PlayStation 4 Officially Debuts In Japan

The PlayStation 4's global lead is about to get significantly larger.

Sony's next-generation console has officially debuted in Japan, the 49th region of the world to receive the new system. It seems really strange that it came to Sony's home country so late but hey, it's out now.

The PS4 goes for 41,979 yen (about $410) and early reports are that consumers are flocking to stores to nab their unit. As of February 8, Sony announced that 5.3 million PS4 consoles had been sold around the world, and you can expect that number to rise quite a bit over the next few weeks. The PlayStation brand has always been very popular in Japan, especially when compared to the direct competition. Microsoft has tried to push Xbox but it just never seems to work out.

Midnight launches were going on all over the place, so the excitement level is at a fever pitch right now. Can't wait to see how the PS4 performs!

Cool! I wonder if Japanese people are mad it took so long. Oh well I'd be willing to bet its worth the wait!

Naw, I don't think they were mad. Pretty sure that they knew that Sony wanted to make sure to release the PS4 with games worth buying the console for.

It was a good tactic, because without games, the PS4 could've run the risk of fizzling out.

That won't happen now that everything was taken care of. The PS4 is ready for showtime.

I happen to have a friend that lives in Japan, and all I've been hearing from him over the past few months is "they left their homeland in the dark" and "why does America get a Japanese product first?"

So, I think it is safe to assume that a decent number of gamers in Japan are very hurt by Sony's sudden lack of homeland loyalty.. But I doubt it will affect the PS4 at all sale wise, and most people, my friend included, will forget about the whole thing once they get their hands on the PS4 itself.

Even if they released it in November Japanese gamers should have waited another three months for a great game that is Ryu Ga Gotoku Ishin(Yakuza Ishin)

It's a business decision because of the fact that NA and EU, being the biggest market for consoles, has to be put in priority. Even with the priority, we still have shortage problems. Imagine if it was a worldwide release within a month. The shortages would be even much more worst. By having Japan release late in February, production can be focused for the biggest market, whilst easily filling in the much smaller markets as well.

Smart move by Sony, but I can understand if Japanese gamers were concerned. I hope they can understand it was an important business decision.

Another million will happen easy now, I'm really happy for the Japanese people. I'm hoping now there will be some revitalized interest in top quality Japanese games that aren't just portable.

They probably didn't release there due to a known lack of interest in western games. They don't care about FPS, smart people.

Japanese people actually do enjoy fps games. They are big on them. Many were actually excited for titanfall.

Not if you look at the sales.

I totally agree World. The fact that the PS4 looks to be taking Japan by storm has me excited about the potentially big games we could get out of an extremely popular PS4 over there.

As for why its releasing so late over there, I thought it was well known that Sony held it back until bigger Japanese made titles were ready. It launched with the new Yakuza and Dynasty Warriors game, as well as the FF XIV beta, among other titles.

PC shooters, not console games. Again, they are excited for titanfall even though it isn't coming out on their preferred system.

I hope they have enough ps4's in Japan for the people that want them, I'm starting to worry that when Infamous comes out and I'm ready to buy a ps4 there won't be a ps4 to be had.

FINALLY releases in its own town!
hopefully will start to see allot more announcements now the systems out there.

speaking of the launch party though, i find it extremely pathetic how one sided the media is today.
at the xbox one announcement party there was literally 1000 stories of "journalists" bagging M$ for using pre recorded applause.
you literally could not go onto the internet for weeks without it being stuffed down your throat!
now the JP ps4 launch comes, and apparently $ony did the same.
so you theres literally 1000 stories about it, right?
its going to be left right and center for the next few weeks right?
nope, ive seen ONE story about it!
ONE!
nah, "journalists" are not biased, not at all.........
