Sony On PS4 Topping PS2 Sales Tally: It's Not Impossible
The PlayStation 2 is the best-selling video game console of all time, moving over 150 million units in its lifetime.
Given the current state of the industry and how competition is shaping up, it doesn't seem feasible that a system will top that number. None of the consoles from the previous generation really even came close, but might the PS4 approach that lofty number...?
It's off to a very good start but Sony isn't making any predictions just yet. Speaking to Inside Games (as translated by DualShockers), Sony Computer Entertainment Japan and Asia president Hiroshi Kawano doesn't want to say it's "impossible."
"As we all know, unfortunately the sales of the PS3 didnít even get near the sales of the PS2. It may be difficult for a home console now, but I think we shouldnít say itís impossible unconditionally. However, I believe itís possible to expand the popularity of the PS4 by providing a rich gaming experience and making use of the fusion of network service and high performance that is possible only on home consoles."
Kawano added that Sony will continue to increase their marketing efforts for the PS4, and he also reminded us of the Remote Play feature. It makes the portable Vita a nice companion unit for the PS4 but many consumers still balk at the Vita's relatively high price and lack of AAA exclusive software. As for the PS4 ever matching the PS2 in terms of worldwide sales, Kawano finished:
"When we talk on whether itíll match the sales of the PS2 numerically, weíll have to do our best in the future."
It probably won't happen, but you never know. I'd just like to see the PlayStation brand get back on top (and stay there) for the new generation.
