Fact Or Fiction: Sony Teases Shenmue 3 In This PS4 Video

Yeah, yeah. We know. This sequel has been "teased" for a whole lot of years now.

We put "teased" in quotations because most times, what we thought was a tease turned out to be absolutely nothing. This could be another one of those times...but you never know.

Here's a new Japanese PlayStation 4 Experience video, which is very relevant because Sony's next-gen console will soon launch in the Land of the Rising Sun. On the surface, it doesn't appear to hide anything special. But look closely at the 16-second and 25-second marks; you will see the user name "Ryo H" on the screen. Those who know Shenmue are quite familiar with that name, of course.

That could just be an homage to the classic franchise, or maybe it simply doesn't mean anything at all. Then again, we've been hearing rumblings about the resurrection of this beloved IP, so perhaps Sony really is teasing a long-awaited Shenmue sequel. What do you think?

If I'm a die-hard Shenmue fan, that would be crazy-making. LOL What's interesting is that is that OPM UK hinted at a "series of massive ignificance" being confirmed for the PS4. See here: http://i.imgur.com/Yt9de5n.jpg

Could it be Shenmue? The return of Crash Bandicoot to Sony? I could only imagine!

Interesting tidbit: SEGA lost the Shenmue trademark in the US, this month.

This shows how careless SEGA has been with this franchise. And why Sony would need to step in and foot the bill for a new Shenmue game getting off the ground.

Maybe this video was a clue.

Nah, just the user name which could either be a real dude or a gamer's homage to the great game. I really wish Shen 3 would be real though.

I've got half a mind to play some Shenmue this weekend now since I'm on another wild DC kick.

Fact: World is buried under a very powerful snow storm that refuses to stop. It's the day after tomorrow here folks. I may be condemned to gaming all weekend.

It must've snowed a foot and a half over the last week. I'm sick of it.

I drove home from work in a rain storm and I live in Canada. Saw two cars do 180s on the highway and almost hit the guard rail after hydroplaning in a massive puddle....The weather man is a sinister creature isn't he.

Out here in Philly we're already over 50" for the year. Not much compared to some places, but considering we got 8" all last winter, it's kinda ridiculous, especially since Philly isn't equipped to handle any snow at all. My son has had four school days cancelled due to snow already this year, because anything more than two inches is an automatic snow day =\

Then you'll be looking forward to the day the snow turns to rain? ;-)

A foot and a half? What about almost three feet?

Yeah. We've been slammed with snow in the Tristate area this year, especially here in Jersey.

@Bio,

How could Philly, an East Coast city, not be prepared for snow? It is an East Coast city for Pete's sake. It isn't like Pennsylvania is Georgia.

A brutal winter all over. Frigging Atlanta got slammed with an ice and snow storm! We got a good 8-12 inches around DC the other day, nearly unheard of in these parts. Your federal government, you'll be happy to know, completely shut down :)

I would love it if Shenmue 3 came to the PS4 but if that's a tease it's one of the weakest teases of all time.

Shenmue 3 needs to happen, they should just kickstart it, I KNOW it would get enough support.

The first Shenmue had development costs over 47 million dollars, which is 65 million dollars today when accounting for inflation. At the time it was the most expensive game ever made. Given that the reason the series was discontinued was poor sales (it was a huge money pit for Sega), I really doubt it would come close to raising the money needed for a next-gen sequel.

Don't get me wrong I'd love to see the series continue, and if they did do a Kickstarter I'd throw down $60 just on the tiniest hope, but I don't think it's likely :(

I wonder if they could make it on less of a budget now though? I think Shenmue might have been one of those cases where technology was developing and they spent more than they needed to get the results they wanted.

I agree it is a long shot, I just think at the very least they should find a way to finish the arc they left hanging after shenmue 2 >.<;

I'm pretty sure in a country of 127 million people, Ryo is at least a somewhat common name. Also, since Suzuki planned Shenmue as a 16 part series, eventually getting Shenmue 3 would just be an even bigger tease, now that most of us have gotten used to the idea that we're not getting anymore sequels.

But man, Shenmu 2 was sooooo good.

I love Japanese marketing - it's actually informative and talks about the product.

American marketing just shows people out smiling, laughing, and doing stuff totally unrelated to any product. Whether its a commercial for the PS4 or tampons, they will show a person smiling and having fun while playing tennis. I just don't get it.

Completely incidental. I wouldn't rule out the possibility entirely, but that's some shaky foundation.

I won't believe it until I see a confirmation from Sega. But if Shenmue III is released I doubt it will be a PS4 exclusive as the original Xbox got a re-release of Shenmue II. It also isn't a positive note from Sega that Yakuza 5 has remained a Japanese exclusive. It has gotten to the point now where I just believe that the bad ending to Shenmue II is the real ending and the adventure was cut short a shame... but at least it has the bad ending to give some sort of conclusion.

It's funny to see a Japanese commercial with Killzone in it, nobody cares about that game there.

bit coincidental this releasing the same day the reports that the licence for it has been lost due to inactivity.
probably is coincidental though.
funny, this reminds me of a tweet ubisoft released yesterday saying its time to update that definition, with a picture of vas pointing to a ski jumper at the winter olympics.
and everyone jumped thinking it was a tease for far cry 4, but nope.
guess ubisoft was a little bored and wanted to troll people..... bastards!

They should just use the original engine and stuff and make Shen III as a retro title.

And we need HD updates on PS4 of the last 2.

I was actually thinking this as well. Use the same engine, but make it HD. It could do really well that way. Also they wouldn't have to spend a fortune.

I want the same voice actors...half the charm was ryos god awful voice actor, bless his soul.

This is what I have been saying all along, I would certainly welcome a Shenmue III built within the original engine - In fact I would prefer it, the transition of two generations would certainly be jarring.

Yeah I do enjoy the terrible voices, there's a cool version of Shenmue II on the internet for Dreamcast where a fan ripped the English voices off the Xbox version and put them in.
