When Respawn Picked Xbox For Titanfall, It Was A "No-Brainer"

We know Titanfall isn't coming to the PlayStation platform.

Some rumors say "well, not yet" while others say the first game won't come to PS4, but the sequel will. Either way, developer Respawn Entertainment decided to give the nod to the Xbox brand. But why? What's the story behind it?

Well, according to NeoGAF user famousmortimer, the answer is pretty simple:

"Respawn wanted to focus on a single console as they were a small team. In 2011 and 2012 Microsoft was behind the scenes selling their vision for the Xbox One. At the same time Sony was gathering info but not really sharing it. The vast majority of the industry thought that Microsoft was going to dominate this gen… until one year ago, tomorrow.

Respawn picked the XB1 because it seemed like the better choice. MS was pushing it. Sony was mum. The 360 dominated the US and western EU, which is where FPS are king. It was a no-brainer."

Well, that makes perfect sense, doesn't it? Shooters tend to do better on the Xbox platform, the platform does much better in North America than anywhere else, and Americans love their shooters. So, why not bring what could be a big innovation in the genre to the biggest audience? The "biggest audience" would include both the PS4 and Xbox One, of course, but if you're only going to pick one console, well...

Seems logical.

Perhaps Respawn intended to make Xbone the lead platform, but to make it exclusive to that platform? I kinda doubt it. I remember Vince Zampella tweeting that Respawn wasn't aware of EA closing a deal with MS to make it console exclusive to their platform. For all talk surrounding this game MS better hope it delivers or it'll be another nightmare for them.

I remember reading that too. Considering the PS4 sales figures, I wonder if EA is regretting that decision.

The game is butter smooth, there's barely any negative talk about it. The game will sell.

It will sell, alright.

I predict a grand total of 200,000 units sold on Xbone, 1 million on 360, and 300,000 on PC.

Respawn was stupid letting EA have the power to make the bets on their horse.

It kind of frustrates me how much hype is around Titanfall.

Normally I dislike things that are hugely popular just because of that (stupid, I know). But with TF I literally don't find the game as appealing as other people seem to.

The worst change that Call of Duty ever made was to INCREASE the pace of the game, TF is the evolution of an insane game pace.

I dislike the idea of bots in competitive multiplayer. The graphics are not impressive. The gameplay is no different from other FPS games, I mean yeah there are Titans, but once you are inside a titan it is just the standard FPS gameplay.

I can't believe that most of the journalists in the world find this game to be AMAZING and is going to totally reinvent the FPS genre..... It's just another COD to me.

I think that is the reason for the hype, most people like COD, but most people are over getting the same thing every year. So with TF, it is COD, but it is still different.

Actually MS bought it up and funded it so that kinda matters too.

As far as the term "No-brainer" is concerned, I concur on numerous levels.

No Brains is right! Lol..

They didn't buy exclusivity. They bought a ban from TFs availability on the PS4. It was a tactic on MSs part and a gamble on RSs part. I'm totally against it. Mind you, I'm primarily not a FPS player so this doesn't bother me that much.

MS has started this gen off dirty. TF better make some Halo numbers. SnapTv isn't going to do it.

From what I have heard Respawn did not know about the deal with EA. Basically Microsoft threw a lot of money at EA and EA were the ones expecting the XBoner to dominate. LMAO I will just play it on the dust covered 360 or PC. Fun fact: The PS4 is selling faster than the PS1,PS2, and PS3. It took 10 months for the PS1 to sell 1.77 million units. It took PS2 13 months to sell 10.61 million. Thats for all territories. The PS3 on all territories sold 3.5 million units in 4 months. PS4 as of February 8th has sold 5.3 million units in under 3 months and you might as well add another 1-2 million when it launches in Japan 2 days from now. Point of story is EA are probably kicking themselves depending on how much money Microsoft threw at them. MS are intentionally delaying the 360 version just to try and boost the XBoner sales. I'm not bashing the Xbox one when I say Xboner I'm just saying they boned themselves. Oh yeah I almost forgot to mention that PS3 code was found in the Titanfall beta so that kind of proves that Respawn were not in the loop with what EA was negotiating. Always take NEOGAF insiders with a grain of salt, sometimes a whole shaker full of salt. Unless it's that Thuway guy. Pretty sure he either works for Sony or has really good connections in the industry. PS4TW

There's a reason that EA has been voted as the number 1 worst company in America time after time.

I guess this will really help spur them on to that #1 slot again this year too.

Yeah when the exclusivity was first announced, Zampella posted on twitter basically saying he didn't know about the exclusive deal until that day.

NeoGAF insiders do have some level of credibility however. To be labeled as an 'insider' on that site, you need to provide evidence to one of the mods to prove your status. Otherwise you will be permanently banned.

That makes no sense. None at all actually. If they chose MS to get the sales, why not go with both to get MORE sales. Business 101. Anyways I don't care. I hope it does well so there is a sequel, however, from what I've seen and heard I'm not envious that I can't play it on PS4.

Oh, and MS gave em' a bunch of money too.

my buddy was in the beta and he's usually overly excited about games he enjoys explaining every detail. With the beta he was generally quiet just saying it was good. Take that as you will but for me it says he wasn't overly impressed.

