Sony On PS4 Topping PS2 Sales Tally: It's Not Impossible

The PlayStation 2 is the best-selling video game console of all time, moving over 150 million units in its lifetime.

Given the current state of the industry and how competition is shaping up, it doesn't seem feasible that a system will top that number. None of the consoles from the previous generation really even came close, but might the PS4 approach that lofty number...?

It's off to a very good start but Sony isn't making any predictions just yet. Speaking to Inside Games (as translated by DualShockers), Sony Computer Entertainment Japan and Asia president Hiroshi Kawano doesn't want to say it's "impossible."

"As we all know, unfortunately the sales of the PS3 didnít even get near the sales of the PS2. It may be difficult for a home console now, but I think we shouldnít say itís impossible unconditionally. However, I believe itís possible to expand the popularity of the PS4 by providing a rich gaming experience and making use of the fusion of network service and high performance that is possible only on home consoles."

Kawano added that Sony will continue to increase their marketing efforts for the PS4, and he also reminded us of the Remote Play feature. It makes the portable Vita a nice companion unit for the PS4 but many consumers still balk at the Vita's relatively high price and lack of AAA exclusive software. As for the PS4 ever matching the PS2 in terms of worldwide sales, Kawano finished:

"When we talk on whether itíll match the sales of the PS2 numerically, weíll have to do our best in the future."

It probably won't happen, but you never know. I'd just like to see the PlayStation brand get back on top (and stay there) for the new generation.

Well indeed its not impossible. Its going to be difficult to get there considering how the market has changed since the time the PS2 came out. But still, not impossible. In fact, its very possible that the PS4 could come close to the PS2's success.

The Xbox One is failing to catch on. And it will never hit it big in Japan. While its high price will limit its appeal to first world countries. Since there is no way it will sell in many Asian countries or Latin America. So the PS4 has a clear advantage over the X1 (aside from the technical ones).

Once the PS4 takes a clear lead, developers will put all their weight behind it. Leaving the Xbone the tablescraps (or even a watered-down Wii U adaptation of a particular game!).

So any hardcore gamer out there will only really have one option for a home console. And it won't be the Xbox One either. Its gonna be the PS4.

The PS4 will establish the PlayStation brand as the leading brand in the gaming world once again. So in a way, it will be as big as the PS2.

While it would kinda be impressive to see PS2-level sales for the PS4 down the road, I don't see it as being that important. Do what you need to stay on top Sony. What I really want is developers to do "Hey, we got a really niche title, we should aim for the PS4 because it has the largest base".

This generation recently is the generation I hated the most. Nothing was worse for a JRPG fan that saw wonderful titles that were released first on other platforms (Star Ocean 4, Tales of Graces, etc) or exclusively for certain consoles (Tales of Vesperia, Infinite Undiscovery, Last Story, etc). Never do I want to see it split like that again.

Let's go back to PS1 and PS2 where, like Sony says, "Playstation: The Best Place to Play".

I agree... in 2012 I resorted to buying a Wii for my JRPG fix. If you asked me prior to 2012 about getting a Wii I would have thought you were joking but with the Operation Rainfall titles (Xenoblade, The Last Story & Pandora's Tower) it was the best decision that year for gaming as the PS3 had an awful year, luckily 2013 was chock-full of titles I just hope 2014 isn't a repeat - I can't think of anything I want after FFX/X-2 HD and MGS5:GZ this March.

Remember the PS2 was not available for online preorder. So PS2 and ps4 sales comparisons are apples to oranges

PS3 had trouble because 360 inexplicably took up the market and everyones money by selling 5 consoles per person.

PS4 could reach the lofty goal if Xbox One continues to tank all over the world because PS2 dominated for having very little in the way of real competition. Plus there are more gamers in the world now than there was back then.

Ha......MS snake oil salesmen can always speak through both side of their mouth at once, just by utilizing MS's patented double-jointed forked tongue extenders & Pinocchio nostril length crimpers.

I think its beyond possible.

Some RPGs would certainly bring everyone back, and if Sony somehow managed to nab Final Fantasy again everything would be balanced in the universe. SE clearly wants to go back to the way things were, but lack the backbone to do it. It'll be interesting to see things play out this generation.

Not to be a Negative Nancy but this is pointless. It's like the rookie dropping 50 in his first game and someone says "Can he pass Wilt Chamberlain?"

This shouldn't even be a topic of discussion for another 6 years.

I think it's pretty safe to say that the PS4 is back on top, if not dominating the way the PS2 did. There's already a gap of about a million and a half between the PS4 and the XBO and the former is just barely short of the sales numbers of the Wii U. Whether it will match up the PS2's sales numbers is a different question. To do that, Sony need to make sure that people know that the PS4 is the product to have with advertising, while appealing to their audience with a broad array of good-to-great games, though it's difficult to imagine them failing on that latter point, just considering what is already available and the back catalogues of their exclusive studios.

ps3 sales didn't match because 360 had half the market.

mmm I don't know about that being the reason. PS3 had a ton of early adopters. It had momentum from PS2 still, clearly. But it had such a bad start in regards to support, software, cost, just.... everything.

If, like most people, you were going to wait a few months or a year or so (history showed waiting a year is worthwhile in all previous gens), it didn't take long to realize it's a risky investment.
