were going to anyway.

That's a terrible mindset to have. Shouldn't anything and everything be allowed to be questioned? I don't care for the future of gaming to include $40 2hr preludes before I put down another $60 for the main game. Is this the new DLC of this generation of gaming?

No I think it's a fine way of thinking, just vote with your wallet. This didn't stop Gran Turismo 5 Prologue from selling and that was considered a "demo" by gamers. In this instance Kojima and co are giving us the prologue of MGS5, which has been stated numerous times will feature more game play than just two hours, and we can expect Phantom Pain later. I don't mind spending money on something I'm a fan of as long as it's not crappy and offers me a new experience and good ol' MGS style game play.

Fair enough, I suppose if the people want it then give it to them. And I must admit I trust Kojima. But I don't want this to become a trend. I can see it being abused just like DLC was last generation.

Maybe it is, but it is still Metal Gear, and that brings with it expectations of a central focus on narrative.

I don't know if this has been posted here before, but this is simply incredible. BTW, it's FFXV gameplay footage:

I'm pretty sure it has been but I'm glad you posted it again. It's entertaining to watch, not so sure about playing. I'm a fan of the Kingdom Hearts series but I'd never want its gameplay in a FF game. XV looks like far too much action and not enough RPG elements. ::sigh::

Does anything in that video even resemble an RPG?

Hard to say, as it doesn't really go into the RPG elements. You can see something of a party system in there, though, as well as a selection of weapons that one has to assume that you are free to equip at will.

I'm just thinking that "RPG" isn't defined by turn-based or anything like that. After all, Skyrim is an RPG, but you wouldn't necessarily know it from watching a 4-minute highlight reel like what has been compiled in that video. And I will say that if FFXV has as much depth as Lightning Returns, it will still be an RPG. And yes, there is actually quite a bit of depth in LR once you start to get further into it.

I don't see anything in the video that shows a level of depth of gameplay that could possibly satisfy me. It looked like a bunch of set-pieces connecting brief moments of action. Of course it all looked beautiful.

I've given up thinking RPG will ever be defined again by turn-based but that doesn't mean it has to be the opposite end of the spectrum. I played the Lightning Returns demo yesterday, I didn't even last 10minutes. If XV isn't vastly superior to what I saw in that game than I'm going to just tell SE to go F themselves.

I can't describe well enough the level of frustration and sadness I felt as I uninstalled the demo to Lightning Returns. Oh well, at least I have XIV.

But that's what I'm saying, LV. That trailer is a sizzle reel, designed to lure in those that are in love with the action side of RPGs. There is little chance of seeing the more "core" RPG elements in such a video. A trailer detailing customisation and the effects of it isn't going to appeal in the same way as enormous swords and bigger beasties is, which I would say is why that trailer is set up the way it is.

But if you really are as disappointed in LR as you profess to be (seriously, I say give it a rental because if the demo is the same one I played last year, it really doesn't do the full game justice in the precision and awareness that you often need to display), then odds are that XV isn't going to be for you either, as Toriyama went on record saying that LR effectively ripped combat elements from XV. I'd guess that that would stem from the mapping of attacks to the face buttons, as you can see in certain parts of that trailer options in the bottom corner of the screen. I wasn't watching it at full res, so I couldn't see for certain what they are, but it gives me a funny feeling that it is similar to LR. Even if that is the case, it doesn't seem to touch on Noctis' ability to stop projectile, or the way that he teleports hither and thither.

Anyway, to get back to the original point. There is no way in hell that a video like that I posted above could possibly do justice to the RPG elements of ANY game. You could mock up a four minute highlight reel of Skyrim, Mass Effect, Demon's Souls or Dragon's Dogma to similar effect, but you would still call all of them RPGs, wouldn't you? Just a really bad example of how to introduce an RPG, I think.

After the mess that SE has made of the FF franchise these past few years I would expect them to cater to their fanbase not the COD community. If you watch trailers of any of the previous FF games you get real idea of how things are going to play out. This trailer was just a bunch of flash. You have more faith than I do in SE :)

All of the games you've listed have established formats of gameplay that the consumer is already aware of. And Dragon's Dogma sticks to a basic formula that I at least was aware of after viewing a few trailers.

After nearly a decade of working on the game I'd expect a lot more. But we'll just have to agree to disagree right now and I hope SE proves me wrong. I really do, I want nothing more than to love another FF single player game.

thats exactly the problem though, its a successor to 4 and successors, replacements, are suppose to be BETTER in EVERY WAY!
thats the problem with everything these days, companies release replacements and they end up being WORSE than the products they replace.
so whats the point of releasing replacements?
$onys new flagship headphones the H3s for instance, a replacement for the XBA4s, and have 1 less driver in them and actually sound WORSE!
so WTFs the point of releasing a replacement model, with something that has less drivers, and sounds worse?
arent replacement products suppose to be improvements?
not like their cheaper either at 500 bucks once you import them!

Sounds to me like MGS5 might be something like the structure of Deux Ex:HR, and if so that's very promising. I think the balance between linearity and openness was close to perfect in that game.

Yeah an obvious fav here too. The universe, atmosphere, story, artwork, mechanics, the whole package was just fantastic.

I think I'd might even have put it on my top five that gen if it wasn't for those damn boss fights that totally threw me out of character each time.

MGS should not be in the same sentence as GTA or Assansins Creed >_>

I'm a die hard MGS fan and I don't want the series to be open world in that sense that you're just roaming around doing nothing.

If he doesn't want us comparing MGS GZ to MGS4 then maybe it should of been a different IP oh but that wouldn't of pleased the investors hes listening to

now to chime in on the square enix argument its interesting you mention Call of Duty because Square Enix Publishes Call of Duty in japan so yes that means they have their hands on it

as for FFXV until its complete i honestly don't care the wait is still going on and the way its going 2015 the earliest the fact that they haven't shown anything else in forever says they really don't care

Well with the game being multiplat the last generation versions will not look much better obviously and the next generation version will not be as good as it could be if it were exclusive to the PS4. Hopefully with the way sales are going it will go back to being exclusive.