I got the same feeling. Tried it for a few minutes and while I can say it has its moments TitanFall is not mindblowing. The MS hype machine is what created this faux sensation that TF is the next big thing. Maybe it is but the players will ultimately decide. Not one of the 7 people I know that only play FPS/COD and played TF seem genuinely excited. But they are hungry for something to feed their XBoxOnes. Lol..

It makes sense to me. For a new, small team and new IP, I can see why they would want to play it safe first. To be able to sell for both consoles, means more investment as well (marketing, distribution, etc.), thus potentially more risk. With the thought that Xbone was going to be dominate in the fps regions (UK/NA), Sony being hum, PLUS with the extra cash M$ probably offered them, the safest, probably no fail console would be the Xbone.

Of course, this is before all the whole 5M vs 3M stuff.

There's a reason why a lot of titles debut exclusively. It can range from risks, corporate not allowing it, or simply not worth the investment. And also, it doesn't hurt to have a bit of extra $$$ of course.

If it was that simple, every developer would release their new IPs for every console possible, which is not the case.

Actually it is that simple. When you release a new product you want it to release the widest audience. You don't want to consolidate a new product. It doesn't mean it will fail if you do, it means your not trying to reach its potential. Not only that but in terms of numbers the PS3 was neck and neck with the 360 when this was announced, and FPS' are a top seller on Sony's machine also. As a publisher if EA wasn't handed money by MS to secure rights, this would have been Multiplats because EA knows they need to reach a wider audience. Hopefully what MS paid will compensate for any loss. If not this is terrible business.

This is simple stuff here, you don't have to agree, but generally speaking this is how business works.

Let's be honest here, most titles debut exclusively because they are either first party or a hardware company has secured rights through monetary means.

Considering that Titanfall is coming to the PC and that the PS4 shares a similar architecture, I can't imagine it taking a whole lot of time and effort for the talented folks at Respawn to bring Titanfall to the PS4 as well. Seeing how well the PS4 is selling, it could have been well worth their effort.

I hope MS payed EA and Respawn well to lose out on all those potential PS4 software sales.

I'm done with mediocre shooters. They're so overdone, and the market is flooded with 'em. I admit that I bought KZ:SF, but I did so because it was one of the few games available on launch. It wasn't impressive. (KZ hasn't been impressive since KZ2.)

Xbox can have its over-saturated influx of shooters. It makes sense that for the consoles, it got the nod; that's where the shooter lovers go. And I hope they enjoy it as much as COD and BF: Then the Xbox can have all that ongoing mediocrity, and hopefully PlayStation can again dominate in the games of substance category.

I disagree - sales figures clearly show shooters are the most popular genre on the Playstation as well. Just look at the best selling games on the PS4 so far.

Xbox live is full of extremely annoying kids and teenagers which is why a lot of adults get Playstation for their shooters.

Sony is clearly going after FPS/FPS fans this generation - just look at the redesigned controller with those beautiful triggers. Xbox has Halo, Gears and now Titanfall - we have KZ and The Order. Destiny is going to be huge and Sony has payed for exclusive content.

M$ did well to get Titanfall - it is very very good - on the PC beta at least.

I was just for fun looking into the best selling PS4 games, then looked up exclusives.

As a side not, I was shocked to see Valkyria Chronicles was as high up as 13th.

EDIT: nvm, the article is misleading. Seems to be a list of the best selling, then ranked according to the author's favorites. I have no idea what the best selling exclusives are.

I hate the fact that people are shoving those triggers down our throats.

It WILL NEVER be better to use a pressure sensitive button over a standard button when it comes to FPS.

I can't even tell you the number of times I have died in BF4 because pressing R2 to shoot didn't work, or when I accidentally fired a rocket into my own face by accidentally knocking it. I get it, but at least let us choose which button layout to use.

I have been playing the Titanfall beta on the PC and its okay. Nothing really amazing in my opinion. I can see how a lot of people are going to flock to it and call it the second coming but honestly it isn't anything that special.

It has the same crappy gunplay that CoD MW2 had, with very similar balance issues. The titans are fun to play in but it seems gimmicky to be honest. They are supposed to be like kill streaks but I dunno I wasn't too impressed.

Its fun and a decent shooter with good graphics and movement systems. But at the end of the day it is hecka casual feeling.

Ill stick with Counterstrike, a game that actually requires me to aim.

Hit the nail on the head. Titans feel like unearned perks. You can make them drop faster with more kills but otherwise everyone can get a Titan. Casualfest it is. Then again that is what they aimed for. Easy accessibility. But if you want the casual market then why limit yourself to one platform? Oh yeah.. A dollar and a dream.

The ideas in Titanfall are really cool. If they took the same cool ideas tweaked them, made the game more about skill shots, fixed the gunplay and in general made it more hardcore...well THEN we would have a game that I would be super excited for.

Like I said its not a bad game, its just extremely casual feeling. Its another game that requires little input and makes you feel like more of a bad ass than you actually are.

The titans are just bigger versions of normal players though. All they do is soak up more damage, but they are a much bigger target and will ALWAYS get focused.

You haven't seen this much in the beta but I guarantee once the game comes out Titans will be underpowered. They don't last long in fights now, and since they can't jump, a foot soldier can easily hide in a building and take pot shots at one.
