Source: Sony Sells Over 320,000 PS4 Units In Two Days

The PlayStation 4 has launched in Japan, and everyone is wondering if the machine is flying off store shelves.

You can decide for yourself: According to a recent Famitsu report (as translated by Siliconera), Sony sold 322,083 systems during the opening weekend in Japan.

Notably, this outstrips the Wii U (which sold 308,570 units during its launch weekend), and it easily trumps the PlayStation 3, which only managed to sell 88,443 in that same time period. As for how this launch compared to the PS2...well, the PS2 is just unbeatable in so many ways; that sucker sold a whopping 630,552 units in its first two days on the Japanese market back in 2000. Sony says it's not impossible for the PS4 to match the PS2's amazing performance but man, it seems unlikely.

The industry has changed so much and the situation is so different. Don't forget that the PS2 had no Xbox with which to contend when it launched; Microsoft's console didn't launch until a year later. ...and when it did, nobody cared in Japan, anyway.

Long road to hoe, but it's a good start.

Impressive. Now if those numbers persist for a month Sony would be riding a surfers wave all the way to the beach. Again though... bring on the games because Sony has the audience and their attention.

Keep playing!

This is just the beginning. Japan has continued to learn towards mobile devices so I was never expecting the PS4 to come close to the PS2. But it's a great sign to see it destroy the PS3s numbers.

Didn't Ps2 sold double that in that time?

I think the real eye opener here is that the PS Vita actually sold more than the PS4. But barely.

In just two days, the Vita sold 324,859 units.

It's a portable system and we all know Japan has been more inclined towards handhelds and mobiles for the past few years. It's not really that surprising. But when you compare it to other home consoles launches, then you'll be surprised.

Yeah, you're right. Japan is mostly a handheld market.

The PS4 launch was only eclipsed by the PS2 and marginally by the Wii (about 50,000 units). Putting into consideration how much those two went on to sell, the state of home consoles in Japan, and how the PS4 launched on a non-holiday with a rather weak software lineup, I'd say it's amazing it sold that much!

And if you want another point of comparison, the PS3 sold 88,443 units within two days of its launch. Now that's quite a turnaround. I'd bet Sony's very pleased about these numbers.

The Wii was in limited supply at the time, though. Nintendo barely had around 400k units for the system's launch in Japan. It sold 371k units in two days. After that, it was in short supply. Since Nintendo was trying to deal with shortages in the Western world.

In regards to the PS3, Sony only had 100k units available at launch. So it selling 88k in 2 days was quite respectable.

I think that its hard to tell how the PS4 will perform based on how other systems fared. What is going to be a huge factor in the PS4 catching on in Japan, are the games.

I think the big difference between the two, in sales, is the price point. $400 vs $500-600 is going to mean better sales out of the gate.

Impressive either way, though.

Seems quite possible now that the PS4 will have sold 6 million by the end of this month. Anyone willing to agree that they're looking likely to outstrip their fiscal predictions by a clear 2 million when April rolls around?

Frankly, I find the popularity of the PS4 at this point astounding.

Also, Ben will probably get to this at the next site update, but Persona 5 has been confirmed for a Western release in 2015, exclusively for the PS3. KEEEEEN!

Off topic but are you going to be doing a review for both Thief and Castlevania? I'm kinda scared to open my preordered copies with the reviews I'm seeing. I don't want Colonial Marines to happen again but I trust your judgement Ben.

You could just do the old fashioned thing of playing the games and making your own judgement on them. You've already spent the money.

I don't take games out of the shrink wrap until I know better. Colonial Marines ruined that for me.

Colonial Marines was one game. I understand where you're coming from, I just think those two games will fare better than the mess that Gearbox had made, they have a better track record anyway.

I've got Thief downloading now, but have no interest in Lords of Shadow 2. I got so bored by the first one after about five hours, uggggh.

Japan is not the console market it used to be. This is really impressive for a console in an overall shrinking market that is obsessed with handhelds.

I would expect a big surge of PS4 buying just before April hits. That's when taxes go up in Japan and people seem to be planning to make larger purchases happen before then. We shall see.

So the PS3 sold 1/6 the amount that the PS2 sold in the same time?

Wow. The PS3 really was hard to sell huh.

Well I must admit the PS2 totally killed it, but the PS4 will eclipse the record the PS2 did just of course not in the 2 days time span of course. But PS4 will undoubtedly out do the system before or by E3.
